SPEAKING OUT IN LOVE
In the final verses of today’s Gospel reading Jesus says that when
two or three are gathered in his name, “there am I in the midst of them”
(Matthew 18:20). So we understand that fraternal correction is always undertaken in the presence of Jesus Christ.
Likewise, encouraging the good in others is not only the right thing
for us to do, it is a necessity. The LORD tells the prophet Ezekiel that if he
does not speak out to dissuade a person from evil, then he too will be held
responsible.
We live in a “do your own thing” age where moral objectivity is often
ignored. Clearly when the message we share with others is rooted in love,
our motives cannot ever be misinterpreted. As Saint Paul writes, “Love
does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans 13:10).
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
We know for certain that the sacrament of penance was a fairly rare
event in the life of a Christian in the early centuries, but that everyone had
a duty to admit their sins and ask forgiveness before giving thanks in the
Sunday Eucharist and receiving Christ’s Body and Blood at the table. Everyone today is familiar with this same ancient pattern. We also know about
Lent and its journey of renewal, and even those who are returning from
summer vacations may speak of a fresh perspective on life and a resolve
to do better. Saint Augustine spoke of a third kind of penance, beyond the
turning of the catechumens to a different life, beyond the normal everyday fresh starts, to a form that is severe and serious. Certain sins broke
faith with the community: the sinners were obliged to give their names to
the bishop and were barred from participation in the Eucharist. Augustine
mentioned sacrilege, adultery, and murder as the culprits, great wounds
for the perpetrator, wounds that were serious, deadly, mortal. Penance was
such a frightening prospect that many people delayed their baptism for fear
that they would sin, a practice with which Augustine was well acquainted.
Pastoral need would eventually call the church to reconsider its practice.

Prayer of the Faithful for the Sick
Prayer of the Faithful for the Deceased
Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the
world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our
sufferings in your own passion and
death. Hear this prayer for our sick
brothers and sister whom you have
redeemed. Strengthen their hope of
salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and
reign for ever and ever. Amen.
God, our shelter and our strength, you listen in love to the cry of
your people: hear the prayers we offer for our departed brothers
and sisters. Cleanse them of their sins and grant them the fullness
of redemption. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time - September 7, 2014

siempre”.

ST. BARBARA PARISH SCHOOL
“CommiƩed to Student Excellence”
Since 1964
ST. BARBARA
PARISH SCHOOL
MISSION STATEMENT
Every student is a child of God,
and is deserving of an opportunity
to receive the best Catholic education possible. St. Barbara School is
a Catholic parish school, serving
families in the city of Santa Ana and
other near-by locations. Our mission
is to create a safe, Catholic, Christian environment in which our students are able to become individuals
of faith who live the Gospel message, life-long learners, confident, effective communicators, responsible citizens in ourcommunities,
and respectful, health-conscious individuals.
DID YOU KNOW . . . St. Barbara School offers an after-school tutoring program for registered students who need additional assistance with homework or subject matter.
St. Barbara School Offering Tutoring Program
Meeting the needs of our students and families is an important goal of St. Barbara School. Parents are working longer hours and have less time to help their children with homework. Some parents do not have sufficient knowledge
in English to help their children with schoolwork. Under the direction of the principal, Mrs. Bloom, St. Barbara School
will make available a tutoring program scheduled as an after-school program for the convenience of busy parents.
The tutoring program will be designed to help and support students who need additional instruction in grade level
appropriate academic areas that align with their subject areas or homework assignments. Students can be enrolled
into this program by their parents or recommended by the classroom teachers.
The program will be held after school from 3:30-5:30 pm Monday through Friday when school is in session. Parents
will be able to choose the time and frequency of the tutoring. There is a reasonable fee to participate in this program.
It is our goal to ensure that each of our students is learning the academic skills needed for success.
