The Ignatian Corner!
IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY
CONFERENCE – 2
SILENT GOD IN A WORLDLY WORLD:
The Value of Silence in Ignatian Experience
[Note: The Keynote Address on July 17, 2015 at
the IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY CONFERENCE was
delivered by Fr. Jose Garcia de Castro, S.J. (Vice
President of the University of Comillas in Madrid, Spain.
He is also an inspiring lecturer at the Ignatian Immersion
Course (which I recommend most highly). With his
permission, I present my notes on his address. Fr.
Dominic)
In Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam, silence is very
important. Among us Christians this is not so strong.
Before the creation there was a proto-silence. Ignatius’
greatest consolation was to gaze at the stars, which he did
often and for a long time. John of the Cross (in A V 2,21)
adds: “God always speaks in eternal silence.”
For Ignatius, the cannonball led to his prolonged
silence. Noise provoked more noise in this absence of
worlds, Ignatius was not silent but mute. He asked for
books of worldly noise. His sister-in-law, Magdalena, only
had the V ita Christi (the Life of Christ) by Rudolph of
Saxony and the Flos Sanctorum (short lives of the saints).
Seek silence and escape the hustle and bustle if you want
to unite yourself with God. Ignatius wanted to be a monk
with its aesthetic silence. Consolation is the daughter of
silence. There is noise of fasting, discipline, temptations,
scruples, but God also remains within them. Ignatius read
Kempis, Imitation of Christ, especially III, 45, 5, and
loved the spirituality of this book. In the Deliberation of
the First Fathers [of the Society of Jesus in 1539], they
discerned in silent prayer, and then in the evening spoke
the fruit of the prayer. Ignatius was sensitive to silence,
especially since he was in mystical prayer. Ignatius and
the first Jesuits were close to Carthusians, but the first
Jesuit moved away from this ascetical life to be apostolic,
Father Baltasar Alvarez, S.J [the spiritual director of St.
Teresa of Avila] stated: “My prayer is to remain in His
presence. Being quiet and silent in His presence is a great
treasure. But Father Mercurian [the Superior General]
asked him to teach only the prayers of the Spiritual
Exercises. “The good spirit comes into the soul in silence,
like one who goes into his own house when the door is
open.” [Sp. Ex. 335.6] Jesuits in the first Directories
[Directories were handbooks on how to give the Spiritual
Exercises; there were 45 or 46 of them.) make a point
about silence, e.g. a secluded place. John of the Cross
stated: “conquering the tongue is better than fasting on
bread and water” (AV .512) The action of the Spirit leads
the retreatant to silence.
Do we have to silence our thoughts? For Ignatius,
thoughts can be a way for God to reveal His way to us.
[Sp. Ex. #20] John of the Cross stated: “the words of
wisdom are heard in silence.” (Divine Flame 3. 67) If we
ask God, God will answer us. But we must dispose
ourselves to listen to God. As spiritual directors we are
called to help the retreatant to pronounce the most suitable
word related to his/her inner experience. We need words
to understand our experience. I become whatever I am
able to speak in the presence of Mystery. Words will
become less in number and deeper in meaning. The
experience of the retreatant leads through the three Weeks
[of the Sp. Ex.] to the silence in the presence of Mystery.
We are on a pilgrimage toward mystery. The call of
language is to gradually die and give a new way to a new
communicative culture with the creator. Our Lord speaks
by opening the soul up, that is, by speaking inside it,
without the din of words, lifting up the soul. [Ignatius:
Letter to Teresa de Rejadella] In a letter to Jesuits Fr.
Nicolas wrote: “This place is already given. It is the
untouchable, unreachable, infinite, and eternal dimension
of our soul. It is the face of our likeness of God where
only the Holy Spirit dwells.”
Silence is a dramatic setting. Silence becomes the
home of creation, of love. [Cf. Sp. Ex. #233 grace of the
4th week and Sp. Ex. #15: The Creator deals directly with
the creature.] The first Jesuits noted that “our ministries
are our ways to transmit the word of God to us. God
silently kisses the world through our works.” [Cf. Sp Ex.
First prenote #231.]
Conclusion: the Ignatian mystical experience is a
progressive integration in a single energy nucleus of three
deeply human and divine dimensions: love (from the
Father), action (from the Son), and silence (from the
Spirit).
2015 Eucharistic Congress - September 11th & 12th, 2015
What are you doing next Saturday? The Eucharistic Congress is a great event for families with
plenty of activities for children and adults. This is a free event. Friday and Saturday, September 11 and
12 at the Charlotte Convention Center.
Sign - up sheets are available in the narthex for parishioners who wish to avail themselves of the
convenience provided by St. Therèse Church to be chauffeured to the Eucharistic Congress. This service
is highly recommended by the many who took advantage of this opportunity during previous Eucharistic
Congresses. Prevent parking lot headaches, avoid traffic nightmares and enjoy the camaraderie of parishioners during
this annual fest! Cost of the bus is $8.00/person; $10/couple; $15/family.

Encouragement for Women Who Have
Moved
Beginning Wednesday, September 16th, we will offer
to all women a ten week Just Moved – Newcomers’
class which will provide encouragement for women
going through the transition and adjustment of moving.
Based on the book A fter the Boxes are Unpacked, this
is an opportunity to meet others, exchange insights, and
find the courage to put down roots all over again.
Whether you stay at home, work outside the home, are
single, married or retired, the stress of moving can
overcome you at times. Make some time for yourself
to share and to be assured by new friends that you will
not feel lost in the shuffle. Sessions meet from 10:00
am to noon. Interested? We will be at a table after
Masses on Sunday, September 13th. For further

Labor Day
This week the United
States celebrates the
worker with Labor Day.
The Catholic Church
has been a long-time
advocate of the worker.
Jesus Christ himself
directed much of his
ministry toward the
common man. Here in
the US, many Catholics
devoted their lives to the
laborers. Father
Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of
Columbus to support the poor working-class
Catholics of New Haven Connecticut and
Dorothy Day was the founder of the Catholic
Worker movement. Both are being
considered for sainthood.

vida vegetativa y sensitiva etc.
esa misma actividad divina.
