Beyond Death - Church of Saint Mark
32nd Sunday of Ordinary Time November 10, 2013 Join Us for Mass: Mon-Fri 10 am | Sat 8 am & 5 pm | website: www.saintmark-mn.org 2001 Dayton Ave - Saint Paul, MN 55104 Fr. Humberto Palomino, P.E.S. Pastor of the Church of St. Mark Sunday 9:00 & 11 am | email: [email protected] | 651-645-5717 A Strong Family United in Christ | Beyond Death A Strong Family Story… Thank you to everyone who The connection between all the readings for today, especially between participated in the Renewal of Vows the first reading and the Gospel, is the Resurrection. In this case the Mass and Celebration on Oct 27th. focus is not the Resurrection of Jesus, which of course is present in all teachings, but it is our own resurrection. It was heartwarming and faithaffirming to see almost 60 couples The first reading takes place within a context of persecution. At the time, Jews were from our St. Mark’s Church and brought to the extremes of humiliation, with the sole purpose and intention of making School family recommit themselves to them reject their laws and their faith. The persecutor, a cruel tyrant and bloodthirsty God and spouse in the renewal of man, couldn’t achieve this goal when the time came to face a group of youth who were their marriage sacrament. very firm in their principals. It is then when these young Israelites, forced by the circumstances, reclaimed the sovereignty of God. In the end, when the torturer Our thanks to the planning committee accomplished all his plans by taking the lives of the innocent youth, we are left with and everyone who contributed to making this event such a wonderful only one possible answer for believers: There is something after this life. reflection of unity in the Lord as a Through the example of the youth from the first reading, we are invited to explore a family. different explanation of the resurrection from the dead other than philosophical reasoning or the Bible. It is possible that a theoretical argument may help in a theoretical affirmation or proposal. But in order to bet your very life for a cause, we need a stronger conviction, and that is precisely what those young people are showing us with their testimony. Why couldn't the Sadducees believe in the resurrection? Among the many Jewish groups in Jesus' time, the most unbelieving (if we can use that term correctly) were the Sadducees, the priestly caste. They were considered heirs of Sadoq, a high -- Spiritually Speaking continued on page 2 Upcoming Events TODAY! Welcome Reception for Fr. Eduardo at Coffee & Donuts TODAY! The Catholic understanding of Holy Communion as the very Body and Blood of Jesus Christ limits the reception of the Holy Eucharist to those who share our faith and are united in discipleship within the life of the Church. Our brothers and sisters of other faiths are invited to come forward to receive a blessing at this time. Please indicate the desire to do so by crossing arms over the chest. Page 2 November 10, 2013 Spiritually Speaking, continued from page 1 priest who was faithful to David the king in times when many were unfaithful servants. What is difficult to understand about this group is that it is supposed to represent purity of the faith and faithfulness to the covenant with God. However, in practice they became what we would call "a mafia." The attraction and addiction of a few powerful families, especially the family of Anás, made the Sadducees known for their skills in politics rather than what should characterize a spiritual group of people. Actually "spirituality" became for them an obstacle for the people of that "religious" group. Their material goods and political influence, which was growing, depended on "few moves on the chess board" in which there was no room for the supernatural or religious realms: angels, miracles, or resurrection of the dead. It came to the point that their priest became enemies of any manifestation of God that they couldn't control. The Mysteries of the Afterlife - Let’s finish these considerations with a short, more positive reflection about the mystery of the afterlife. The truth is that there are many things that we ignore. Maybe for us it is as difficult to anticipate the afterlife as it is for a fetus to anticipate what he or she can see after their birth: the world that they haven’t seen yet. I think it is good to know that we don't know; it is good to know that God has many things to give us, better and more things. Maybe a deeper comparison and also the more difficult to understand is the one related to the faithful departed and to angels. Right now we are not going to solve the theological questions about this topic, but we will only say that love, in its temporal dimension, has a seed of eternity: there is love beyond death... But its precise description or its proper beauty is more than what we can explain, say, or understand... for now at least. I love you my Lord, because you are love itself. I am sorry for whatever is in me that does not come from your love and does not reflect your love. If I am to become what you want me to be, it will happen only if I allow you to act in me. Lord Jesus Christ, help me to be a true child of the resurrection. Lord Jesus Christ, suddenly I see that I am more like the Sadducees than I had previously thought. Help me to have an open heart, alert to your will and a readiness to adapt to it. Forgive me my rationalism and smallmindedness. I trust in you.
