Mr. King I too, have a dream As many of us recalled the movement and much that went with it. We are reminded of many horrible things that occurred doing that period. I must admit, perhaps I was trying to forget, trying to forget that those individuals I saw on the screen were real people with real feelings. It is easy to fall into a false sense that all is well. It is the little things that we tend to overlook, the little things that are real. Ever notice how men of color are not as free to have a discussion with a Caucasian woman, like any other male. All one has to do, is experience that look, that says, “How dare you speak to me as if we were equal” on occasion that is followed by cries of sexism. I have a dream also, and it is enhanced from some of today’s nuances, such as XM radio. I, as a Colorado native tend to listen to country music as well as others. I enjoy it more when I hear Bobby Flores, Justin Trevino and of course Johnny Rodrigues and I know that for most listeners they don’t care if they are from Texas or Tejas. There is an interesting channel on XM, it is part of the Spanish channels and they claim to play oldies, what a surprise when one hears, Julio Iglesias, Camilo Sesto, Rafael, Armando Manzanero mixed with the Beatles, Barry White, Matt Monroe and others. Gov Richardson of New Mexico was asked recently about how political candidates communicate with Hispanics. “They need to start talking to Hispanics” he said” not like an ethnic minority, but as main stream America who are part of the American Dream” Some of us learned in Vietnam that on certain occasions, one didn’t care if the medic was black, or spoke with an accent. The important thing was we all had the same uniform and the same purpose. Next time you are at a city or county gathering, is 20 percent of that crowd minority? Why not? Yes, I too have a dream. 24 de enero - 31 de enero 2008 Page 3 Noticias Locales Local News College-Bound Students Can Get Help Filling Out Federal Financial Aid Form High school seniors planning to attend college as well as current college students will have an opportunity to get assistance in filling out their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. On Sunday, Feb. 10, financial aid experts will be on hand to provide free help to students from 2 to 4 p.m. at Pueblo Central High School. Filling out the FAFSA form is the critical first step for students who plan to pay for college with the help of grants, scholarships, student employment and student loans. It is used by the U.S. Department of Education to determine a student’s “need analysis” based on financial information such as household income, assets and other data. Ron Swartwood, Financial Aid Director at Pueblo Community College, said College Goal Sunday is a great vehicle for students to get their FAFSA forms processed early. “The whole idea behind FAFSA is to have students get all their paperwork done ahead of time so they don’t run into problems later,” Swartwood pointed out. “If you have never applied for financial aid, you might be missing out on a wonderful opportunity designed to help you achieve your education goals.” In order to complete the FAFSA form at College Goal Sunday, students and their parents should bring the following items with them: • 2007 federal income tax records • Social Security number • Driver’s license • 2007 W-2 forms and other records of income earned • 2007 untaxed income records - Social Security, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, welfare, or veterans benefits records • 2007 bank statements • 2007 business and investment information, if any • Alien registration card if you are not a U.S. citizen Students and their parents are invited to attend the event in the Central High School library. The school is located at 216 E. Orman Ave., and those attending should enter through the main doors, where volunteers will direct them to the library. A total of $15,000 in scholarships will be given away in $1,000 amounts for use at one of 15 colleges in Colorado. Applicant income cannot exceed 185 percent of the federal poverty index, which equals a maximum income of $3,184 per month before taxes for a household of four people. The anticipated average LEAP benefit for 2007-2008 is approximately $316 per family. “During these freezing winter days everyone should have the heat they need to stay warm in their home,” said Scott Barnette, LEAP Director. “We know there are over 200,000 people in our state that meet our income requirements, so the need is out there and this increase in funding ensures that all eligible Coloradans can receive the gift of warmth.” Other benefits provided to LEAP eligible households are the Crisis Intervention Program, which assists with the repair or replacement of the home’s primary heating system such as a furnace or wood-burning stove and the Pueblo Health Expo Cont. from page 1 County Health Department. “It also will be a lot of fun.” According to Dehn, dozens of businesses and communitybased organizations have collaborated to ensure that the Pueblo Health Expo has something to offer everyone. “The Expo planning committee and sponsors care about the health of the Pueblo community,” she says. “And we want residents to know that eating better and moving more doesn’t have to be drudgery. A package of studies released today by the nonpartisan Urban Institute has found that SBA programs are more effective than conventional loans in reaching minorities, women and start-ups, and that SBA loans are a key financing tool for creditworthy small businesses that nevertheless do not meet conventional underwriting standards. In its most recent fiscal year, nearly a third (32.1 percent) of all SBA-backed loans went to start-up businesses, a third (33.6 percent) went to minority borrowers and 22.3 percent went to women. Overall, loans to businesses in underserved areas – including designated Enterprise Zones, HUBZones and Low and Moderate Income areas – represented more than 36 percent of total loan approvals. The study also found that during the period studied – 2001-2004 – 18.8 percent of firms that received a conventional small business loan with a term greater than one year got an SBA-backed loan. When firms that received loans of shorter maturities are included, the percentage is 11.6 percent. The Urban Institute also found that for variable rate loans, borrowers who received SBA-backed loans were willing to pay higher interest rates than borrowers of conventional loans in order to secure commercial credit. The studies were commissioned by SBA three years ago to study the agency’s lending effectiveness and its value to underserved communities. These studies are necessary to establish an initial baseline for evaluating the outcomes achieved through SBA lending. The studies analyzed the 7(a) Loan Guaranty Program, the Certified Development Company (CDC) 504 Loan Program, the Small Business Investment Company (SBIC) interprises.biz Web Hosting 16 20 Años 99 Felicidades Hispania News por sus 2500 MB Space 40 GB Transfer Free Web Builder 100 Email Accounts 24/7 Email & Phone Support $5 DOMAIN REGISTRATION!!! month Debentures Program, and the MicroLoan Program to help SBA assess past performance and test methodologies for setting meaningful targets for future accomplishments. “These reports validate our essential role in getting capital to underserved communities and our success in doing so,” said SBA Administrator Steve Preston. “They also support the recent initiatives we have rolled out to enable entrepreneurs who are not receiving capital through the conventional market.” The studies found that borrowers who get SBAbacked loans are more likely to be minorities, women and start-up entrepreneurs than those who get conventional loans, and find little overlap between SBA and conventional lending. The Urban Institute also reported that commercial lenders, consistent with program intent, use SBA guarantees to support borrowers who are creditworthy but don’t meet conventional underwriting standards. On the other hand, while the studies found that average sales and employment increased over time for SBAfinanced businesses, researchers were unable to identify any strong, consistent predictors of success. The findings support the conclusion that SBA’s programs are, in fact, supporting small businesses that cannot obtain “credit elsewhere.” Among the specific findings were: ·7(a) and 504 guaranteed loans were more likely to be made to women or minority-owned businesses and start-ups than conventional small business loans. ·7(a) and 504 guaranteed loans are, on average, made to small businesses with fewer employees and lower annual sales revenue than conventional small business loans. ·7(a) and 504 guaranteed loans have longer average maturity terms than conventional loans. ·For variable rate loans, SBA’s guaranteed borrowers pay a higher average interest rate than conventional borrowers, indicating that they were not able to find financing at a lower rate elsewhere. Page 8 24 de enero - 31 de enero 2008 Entretenimiento Entertainment Miss Nelson Has A Field Day Join Imagination Celebration for the Super Bowl of family fun as we present “Miss Nelson Has A Field Day” at the Pikes Peak Center on Friday, February 8th at 7pm. This rollicking 60-minute musical performance is produced by the Omaha Theater Company for Young People and based on the popular “Miss Nelson” book series authored by Harry G. Allard and illustrated by James Marshall. It is recommended for children ages 4 to 12, but anyone who has ever been on a losing team will be able to relate to this humorous and entertaining production. Lobby doors will open at 6pm for kid-friendly hands-on art activities. Adults and children are encouraged to wear their favorite team jerseys and root for the home team! Tickets are $8, $12 and $15. Call 520-SHOW or go to www.ticketswest.com for reserved seating. Miss Nelson, Viola Swamp and the children of Room 207 are at it again in this musical romp of schoolhouse humor. As the action begins, it soon becomes apparent that all is not well at Horace B. Smedley Middle School. School spirit is suffering as the school’s football team, the Tornadoes, gets ready to face their #1 rival. Unfortunately, the team has been losing all season, and it doesn’t look good for the big game. It’s up to Miss Nelson to call in her secret weapon – the dreaded substitute teacher Viola Swamp – to whip the team into shape. Joan Cushing adapted the script, music and lyrics for the stage version of “Miss Nelson Has A Field Day”, one of the country’s leading playwrights. The Omaha Theater Company, one of the nation’s premiere touring companies for children’s theater, was one of the first theatrical companies to produce Cushing’s work for young audiences with its production of “Miss Nelson is Missing.” Wells Fargo, the Pikes Peak Community Foundation, NewsFirst 5/30 and The Gazette sponsor “Miss Nelson Has A Field Day”. Completely redesigned for 2008 with increased dimensions for a more spacious interior, the sedan styling theme expresses a powerful presence with sharp and strong character lines. The coupe is further individualized with an aggressive stance and unique proportions that create a muscular, sporty demeanor. “The all-new Honda Accord has become more advanced and refined with a new level of engineering sophistication,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “As the Honda brand’s flagship automobile, the Accord is designed to exceed expectations with premium technology, a more spacious interior and increased power, while retaining the fun-todrive character and innovative feel that has always distinguished the Accord.” An available 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine produces 268horsepower - the most ever for any Accord - while introducing a new generation of fuelsaving Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM®) technology and achieving a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV1) rating. The VCM system operates in six-cylinder mode for power and 4- and 3cylinder modes for efficiency, resulting in an EPA city/ highway fuel economy rating of 19/292 miles per gallon (Accord Sedan V-6). Also new for Accord, an Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure enhances frontal collision compatibility with vehicles of different sizes and bumper heights. Additional safety equipment standard to all Accord models includes Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), also known as Electronic Stability Control; side-curtain airbags; dualchamber front side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), active front seat head restraints, anti-lock brakes and more. The Accord is available in sedan and coupe body styles with 2.4-liter 4-cylinder and 3.5-liter V-6 engine choices. Available transmissions include a 5-speed manual (standard with all 4-cylinder engines), a 5-speed automatic (standard on sedan V-6 models, available with all 4cylinder engines and V-6powered Accord Coupes,) and a 6-speed manual transmission (exclusive to the Accord Coupe EX-L V-6 6MT). Sedan trim levels range from the well-equipped Accord Sedan LX and plus-featured LX-P (177-horsepower 4cylinder engine), to the nicelyequipped Accord Sedan EX (190-horsepower 4-cylinder engine or 268-horsepower V-6 engine), to the premium and upscale Accord Sedan EX-L (190-horsepower 4-cylinder engine or 268-horsepower V-6 engine). Coupe trim levels range from the well-equipped Accord Coupe LX-S (190 horsepower 4-cylinder engine), to the nicely-equipped Accord Coupe EX (190- or 268-horsepower V-6 engine). horsepower 4-cylinder engine) Interior to the premium and upscale Premium quality with a Accord Coupe EX-L (190- simple, modern and spacious horsepower 4-cylinder engine Cont. on page 9 Page 10 24 de enero - 31 de enero 2008 Automundo Autoworld 2008 Honda Accord Cont... design describes the philosophy behind the Accord’s interior. The larger Accord Sedan total interior volume of 120.0 cubic feet (+3.3 cubic feet compared to 2007) moves the EPA classification from the midsize sedan class to the large sedan class. The additional space is intended to provide “equal” seating comfort for front and rear passengers. Rear legroom of 37.2 inches (+0.4 inches) approaches the impressive second row legroom of the Honda Pilot SUV (37.4 inches). The wider interior (+1.5 inches) allows the front seats to be positioned farther apart to allow for a wide center console more commonly associated with the finest luxury vehicles. The Accord interior is designed for a dynamic, intuitive and upscale presence, starting with an easy-to-read information display on every vehicle. A zone styling approach separates operation-related instruments (top) and information-related instruments (lower). At night, the controls are further separated by color to distinguish between climate controls (aqua green) and audio controls (white). Classically-styled gauges for the speedometer and tachometer are perfectly round (instead of being truncated at the bottom). Steering wheel audio controls are standard on every Accord. Careful attention was paid to the symmetry of the exterior and interior of the vehicle including sight lines related to the dashboard height and the visual presence of the hood to the driver. Redesigned front bucket seats are larger, and feature substantial lateral support to complement the Accord’s sporting side. The fold-down lockable rear seatback increases cargo-carrying versatility; the sedan includes a lockable pass-through. Three impressive audio systems are available - all with MP3/Windows Media® Audio (WMA) playback capability and an auxiliary input jack. The standard system features 160 watts, a single-disc CD player and six speakers. A Radio Data System (RDS) displays information broadcast by participating radio stations that often includes call letters, station type and programming information. The Accord Sedan EX and Coupe LX-S add a 6-disc in- dash changer. The premium audio system, which comes standard on Accord EX Coupe and Sedan EX-L models, has a six-disc CD changer, 270 watts total amplification and seven speakers including an 8-inch subwoofer. XM® Satellite Radio is standard equipment on all Accord EX-L models. The latest-generation of the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with voice activation (available on EX-L) uses an 8-inch screen and an interface dial for user input. Features include the Zagat and attractions. NavigationSurvey™ guide for equipped models also include restaurants, nightlife, hotels Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®. Exterior Intended to convey a prestigious presence, the Accord Sedan embraces a traditional three-box shape that emphasizes both a dynamic and athletic feel with the sophistication of a timeless sedan form. Dimensionally, the Accord Sedan’s overall length of 194.1 inches (4-cylinder models, V-6 models add 0.2 inches for front spoiler lip) is 3.0 inches longer than the 2007 model. The width of 72.7 inches is 1.1 inches wider, and the height of 58.1 inches is 0.9 inches taller. Even though the size is larger in every dimension, the vehicle’s torsional rigidity has increased by 20 percent as a result of advanced body construction that uses 48 2705 E. Boulder St., Colorado Springs, CO 80909 percent high-tensile steel - the most high-tensile steel by volume of any Accord to date. A significant benefit to the advanced body construction is that total vehicle weight increased only by approximately 5 percent despite the larger size, greater rigidity and added features. The Accord Coupe styling radically breaks from the sedan with a uniquely aggressive image. Dimensionally, the Accord Coupe’s overall length of 190.9 inches is 3.2 inches longer than 2007 model, its width of 72.8 inches is 1.2 inches wider, and its height of 56.4 inches is 0.6 (LX-S) to 0.7 (EX, EX-L) inches higher. Compared to the 2008 Accord Sedan, the Accord Coupe is 3.2 inches shorter in length, 1.7 inches shorter in height and 0.1-inch wider. Chassis A performance-inspired double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension are designed to provide world-class chassis dynamics. The blog www.scholarshipforhispanics.blogspot.com is designed to further encourage young Hispanic students to pursue higher education by connecting them to mentors, advisors and professionals with up-to-the minute dialogues relating to financial aid, high school preparation, college savings advice and professional insight. The blog, which already features a post on how to register to optimize userexperience when navigating through our Scholarship Directory, will bolster content already available at www.scholarshipsforhispanics.com. Also featured on the blog, will be guest columns from national leaders on topics ranging from college entrance preparation to ways to finance higher education. The foundation’s goal with the blog, scholarshipsforhispanics.blogspot.com, is to spread the word about scholarships available to Hispanics and share insight into securing a college education. With the addition of the blog, NHP Foundation hopes to provide a forum to share experiences between college degree holders and those students and families engaged in the pursuit of a higher education. “Each week we will highlight new topics on the directory home page to attract the attention of tens of thousands of unique visitors, mentors, and counselors,” said Eddie The complete Spanish conversational course is available on DVD with accompanying cartoon viewers guide. Echarte, Chairman of Azteca America and Fundación Azteca America. “We’re committed to this effort and excited to be teaming up with the NHP Foundation with this important initiative.” Aside from information on scholarship opportunities, NHP Foundation also offers information to prospective college students on services, organizations, high school preparation, college entrance test preparation, government loans and local scholarships that will help them secure their education. The NHP Foundation facilitates the distribution of this information in detail through its website at www.scholarshipsforhispanics.org. According to Thomas Oliver, NHP Foundation President and CEO, the website attracts tens of thousands of hits and thousands of unique visitors each week. The foundation’s online presence compliments its “Educate” print tabloid and its CD-Rom platforms. In partnership with Fundación Azteca America’s planned public service announcements set to air this spring, the NHP Foundation will add a broadcast platform to drive awareness. Through its partnerships with Chicago’s La Raza Newspaper and Brownsville’s El Periodico USA, the NHP Foundation helped distribute more than 250,000 copies of Educate, the newspaper insert featuring scholarships and college access advice specific to those regions. It is estimated that the Educate inserts reached more than 750,000 Hispanic readers this year in these cities combined. The NHP Foundation, along with Fundación Azteca America and the support of Grupo Salinas’ and Chairman Ricardo B. Salinas, also offers an annual Scholarship Directory on CD-Rom containing clear, up-to-date scholarship information and college entrance advice for today’s growing population of Hispanics headed toward higher education. 24 de enero - 31 de enero 2008 Page 15 DEPORTES Sports The Front Range Orthopaedic 2008 Colorado Springs Metro Wrestling Championships Set For This Weekend At Doherty High School The Front Range Orthopaedics 2008 Colorado Springs Metro Wrestling Championships features the best high school individual and team talent from the metropolitan area.
