la palabra lo indica, HECHO representa las cosas hechas y nacidas en Nicaragua.
HECHO. Its infinitive form ‘hacer’ is Spanish meaning
to make, or to do. As the title of this magazine, HECHO
alludes to things made in, things done in, and things
born of Nicaragua.
Nuestro objetivo como revista y pagina web es compartir el arte, música, naturaleza, lugares y gente de
Nicaragua. Queremos que nuestros lectores exploren
la cultura de este país, haciendo énfasis en lo actual e
interesante. Cada edición bimensual de HECHO es una
travesía compuesta por ejes, fotografías, entrevistas,
ensayos y más. Nuestra página web www.hechomagazine.com constantemente actualizada, contiene eventos y contenidos exclusivos para mantener al tanto a
sus visitantes.Además, incluye una versión descargable

Our aim as a magazine and web destination is to share
the art, music, nature, people, and places of Nicaragua.
We want to lead our readers to explore the culture of
the country, with an emphasis on the now and the interesting. Each bimonthly issue of HECHO is a journey
through Nicaragua with features, photographs, interviews, essays, and more. Our website www.hechomagazine.com is updated with events and exclusive content,
including a downloadable version of every issue of the
magazine – making it accessible to people all over the
world.
En nuestra primera edición escogimos a Sala Bipolar como portada porque pensamos que representan
a HECHO. Su estilo es innovador y vanguardista al
igual que nuestro proyecto. Sala Bipolar está compuesta por estilos distintos que unidos forman uno solo,
esta misma idea se refleja en la estructura de nuestro
diseño, contenido bilingüe y en el equipo nicaragüense/
norteamericano. Pero sobre todo escogimos a Sala Bipolar porque nos gusta mucho su música.
For our inaugural issue we chose the band Sala Bipolar for our cover because we feel they are representative of what HECHO is about.The band’s style of music
is groundbreaking and on the forefront of an emerging scene in Nicaragua, as is HECHO. Sala Bipolar is
formed by two distinct styles coming together as one,
an idea reflected in HECHO’s bilingual structure, design, and in the Nicaraguan/North American makeup
of our team. But most of all, we chose Sala Bipolar to be
on our cover because they make great music.

a artista Graciela Guardado, ilustradora de nuestra
portada, es originaria de California. Actualmente reside en Los Ángeles donde trabaja como diseñadora gráfica.
Entre sus hobbies está cocinar comidas vegetarianas (www.
comahunger.blogspot.com), leer tiras cómicas y verse linda en
sus anteojos. En el 2006 ella visitó Nicaragua y encontró en
ella un lugar de inspiración.
“Mi visita a León probablemente fue el más interesante en
cuanto a inspiración. Los murales alrededor de la ciudad
están bellamente pintados y me sorprendieron bastante.
Recuerdo uno en particular que me dejo sin habla. Es de
dos siluetas, una en cada lado de una puerta, dentro de las
siluetas hay dibujos de escenas y personajes políticos. Los
colores usados y la mera idea de incorporar imágenes dentro
de una figura son muy popular hoy en día. Sin embargo ya
había sido hecho en León. Use un ejemplo de este estilo en el
cabello de mi ilustración de Sala Bipolar”.

ur cover artist, Graciela Guardado, is a California native now residing in Los Angeles where she works as an
artist and graphic designer. Her hobbies include vegetarian cooking (www.comahunger.blogspot.com), reading comic
books, and looking cute in glasses. In 2006 she visited Nicaragua and found a place of inspiration.
“My visit to Léon was probably the most interesting in
terms of artistic inspiration.The murals around the city are
beautifully painted and some of the styles were a real surprise to me. I remember one in particular blew me away. It
is of two silhouettes, one on each side of a door, and inside
the silhouettes are drawings of political figures and scenes.
The colors used and the very idea of incorporating images
within a silhouetted shape is popular in design today, yet it
was already done in Léon. I used an example of that style in
the hair of my illustration of Sala Bipolar.”

l final de uno de los muchos caminos de Carretera Vieja
a León se encuentra ‘el diamante en bruto’ llamado
Mesón Sur.Aunque describírlo a un amigo sin caer en clichés
puede ser difícil, no hay nada cliché sobre este restaurante
italiano anidado en las colinas que observan la Laguna de
Nejapa.
Beatriz Fernández Ferreira, la propietaria ítalo-argentina
se enorgullece de la reputación reservada de Mesón Sur,
inclusive cree que si el lugar se llenara a plenitud la pizza no
sabría tan bien.Todo el menú se basa en ingredientes frescos.
“La naturaleza es nuestro lujo”, afirma Fernández Ferreira.
Yo describiría la pizza horneada en leña de la misma manera,
simplemente lujosa.
El ambiente del lugar es bastante tranquilo. Jazz suave,
música brasileña y la abundancia de plantas hacen de su
exterior un buen lugar para relajarse con una copa de vino o
una cerveza bien fría.
Adentro, las paredes están adornadas con algunos cuadros
realizados por la misma Fernández Ferreira. Su casa y
estudio están ubicados arriba del restaurante.
Mesón Sur es el lugar ideal para escapar de la ciudad sin
salir de Managua. Es perfecto para los momentos en los
que quieres distraerte dejando atrás los bares con música
ochentera y televisores a todo volumen. En Mesón Sur
puedes obtener un pedazo de serenidad con tu pedazo de
pizza.

ff the beaten path’ of Carretera Vieja a León you can
find one of Managua’s‘best kept secrets,’ the‘diamond
in the rough’ that is Mesón Sur.And although you may have
trouble describing its location to a friend without resorting
to clichés, there is nothing cliché about this unique Italian
restaurant nestled in the hills overlooking Managua’s Laguna Nejapa.
Beatriz Fernandez Ferreira, the restaurant’s Italian-Argentinean owner, relishes in Mesón Sur’s reticent dignity, even
saying that if her restaurant was full they wouldn’t be able to
make the pizza as good as it is now. Everything is made from
fresh natural ingredients.“Nature is our luxury,” Fernandez
Ferreira says.And I would describe the pizza that comes out
of the wood-fired oven the same way, simply luxurious.
The ambiance of the restaurant is decidedly tranquil. Soft
jazz, Brazilian music, and an abundance of green plants,
make the outdoor seating a great spot to relax and unwind
with a glass of wine or a cold beer. Indoors, the walls are decorated with some of Fernandez Ferreira’s own paintings. Her
home and studio is located above the restaurant.
Mesón Sur is a great place to escape the city without actually leaving it. It’s a place for those times you feel like going
out but don’t want to be crammed in a bar with loud 80’s
music and tv’s; a place where you can have a slice of serenity
with your slice of pizza.

oon River Burritos es el lugar perfecto en Managua
para ir a comer muy buenos antojos mexicanos. La
gente con la que voy regularmente ya tienen escogidos sus
platos del menú: Big O, siempre elige los tres tacos de pollo, el
Chele Samoano no se cansa del burrito de camarón y a mí me
fascinan las quesadillas (pero por problemas de compromiso
siempre estoy cambiando entre las de res, pollo o carnitas).
oon River Burritos is the place in Managua for really
good, really fast Mexican food. Everyone I go there
with has their signature menu item: Big O always goes for
the three chicken tacos, Chele Samoan swears by the shrimp
burrito, and for me, I’m all about the quesadillas (I have a
problem with commitment though, so I’m always switching
it up between chicken, beef, and carnitas).
Los precios son razonables - aproximadamente $5 - y el servicio es rápido. Pero lo más importante: ¡las cervezas siempre
están heladísimas! He escuchado que la comida mexicana se
puede disfrutar sin una cerveza helada, pero yo no lo recomiendo.
The prices are reasonable – more or less around $5 – and the
service is always on point. Most important of all, the beer is
absolutely freeeezing! I’ve heard that Mexican food can be
enjoyed without cold beer, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
Además de la cerveza Moon River tiene un bar completo y un
buen ambiente para disfrutar con tus amigos. Abren hasta
tarde, especialmente en los fines de semana. Aunque no deja
de ser cierto que el hambre a veces me ha ganado la batalla
llevándome directo a las hamburguesas del carrito en frente
de Matrix, realmente no puedo imaginarme algo mejor que
terminar un viernes de fiesta con una deliciosa quesadilla o
una canasta de nachos de Moon River…por lo menos en lo
que a comida se refiere…

In addition to beer, Moon River offers a full bar and a great
atmosphere to kick back and relax with friends.They’re open
late too, especially on the weekends. It’s true that on occasion
I’ve been known to get down with a late night gut-bomb
burger from the carts in front of Matrix, but I truly can’t
imagine anything better at the end of a wild Friday night
than a cheesy quesadilla, or a basket of nachos from Moon
River… well, at least not anything food related…

etrás del escenario, vestida toda de negro con una bufanda abrazándole el cuello, Belén Cardenal está casi
lista, salvo por un poco de maquillaje, un shot de tequila y
tal vez más espacios vacíos llenos.
“Esperemos que venga más gente antes de empezar el show”,
dice Belén. Mientras tanto mira a través de la ventana al público formándose en el interior de La Casa de Los Mejía Godoy.
“Entonces arranquemos, no creo que venga más gente”, bromea su productor, tecladista y amigo, Guillermo Norory.

ackstage, dressed in all black with a scarf around her
neck, Belén Cardenal is almost ready, save for a little
makeup, a shot of tequila, and maybe a few more tables.
“Let’s just wait for more people to come before starting the
show,” says Belén peering through the window at the audience forming inside La Casa de Los Mejía Godoy.
“We should start then. I don’t think more people will come,”
jokes her producer, keyboardist and friend, Guillermo Norory.
“¡No jugués con mis nervios!”le responde Belén.
“Don’t play with my nerves!” she fires back with somewhat
of a laugh.
Su ansiedad es comprensible, porque aunque su carrera como
cantante lleve más de 10 años, el concierto de esta noche es
una celebración por el lanzamiento de su álbum debút llamado simplemente,‘Belén’.
Her anxiety is understandable, because although she has
been performing on stage for more than 10 years, tonight’s
concert is a celebration of her finally released debut album
entitled simply,‘Belén.’

El álbum tomó mucho tiempo en realizarse y probablemente no hubiese nacido sin el empujón de Norory quien lo
produjo y grabó en sus estudios, Momotombo Producciones.
El resultado final es un disco con una variedad de ritmos y
mezclas que combinan maravillosamente con la voz profunda de Belén.También lanza la jugada perfecta rodeándose de
colaboradores talentosos. El disco incluye canciones escritas
por Ramón Mejía (Perrozompopo) y arreglos de Clara Grün
y Juan Manuel Ledezma.
The album was a long time in the making and may not have
happened if it wasn’t for a push from Norory who produced
and recorded it at his Momotombo studios. The final result
is a disc with a variety of rhythms and melodies combining
wonderfully with Belén’s deep, knowing voice. She makes a
smart move surrounding herself with talented collaborators,
including songs penned by Ramon Mejía (Perrozompopo),
and arrangements from Clara Grün and Juan Manuel Ledezma, but the essence of the album is all her own.
Para cuando el show arranca, Norory se muestra contradicho, las mesas de la extensa Casa de Los Mejía Godoy se
llenaron por completo. Descalza en una alfombra, Belén se
presenta con seguridad en medio del escenario y entrega
una actuación llena de fuerza y pasión. Sentimientos que se
transmiten en su disco debút.
By the time the show starts, the tables in the large Casa de
Los Mejía Godoy have been filled. Barefoot on a rug, Belén
stands confidently in the middle of the stage and delivers a
performance full of the strength and passion that is so apparent on her new CD.

uando a Nicole‘Destiny’ Bus se le presentó la oportunidad de escapar del frío y la nieve de Holanda para venir
a Nicaragua no le fue muy difícil tomar la decisión. La cantautora de 19 años fue invitada a ser parte del II Encuentro Internacional de Cantautoras en Nicaragua. Durante
su visita brindó conciertos en Managua, León y Matagalpa
junto a sus colegas que participaron en dicho festival, Katia
Cardenal, Gaby Baca y Clara Grün entre otras.

Nicole, quién describe su estilo musical como soul con rock
suave, dice que fue la gente que conoció la que hizo su visita
al país increíble. Aunque la sorprendió el hecho que en Nicaragua les cueste tanto a las mujeres impulsar su carrera
musical, saber del esfuerzo que ellas realizan para ser valoradas la inspiró aún más. Nicole piensa que en Nicaragua“hay
mucho talento y valor saliendo de todas estas cantantes femeninas. Fue lindo verlo. Me enamoré de eso”.
Nicole, who describes her style of music as a lot of soul with
some soft rock, says it was the people she met that made her
experience in Nicaragua amazing. She also says she was surprised to learn that in this day and age it can still be difficult
for women in Nicaragua to get their music made. Realizing
how hard these musicians work and their struggle left her
even more inspired, saying,“There was so much courage and
strength coming out of all these female artists. It was beautiful to see that and I fell in love with it.”
Este viaje fue el primero que Nicole realizó a Nicaragua y
dice que espera con ansias su regreso al lugar que tanto la
inspira. Promete que la próxima vez se quedará por más
tiempo. Nicole dejó un mensaje para las cantuautoras del
país:“Nunca paren la música. A través de ella logran tocar
a la gente, todavía me toca a mí, aún estando de regreso en
Ámsterdam”.

hen the opportunity presented itself for Nicole ‘Destiny’Bus to leave behind the cold and snow of Holland
for a trip to Nicaragua, the 19-year-old said yes immediately.
As part of the second annual Encuentro Internacional de
Cantautoras, the singer-songwriter of Dutch and Curacoan
decent spent 4 days on tour in Managua, Leon and Matagalpa with a group of acclaimed female musicians including
Katia Cardenal, Gaby Baca and Clara Grün among others.
The trip was Nicole’s first to Nicaragua and she is anxious to
return for a longer period of time to a place that brought her
such inspiration. She implores the women she met to,“Never
stop the music. It touches people and it still touches me here,
back in Amsterdam.”

ikentios Chávez, alias Revuelta Sonora, está trabajando en un nuevo proyecto, se trata de Electro
Pinolero su primer material discográfico como DJ.
El concepto del álbum es hacerle nuevos arreglos a canciones
populares de la tradición nicaragüense proporcionando una
mezcla entre lo tradicional y la música electrónica.
Una de las canciones del álbum,‘Tululu Revuelta Mix’, ha
estado sonando en las radios y discotecas de todo el país. La
canción original, fue creada hace años por Dimensión Costeña, una banda dedicada a tocar el pegajoso ritmo del Palo de
Mayo, música tradicional de la Costa Atlántica de Nicaragua.
El video para este remix, dirigido por Israel Lewites y Steph
Biemans, rinde tributo a las raíces de la canción siendo filmado en Bluefields. Este es sobre un niño redescubriendo su
ciudad a través del lente de una cámara que cae en sus manos. La historia es entretenida y encaja bien con el concepto
general del álbum de Revuelta Sonora: utilizar tecnología
para reinterpretar y redescubrir algo ya conocido.

ikentios Chávez, aka Revuelta Sonora, has a new
project in the works: Electro Pinolero (pinolero is
a slang term for a Nicaraguan).The album remixes
and reimagines some of Nicaragua’s best-known songs, providing a link between the country’s traditional sound and
modern electronic music.
The second single from the album,‘Tululu Revuelta Mix,’ has
received steady radio and club play all over Nicaragua. The
original Tululu, released in the late‘70’s by Dimensión Costeña, was born from the Palo de Mayo rhythm and the rich Caribbean musical tradition of Nicaragua’s Atlantic Coast.
The video for this remix, directed by Israel Lewites and
Steph Biemans, pays homage to the song’s roots by being
filmed in Bluefields.The story follows a young boy as he uses
a newly acquired digital camera to get a fresh perspective
on the city he has known his entire life.The video is well produced, entertaining, and fits right in with the whole concept
of the Electro Pinolero album: using technology to reinterpret and rediscover something already known.

rojo y un mejor medio de transporte.Atrás quedaron los
días de andar pidiendo ride en Nicaragua, como lo hacía en
su programa de televisión Aventados. Ahora, como presentador y corresponsal de la edición nicaragüense de Metrópolis,
Biemens circula las calles con estilo en su motoneta blanca.
El programa fue desarrollado originalmente para la televisión de Holanda – de donde Biemens proviene – el concepto del show es una simple pregunta desde una perspectiva
global: ¿Que tan similares somos?
Nicaragua es el segundo país en tener su versión de Metrópolis. Cada semana, Biemens, con la colaboración de más de 50
corresponsales, presenta a los televidentes nicaragüenses
una mirada al mundo. En el programa se han tratado temas
como la superstición, la obesidad y los tradicionales quinceaños.
Los corresponsales envían videos provenientes de diferentes
países, incluyendo Tailandia, Estados Unidos, Sudáfrica, Colombia y la India. Estos son entrelazados con subtítulos y
entrevistas abordando el mismo tema. Resulta fascinante y
a veces humorístico observar las similitudes y contrastes entre diferentes personas, culturas y maneras de vivir la vida.
Metrópolis tiene el potencial de mostrar a los televidentes una

tef Biemans has traded in his backpack for a shiny red
helmet and an upgrade in transportation. Gone are the
days of hitchhiking through Nicaragua as he did on his former television show, Aventados. Now Biemans cruises the
streets in style on an all white vintage scooter, as host and
correspondent for the Nicaraguan edition of Metropolis.
Originally developed for TV in Holland (where Biemans was
born), the show’s concept is to take a global look at a simple
question: How similar are we?
Nicaragua is the second country to have its own version of
Metropolis. Each week Biemans, with the help of a worldwide
network of over 50 correspondents, presents viewers in Nicaragua with an international outlook on a single topic. Previous themes from the Dutch edition have included, superstition, prison, obesity, and sexual morals.
Video submitted by correspondents, from a diverse group of
countries, including Thailand, USA, South Africa, Colombia,
and India, is intertwined with footage and interviews filmed
here in Nicaragua. The result is a fascinating, and often humorous, look at the similarities and contrasts between different people, different cultures, and our different ways of life.
Metropolis has the potential to give viewers a refreshingly realistic look at things happening in today’s world.

distintivo, adornado con grandes portones de zinc
oxidados, encuentras barriles, cajas vacías de cerveza y
tablas de planchar - estos son solamente algunos de los
objetos cumpliendo una doble función como mesas en Bar
Fussion.
Adentro, el lounge transmite una vibra bohemia donde la
decoración posiblemente sean lo único más ecléctico que
la música. De su techo cuelga un sinfín de cámaras antiguas e incluso hasta una puerta. Sus paredes muestran

rosada de lo que parece ser una… bueno, según lo que he
escuche, una concha… La atmósfera cálida tiene aspecto
de un cafetería de San Francisco, donde una cerveza helada ocupa el lugar de un café caliente.
En la noche Fussion toma vida aunque no se note por
afuera. No hay luces de neón, no hay botellas de cerveza
inflable, ni siquiera un rótulo. Si la puerta negra de metal
esta abierta, también lo estará el bar.
Normalmente abren después de las 7 p.m. de jueves a domingo. Fussion es un gran lugar para relajarse y disfrutar. Los conciertos de los fines de semana atraen a mucha
gente, por lo que no es raro ver a músicos como Clara Grün
o Perrozompopo ayudando al propietario Atahualpa Mejía a atender. Este lugar único se ha convertido en uno de
los mejores en Nicaragua para observar y escuchar a los
músicos más creativos de este país.

n the other side of the nondescript white wall with
the large, rusty iron gate are barrels, empty beer
crates, and wood ironing boards - and these are just some
of the objects living a second life, reincarnated as tables in
the outdoor area of Managua’s Bar Fussion.
Inside, the lounge gives off a bohemian vibe, where the furnishings are possibly the only things more eclectic than
the music. Antique cameras and even a door hang from
the ceiling. Masks, murals and paintings cover the walls, as
well as a large pink photograph of what appears to be a…
well, from what I’ve been told it’s actually a conch… The
warm atmosphere is reminiscent of a San Francisco coffee
shop, but with cold beer playing the role of hot coffee.
At night Fussion comes alive, though you might not know
it from the outside. There are no neon lights, no giant inflatable beer bottles, there’s not even a sign out front. If
the black metal door is open, so is the bar.
Typically open after 7pm Thursday through Sunday, Fussion is a great place to relax and chill. Concerts on the
weekends attract bigger crowds and it isn’t uncommon on
a busy night to see musicians such as Clara Grün or Perrozompopo behind the bar helping owner Atahuallpa Mejia bartend.This unique venue has become one of the best
places in Nicaragua to see and hear the country’s most
cutting edge and creative music.

mantenerse vigente por tanto tiempo puede ser difícil en
esta ciudad.
En sus seis años Arribas ha solidificado su reputación
por ser uno de los lugares donde con mayor frecuencia se
puede disfrutar de música en vivo. Su cartelera semanal
muestra a los más reconocidos nombres de la música nicaragüense del momento. Perrozompopo, Milly Majuc y
nuestros artistas de portada Sala Bipolar con frecuencia
se encuentran animando al público en las alturas del bar.
Prensenciar conciertos u otro tipo de eventos, como el
show en vivo NNN, puede ser una experiencia diferente.
En Arribas el espacio que el artista comparte con el publico es muy intimo.
En los días de semana (martes a jueves) está abierto

f you’re ready to experience a crowd that’s a little more
of the grown and sexy variety, step your game upstairs
to Managua’s Arribas Bar Urbano.
While I have no idea what the distinction ‘Urban Bar’ is
supposed to mean beyond a label for marketing, it must be
a good thing because Arribas recently celebrated its 6th
anniversary, and staying relevant for that long can be a
tough thing in this city.
In that time Arribas has solidified its reputation as one of
the premier venues for live music in Managua. Its weekly
concerts offer a who’s-who of Nicaragua’s most popular
musicians. Perrozompopo, Milly Majuc, and our cover artists Sala Bipolar perform there on a regular basis. Watching a concert or other special event, such as a live performance of the comedy team NNN, at Arribus can be a more
intimate experience than other settings because of the
common space and closeness that the performers share
with their audience.
On weekdays (Tuesday-Thursday) Arribas opens in the
afternoons, usually featuring special promotions, making
it a great place to pre-funk or just unwind after work.The
banks of wide screen TV’s and refreshing, open-air atmosphere also make it a choice environment to watch the‘big’
game. On weekends the fun starts at 8pm (the bar is closed
Sunday and Monday).

Sala Bipolar is performing at Bar Fussion, an appropriate
setting for a band featuring musicians whose two distinct
styles have been fused together as one: Clara Grün, a prodigy of Nicaraguan music legend Carlos Mejía Godoy, with
her poppy rock piano background and singer-songwriter
mentality, and DJ Revuelta Sonora, an obsessive electronica
producer, and gifted drummer with a lust for beats.
The yellow and red lights come alive, spinning back and
forth like tiny over-caffeinated robots. A simple electronic
drum loop breaks the silence. Ominous piano chords follow
as Clara Grün’s distinct voice comes in crooning hauntingly
as she sits behind rows of keyboards.Then at the precise moment,‘crash,’ a relentless combination of musical body shots
reverberate through the darkness as Revuelta Sonora assaults his drum set, taking the percussion from a backing
element and bringing it into the foreground, filling out the
body of the music as it permeates the thick Managua night.

Sala Bipolar se formó en el 2006 después de que Neus, esposa
y representante de Revuelta, sugiriera que la unión musical
entre Clara y él tendría un potencial interesante.
“Ella no tenía idea que tipo de música resultaría, solo sabía
que yo como cantautora, con mi habilidad para la composición y como pianista, podría fusionar con Revuelta, ingeniero en sonido y Dj y juntos crear algo particular. Fue
como un experimento químico, combinar dos elementos y
esperar que la mezcla funcione”, dice Clara.
Revuelta se sienta en su estudio ubicado en Espacio Sur. Frente a él varios monitores de computadora, las pantallas llenas de botones electrónicos, niveles, números y colores. Para
alguien que no está acostumbrado a los programas de producción musical, la escena se asemeja a la infinita cadena de
numeros verdes de The Matrix. Pero como los personajes en
la película, Revuelta no ve su mundo en caos. El ve música.
Sala Bipolar formed in late 2006 after Neus, Revuelta’s wife
and manager, suggested that collaboration between the pair
of high-profile musicians could potentially be great, and if
nothing else, interesting.
“She had no idea what type of music would come out. She
just knew that me as a songwriter, and me as far as composition, as a singer and a piano player could pretty much
fuse with Bikentios as a DJ and a sound engineer and create something particular. It was like a chemical experiment.
Put two elements together and hope that it works out,” says
Clara.
Revuelta sits in a chair at his studio in Espacio Sur. In front
of him are several computer monitors, the screens filled with
virtual knobs and levels, numbers and colors.To someone unaccustomed to music production software the whole thing is
reminiscent of the endless chains of green numbers in The
Matrix. But like the characters in that movie, Revuelta sees
his world in the chaos. He sees his music.

idea?
Clara ve música también, pero en su cabeza. Se sienta en el
piso al lado de Revuelta, sus delgadas piernas cruzadas. En
su regazo descansa un pequeño teclado conectado a la Mac
G5 de Revuelta Sonora. El aprieta un botón y el ritmo de un
tambor llena la sala de sonido. Clara se concentra, viendo la
música, llevando la cuenta en su mente.Toca una melodía en
su teclado, se detiene, arruga la cara y le dice que empiece de
nuevo. El lo hace. Ella lo intenta otra vez. Nada. Una vez más.
El proceso continúa hasta que Clara encuentra algo que le
gusta. Revuelta no parece estar muy de acuerdo.
“Suena raro”, le dice Revuelta, sus ojos fijados en el monitor.
“¿No es esa la idea?” le contesta ella, girando su cabeza hacia él. Revuelta la mira y luego a la pantalla, riendo un poco
mientras se pasa la mano por su conocido afro.
Clara sees music too, but it’s all in her head. She sits next
to him on the floor, a small USB keyboard connected to
Revuelta’s G5 Mac rests on her lap. He taps a key and the
‘boom-bap’ of a drum track fills the room. Clara focuses, seeing the music, counting it in her head. She plays a melody
on the keyboard, stops, scrunches up her face and asks him
to take it from the top. He does. She tries again. Nope. One
more time… The process continues until Clara seems to find
something she likes. Revuelta seems less enthusiastic.
“It sounds weird,”he says, eyes fixed on the monitor.
“Well isn’t that the idea?” she replies, tilting her head up at
him. Revuelta glances down at her, then back at the screen,
chuckling a little as he runs his hand over his trademark
baby afro.

En los últimos dos años la idea detrás de la banda ha evolucionado constamentemente.
Al comienzo Clara presentaba sus canciones y melodías de
piano a Revuelta. Con su experiencia en ingenería en sonido
y producción, era él quién creaba los ritmos a través de la
batería y singulares mezclas. Las pistas estaban en un constante vaivén, uno de ellos trabajaba en una canción, luego
el otro repasaba los cambios y vice versa.
Con el paso del tiempo Sala Bipolar comenzó a crear sus
canciones en conjunto. Mientras aprendían el uno del otro,
la colaboración se volvió más fácil. Se dieron cuenta que el
proceso no tenía que ser complicado para obtener buenos
resultados. Revuelta describe esto como llegar a entender
“que las cosas simples también tienen gusto y sabor”.
Over the past two years the idea behind the band has been
evolving constantly. When the duo first began recording,
Clara would present her songs and piano harmonies to Revuelta. With his expertise as a sound engineer and producer,
he was responsible for crafting the beats through the use
of drum loops, samples and DJing.The two halves worked
separately.Tracks were bounced back and forth, with the
other person taking a song, working on it and bringing it
back.
Over time, Sala Bipolar began creating songs together and
as the pair learned more about each other musically, collaboration became easier.They realized that the process didn’t
have to be complicated to be good. Revuelta describes it as
coming to the understanding“that simple things also have
taste and flavor.”

Trabajando juntos, los límites creativos se derrumban
mientras el estilo y la personalidad de los dos se encuentran.
Revuelta aprendió que hay más en la composición musical
que únicamente las mezclas.Al igual que Clara aprendió a
aceptar que cada canción que escribe no tiene que hacerla
sangrar o llorar en el piano. Esto les abrió las puertas a la
libertad de escribir canciones casuales y divertidas.
Los dos músicos continúan aprendiendo el uno del otro, esto
hace que su trabajo sea mucho más auténtico.
“Ahora estamos más enfocados en lo que llamamos el concepto de Sala Bipolar”, dice Clara.“No teníamos la intención
de hacerlo de una forma o que sonará de cierta manera. El
hecho de que ahora Revuelta toca la batería en los conciertos y que yo esté en la guitarra cambió el sonido las canciones que hicimos en los primeros meses. Esto no quiere decir

El albúm debút de Sala Bipolar estará disponible a mediados de

Working together the boundaries of creation became blurred
as the two sides found their styles and personalities mixing.
Revuelta learned more about composing songs, as opposed
to simply making beats. Likewise, Clara credits the experience with helping her to“separate herself from herself,”by
leading her to accept that as a songwriter every song she
writes doesn’t need to make her bleed or cry over her piano.
It opened her up to the freedom of being able to write songs
that are casual and fun or even sensational.
The two musicians say that learning from one another has
made working together much more interesting. It has also
made the music more interesting, allowing the group’s sound
to develop organically.
“Now that we’re more focused on the concept of Sala Bipolar,
it’s sprung out naturally,”says Clara.“We’ve had no intention

of making it this way, or making it sound that way.The fact
that Revuelta is now playing the drums in the concerts and
that I’m playing the guitar changed the original songs that
we made in the first couple of months.They developed their
own personality… they’re not better than the other ones,
they’re evolved.”
A similar statement can be made regarding Revuelta Sonora
and Clara Grün.Through the process of collaboration, the
two artists have come together as a group and developed a
musical personality. Sala Bipolar is not better than either of
them individually, it’s them together, evolved.

sonidos y estilos. Bikentios, alias DJ Revuelta Sonora,
está a cargo de las mezclas en su ya conocida consola, Guillermo Norory, lanza sonidos espontáneos detrás de su teclado, y
Augusto Mejía mantiene el ritmo encendido con la percusión.
El resultado de esta alianza es una presentación improvisada
que mantiene a los asistentes bailando por aproximadamente

The interaction between the band is reminiscent of jazz
musicians improvising and feeding off of each other...
All three members of Afrobeat are also part of the funk
band Momotombo. About two years ago they decided it
would be a fun idea to create an additional group that would
offer them unlimited freedom during live performances.
The Afrobeat concept became their outlet for creating
totally impulsive sessions of music and letting a moment’s
inspiration guide them. There is no structure or preparation
before a show; everything you see onstage is spontaneous.The
interaction between the band is reminiscent of jazz musicians
improvising and feeding off of each other, and because of this
no performance is ever the same.
DJ Revuelta Sonora is the maestro; he is responsible for
laying down the main beat based on the records he decides
to play. The rest of the group improvises off of his lead, with

harmonies and effects from Norory’s keyboard, and a little
bit of afro-latin percussion and the occasional inaudible vocal
styling of Mejía. One of the great things about watching the
band perform is that it is impossible to know what’s coming
next. Sometimes it’s even hard for the band members. At a
recent show in Arribas Bar, Sonora mixed in a record that
seemed to come as a surprise to the drummer Mejía, who
threw him a puzzled look, yet began playing along to the
beat with barely a pause. To the audience it sounded as if it
had been planned that way all along, and that’s the beauty of
Afrobeat.The trio jammed nonstop for well over an hour, lost
in an hypnotic aural groove; leaving the crowd transfixed, and
in the end, calling out for more.

olcano Momotombo stands off in the horizon
overlooking the shore of Lake Xolotlán in Managua,
watching, and waiting. Geologists say it has not erupted
since 1905.They are wrong.Those in the know will tell you
that Momotombo continues to erupt, up to several times
a month, spewing forth hot guitar licks, molten keyboard
riffs, burning drum sticks and smoldering sampled hits.

Dirigido por Guillermo Norory, el hijo del volcán, y su banda,
este grupo de músicos se ha unido para formar una mezcla
única de ideas y sonido. Representan múltiples géneros, no
se les escapa ninguno. Una periodista mexicana nombró
el estilo de Momotombo como “electro latin punchis jazz”,
yo lo describo como “electro-jazz-funk, suavizado con el
latín-psico-rock con un poco de pop”. Como sea que que lo
nombren, es difícil encontrar a dos personas que lo escuchen
y lo describan su estilo de la misma manera.
Como grupo, Momotombo ha estado activo por
aproximadamente ocho años. En este tiempo el alineamiento
ha cambiado un poco, pero Norory y sus producciones se
han mantenido constantes. En el 2005 el álbum titulado
‘Momotombo’ fue lanzado al mercado, y más recientemente,
en el 2007, salió un disco con dos pistas. La alineación actual
de la banda incluye algunos de los músicos más trabajadores
de Managua, Bikentios Chávez en la batería,Augusto Mejía en
el bajo, y Andrés Sánchez en la guitarra.
Momotombo que no le teme a la colaboración,tanto entre ellos

Momotombo planea lanzar un nuevo disco en este año y

además se mantiene ocupado con Momotombo Producciones.
Fundada hace tres años con el fin de ayudar a desarrollar el
arte y las expresiones musicales en Nicaragua. Momotombo
Producciones ha realizado grabaciones para artistas como
Perrozompopo, Milly Majuc y el disco debút de Belén
Cardenal. Con todo este expediente Norory asegura que el
nombre de Momotombo continuará siendo asociado con las
maravillas de Nicaragua, naturales y artísticas.
Led by Guillermo Norory, the self-proclaimed son of the
volcano, the band Momotombo has come together to form a
unique blend of sounds and ideas. Multiple genres, let alone
one, cannot contain their sound. A Mexican journalist called
their instrumental music‘electro latin punchis jazz.’I describe
it as ‘electro-jazz-funk smoothed out on the latin-psych-rock
tip with a pop feel, appeal.’ Anything you call it, it’s difficult
to imagine that two people would hear it and describe it the
same way. That is a testament to both the group’s creativity
and the uniqueness of their style.
As a band, Momotombo has been active for close to 8 years. In
2005, the self-titled debut album ‘Momotombo’ was released,
and more recently a 2-track EP dropped in’07. Over that time
the lineup has fluctuated, but Norory and his production
has remained constant. The current band includes a few of
Managua’s hardest working musicians: Bikentios Chavez on
drums,Augusto Mejía on bass, and Andres Sanchez on guitar.
Momotombo is a band based on collaboration, within itself
and with other artists. Special guests are common at their live
shows and have included Carlos Luis Mejía, Clara Grün and
more recently Belén Cardenal. However musicians are not
their only collaborators. The ‘Minister of the Image,’ Israel
Lewites, creates the trippy videos that accompany many of
Momotombo’s performances and correlate with the music
as it is being played. In December Momotombo headlined a
show at Bar Fussion where the artist Dirian spontaneously
painted a mural behind the band as they played. Norory says
that the music of Momotombo evokes colors and landscapes
and for these reasons it is only natural that the band works
with visuals, adding another dimension to their live shows.
In addition to continuing to tour, Momotombo has plans to
release a new studio album in 2009. Norory also stays busy
with his Momotombo Production Company. Founded three
years ago to help the development of the art and musical
expressions of Nicaragua, Momotombo Productions has
recorded material for the likes of Perrozompopo, Milly Majuc,
and the recent debut album from Belén Cardenal. With all of
his endeavors, Guillermo Norory has ensured that the name
Momotombo will continue to be associated with Nicaragua’s
wonders, both natural and artistic.

La camioneta a la cual seguíamos se detuvo de repente en
una estrecha calle. La conmoción, el comercio y el incesante
ruido del tráfico estremece el panorama. Mientras tanto una
interminable fila de vehículos, peatones y carretones pelean
por avanzar. Compradores corretean de un lado a otro, dentro y fuera de las tiendas que se alinean en el camino confundiéndose con vendedores que pasan en medio del relajo
sin precaución, cargando bolsas de agua, productos para el
hogar y probablemente cualquier otra cosa que se puedan
imaginar.
The truck we are following stops suddenly on a narrow street.
We are surrounded by commotion and commerce. Rows of
taxis and buses blast their horns as they jockey for position.
People scurry in and out of the countless stores that line the
way. Vendors on foot weave through the mess of cars, selling
plastic bags of water, home goods, and probably anything
else you could imagine.

los casos prostituirse. La educación no es primordial para estos niños y sus padres. Su prioridad es sobrevivir. Fundado
en el 2000, con el fin de que todos estos niños que habitan en
el mercado reciban la educación que se merecen, Pan y Amor

también trabaja en su auto estima y motivación personal.
Entramos a través de la misma puerta oxidada en un buen
momento, el centro estaba invadido risas alborotadas de niños que reunidos disfrutaban de un espectáculo de primera
que el payaso Pipo preparó para ellos.
“Levanten la mano… (Todos levantan sus manos)”, Pipo continúa,“…los que no se bañaron hoy”. Los niños soltaron sus
sonoras carcajadas y como una reacción natural la risa nos
contagió haciéndonos reír con ellos. La atmósfera de alegría
me hizo olvidar por un momento lo que estos niños viven
fuera de Pan y Amor.

as I realize we are here, El Centro Escolar Pan Y Amor. It’s
a school in the most unlikely of places, Managua’s notorious
Mercado Oriental.
This sprawling market, a city within a city, is home to thousands. For many of the families here formal education is not a
serious consideration.Why send kids to school when they can
make money working now? Unfortunately,‘jobs’ can include
anything and everything, from begging, scavenging, selling
gum or food, to thievery and prostitution. Pan Y Amor was
founded in 2000 in large part to provide these children on the
margins with an opportunity to attend school, and to help
parents in the community realize the long-term benefits of
an education.
I get out of the truck and cross the street, entering through
the same rusty door as the kids. I am a little surprised to be
greeted by the sound of laughter. Today is a special day at
the school, the younger kids are gathered in a large open-air
room, everyone seems happy, captivated by the charm of the
most popular clown of Nicaragua, Pipo.
“Raise your hands…(all the children raise their hands),”Pipo
continues, “…if you didn’t take a shower today!” The kids
erupt into laughter and like a little girl I smile and laugh
along with them. The atmosphere today is so light, I almost
forget that for many of the students, life outside the school is
a world in ruins; a place where children are forced to grow up
before their time.

Tal es el caso de Isabel que junto a sus tres hermanitos asisten
a este centro. Ella y su familia viven en un edificio en ruinas
abandonado después del terremoto de 1972. En su sombrío
interior no hay indicios de energía eléctrica, no hay divisiones
entre viviendas, no existen los muebles. Los rodea la incertidumbre, el peligro y un asador hecho de un barril y partes
viejas de un abanico en los que cocinan los pocos alimentos
que consiguen. Hasta hace poco la familia de la niña compartía este espacio con otras siete familias, pero conflictos
habitacionales entre los vecinos que consumían drogas y alcohol provocaron un incendio que arrasó con gran parte del
lugar, dejando únicamente a Isabel y a los suyos como huéspedes.
La abuela de los niños es quien se encarga de ellos luchando
diariamente con su edad y las múltiples enfermedades que la
acompañan. El padre no existe, la madre ha vuelto a sus an58 hecho
danzas, desapareciendose por días sin dar aviso de su paradero. El rol de“mama” ha caído sobre los hombros de la niña de
apenas 10 años de edad siendo ella quien lava la ropa, cocina y
alista a sus hermanitos para que asistan a la escuela.
Pan y Amor provee a niños como Isabel y sus hermanitos la
vida que todo niño debe tener aunque sea por unas horas. Se
ha convertido en un lugar de esperanza. Se espera que esto los
prepare para un futuro distinto lejos de los muchos patrones
de maldad, vagancia y vicios que los rodea en el Mercado más
grande de Centroamérica.

Isabel is one of these students. She lives with her family in a
dilapidated concrete building that was abandoned after Managua’s great earthquake of 1972. Inside it is dark, there is no
power, no rooms, and no real furniture; just an empty square
of concrete, a couple crates to sit on, and a grill made from a
barrel and an old fan. The space had been shared with seven
other families, but fights between inhabitants fueled by drugs
and alcohol led to a fire and since then only Isabel’s family
remains.
Grandma does what she can to take care of Isabel and her
three younger brothers, who are all enrolled at Pan Y Amor,
but her illness and old age make it difficult.Their mother had
been living with them but according to Grandma she has
turned back to drugs and sniffing glue and disappears for
days on end.The role of‘mom’ has fallen to 10-year-old Isabel.
She washes the clothes, cooks the food and gets her brothers
ready for school. It’s more responsibility than any girl her age
should have to deal with, but she does it willingly because her
family needs her.
Mercado Oriental needs Pan Y Amor. The school gives children like Isabel and her brothers a place of stability in a
world with none. It offers a safe haven where, at least for a
little while, kids can be kids. And perhaps most importantly,
Pan Y Amor provides the children of the market with the invaluable opportunity to expect more from life.

El Mercado Oriental, un comercio en expansión
lleno de bullicio, en él puedes comprar lo que se te
ocurra, desde piezas de helicópteros, tilas de marihuana y hasta abortos ilegales. Algunos taxistas
dicen que puedes armar tu propio avión comprando las piezas en el mercado.
Mercado Oriental is a bustling, sprawling hub of
commerce and tumult. Everything from helicopter parts to a dime bag of weed to illegal abortions can be bought here. Some taxi drivers say
you could put together your own airplane by buying all the different parts in the market.

Considerado el mercado más grande de Centro América, el
desordenado Oriental se incendió el 31 de Julio de 2008 dejando reducido a cenizas cuatro de sus manzanas que contenían 1,300 tramos. Los bomberos intentaron apagar el
fuego por más de 24 horas pero por falta de presión y fuentes de agua les fue imposible. Ruth Herrera, Presidente de
Enacal (Empresa Nicaragüense de Acueductos y Alcantarillados) atribuyó la catástrofe a los ladrones que demenuzan
las fuentes de agua para revender sus piezas como chatarra.
Semanas después del incendio me aventuré por la zona
afectada. Los mercaderes recogían lo que quedó de sus tiendas. El lugar aún parecía como si el incendio hubiese ocurrido ayer: hollín negro y mugre, zinc sarroso y quebrado, indicaban peligro por todos lados. Aún así el desastre no detuvo
los negocios. Vendedores ambulantes cargando sacos con
bolsas de agua, paletas y chicles caminaban por la alfombra
de cenizas ejerciendo su oficio, algunos de ellos descalzos. El
hollín cubría sus pies y tobillos como calcetines. Mientras
tanto un insoportable vendedor de agua que hablaba inglés
insistía en guiarme por la zona tal como Virgilio conducía a
Dante a través del infierno.
Subí a una pared quemada que en algún momento fue el
tramo de algún comerciante para tener una mejor visión de
la destrucción. Observe a los chatarreros y colectores de escombros, muchos de ellos niños, escavando los restos carbonizados del mercado para vender.
Pasado el desastre, a los afectados se les prometió 3.5 millones de córdobas en crédito para reconstruir los daños. Esto
ayudará a una fracción de los comerciantes a levantarse nuevamente.
Said to be Central America’s largest market, the Oriental
was scorched in a July 31 fire that burned four city blocks
and 1,300 shops. Firefighters couldn’t put out the blaze for
more than 24 hours because of a lack of water pressure and
functioning fire hydrants. Ruth Herrera, the president of
Nicaragua’s Water and Sewage Company (ENACAL), later
blamed the catastrophe on thieves who had stripped down
hydrants to resell the copper and metal as scrap.
Weeks after the fire I walked through the market. Merchants
picked up the pieces of their ashen livelihoods, as the place
still looked like it had burned yesterday: black soot and
grime; jagged rusty beams; hazards all around.The disaster
didn’t stop everyone from doing business though. Vendors
carrying sacks full of small water bags, lollipops and gum
walked through a carpet of ash plying their trade, some barefoot. Soot covered their feet and ankles like black socks. An
obnoxious English-speaking water vendor insisted on guiding me around the place like dirt-caked Virgil taking Dante
through the Inferno.
I climbed up onto a seared wall that was once part of someone’s shop to get a better view of the destruction. I watched
as ‘chatarreros,’ or scrap collectors, many of them kids, scavenged the charred remains of the market, looking for anything they could resell as scrap.
In the wake of the fire, the government promised 700 of the
affected workers $3.5 million in credits to reconstruct their
shops. However, from a disaster that caused an estimated
$100 million in damages, the assistance will only help a fraction of shop owners get back on their feet.

LA NOCHE DE LUCHA
S
i la ves en pleno día, con su apariencia de modelo, cabello
impecable y atuendo perfecto, nunca imaginarías que
LUCHA es el tipo de mujer que disfruta ensuciarse las manos, literalmente.
“Tenemos que encontrar una pared, quiero desbaratar este
manicure”, dice la alta y delgada rubia de treinta y dos años
mientras cruzamos Managua en una SUV llena de pintura
aerosol.
Buscamos un lugar para que LUCHA y sus compañeros
grafiteros CRON y VECK puedan dibujar antes de que salga el sol.
Llegamos a Carretera Norte, sus paredes ya conocen el grafiti. Cerca del canvas de concreto que ellos escogen había hay
una montaña de basura quemandose, iluminando la noche y
penetrando nuestras fosas nasales.
LUCHA, una nicaragüense pionera en grafiti, ahora reside
en el Bronx, Nueva York. Ella es casi diez años mayor que sus
colegas grafiteros y el respeto que le demuestran es notable,
al igual que su compañerismo. Los tres amigos se toman su
tiempo para escribir mientras bromean entre ellos.
Las luces delanteras de un vehículo cortan la oscuridad de la
noche, es la policía.
Los que obserbavamos a los artístas urbanos nos tensionamos. Los grafiteros siguen en lo suyo descartando nuestra
advertencia y dándole a la camioneta azul que se parquea
detrás de ellos un vistazo insignificante por encima del hombro.
Mientras la camioneta se detiene cuatro oficiales entran a la
escena, ven las ocho o más latas de pintura de aerosol vacías

en el piso y la botella de agua que está al lado. Miran a LUCHA y a sus amigos mientras continúan escribiendo. Nos miran a nosotros detrás de ellos documentando la experiencia.
Siendo de los Estados y sabiendo la relación volátil que existe entre los grafiteros y la policía, presiento que algo está a
punto de suceder.
El amigo de LUCHA, Jake, que la visita desde San Francisco
está en medio de todo y le explica a los policías que solamente
están haciendo grafiti y que todo está tranquilo.
La policía espera allí unos minutos más observando de cerca,
hasta que el conductor mete el cambio, da la vuelta y se va en
medio de la noche sin decir una sola palabra.

the experience.
Being from the States and knowing the volatile relationship
that exists there between graffiti writers and the police, I
know something is about to go down.
LUCHA’s friend Jake, visiting from San Fran, who is watching with us, explains to them that it’s just some graffiti and
everything is‘tranquilo.’
The police sit there for a few more seconds staring intently.
The driver throws the truck in gear, turns around, and heads
off into the night without saying a word.

Los grafiteros ni siquiera lo notan y siguen escribiendo en
la pared.
Hora y media después, cuando terminan, nos amontonamos
en la camioneta y nos dirigimos de regreso a casa, asegurándonos que dos infaltables six packs de Toña estuvieran junto
a nosotros.
Luego de un par de rondas es hora de decir buenas noches…
o buenos días ya que son las cuatro de la mañana. Les digo
adiós a los muchachos y le doy a LUCHA un gran abrazo.
Mientras se voltea para irse noto sus dedos cubiertos de
pintura azul y negra. Pensé en lo desbaratado que quedó su
manicure.

The three of us from Managua don’t even acknowledge it and
keep writing.
Half an hour later, with the ‘throwies’ done, we pile back in
the truck and head back to the house, making sure to secure
two essential 6-packs of Toña on the way.
After a couple rounds it’s time to call it a night… or a morning, as it is 4 AM. I say goodbye to the guys and give LUCHA
a hug. As she turns to leave I glance down at her hands and
see fingers covered in blue and black paint.That is one fucked
up manicure I think to myself.
I
f you saw her in the middle of the day, with her modellooks, impeccable hair, and spotless attire, you would never guess that LUCHA has always been the type of female
who enjoys getting her hands dirty, literally.
“We need to find a wall, I wanna fuck up this manicure!”the
tall, slim 32-year-old says as we ride through the Managua
night in an SUV filled with spray paint.
We’re looking for a spot where LUCHA and her fellow bombers CRON and VECK can get a few ‘throwies’ in before the
sun comes up.
We settle on a wall close to Carretera Norte, one that is no
stranger to graffiti. Just down the way a mountain of garbage burns, lighting up the night and our nostrils.
LUCHA, a Nicaragüense OG of graffiti, who now resides
in the Bronx New York, is almost 10 years older than her
bombing companions and the respect they have for her is
apparent, as is the comradery. The three friends take their
time writing; enjoying the chance to joke and banter with
one another.
Headlights cut through the black of night, it’s the police…
Those of us watching tense up. The writers shrug off our
warning and keep working without so much as a glance at
the blue truck that is pulling up behind them.
As the truck stops the four officers take in the scene. They
look at the 8 or so cans of spray paint resting on the ground
and the bottled water next to it. They look at LUCHA and
her friends as they keep writing.

IN THE CLOUDS
En octubre del 2008, la suerte me alcanza como una
invitación solicitada, un diminuto avión de utilería
con cincuenta años de uso y un viaje trans nacional de
un día de Managua a la RAAN (Región Autónoma del
Atlántico Norte).
Despegamos justo cuando el sol salía, mientras
las nubes aún estaban bajas. El Cessna en el que
viajábamos volaba a unos cuantos miles de pies de
altura.Ver la topografía cubierta de nubes tan de cerca
es etéreo. Le dije a mi guía sobre lo bello que todo me
parecía. El me respondió que el viaje de vuelta podría
hacerme cambiar de idea.
Para el viaje de regreso con mucho entusiasmo escojo
el asiento de co-piloto. Para este tiempo el calor del
día ha elevado las nubes a nuestra altura de vuelo,
haciendo que a veces se dificulte ver más que una
brillante oscuridad mientras nos rodea.
El piloto se muestra contento al dejar que el volante
automático nos muestra el camino a casa. Con cada
nube que pasamos contemplo la muerte en el fondo
de mi cabeza; mas emocionado que asustado, sin poder
imaginar una manera más bella para que todo termine.
El sonido de las hélices se desvanece y el paisaje se
mueve lentamente, permanesco consciente de todo lo
que veo.

October 2008, fortune finds me in the form of a
solicited invitation, a diminutive 50-year-old prop
plane, and a trans-Nicaraguan day trip from Managua
to la RAAN (North Atlantic Autonomous Region).
We take off early as the sun is rising and the clouds
are low. Our Cessna’s cruising altitude is not more
than a few thousand feet. Seeing the cloud-covered
topography so closely is ethereal. I express to my
guide how amazing I find it all. He replies the flight
back might change my mind.
For our afternoon return I enthusiastically opt for the
co-pilot chair. By this time the day’s heat has elevated
the clouds to our cruising altitude, at times making it
difficult to see much more than bright obscurity as it
surrounds us.
To my surprise the pilot is content letting the
automatic steering system show us the way home.
With every cloud we pass through I contemplate
death in the back of my mind, excited more than
frightened, unable to imagine a more beautiful way
to die.The sound of the propeller fades, the landscape
moves slowly, and at once I’m aware of everything.

EL SUEÑO DE LONNIE RUIZ GÓMEZ
LONNIE’S DREAM
D
esde temprana edad, la vida de Lonnie Ruiz Gómez
se llenó de imaginación y oscuridad. Oscuridad real.
El creció en Managua, Nicaragua, en un lugar en el que
pasaba mucho tiempo sin electricidad. Para entretenerlo, su
bisabuela solía contarle leyendas e historias de miedo. A la
vez él y sus amigos creaban sus propios cuentos, personajes
y juegos. Lonnie consideró todo esto muy imaginativo y le
ayudó a desarrollar un elevado sentido de creatividad.
Años más tarde, Lonnie participó en un concurso en el
cual descubrió su pasión y cambió la dirección de su vida.
Se trataba de ‘Cuéntamelo Otra Vez’, una competencia en
la cual los participantes contaban una leyenda nacional
por medio de tres ilustraciones. Lonnie ha dibujado desde
pequeño, pero este concurso le permitió explorar algo un poco
diferente. El participó y fue premiado con el tercer lugar,
pero mas importante aún, descubrió su habilidad natural de
contar historias a través de imágenes. Este trayecto le abrió
las puertas a su creatividad. Lonnie descubrió una forma de
expresar su interior visualmente y asi su arte remplazó las
palabras que muchas veces le faltaron. Un año después él
participó nuevamente, esta vez se llevó el primer lugar.

rom early on, the life of Lonnie Ruiz Gómez was filled
with imagination and darkness. Literal darkness. He
grew up in Managua, Nicaragua, in a place where many
days his family was without electricity. To pass the time his
Grandmother would tell scary stories, and he and his friends
would go off and create their own dark tales, characters,
and games. Lonnie credits these imaginary adventures
with helping him develop a heightened sense of creativity.
Many years later, Lonnie would enter a contest that would
change the direction of his life and uncover his passion.
The contest was ‘Cuentamelo Otra Vez’ and participants
were asked to tell a popular story using three illustrations.
Lonnie had always been into drawing, but this contest
was a chance for him to try something a little different. He
submitted his illustrations and was awarded third place,
but more importantly, he discovered his natural ability to
tell stories through his images, and in the process opened
up an outlet for his creativity. Where words had sometimes
failed him, Lonnie found that he could express his inner self
and his imagination visually. The following year he entered
the contest again and took first place.

En el 2007 ‘Un Naufragio Inesperado’ – escrito por Ulises
Salazar Medrano – se convirtió en el primer libro publicado
ilustrado por Lonnie. El se refiere a este proyecto como el
que le abrió los ojos y lo hizo ver claramente que ilustrar era
lo que el deseaba hacer en su vida.
Los personajes que Lonnie crea son peculiares, un poco
raros, tenebrosos y hasta feos, pero al mismo tiempo son
dulces y simpáticos. Hay un sentido de contradicción en sus
ilustraciones. Sus detalles son impecables; colores cálidos y
texturas, crean composiciones hermosas. Aunque su trabajo
suele ser un poco oscuro siempre encontramos un toque de
luz y alegría. De manera que no nos sorprende que las creaciones de Tim Burton sean parte de sus influencias.
Además del trabajo de Burton y el de otros ilustradores,
Lonnie dice que encuentra inspiración en un poco de todo.
“Como diseñador, siempre tienes que estar mirando a todos lados. Tenemos que ser como una cámara de video, que
graba cada imagen que nuestros ojos captan y en el proceso
creativo lo reciclamos.”

In 2007, ‘Un Naufragio Inesperado’ – written by Ulises
Salazar Medrano – became the first book published using Lonnie’s illustrations. He also calls it the project that
opened his eyes and made him see clearly that illustration
was what he wanted to do with his life. The characters Lonnie creates are often peculiar and a bit odd, a little scary
and sometimes ugly, yet at the same time they are cute and
endearing. There is a sense of weirdness and contradiction
in his illustrations. His details are impeccable; soft colors
and textures, creating beautiful compositions. As dark as
some of his work is there always seems to be playfulness to
it. In this way it is no surprise that the work of Tim Burton
is one of his big influences.
In addition to Burton’s work and the work of other illustrators, Lonnie says a little bit of everything is what inspires
him.
“To be a designer you must always be looking everywhere.
We are like a video camera that records every image that
passes in front of our eyes, and in the creative process we
recycle it.”

ande vive en un mundo lleno de sueños, amor y hermosura; un fantástico lugar lleno de color y magia. De
pequeña, solía despertarse muy temprano, antes del amanecer e ir a su jardín. Ahí ella empezaba a dibujar y colorear,
maravillándose con la manera en que los colores cambiaban
con los primeros rayos del sol.
Nacida en una familia llena de talento artístico, su abuelo fue
pintor, y su mamá, Norma Elena Gadea, es una de las cantautoras más reconocidas y querida por el pueblo nicaragüense,
ayudó a desarrollar y despertar en Cande, su imaginación
desde muy temprana edad.

a fantastical world filled with color and magic. As a little girl she would wake up early in the morning before the
sunrise to go outside to her garden.There she would begin to
paint and draw with crayons, marveling at the way the colors would appear to change as the sun’s rays began to shine.
Being raised in a family full of artistic talents, her grandfather was a painter and her mother, Norma Elena Gadea, is
one of Nicaragua’s most recognized and loved singer-songwriters, helped Cande develop and awaken her imagination
as a young girl.

Now in her early 20’s, Cande, or Maria Candelaria,
continues to share her unique world through her
art, designs, and photography. A self-described mediator of feelings, her style has a propensity to be
retro, vintage, and full of color.
Cande creates without limits. Photography, collage,
painting and drawing are all parts of her artistic
repertoire. She is constantly experimenting with
different combinations of techniques, media, and
tools. Her fascination with vintage Polaroid cameras is apparent in much of her work, both as a photographic tool and as an object in her compositions.
While art is her true passion, she also takes on
commercial photography and design jobs, including work with the popular Nicaraguan band Malos
Hábitos. No matter what she is creating, it is important to Cande to feel a personal connection with
the designs she crafts. Through her art, she strives
to transmit her emotions, memories and feelings,
and provide us with a different way to see life; a way
where fantasy is the beginning of everything.

unque me parece interesante que las más de
360 mini islas que adornen el Lago Cocibolca
hayan nacido como resultado de la erupción del
volcán Mombacho hace más de diez mil años, existe
una mejor razón por la cual adentrarse a este
precioso laberinto acuático y tomar un relajante
paseo en lancha: ¡Monos!
¿Y qué es lo único que puede superar a un mono?
¡Una isleta con varios monos! Puedes programar
un paseo por las isletas a través de una agencia
turística en Granada o gastar menos y contratar a
un guía personal que te las muestre a plenitud. Eso
sí, asegurate de mencionarle que quieres pasar por
la isleta de los Monos.
Otros atractivos turísticos incluyen una abundante
variedad de aves y plantas, la famosa fortaleza
de San Pablo – construido en el siglo XVIII para
proteger a Granada – y una variedad de restaurantes
y hoteles en los que sirven el tradicional pescado
Guapote y demás platos típicos.
Un paseo en lancha de dos horas usualmente
incluye un alto en el camino para almorzar. Este
recorrido es una manera entretenida de pasar la
tarde, además la belleza única de Las Isletas de
Granada es algo que todos deberían experimentar.

hile I suppose it is kind of interesting that
the more than 360 tiny islands in Lake
Cocibolca that make up Las Isletas de Granada
were formed when the volcano Mombacho
erupted over 10,000 years ago, there is an even
better reason to take a relaxing boat trip through
this beautiful aquatic labyrinth: Monkeys!
And what is the only thing better than one
monkey? That’s right, a tiny island of monkeys!!
You can book a ride through the Isletas with a
tour company in Granada or save money and hire
a guide yourself by heading to the south end of
the lakefront. Just make sure to mention that you
want to pass by ‘La Isla de los Monos.’
Other tour highlights include an abundance of
bird and plant life, the fortress of San Pablo –
built to protect Granada from pirates in the 18th
century – and a handful of restaurants and hotels
serving fresh fish and traditional dishes.
A two-hour leisurely boat trip, usually including
a stop for lunch, is an enjoyable way to spend
an afternoon, and the unique beauty of Las
Isletas de Granada is something everyone should
experience. Don’t forget to bring along some fruit
for the monkeys.

Bluefields se encuentra rodeado de guardas portando
armas automáticas, mientras el alcaide esta armado con
una cámara digital. El prisionero Clifton Bent se abre
camino en medio de la multitud de reos hasta el final de
la cancha de baloncesto donde la banda, The Mighty Blue,
ha colocado sus instrumentos. Con su gorro de Spiderman
hasta sus cejas, susurra algo al oído del tecladista, el
mensaje se difunde rápidamente a los demás miembros de
la banda. Clifton toma el micrófono y a la vez el control de
la música; la audiencia responde con emoción.

ecember 23, 2008. The rec yard of the Bluefields
Jailhouse is surrounded by guards armed with
automatic weapons and a warden armed with a digital
camera. Inmate Clifton Bent makes his way through
the crowd of prisoners to the edge of the basketball
court where the band, The Mighty Blue, has set up their
instruments. Spiderman beanie pulled low, he whispers
something in the ear of the keyboard player, who quickly
relays it to the rest of the band. A soca rhythm begins to
play. Clifton grabs the mic and starts swaying with the
music.The crowd reciprocates with cheers.

Media hora antes, Clifton estaba encerrado en una celda, no
era más que otro rostro en medio de las docenas de reos que
se encuentran en la penitenciaría. Ahora, frente a sus compañeros de cárcel, con los guardas observando, micrófono en
mano, el es Clifton Bent alias ‘Sexy’, uno de los cantantes de
reggae más talentosos y carismáticos de Bluefields haciendo
lo que mejor sabe hacer, cantar.
Alexander Scott, cofundador de Bluefields Sound System
(BSS), un grupo de músicos y cantantes originarios de la
zona, conoció a Sexy en el 2005 por casualidad cuando visitó el centro penitenciario para obtener el permiso para un
concierto que quería promover allí. El jefe de la Policía había
escuchado de BSS y de su trabajo representando y promoviendo la música de Bluefields. El decidió otorgar el permiso
poniendo como única condición que Alexander escuchara a
un interno que era conocido por ser un buen cantante de reggae.
Por años Sexy ha entrado y salido de la cárcel como consecuencia de su lucha contra el demonio de la drogadicción.
Sexy cantó para Alexander allí mismo, en la cárcel. Este
quedó sumamente sorprendido con lo que escuchó, tanto así
que inmediatamente llamó a su socio, Edwin Sánchez, quien
se encontraba en medio de una producción de video, para
que se trasladara inmediatamente a la cárcel. Edwin llegó
con un equipo de grabación de audio y armaron una sesión
para Sexy ese mismo día.
Desde entonces, Sexy se convirtió en un artista oficial de
Bluefields Sound System. Su estilo y voz única se entremezcla maravillosamente con las raíces de reggae de la banda;
sin embargo, se destaca del grupo. En esa ocasión Sexy fue
otorgado un permiso temporal que permitiría presentarse
en la Bluefields Indian and Caribbean University junto a
los miembros de BSS. Durante la presentación fue escoltado
paso a paso por la policía.

de aproximadamente 250 canciones que presume tener acumuladas en su cabeza. La audiencia lo ama, pero la sonrisa de
Sexy señala que el ama lo que hace aún más.
De repente, una de las chicas que forma parte del sello BSS
se une al escenario y se mueve sensualmente al ritmo con
Sexy. El público ruge como señal de aprobación del dúo. El
expresa una leve sonrisa y sigue en lo suyo. Después de todo,
no lo llaman Sexy por nada.
Half an hour earlier, Clifton had been locked in a cell; just
another face mixed in with dozens of other prisoners. Now, in
front of his fellow inmates, guards looking on, mic in hand, he
is Clifton Bent aka ‘Sexy,’ one of Bluefields hardest-hitting
reggae singers doing what he loves, performing his music.
Alexander Scott, the co-founder of the Bluefields Sound System (BSS), a collective of Bluefields musicians and singers,
was introduced to Sexy in 2005 when he went to the jailhouse to secure a permit for a concert.The Police Chief was
familiar with BSS and their preservation and promotion of
the music of Bluefields. He agreed to sign off on the permit,
his only request being that Alexander meet an inmate who
had a reputation as a talented reggae singer.
For years Sexy has been in and out of prison, a result of his
everyday struggle with the demon of drug addiction. He
performed for Alexander that day in the jail.Thoroughly impressed, he dialed up his business partner, Edwin Sanchez,
who was busy with preproduction on a music video, and
told him to drop everything and get to the jailhouse. Edwin
showed up with some audio equipment and they put together a rough recording of Sexy that very day.
Since then, although he has remained incarcerated, Sexy has
been an official Bluefields Sound System artist. His style
and unique voice blend well with the group’s reggae roots,
yet are distinct enough to set him apart. Sexy was granted
temporary release to perform at a Bluefields university with
the rest of the BSS crew. He arrived and left escorted by police.
December 23, 2008 is different. This time the concert has
come to him. The whole Bluefields Sound System is at the
jailhouse for a special Christmas performance and to pass
out donations of soap, toothpaste, and toilet paper. Inmates
from both the penitentiary and the short-term jail fill the
rec yard. Yellow caution tape and a stern warning are the
only things separating the two sides from each other and
the concert. All the artists, including Kali Boom, Sabu, and
Kila B, are well received, but it is without a doubt Sexy’s day.
He performs three of an estimated 250 songs he says he has
stashed up in his head. The audience loves it, but Sexy’s smile
shows he loves it even more.
At one point he is joined onstage by a girl from the BSS crew
who wines with him seductively as he sings. The crowd roars
with approval.The performer grins slyly and keeps on grooving. After all, they don’t call him‘Sexy’ for nothing.

No se puede hablar de música en Nicaragua sin mencionar
a uno de los que más bulla hace en esta escena:Augusto Mejía, reconocido por ser un artista talentoso, carismático y
versátil.
El 27 de Diciembre del 2008,Augusto fue ingresado en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos de un hospital de Managua tras
presentar síntomas de apendicitis. Días después, luego de
varias cirugías y complicaciones no previstas su condición
se estabilizó y fue trasladado a una sala de recuperación normal. El proceso lo debilitó dejándolo sin poder hacer nada
más que tocar música.
El 16 de Enero de 2009, una alineación ecléctica compuesta
por bandas, músicos, DJ’s y artistas se reunieron para brindar un concierto benéfico para Augusto.Tuvo como lema“un
concierto de amigos para un amigo”.Todos los fondos recaudados se destinaron para ayudar a cubrir sus gastos médicos.
El evento incluso se tituló Auwoostock, un nombre perfectamente compuesto en alusión al festival musical Woodstock
de 1969 y por supuesto al homenajeado. Augusto no pudo
participar ya que aún estaba internado en el hospital, sin
embargo el evento fue trasmitido en vivo vía internet para
que él pudiera verlo.

Durante el concierto se presentó un video en el que agradecía a los organizadores, bandas, artistas y asistentes por
su apoyo.
El concierto atrajo a más de 300 personas, sobrepasando la
capacidad de Fussion y aunque esto ocasionó un poco de
embotellamiento y calor a nadie le molestó. Estaban allí por
una buena causa y disfrutaron de una gran variedad de artistas, así que todo valió la pena.
Se espera que Augusto tenga se recupere pronto y HECHO
quisiera desearle lo mejor y esperamos verlo pronto en la escena.
Through the course of putting this issue of HECHO together we came to fully recognize what many have known for
some time:Augusto Mejia is one of the most prolific, talented
and charismatic artists making music in Nicaragua.
December 27th, 2008.Augusto was admitted to the Intensive
Care Unit of a Managua hospital after he presented symptoms of appendicitis. Days later, after several surgeries and
some unforeseen complications, he was in stable condition
and had been moved to a regular room for recovery.The progression had left him weak and in need of several months of
recovery time.
January 16th, 2009. An eclectic lineup of some of Nicaragua’s biggest bands, musicians, DJ’s and performance artists
came together to put on a benefit concert for Augusto. It was
billed as“a concert of friends, for a friend.”All proceeds went
to his hospital and recovery costs.The event was dubbed Auwoostock, a nod to the historic Woodstock music festival of
1969. Augusto was unable to attend in person, however the
concert was filmed and streamed live over the internet for
him to watch.
The show drew more than 300 people, pushing the capacity
of Bar Fussion to the limit.The venue was hot and crowded,
but no one seemed to mind. It was for a good cause, and the
rare opportunity to see such a variety of bands in one place
made everything worth it.
Augusto is expected to make a full recovery and HECHO
would like to wish him the best as we look forward to seeing
him back on the grind.

‘Push me/And then just touch me/Till I can get my satisfaction…’
Sinceramente, lo único que me daría verdadera satisfacción
es no tener que volver a escuchar esa canción… pero ni modo.
En un muy encendido sábado por la noche, una multitud de
jóvenes desinhibidos dispuestos a bailar llenaron la Alianza
Francesa.Toques de música electrónica y efectos visuales estaban en pleno apogeo, pero fueron los tragos de 15 pesos los
que me motivaron a mover los pies.
La Alianza Francesa fue el lugar perfecto para que DJ Linox
y DJ Lola encendieran el fuego en la gente. House, electro
y trance sonaban por los parlantes. Para cuando Revuelta
Sonora tomó el control de la mesa giratoria para finalizar
el set, la gente estaba súper encendida, lista para que él los
terminara.
Les dio justamente lo que querían, usando su magia de DJ,
enloqueciendo la pista de baile, llevándolos al borde del clímax. Pero el final era inevitable, las luces de la Alianza dieron
el aviso, la música se detuvo y era hora de irse.A la una de la
mañana y con ganas de más la gente se fue a como los franceses llaman‘sur la cane’.

Honestly, the only thing that would truly satisfy me would
be to never hear that song again…but I digress…
On a Saturday night that was live, a youthful Managua crowd
of uninhibited ass-shakers filled the Alianza Francesa. Electronic thump and spaced-out visuals were in full effect, but
it was the 15 cord drinks that got my feet moving first.
The Alianza’s open-air courtyard kept things cool as DJ
Linox and DJ Lola supplied the fire. House, electro, and
trance blew through the speakers like a backdraft. By the
time Revuelta Sonora took his place behind the 1’s and 2’s
for his final set, the crowd had been sufficiently turned on
and it was up to him to finish them off.
He gave it to ‘em just how they liked it, using a DJ’s touch,
working the dancefloor into a frenzy, pushing them to the
edge of climax. But just when it looked like a happy ending
was inevitable, the music stopped, the lights came up, and it
was time to get out. Barely 1 o’clock, and craving more, the
crowd was left, as the French say,‘sur la cane.’

El volante promocional prometía que si nosotros no íbamos
a Bluefields, Bluefields llegaría a nosotros. Cumplieron su
palabra. Ese sábado, la clase estaba presente con la Escuela
de Reggae manteniendo su ritmo y sabor en Bar
Fussion. Bluefields Sound System llegó con una presentación llena de músicos veteranos y jóvenes artistas en desarrollo, ofreciéndonos una mezcla de raíces de reggae y bailes
candentes.
Papa Bantam, Kali Boom, Mad Angels y ‘The Nicaraguan
Man’, Kila B, representaron la generación joven, pero quien
se lució fue el Profesor Sabu, alias ‘El Hombre Gato’. En
su primera visita a Managua desde 1980, con sus 65 años
cumplidos, se presento con la energía de un gatito, mostrando sus patadas salvajes y movimientos de bailes que harían
morir de celos al conocido artista Michael Jackson.

Después de que todos terminaron su presentación, el grupo
de apertura,The Mighty Blue, regresó al escenario y comenzó una sesión de ritmos improvisados a los cuales se unieron

The flyer promised that if you weren’t going to Bluefields,
Bluefields was coming to you.Word is bond. On this Saturday
night, class was most definitely in session with the School
of Reggae holding it down at Bar Fussion. The Bluefields
Sound System came correct with a lineup of heavy-hitting
veteran musicians and young stars on the rise, providing a
hot blend of roots reggae and dancehall fire.
Papa Bantam, Kali Boom, Mad Angels and‘The Nicaraguan
Man’ himself, Kila B, represented for the younger generation, but the star of the show had to be Profesór Sabu aka‘El
Hombre Gato’. In his first visit to Managua since the 1980’s,
the 65-year-old performed with the energy of a gatito; showing off his wild leg kicks and dance moves that would make
the artist formerly known as Michael Jackson jealous.
After everyone completed their sets, the backing band,‘The
Mighty Blue,’ returned to the stage and laid the foundation
for a good old fashioned jam session, where the leaders of the
old school combined with the leaders of the new to show that
it really is‘One Love.’

Acompañado de la música en vivo de Momotombo, el artista
Dirían comenzó su propio espectáculo. Usando la música y el
momento como principal fuente de inspiración, él comenzó
su travesía sin saber hasta dónde lo llevaría. Mientras la banda tocaba, él pintaba, usando una gran pared blanca detrás
del escenario como lienzo.
El arte en vivo está lleno de preguntas y anticipación:
‘¿Por qué lo hace?’‘Se ve pijudo’.‘¿Qué se supone que es eso?’
‘No lo entiendo’.
Hay muchas razones por la cual artistas se rehúsan a mostrar
sus obras antes de terminarlas. Fue muy refrescante tener la
oportunidad de ver a un artista mientras este experimentaba, cambiaba de idea y revisaba su perspectiva frente al
público.Tuve la sensación de que Dirían movía su brocha al
ritmo del funk de Momotombo. El resultado final de la colaboración ahora forma parte permanente de Fussion Bar…
al menos hasta que el artista decida hacerlo otra vez.

Accompanied by live grooves from the band Momotombo,
Dirian began his performance. Using the music and the moment as his inspiration, the artist began his journey, unsure
where it would lead him.As the band played, he painted, using a large wall behind the stage as his canvas.
Live art is filled with questions and anticipation:
‘Why is he doing that?’‘That looks cool.’‘What is that supposed to be?’‘I don’t get it.’
There are many reasons artists refuse to let you see their
work before it is complete. It was refreshing then to have the
opportunity to watch an artist as he experimented, tried
things, changed his mind, and revised his vision in front of
a crowd. I got the sense that Dirian was truly moving his
brush to the Momotombo funk. The final result of the collaboration can still be seen in Bar Fussion, and it should remain there, unless of course Dirian and the band decide to
collaborate on a remix.

El Punk Rock es ruidoso y cuando estás en The Reef a unos
metros de Q69K, ¡es mucho máaaaas ruidoso!
La banda lleva más de tres años. Los “dos nicas y el gringo’
son Mauricio Conrado, alias Cueriux, miembro fundador y
batero, Ervin Costa bajista y vocalista y Jason Thompson en
la guitarra. Cada uno tiene una preferencia musical distinta,
lo que hace que todos aporten algo al estilo ‘experimental
punk’ de QK.
Aunque no oía ni mis pensamientos, la oportunidad de tener
a la banda de frente, tan cerca y personal, fue excelente. La
adrenalina fluía, mi cabeza se movía al ritmo de la batería y
el sonido entraba a mi oído tan fuerte que lo sentí sangrar.
El álbum debut de Q69K, Esclavos de la Aceleración, estará
a la venta pronto y así tendrás la oportunidad de destruir
tus oídos en tu hogar.

Punk Rock music is loud.And when you’re in The Reef just a
couple meters away from Managua’s lords of punk, Q69K…

The current incarnation of Q69k has been playing together for about three years. The self-described “2 Nicas and a
gringo,” include founding member Mauricio Conrado, aka
Cueriux, on drums, Erwin Costa on the bass, and Jason
Thompson on guitar. Each musician brings a different musical background to the group’s‘experimental punk’ sound.
Though I couldn’t hear my own thoughts at the concert, having the opportunity to know the band up close and personal
(not in the biblical sense) was a heart-pumping experience.
The adrenaline was flowing and my head was banging, even
as my ears felt like they were bleeding.
Q69k’s debut album, Esclavos de la Aceleravción, will be out
soon, giving you additional opportunities to destroy your
hearing in the comfort of your own home.
