Palm Sunday
St. Pius V Catholic Church, Pasadena, Tx
March 29, 2015
Brothers and sisters,
As a child, I would look forward to Palm Sunday. Not only did we carry home exotic foliage unlike anything we ever saw in Ne w
York, but these were blessed palms, a sign of holiness. At home, they would be fashioned into crosses or placed behind pictures of the
Saints and they would remain visible signs to us of the presence of God throughout the year.
There was a sense of anticipation on those Palm Sundays, heightened by the changes in the Sunday Liturgy. All of the mystery of Holy
Week lay before us and Easter was around the corner. No doubt we also appreciated that in those days our school closed for the week
before Easter.
I am sure our children still experience that anticipation. May we, who are adults, share in it on an even deeper level.
We recount today, the whole of the Passion of Christ from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem until his death on the cross. In the week to
come we will enter ever more deeply into the mystery of our redemption. On Tuesday, the local Church of Galveston-Houston will
gather with her Bishop in his cathedral church to celebrate the Chrism Mass. This mass, at which the Holy Oils to be used in the Rite of
Christian Initiation at the Vigil Mass of Easter are blessed, is sign of our unity. On Thursday, we come together as the Body of Christ to
receive his Body and Blood at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper which concludes with our Adoration of the Lord. On Friday, we gather
solemnly to recall his death, a death in which we share through Baptism, and venerate the Cross on which he died. For yet another day,
Saturday, our tabernacles will stand empty as a sign of our mourning until the evening comes and we ignite the new fire at the beginning
of the first Mass of Easter. The light of Christ spreads joy throughout the Church and again we hear the Aleluya!
This Palm Sunday is indeed a day of anticipation, for the mystery of our redemption lies before us.
God bless you and keep you.
Fr. Joe
Hermanos y hermanas,
iglesia y otra vez vamos a oír ¡Aleluya!
Padre Joe

Gospel at the Procession with Palms Mark 11:1-10, 1When Jesus and his disciples drew near to
Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of
Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go
into the village opposite you, and immediately on entering it,
you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat.
Untie it and bring it here. If anyone should say to you, 'Why
are you doing this?' reply, 'The Master has need of it and will
send it back here at once.'"
So they went off and found a colt tethered at a gate
outside on the street, and they untied it. Some of the
bystanders said to them, "What are you doing, untying the
colt?" They answered them just as Jesus had told them to,
and they permitted them to do it. So they brought the colt to
Jesus and put their cloaks over it. And he sat on it. Many
people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread
leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. Those
preceding him as well as those following kept crying out:
“Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the
Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to
come! Hosanna in the highest!"
First Reading Isaiah 50:4-7
The Lord GOD has given me a well-trained tongue,
that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will
rouse them. Morning after morning he opens my ear that I
may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back. I
gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who
plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and
spitting. The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not
disgraced; I have set my face like flint knowing that I shall
not be put to shame.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 22 (OC#846) R. My God, my
God, why have you abandoned me?

No aparté
¿por qué me has abandonado?
Second Reading Philippians 2:6-11
Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did
not regard equality with God something to be grasped.
Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave,
coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance,
he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of
death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly
exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above
every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should
bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the
glory of God the Father.
Segunda Lectura Filipenses 2, 6-11
