SEPTEMBER 7, 2014 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time SEPTEMBER 7, 2014 If you want to be heard, you'd better start listening. "If he listens to you, you have gained your brother" Matthew 18:15 Dear brothers and sisters, in today's Gospel Lesson, Jesus says to His disciples, "If another member of the Church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one." When our brothers and sisters stray from the sheepfold of Christ, we members of Christ's Community are given the responsibility to do everything we can to bring the lost sheep back into the fold. But how do we get them to listen? Love is the answer! The lost ones won't be listening to us unless we ourselves are listening to the Word of God, who is Love. Those of us who have identified with the Lord Jesus have been taught a very special kind of love, which among other things, is a listening love. It is the love that asks, "How can I give of myself in order that you can be fulfilled?" It's not the kind of love that tries to cut the other person down to your size or make the other person fit into your mold. It's not the kind of love that prompts husbands and wives, parents and children, relatives and friends to remake each other into their own image and likeness. Rather, it is the kind of love which the New Testament calls "agape love": the love that is for the other, the love that affirms the life of the other, the love that rejoices in the uniqueness of the other. We talk too much -- all of us -- talk, talk, talk. Even when we're not talking, we're not listening. We're trying to think of what to say when the other person slows up enough for us to break in. What a contrast to Our Lord, who in all of history had more right to speak with authority than anyone else. Yet how often we find Him listening! All sorts of people came to Him with all sorts of problems -- physical, emotional and spiritual -- and Jesus listened. Jesus wanted them to know that He understood their plight; that He could identify with their hurts and their temptations. "The measure you measure with will be measured back to you," Jesus said. If you want to be heard, you had better start listening. Peace, Father Miguel Ceja CLASSES BEGIN THIS WEEK!: Religious Ed in English begin SEPT 9th! CONFIRMATION begins Sept 10th! Si te escucha, habrás salvado a tu hermano.”
