Adventactuallyhastwodistinctphases.
ThefirstphasedealswiththeFUTURE,thatis,
ourpreparationfortheSECONDCOMINGOF
JESUS.WerecognizethatJesus,whohadcome
amongus,promisedthatHewouldcomeagain
andtakeallthefaithfulbackwithHim.Wewillbe
raisedbytheFatherasJesuswasandbroughtby
JesustolifewiththeTrinity.Inthemeantime,we
needtorepentofoursinfulways,toliveoutthe
teachingsofJesus,andbegintodesire—even,
yearn—tobewiththeGodwholovesus.
ThesecondphasedealswiththePAST,thatis,
werememberandre lectuponthefactthatJESUS
HASALREADYCOMEAMONGUS.Thisphase
beginsonDecember17thandisthetimewhenwe
praythe“O”Antiphons.Thisisatimeinwhichwe
needtore lectuponwhatmovedGodtosendthe
Sonintothisworld.Godlooksuponthesinful
messwehavemadeofthedivinelycreated
universe.And,insteadofpunishingus,God
considersthatwesinfulhumanbeingsareworthy
ofredemption.So,Godinitiatesthisprocessby
givingusanew-bornchild.Now,wecanrelive
Jesus’birthinourworld;wecanrecognizethat
Godhassavedusfromoursinfuldeedsandgiven
usJesus’teachingsanddeedsasourwayofliving
andbehaving.
Imyselfalwaysaddathirdphase,thatis,the
PRESENT.WecometoMass,andJESUSCOMESTO
USINTHEEUCHARIST.Inaway,theEucharistis
anevery-dayChristmas.Whenachildisborn,we
naturallywanttoholdthebaby.Whenwedothis,
wearetakingthisbabyintoourlife,andweare
alsostatingthatwewanttoberesponsibleforthis
baby’swelfare.WecometoMassbecausewe
desiretopraiseandthankGodandbecausewe
desiretobesoclosetoJesusthatwewantJesusto
bewithinus.WearetakingJesusintoourlife,and
wearealsostatingthatwewanttoberesponsible
forallowingJesustoinfluenceourlives.
Allofthesephases,whichIlistabove,requirea
WAITING.Awaiting:likeanexpectantmother
focusedonthechildwithinher;likethefarmer
trustingthattheseedwillsproutthroughthesoil;
likethespouseofadyingmatewhoyearnsthat
theotherbeginstodesiretobewithGod;likethe
refugee,whopraysthatthecountryheandhis
familyareenteringwillbehospitable;likethe
grandchildrenwhoeagerlyruntobethefirstto
entertheirgrand-parents’embrace.
PopeFrancishasaskedustohaveaYEAROF
MERCY,startingonTuesday,December8th,the
feastoftheImmaculateConception.Thisfeastis
alsoourownnationalfeast.Adventhelpsusto
longforthemercywhichGoddesirestogivetous.
WhenwereceivethisgiftofmercyfromGod,we
realizeGodalonecansay:“nevermorewillI
remembertheirsins.”(Jer.31:34)Whenwedo
God’sunconditionallove,thisenablesustochange
ourlives.Wenolongerhavetoseekrevengeor
“payback”fortheharmwehavereceived.Wecan
seethegoodnessintheotherperson(s)and inda
reasontoforgivehim/her/them.Whenweenable
otherstoexperienceourcompassionand
forgiveness;thentheythemselves indareasonto
changeandtorespondmercifullytoo.Thisisthe
reasonwhywecallJesus“thePrinceofPeace;”
thisisalsothereasonwhywecanseethat“mercy
isaboveallofGod’sworks.”(Cf.Ps.145:8-9)

Los buenos administradores de los bienes de Dios creen
que Dios, quien ha empezado esta buena obra en ellos la

la Vigilia Pascual de Sábado Santo. *Para los de 3er año

“La Esquina Ignaciana”
Cada año en el medio del tiempo de Adviento, cuando todo el mundo cristiano
espera otra vez más el día de la gran apariencia del Niño de Belén, la iglesia para en
una manera dramática. ¿Por qué este cambio de ritmo? ¿Cuál de las personas,
relacionadas con el milagro de la encarnación de nuestro Dios, puede interrumpir el
movimiento fuerte que está dirigiéndonos al pesebre y al himno de ‘gloria’ de los
ángeles? Instintivamente, nosotros sabemos que solamente María tendría tanta
influencia con su Hijo, tanta ternura entre los cristianos, para cumplir exitosamente
aquella tarea complicada. La razón por aquella confianza queda en la convicción
absoluta que María jamás nos detraería del enfoque principal de su vida, que es el
Hijo que nació en Belén, que vivió en Nazaret y que murió en Jerusalén.
El martes se celebrará la Inmaculada Concepción de la Virgen. Porque ella es la
patrona de los Estados Unidos y porque la fiesta pone en relieve la creencia tradicional de la iglesia del
puesto absolutamente único que ocupe María en la economía de la salvación todos los fieles estamos
llamados a juntarnos al altar para dar gracias especiales a Dios por un don tan preciosa de la madre de su
Hijo.
Pero, la otra celebración mariana, celebrada del día sábado, es la que llama la atención más fuertemente, no
solamente de los fieles de este país pero también de todos los pueblos de los dos continentes de las Américas.
Este día celebraremos la memoria de nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Su cuento, tan conocido y tan querido,
sobre aquel pobre campesino a quien la Virgen visitaba con su mensaje de esperanza simbolizada por la
construcción de un templo nuevo para la gloria de su divino hijo, despierta en los corazones de todos un
canto de confianza y alegría cada vez que volvemos a contarlo. Juan Diego, que representa a todos los
marginados de nuestro mundo, con su fe y con su valentía en frente del representante oficial de la iglesia se
ha hecho un agente extraordinario del deseo de Dios para que se estableciera su Reino de justicia y paz en las
tierras de México y desde allí, a todas las partes del mundo. La Madre de Jesús es la portavoz de esta
esperanza celestial.
Reflexionando sobre el misterio de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, nosotros podemos ver que, en realidad, la
elección del momento de la fiesta es perfecta. No es un desvío del camino que nos está guiando a Belén, sino
es un lucero para clarificar el significado verdadero de aquella venida de Dios en la carne. El nacimiento de
Jesús es esperanza para nuestro mundo, una esperanza que se anuncia en primer lugar a los más pobres. Su
llegada es esperanza para todos los hombres y mujeres especialmente a los marginados y despreciados. Su
apariencia siempre es una de sorpresa, no conocida en el primer instante a los ricos y poderosos sino
intuitivamente los pequeñitos de nuestra sociedad. La Guadalupana nos comunica gentilmente, pero con una
voz clara, que su Hijo, nuestro Dios, se queda en pie al lado de los que sufren como Él mismo sufría en su
vida.
Por eso, esta fiesta de la Virgen nos acelera en nuestro viaje alegre por este tiempo santo de Adviento. Las
flores y la música, imágenes tan importantes en el cuento original, nos llaman a nosotros hoy para que
investiguemos la belleza situada en nuestras vidas diarias. La emoción de los niños, las canciones de los
jóvenes, la generosidad de los feligreses, las oraciones de los ancianos, el cariño espontáneo entre amigos y
muchas personas recién conocidas - toda la hermosura asociada con la espera del Niño Santo de Belén - nos
ayuda en nuestra preparación que es el tiempo de Adviento. Como celebramos esta semana con oración y
canción y con una comida comunal, demos gracias en una manera especial por todo que María representa en
la vida de la fe de la iglesia y de la esperanza que Dios siempre nos ofrece con la presencia de su Hijo.
