Saint John the Evangelist
“The good Lord has given me a father and a
mother more worthy of heaven than of earth!”
... So wrote Saint Therese of the Child Jesus about
her parents, Louie and Zelie (nee Guerin) Martin.
On October 19, 2008 they were beatified by Pope
Benedict XVI, and last Sunday (18), were canonized
by Pope Francis. It was the first time that a married couple were canonized at the same ceremony!
Zelie died at the age of 46 in 1877, while Louis died
at the age of 66, in 1889. Each of their five surviving daughters entered Religious life. Saint Zelie and
Saint Louis, pray for us!
... Halloween is All Hallows (Saints) Eve, and truly
a time for ‘trick or treat’! That’s Saturday (31)!
... In the 8th century Pope Gregory III established
the festival of All Saints on November 1, marking
the end of summer and the onslaught of winter!
That’s next Sunday (1). Family!
... The feast of All Souls, is next Monday (2), in
honor of the faithful departed, dates back to the 2nd
Century. It was accepted in Rome in the 13th century. Associate your deceased loved ones with our
All Souls Mass. It is good to remember!
... Sincere sympathy to Adan Altamirano, part of
our dedicated facility team, on the death of his father, Celso, on Sunday (18). Celso himself served
as part of that team for nearly 20 years, working
with the late Joe Iannuzzi (RIP), until 1999. Celso is
survived by his wife and five children. May he truly
rest in peace.
... Congratulations to Cesar and Susana Varela on
completing their studies for a Licentiate in Religious Studies at the University of Anahuac, Mexico
Sur, sponsored by the Diocese of San Diego. Their
graduation celebration is led by Bishop Gilbert
Chavez this Monday (26), at the Pastoral Center.
... The Open House for Saint Augustine High
School (www.sahs.org and 619 282-2184) is this
coming Sunday (1), from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.
... To date, 138 families have generously contributed $16,807.50 in our Mission Sunday (11) appeal
by Father Joseph Mwongela, in support of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and our missionaries, and their work in 1150 dioceses throughout the world. Mighty!
... Contributions last weekend (18) amounted to
$14,141.00 with 342 families using parish envelopes. A further $5,505.86 was contributed online
by 124 families!
October 25, 2015
... We are looking forward to welcoming our new
bishop, Robert W. McElroy, on a pastoral visit to
Saint John on Wednesday, November 4. He is anxious to gather and meet separately with clergy,
Ministry Staff, School Staff and parish leadership!
Invitations have been mailed to the leaders of our
various organizations!
... We welcome Bob Hahn this week (25), our Bulletin Company (Paluch) Representative, to remind
us of what they make possible for us and to encourage us to patronize our bulletin advertisers. Bob is
available at the Gazebo after Mass!
... Our Saint John School ‘Parents in Prayer’
group meets each Wednesday after the 8:00am
Mass. So, this Wednesday (28), be sure to ‘Park
and Pray’! All are welcome!
... A special ‘Thank You’ to Janice and Tom Echols
who for the past 3 years have managed our Emergency Food Assistance Program, which helps feed
60 - 70 local families each month. Janice and Tom
conclude their ministry in January! Thank you!
... Our prayers are with Father Sharbel Ewen
O.S.B. as he celebrates the Rite of Blessing this
Thursday (29) as Abbot of the Prince of Peace Abbey, Oceanside. The ceremony will be led by
Bishop Robert McElroy.
... Our Knights of Columbus will be with us this
coming Sunday (1) to seek our support for their annual ‘Tootsie-Roll Drive’, which funds organizations which assist those with cognitive challenges.
... Do you know that we are streaming live to the
Internet the Sunday 9:00am Mass each week? Go
to www.saintjohnlive.com
... Congratulations to Norman (Chick) and Barbara
Dorion on celebrating their 71st Wedding Anniversary this Tuesday (27)! They are blessed with 3
children, 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
They are ever with us! Mighty!
... Belated congratulations to Pete and Colleen
Bethea on their 34th Wedding anniversary on Saturday (17). They were married here at Saint John
by Father Barry Vineyard. Ever with us!
... Father Ben participated last week with more
than 20 priests in an Orientation Workshop for
International Priests, in Orange, as they begin their
pastoral ministry in Southern California.
... Remember, this coming Sunday (1), clocks ‘fall
back’ an hour!
… “Don’t look back, you’re not going that way!”

FALL BACK 2:00am
Sunday ( 1 )
In the tangled but fascinating history of penance in
the Church, the Irish “tariff” system helped us survive the
collapse of the old system of public canonical penance and
prepared the way for a new system that emerged in the
twelfth century. The old form was unrepeatable, public,
dealt with serious community matters, and regulated by the
bishops as chief reconcilers. The new form had a more
intimate setting of penitent and confessor, was extremely
repeatable, and applied to everyone. The old canonical
form was closed to children, who were hardly capable of
the very grown‑up sins listed, or their demanding remedies. The old form was likewise closed to clerics, who
were protected in a sense by the very nature of the
discipline.
In the new Irish form the penitent directly named sins,
or answered direct questions by the priest. Sometimes, the
penitent would recite a long formula accusing him- or herself in a general way of all sorts of sins, even from the distant past. Next, priest and penitent together would lie prostrate before the altar and recite several of the psalms with
penitential themes. Finally, the priest would pronounce a
judgment, deciding what form and duration the penance
should take, normally insisting that the person return for
reconciliation once the penances were completed.

VERDADERA CEGUERA
