Ten Communities Recognized for Excellence & Innovation in Building
Partnerships Globally
Sister Cities International will
honor ten communities for
their outstanding sister city
programs during its annual
conference this week in Fort
Lauderdale, Fla. Top honors
recognize
programs
throughout the U.S. doing
work around the globe.
“These are the best of the best
for
advancing
cultural
understanding. We are a citizen
diplomacy network more than
a half century old and our local
programs continue to blaze
trails for world peace,” said
Patrick Madden, executive
director of Sister Cities
International. The diversity
and innovation of programs
are the hallmarks of our
network and these awardees,
said Madden.
The Best Overall Program
Award (population greater

plugging in at the highest
levels. These types of contacts
are hard to come by,” said Jerry
Roper, president of the
Chicagoland Chamber of
Commerce, in the group’s

Los CDC Lanzan Esfuerzo De Inmunización Con Motivo Del
Regreso A La Escuela
Un millón de bebés pequeños en los Estados Unidos no están completamente inmunizados y, por ende, están expuestos al riesgo de sufrir de tos

los Centros para el Control y
la
Prevención
de
Enfermedades (CDC) de los
Estados Unidos. Los CDC
están concentrando gran parte
de sus esfuerzos para llegar
hasta los padres, cuidadores y
proveedores de salud de la
población de hispanos/latinos,
ya que aproximadamente 1 de
cada 4 niños de menos de 3
años no está totalmente
inmunizado.
En esta época del año, los
padres están preparando a sus
niños mayores para el regreso
a la escuela y entre los
preparativos se encuentra
asegurarse de que han recibido
todas las vacunas necesarias.
Sin embargo, para lograr que
todos los niños están
protegidos
de
las
enfermedades prevenibles por
la vacunación, los CDC están
instando a los padres y los
cuidadores a que comprueben
que las vacunas de sus bebés y
sus niños en edad preescolar
también están al día antes del
comienzo de la escuela, ya que
los hermanos mayores pueden
llevar enfermedades de la
escuela al hogar. Debido a que
sus sistemas inmunológicos
todavía se están desarrollando,
los bebés y los niños pequeños
son más susceptibles a las
enfermedades infecciosas que
sus hermanos mayores.
Los CDC han advertido que,
además del peligro que
representan para los bebés

a proteger a los niños para que

que también contribuyen a

dijo la Cirujano General

“Nuestra meta es que cada

de edad.”
Los CDC se están apoyando
en
la

mensaje.
Además, los CDC quieren
dejar muy claro que las
vacunas son seguras y los
beneficios que aportan a los

Wells Fargo Launches Enhanced Remittance Service; Offers Zero
Dollar Transaction Fee
Wells Fargo & Company
(NYSE:WFC) said that Wells
Fargo
ExpressSend(SM)
customers with qualifying
accounts now can have
transaction fees discounted or
waived and have more choices
in how they remit money to
Mexico,
El
Salvador,
Guatemala, China, Vietnam,
India and the Philippines.
Key features of the new Wells
Fargo ExpressSend service are:
— Wells Fargo customers can
have
the
remittance
transaction fee discounted or
even waived if they send
money directly from their
eligible Wells Fargo checking
or savings account. All
customers using the accountbased service can have zero
dollar transaction fees as part
of the new service introduction
through September 30, 2007.
— Customers will have greater
flexibility in remittance
transfer methods, which
enables them to remit funds
faster, more conveniently and
safer to friends and families
overseas. The remittance
transfer choices now include:
account to account, account to
cash, cash to cash, and cash to
account.*
— Those receiving funds in
Mexico, El Salvador and
Guatemala can now receive
their money as soon as the
same day it is sent. Recipients
in China, India, Vietnam, and
the Philippines can now
receive their money as soon as
the next business day.
— Customers will also receive
increased information when
they complete a transaction in
a Wells Fargo’s banking stores,
including details about the
remitter, the beneficiary, how
and where funds are sent, the
fee, how much money the
beneficiary will receive,
foreign exchange (FX) rate (if
applicable) for the transaction
and the Foreign Exchange
Margin (estimate of the
amount of revenue Wells Fargo
earns on the foreign currency
conversion).
“Most Latin American and
Asian
countries
have
significantly large unbanked
consumer populations and
eliminating the bank account
requirement for the receiving
country makes it much easier
for recipients to get their
money,” said Daniel Ayala,
head of Wells Fargo’s Global
Remittance Services. “Based on
our tests and pilots, accountto-cash will be the preferred
choice for our customers. This
opens the service for use by a
large number of remitters
whose friends and family
overseas (beneficiaries) do not
have bank accounts in their
home country.”
“Appleseed commends
efforts to provide consumers
with more complete pricing
and transaction information,”
said
Betsy
Cavendish,
executive
director
of
Appleseed, a network of public
interest law centers in the U.S.
and Mexico advocating for
improved financial access for
consumers.
“It’s only fair that people
sending money know how
much their relatives will be
able to pick up and when the
funds will be available.” Wells
Fargo is a participant in
Appleseed’s initiative to create
a “Fair Exchange” brand,
which would make it easier for
consumers to shop for the best
remittance deals by providing
upfront pricing disclosure.
“Remitters have generally
benefited from a sharp
reduction in remittance costs in
the past few years. Yet, the lack
of pricing transparency has
remained a cause of frustration
among them,” said Gwenn
Bézard, Aite Group research
director. “By overcoming some
of the technical and risk issues
related to disclosing the
foreign exchange fee upfront,
Wells Fargo is making an
important contribution to
making the remittance
industry truly consumerfriendly. By introducing
account-to-cash remittances,
Wells Fargo is also sharply
increasing the relevance of
banks to remittance senders.”
Wells Fargo offers international
remittance services to the top
seven (Mexico, El Salvador,
Guatemala, India, the Philippines,
Vietnam, and China.) immigrant
remitting segments in the Wells
Fargo banking states. It began
offering the International ATM
Remittance
Account
for
customers sending money to the
Philippines in 1994 and launched
the InterCuenta Express(R)
consumer remittance product to
Mexico the following year.
Long Overdue Federal Minimum Wage
Increase
Colorado, other states pave the way; Congress slowly follows
Hardworking people across
the U.S. will have cause to
celebrate as the national
minimum wage increase goes
into effect. Although gas prices
and cost of living expenses
have soared during the last
decade, this is the first increase
in the federal minimum wage
since 1997, from $5.15 to $5.85
per hour.
Congress has finally acted to
loosen the squeeze on lowincome workers. Colorado,
along with 29 other states and
the District of Columbia,
pushed Congress to act on this
issue by raising their minimum
wage rates.

In 2006, Colorado voters
approved Amendment 42 of
the state constitution to
increase the minimum wage to
$6.85 per hour, indexed
annually to inflation. The
leadership in Colorado to
increase the earnings of 138,000
low-wage Coloradans helped
build momentum to raise the
wages of nearly 13 million
workers across the country.
“The federal minimum wage
increase is a great example of
the
impact
grassroots
organizing can have on our
state and our country,” said
Jessie Ulibarri, Director of the
Campaign for Economic
Justice
with
Colorado
Progressive Coalition (CPC), a
lead organization in the
Amendment
42
fight.
“Coloradans were tired of
waiting for politicians in
Washington to act and took
matters into their own hands
to raise the minimum wage,
helping pave the way for the
nation to follow suit.”
The federal increase will
occur in three increments, with
the first raise to $5.85
beginning today, followed a
year later by another 70-cent
increase to $6.55, and finally
reaching $7.25 in 2009. In
contrast, Amendment 42 in
Colorado ties minimum wage
to annual inflation costs, so it
guarantees
automatic
increases, with a range likely
between 20 to 25-cents per
year, and does not depend on
Congress to take action.
”Today’s minimum wage
increase sends an important
message that America values
hard work and that jobs should
lift workers and their families
out of poverty, not keep them
stuck in it. This raise for the
nation’s lowest-paid workers
is a long overdue step toward
economic justice,” said Linda
Meric, Director of 9to5,
National Association of
Working Women. 9to5 was a
lead
organization
in
Colorado’s Amendment 42
campaign, and Meric was a
chief public spokesperson for
the proponents of the initiative.
“Due to the work of 9to5 and
CPC, with the many other
grassroots organizations who
worked on this issue, our
minimum wage in Colorado
will exceed the federal rate
because it is tied to inflation.
We didn’t want to wait another
10 years for members of
Congress to realize that living
costs increase,” added Ulibarri.

The Pikes Peak International
Hill Climb is called the “Race
to the Clouds” and its proud
history goes back to 1916. The
race starts at an altitude of
9,390 feet above sea level (2,862
meters), and finishes at 14,107
feet above sea level (4,300
meters). The altitude change is
4,593 feet or 1,400 meters. In
just 12.5 miles (20 kilometers)
the course winds through a
total of 156 corners.
The race is simple; whoever
finishes with the fastest time
wins.
The course is made up of
three sections; the high-speed,
paved section on the bottom,
the technical section in the
middle and the barren, gravel
road at the top section - located
above the tree line. There are
no guardrails so there can be
no mistakes by the drivers.
Just one mistake puts drivers
and vehicles off the course and
down the cliff.
The combination of high
altitude and low oxygen makes
the course tough on both
normally aspirated racecars
and their normally aspirated
drivers.
To conquer Pikes Peak, the
race vehicles need large wings,
good aerodynamic balance and
nearly 1,000 horsepower.

every metric of comparison.
Highlander will continue to
hold a unique distinction
within the Toyota brand and
within the automotive
industry. It is a vehicle with an
extraordinary
level
of
versatility, innovatio and
technology that enables it to
cross demographic boundaries
between buyers of SUVs,
passenger cars, minivans and
environmentally clean and
fuel-efficient vehicles.
Along with the 4Runner and
FJ Cruiser, Highlander anchors
Toyota’s three-vehicle mid-size
SUV
lineup.
Equally
important, along with Prius
and Camry Hybrid, it is a key
component in the industry’s
only three-vehicle hybrid
strategy.
“The all-new Highlander
raises the bar in every metric
of comparison, particularly in
the areas of safety, quality, and
environmental concerns,” said
Brian Smith, Corporate
Marketing Manager, Truck and
SUV, Toyota Motor Sales,
U.S.A. “In addition to all of the
attributes
expected in a SUV such as
powerful performance, fourwheel-drive capability, utility,
and ride height, Highlander
will be the most versatile and
innovative vehicle in our entire
model lineup as it will
continue to offer something for
everyone.”
The 2008 second-generation
Highlander is significantly
larger, roomier and more
powerful than the vehicle it
replaces. Even with an
increased curb weight,
Highlander ’s fuel efficiency
improves. It is noticeably
quieter, smarter and more
spacious with improved
unprecedented versatility and
ride comfort. It will be among
the leaders in providing
standard active and passive
safety equipment in a segment
where safety is at the top of
purchase considerations. And,
it’s all wrapped in a package
designed for buyers who want
to stand
out and make a statement.
“Customer First” Quality
As vehicles become
increasingly complex, Toyota
has realized the need to revamp the engineering and
manufacturing processes. In
2005, President Katsuaki
Watanabe took the reigns of
Toyota Motor Corporation
(TMC) and issued a companywide challenge to reprioritize
product quality.
The initial steps to guide the
quality enhancement agenda
began with engineering
innovation.

2008 Toyota Highlander Cont...
He tasked each TMC chief
engineer to offer new ideas to
improve quality. Everything
from tools and processes to
budget, was open to
discussion.
The result was a companywide agenda called “Customer
First.” The program reallocated assets, allowed more
development time, increased
headcount, and reverted to the
use of additional prototypes to
gauge
quality
during
development.
Raw materials were
reconsidered and assembly
was extensively analyzed. The
Highlander development
program served as the pilot
and featured three critical
criteria. First, the process of
producing
the
most
comprehensive and accurate
original drawings possible was
given the top priority. The
vehicle would only be as good
as the quality of the blueprints.
Thanks to Customer First, the
new Highlander is a
signifificantly higher quality
vehicle. It was an expensive,
time-consuming process that
ran counter to an established
agenda of cutting costs,
manpower and development
time.
Versatile and Spacious
Interior Design
The completely redesigned
and innovative passenger
compartment is open and airy.
In an environment where
every fraction of an inch
counts, the Highlander ’s
interior measures more than
four inches longer, front-toback, and it’s also wider. This
increased space has enabled
designers and engineers to
provide additional room
between each of the three rows
of seats.
Engineers and designers
carefully analyzed each of the
Highlander ’s
passenger
positions, paying careful
attention, especially, to that of
the driver. They provided the
driver with a steering column
that now offers both tilt and
telescope function to help
provide the most comfortable
driving position possible. They
ensured that switches and
knobs are large, well-marked,
and easy to use.
Comfort and Convenience
The all-new Highlander will
be well-appointed with an
array of standard comfort and
convenience features. Among
the many key standard
features on all Highlander
models will include AM/FM/
CD
with
six-speakers
(standard on Highlander and
Highlander Hybrid Base
grades); AM/FM six-disc in-
dash CD Changer with six
speakers,
MP3/WMA
playback capability and
satellite radio capability
(standard on Sport and
Limited Highlander and
Highlander Hybrid Limited);
universal mini-jack; defrosterlinked CFC-free front air
conditioning; front seats with
height adjustable active head
rests and eight-way (10-way on
Limited) adjustable driver ’s
seat; color-keyed power
remote outside mirrors, and
numerous
storage
compartments throughout the
cabin.
All-new for Highlander is a
40/20/40 split fold-down
second row, featuring a middle
Center Stow™ seat and
console with cupholders. The
second row also slides fore and
aft and reclines.
The long list of standard
features also includes power

driver ’s

SALUD
No tomar suficiente agua
puede ayudar al desarrollo de
cálculos renales y los ejercicios
típicos de los meses del verano
provocan que los cálculos se
muevan
causando
los
dolorosos síntomas.
Según los expertos, es
importante tomar agua
durante todo el año, pero
especialmente durante porque
ayuda a prevenir los cálculos.
“La mejor manera de prevenir
los cálculos renales es
hidratarse durante las 24 horas
del día. Yo recomiendo a mis
pacientes que tomen por lo
menos seis a ocho vasos de
agua todos los días, y les pido
que tomen el agua durante
todo el día hasta acostarse. Es
importante tomar agua todo el
año, pero especialmente
durante los meses de verano,”
dice Gary Faerber, profesor
dice. “Quiero evitar que se
desarrollen más cálculos
renales porque son tan
dolorosos y se demoran mucho
tiempo en eliminarse. No vale
la pena no hacer el esfuerzo.”
Los cambios alimenticios de
Bidwell
son
medidas
importantes para reducir el
riesgo de desarrollar los
cálculos renales, especialmente
entre las personas que ya los
han padecido. (Vea más abajo
consejos de prevención.)
Un 75 por ciento de los
estadounidenses
que
desarrollan calculus renales
tienen una variedad que
contiene calcio. Otros tipos de
cálculos, que contienen ácido
úrico, se relacionan con
infecciones del tracto urinario
o son piedras de cisteína
causadas por una anormalidad
genética.
En general, los cálculos son
evacuados
de
manera
espontánea. Un 15 por ciento
requieren algún tratamiento y
las opciones incluyen fármacos
para el dolor; fármacos que

litotricia; una ureteroscopia en
la cual un instrumento
atraviesa el sistema urinario, y
un láser pequeño rompe el
cálculo; y un procedimiento en
el cual se hace una incisión en
la espalda para poder romper
el cálculo - una técnica que se
usa para cálculos muy
grandes.
7 maneras para reducir su
riesgo de desarrollar los
cálculos renales:
1. Tome mucha agua. Tome
agua todo el día, incluso
durante la noche antes de
acostarse y durante las horas
de la noche, para que su cuerpo
se mantenga hidratado por las
24 horas del día.
2. Reduzca su consumo de
gaseosas y té frio. Las gaseosas
de color oscuro contienen
oxalato, un ácido que puede
llevar a la formación de
cálculos renales de calico
oxalato. Los tés helados suelen
contener oxalato. Entre otros
productos con muchas
cantidades de oxalato se
incluyen el chocolate, el
ruibarbo, las fresas, las
espinacas, y las nueces.
3. Haga ejercicio y baje de
peso. El aumento de los casos
de piedras renales en los
Estados Unidos se debe
parcialmente al hecho de que
los estadounidenses suelen ser
sedentarios y obesos, dice
Faerber.
4. Tome limonada. No la tome

Stay Hydrated This Summer To Prevent Painful Kidney Stones
U-M Doctor Advises Increase In Kidney Stones Is Common During Warmer Months
by Katie Gazella
We’ve all heard that it is
important to drink a lot of
water, especially in the
summer, to replenish the fluids
lost due to heat and outdoor
activities. If you haven’t
followed that advice in the
past, here’s a reason to pay

FACT: 80% of all learning is visual
Your child’s eyes ........Are important to us
attention this summer: Staying
hydrated can help you prevent
what many people describe as
the worst pain of their lives.
That pain is caused by kidney
stones, which are becoming
more common in general and
also are more common during
the summer months. Not
drinking enough fluids can
lead to the development of
kidney stones, and the types of
exercise that are typical during
the summer tend to shake
loose kidney stones, causing
patients to develop symptoms
from the stones.
Throughout the year, but
particularly in the summer,
drinking enough water is the
most important step people
can take toward preventing the
development of kidney stones,
experts say.
“One of the best ways to
prevent kidney stones is to stay
hydrated throughout the entire
24-hour period. I recommend
my patients have at least six to
eight glasses of water a day,
and I ask them to make sure
that they spread that
throughout the entire day and
up until night time. This is
important year-round, but
especially in the summer
months,” says Gary Faerber,
M.D., associate professor of
urology at the University of
Michigan Health System.
“It is very important for
people to be aware of how to
prevent kidney stones because
many people - about 13 percent
of men and 7 percent of women
- will have kidney stones
sometime in their lives,”
Faerber adds.
For Sharon Bidwell, who first
realized she had kidney stones
six years ago, the pain was
second only to labor pains. She
was treated with antibiotics
and pain medication, and
ultimately had lithotripsy
performed. This is a common
procedure that uses sound
waves to break up the stones
in the kidney.
Not wanting to ever go
through that again, Bidwell, 58,
has changed her diet especially her intake of fluids.
“I have cut back extremely on
cola. I would drink five or six
cans a day. I’m down to one can
of soda pop a day, and I have
tried to increase the amount of
water that I intake,” she says.
“I really want to try to avoid
having kidney stones again
because they’re so painful and
it takes so long for them to
pass. It’s just not worth not
trying harder.” The kinds of
dietary changes Bidwell has
made are important steps
toward reducing one’s risk of
developing kidney stones,
especially among people who
previously have had kidney
stones. (See list below for more
prevention tips.)
Three-quarters of people in
the United States who develop
kidney stones have the variety
that contains calcium. Other
types of stones contain uric
acid, are related to urinary tract
infections or are cystine stones
that are caused by a genetic
abnormality.
Typically, stones are passed
spontaneously. For the 15
percent or so that require
treatment, options include
pain medications;
calcium-channel blocking
medications;
lithotripsy
(which Bidwell had); a
ureteroscopy, in which a small
instrument is passed up
through the urinary system,
and a small laser is used to
break up the stone; and a
procedure in which a small
incision is made through the
back so that the stone can be
broken up - a technique used
for very large stones.
7 ways to reduce your risk of
getting kidney stones
1. Drink plenty of water.
Drink water throughout the
day, including at night before
bed or during the nighttime

should continue taking
calcium supplements. Some
studies have shown that foods
rich in calcium may actually
help to prevent kidney stones,
but taking calcium in pill form
may increase the risk.
7. Ask your physician about
foods rich in vitamin D. For
people with highly acidic
urine, you may need to eat less
meat, fish and poultry -foods
that increase the amount of
acid in the urine.

Immunization Effort Cont. from page 1
protect
children
from
developing potentially serious
diseases, but they also help
protect entire communities by
preventing and reducing the
spread of infectious diseases,”
said Assistant Surgeon General
Anne Schuchat, M.D.
“Our goal is that every child
will be immunized on time,
every time by 2 years old.”
The CDC is relying on
collaboration-involvement of
the media and community
leaders-to get its message out.
In addition, the CDC wants to
make it clear that vaccines are
safe and provide a good return
on investment.
“Vaccines are safer and more
effective than ever before,”
Schuchat said.
“Vaccines are also among the
most successful and costeffective public health tools
available for preventing
disease and death.”
CDC protects people’s health
and safety by preventing and
controlling diseases and
injuries; enhances health
decisions by providing
credible information on critical
health issues; and promotes
healthy living through strong
partnerships with local,
national and international
organizations.

statutes, regulations and
policies, as well as the U.S.
Constitution.
The announcements by DHS
and DOS allow intending
immigrants to file applications
for adjustment of status “green
cards” until and including
August 17, 2007. They also
allow these applicants to pay
the current fees, even though
the fees otherwise will increase
on July 31, 2007.
These changes resolve the
majority of the issues in the
class action lawsuit AILF has
prepared. The one issue
unresolved is for the “Other
Workers.”
AILF worked with intending
immigrants from across the
country to prepare the class
action suit. Many of these
applicants have waited in line
for years and were following
the government’s rules to
obtain a green card.

Local collaborative projects,
such as this one, will continue
to be instrumental in
improving county and state
immunization rates. Colorado
recently received notoriety
from the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC)
for the most improved
immunization series rate—
reflecting
a
22.4%
improvement between 20022005 and moving the state’s
ranking from 50th to 16th in
the nation.
