Reflection February 1st - St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church
Fr. Norman Schwartz
Reflection February 1st
“He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him” (Mk 1:27).
Christ’s words bring healing and comfort. Through His words, He teaches as
one having authority not to blame or to destroy, but to heal, to console and
to build up the whole human person. The Word of Christ rings not only with
power and authority but with truth. Through the extent of Christ’s words,
powers and authority, the “unclean spirit” within the man comes out of him.
As Christ heals the unclean man whom by far recognizes Christ as “the Holy
One of God,” we, too, somehow may call upon Jesus Christ for either spiritual
or physical healings. The question is, how often do we speak to Him? How is
our relationship with Christ ? From now on, Christ wants to hear from us.
He is our Healer; He is our hope and consolation. Call and talk to Him,
He will surely listen to us.
Fr. Wesler Hilaire

OUR IDENTITY: ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC, APOSTOLIC
It is important to remember the characteristics or qualities about Catholicism that make us unique among the world’s great religions. From the
beginnings of our church in the missionary and church founding activities of the apostles, we have emphasized the unity that unites us. Yes we
exist in all parts of the world and Mass is celebrated in hundreds of different languages but it is also true that we share one Creed, one system
of sacraments, one unified concept of morality and right living and one episcopal understanding of pastoral and spiritual leadership. In reality,
even with the differences of language and culture, Catholics can feel comfortable worshiping in any part of the world.
The word “Catholic” implies universal and reaching out to and including all the different cultures and types of people in the world. What is
true of Catholicism around the world is also true for us living in Southeast Florida. The Diocese of Palm Beach of which Saint Joan of Arc is a
member parish is comprised of five counties, 5,115 square miles, 235,000 Catholics and a total population of two million. Our part of Florida
is very diverse with many languages and cultures and it is a challenge to create “one faith family” from so many. Each parish also has its own
diversity and “personality” but working, praying and evangelizing together we create a unified Catholic footprint in our world. With our Bishop
as the center of our diocesan unity, together as many parishes, we support a school system, Catholic Charities ministries, liturgical and pastoral
resources and a corps of priests and religious women.
Our Catholic identity is essentially a corporate identity, a community of individuals who are journeying together in faith, hope and charity with
common goals and aspirations. We know that no single one of us is alone but a significant member of the Body Of Christ. We share in His
mission and espouse His values. So it is that each year, we join together to support all of the diverse and life giving ministries and activities
that express our solidarity and vision. No single parish can accomplish all that needs to be done, but together we can make a real difference
in the lives of thousands. Just as no man is an island, so no parish is an island unto itself. THE DIOCESAN SERVICES APPEAL is the concrete
vehicle through which we can express our identity, values and most heartfelt commitments.
Please consider how you might be a part of the larger Catholic community of the Palm Beach Diocese. Along with all of the other families of
our Diocese, help us to address human and spiritual needs together and in that way build up the Kingdom of God in our time and place. Your
gift of whatever size will help us solidly build our Church and ministries upon the rock that is Jesus Christ. A final important thought for our
consideration is Saint Paul’s great insight that “God will never be outdone in generosity”.
- Msgr. Michael D. McGraw

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING AT SAINT JOAN OF ARC: OUR SPIRITUAL LIVES?
It is almost impossible to capture the spiritual vitality and energy of our parish’s spiritual life over the past few years. Beginning with our Masses
and other liturgies, it is heartening to see a committed community of some 3,500 worshipers gather every weekend for our Masses. We also have
another hundred or so who attend Mass every day. Thousands of voices are raised in songs of praise and thanksgiving as we weekly “pray twice”
in our congregational singing under the leadership of Doug Byers and our inspiring choirs. We certainly know how to “Make a Joyful Song Unto
The Lord”! Special effort and attentiveness has gone into the welcoming activities of our Ushers, clergy, Music Ministry and Lectors. We have
succeeded, in the opinion of many parishioners and guests, in creating a warm, friendly and hospitable worshiping community. Each Mass that we
begin by greeting and introducing ourselves to our neighbors, helps build up our family of faith. Our goal is to make sure that no one ever feels
like a stranger worshiping with us.
Our Liturgical Ministries of Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, Altar Servers and Ushers provide for the spiritual growth of the participants in these ministries and also give good example and encouragement to the spiritual growth of all. Because the Divine Liturgy is the “Work of
the People”, our enthusiastic, active participation has created worship in our church that is uplifting, nourishing and effective in making our community holier and more active in service and charity. The many different prayer groups, Bible study groups,Family prayers and discussion groups
that exist at Saint Joan of Arc insure that our weekend Masses are high points and expressions of a spirituality that is practiced all week long.
Another indicator of the spiritual vitality of our parish family is the extent to which we extend ourselves in charity and concern toward others.
Within the context of our worship, we are invited regularly to help with worthy causes such as help to the International Missions; Elderly Religious
sisters, priest and brothers; Black and Indian Missions; Holy Land Missions; Propagation of the Faith; Respect Life and many other fruitful Catholic
causes. The weekly offertory collection, in addition, that pays for all of the expenses of our parish is, at its heart, a gift of ourselves to God and
becomes a part of the self-offering of Jesus at every Mass. While often we cannot directly be involved in the multiple needs to which we respond,
we can help indirectly through prayer and charity.
Because our Sunday worship is the “summit and source of our lives”, it also supports us and strengthens us as we live out our faith in our families.
What we celebrate at Mass, we put into practice during the week every time we show compassion, forgive, reach-out to our neighbor and give
good example. The fruits of a mature spiritual life are the Beatitudes, Jesus’ Two-Fold Law of Love, The Gifts and Fruits of The Holy Spirit and the
virtues taught by Jesus. As a spiritually alive and growing parish, we have much to be thankful for as we reflect upon our recent past. We are
firmly grounded in our spirituality and in our charity. We are building upon a holy past as we journey forward together with God’s grace, inspiration, and courage.

Cause of Blessed: Titus Brandsma, O.Carm.
Over 10 years ago, Fr. Michael Driscoll was operated on for melanoma at
the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Hospital (Mass General) in Boston. It was
an aggressive, advanced case of melanoma, stage 4 cancer. Because of
the great doctors in Boston, and the powerful prayers of many people to
Titus Brandsma, there appears to be a complete cure of the cancer, which
had metastasized from the forehead to the neck. The Vatican doctors have
examined all the medical records and have declared the outcome “beyond
medical explanation.” Presently, the Diocesan process to examine the
witnesses has begun. We are seeking members of the Diocese who prayed
for a cure, through the intercession of Titus Brandsma, a Dutch Carmelite,
killed at Dachau in 1942. Please call the St. Jude Parish Office at
561-392-8172, so that we can get names, addresses and phone numbers
for the Palm Beach Diocesan officials to contact each of you for testimony.
It is important that we do this as quickly as possible.

WHAT IS CONSECRATED LIFE?
In 2013, Pope Francis declared a Year of Consecrated Life (YCL) to be celebrated throughout the world. YCL
began on the First Sunday of Advent, November 30, 2014. It will close on the World Day of Consecrated Life,
February 2, 2016. Pope Francis has called for this year to “wake up the world” and share the power of the
Gospel through the witness of the lives of our consecrated brothers and sisters. As we approach the day of
Consecrated Life this coming February 2, 2015 I would like to share with the parents of Religious Education
what Consecrated Life is about.
Have you ever wondered what a brother or sister does all day? What would make a young man or woman
give up their family, their home, or their career and dedicate their life to God? Consecrated life is a vocation
just as marriage and diocesan priesthood are. To be consecrated is to take special vows that set a person apart
solely for the service to God. Both men and women can choose to consecrate their lives to Christ as a way to
seek an intimate relationship with Him. These men and women give witness that Christ is ultimately who we
are called to be united to. They live the truth that only Christ can satisfy the deepest longings in a person’s
heart, and witness that this union provides a deeper joy than the secular world can give. In effect they are
previewing the way we will relate to Christ in heaven.

Those in consecrated life generally join a religious order. There are scores of religious orders - some founded
centuries ago by saints, and some founded more recently to fulfill a particular need. Consecrated life is most
often shared in a community which is united to live out their common mission together. Some religious orders
are considered “contemplative,” which means that prayer is central to their day. There are variations with
a
few orders living mostly in silence and removed from society, while others pray frequently but also work

A las 6:30 nuestra Misa de vigilia del
domingo 8 de febrero. V Domingo del
Tiempo Ordinario, Ciclo B San Marcos
Papa San Juan Pablo II
Para la gente más pobre, un hijo es un tesoro. Es verdad, se debe también ser prudentes
aquí. Pero para ellos un hijo es un tesoro. Dios sabe cómo ayudarlos…. {…}
Pero mirad también la generosidad de ese papá y de esa mamá que ve en cada hijo un tesoro.

La oración no es problema de hablar o de sentir, sino de amar. Y se ama esforzándose en intentar decir
algo al Señor aunque no se diga nada.
