Good and Faithful Servant
The St. Mary’s Griefshare bereavement support group
has started meeting on Wednesdays from 3:30 to
5:00PM at Smith Hall (downstairs). This is a 13-week
program that is available to help people cope with the
loss of a loved one in a group setting. We encourage
and welcome people to join the group at any point
during the 13 weeks; each session stands alone.
Please join us if you are struggling with your grief. We
provide a safe and loving environment to encourage
sharing and exchanging of concerns and feelings as
you are comfortable. Although the actual group
begins at 3:30PM, we start with coffee and fellowship
any time after 3:00PM.
Also, this group is open to any one in our community,
regardless of Church affiliation. So feel free to pass
the information along to anyone you know who might
need it. Please contact Bette Ross at the parish office
if you have any questions.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
What is a holy day of obligation? On holy days, Catholics
are obliged to attend Mass. Every Sunday is a holy day of
obligation because every Sunday is a “little Easter.” There are
five others throughout the year. It really is very little that
God asks of us…
We should not view “obligation” as a bad thing. After all, a
husband and wife by virtue of their vows are indeed
“obliged” to be faithful to each other. Being faithful is not a
punishment, but it is a deep act of love. Likewise, going to
Mass is not a punishment or a chore to get out of the way so
we can go to the movies or out to brunch. Holy Mass is
celebrated at Christ’s command, “Do this in memory of Me.”
If we all take a moment to understand why participating in
Mass is so important, why skipping Mass is a mortal sin, we
may begin to see our “obligation” as an act of a deep, loving
commitment to Christ. When seen as an act of love, Mass no
longer feels like an “I have to,” but instead becomes an “I
want to” – “I love you.”
With this in mind, this Tuesday, November 1, is All Saints
Day, a Holy Day of Obligation and an opportunity to say “I
love you” and “thank you” to God for His gift of the Saints. On
this solemn day, the Church honors every Saint, known and
unknown. Are you a weak sinner? I know that I am! We need
help. Ask your brothers and sisters, now alive in Christ, to
help you come closer to Him. Just as we can pray for each
other now, they are alive in Him forever and can pray for us.
Masses are: Oct. 31 (Vigil) 5:30pm (Church); and Nov. 1 at
6:30am (Old St. Mary’s); at 8:30am, 12noon, and 5:30pm
(Church); and in Spanish at 7:00pm (Old St. Mary’s).
The following day, Nov. 2, is All Souls Day. Although not a
holy day, it is tremendously important to faithful Catholics
since death is a door through which we all must pass. Do not
neglect to pray for the faithful departed! It is a spiritual work
of mercy. I’ll speak more about praying for the dead and
purgatory next week. Masses for Nov. 2 are: 12noon at
Calvary Cemetery with Bishop Guglielmone (rain location –
Old St. Mary’s); 5:30pm (Old St. Mary’s), and a special Mass of
Remembrance for all those who have died in the last year at
7pm (Old St. Mary’s).
The Jubilee Year of Mercy closing ceremonies are Nov. 20.
The Aiken Deanery will celebrate with Mass at 5:00pm,
followed by a Eucharistic Procession to Old St. Mary’s, an
opportunity to pass through the Holy Door once more, and
Benediction.
Finally, pray for our nation as we prepare for another
election. The Church has lived through and will continue to
endure through all earthly, political power structures. Our
job, as Scripture points out, is to act as leaven, as salt of the
earth, and the light of the world. No political leader can be a
savior – the world already happens to have one, Jesus Christ.
Be His light. May His Kingdom come!

From the Bench
The history of the organ is really the history of
humanity's attempt to get many pipes to sing at the
direction of just one person. In ancient times, there
existed in various places in the world double flutes.
Some of these, just like organ pipes, were not pure
flutes, but had resonating reeds in them like a clarinet
