A Nivel Principiantes. MODELO VIAJES / TURISMO CIENCIAS / NATURALEZA ! On some Cards, this box provides introductory information. In addition, visit www.miraflores.org for further supporting materials. A Beginner level. DEPORTES VIDA DIARIA / FESTIVALES ARTES HISTORIA / GEOGRAFÍA INTERNET SEARCH KEY WORDS Provides students key words to research the topic USING THE INTERNET SEARCH ENGINE OF THEIR CHOICE. Why search in Spanish? To learn vocabulary, read, scan and become active participants in the culture. Why search in English? For student comfort and skill level. FORMAT The large variety of formats keeps interest high and encourages creativity: reports, letters, maps, weblogs, film scripts, interviews, photo albums, brochures, speeches, police reports, museum displays, charts, stories and more. Teachers can alter or switch formats to serve class needs. Beginners list, chart, map and write short sentences. The search is specifically directed. The tasks mirror the vocabulary and grammar available to beginners. This is great practice in communication skills. Beginners are very resourceful in getting across a message using their limited language skills. B Intermediate level. Intermediate students can stretch to learn new vocabulary or they can work on writing at a level that is comfortable to both increase fluency and integrate cultural information. C Advanced level. Foster thinking skills. Advanced students write longer texts about more complex ideas. Their research takes them to new, exciting places. Advanced students can also make use of the tasks for the other levels to create a rich and varied writing portfolio that seamlessly ties together language and culture. In my country: The fourth assignment relates the topic directly to the student’s own reality. It provides an opportunity for additional practice, extension and language recycling following one of the other tasks, MODEL or a stand-alone assignment. OF TEACHER´S GUIDE AFTER SPANISH VERSION.) Escríbanos a [email protected]. Teachers should not accept ANY assignment that does not include the web addresses used. 4) Use a Spanish language search engine. This will expose your students to new search engines and research possibilities, as well as content in Spanish. Here are a few ideas: g (VERSIÓN EN ESPAÑOL PÁGINAS ANTERIORES) One of the greatest dangers is that students will copy and paste what they have found on the Web. A simple way to avoid this problem is to request that all work handed in include ALL web addresses used. Even pictures should include the web address. A NOTE ON WEB ADDRESSES In some cases we also provide the teacher with the addresses for websites where we have found relevant information or images. This is only to help jumpstart the research, when needed. This does NOT imply that we endorse the website or its content. It also does NOT indicate that we have read every part of the website, nor verified its content. You must decide for yourself if a particular site has accurate and appropriate content and if you want to provide your students with the web addresses included in the Teacher’s guide. CHALLENGES? WEB SEARCHES IN SPANISH Typically, any search engine will return results in Spanish if the search terms are in Spanish. However, if the search term is a proper noun or another phrase that is common in both English and Spanish, the search results may be predominantly in English, if searching from the US or Canada. A few tricks to get more results in Spanish: 1) Add a Spanish word to your search terms. Thus, instead of just writing the key word Madrid, write Madrid + ciudad. 2) Specify the language of the search. You can often do this using the “advanced search” function or something similar. 3) The Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes is a wonderful resource that includes both institutional and thematic sites. http://www.cervantesvirtual.com/ Útil A – página 35 ÚTIL A: TRAVEL / TOURISM - TEACHER’S GUIDE – CARDS A1 – A2 The Research** México DF http://www.mexicocity.gob.mx/ (in Spanish or in English) http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide191501859-mexico_city_vacations-i (in English) or go to: travel.yahoo.com and search for Mexico City. It may be helpful to provide time limits for the various pieces of this activity, for example 10 minutes to explore, 10 minutes to choose places and write at least one thing about each place, 20 minutes away from the computer to begin writing, 15 minutes to go back to the Internet to find missing information. w ww ww w. .m m ir aff lloo rre ess .o. orgr Bilbao http://www.bilbao.net (in English, Spanish or Euskara) Check the tourism section. http://www.virtourist.com/europe/bilbao/in dex.html photo tour in English Shanghai, China Osaka, Japan g CARD A1 México DF, Bilbao, Iquitos Community / Neighborhood Iquitos To increase the likelihood of getting Spanish search results, add the search term “turismo”. http://www.siturismo.org.pe/ In Spanish, a site from Iquitos. http://www.iquitos.info/gallery.htm in English. http://www.go2peru.com/iquitos_travel_guid e.htm in English. They also have a Spanish site, but how to get there from the English site is not obvious. Try searching in Spanish. Language Superlatives help make the descriptions exciting. Descriptions can be in the present, stories in the past, plans for the tourist in the future or the conditional. Teacher tips Travel brochures often include photos of important buildings or parks, a small map of the city or a central area, and some text to entice the potential tourist. for example, a short history of the city, what the city is famous for, some basic facts like climate, airports, currency. There may be advertisements from hotels or restaurants. Beginners can use more images with short captions, and bullet points to give information. More advanced students can write paragraphs. Students can work singly or in groups. One site to start with: http://www.spain.info/ in English or Spanish. Language Style- Do you want factual or enticing? Formal or informal? Who is your audience? Classroom notes The students might enjoy discussing a trip like this as a class, before beginning their research. Could students talk to someone who has travelled to Spain? Connect to other cultures What do you (student) like to do on vacation? What do young people at your destination like to do? How does that affect your plans?
