Thank you for your generous response to Haiti Earthquake Relief - $3,112.00 were donated at our three weekend Masses, including children’s boxes that
contained almost thirty-two dollars in coins. In the regular collection for parish support we also received a nice surprise. An anonymous donor tied a ribbon
around bills totaling over seven-hundred dollars with a note saying, “I had a good year.” Thank you. And thank you all for your Stewardship that enables us
to fulfill our parish mission and to help needy brothers and sisters in our local area – and throughout the world.
This Sunday Jesus announces that the Spirit has anointed him to “bring glad tidings to the poor...liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind and let the
oppressed go free.” Jesus clearly identifies with the weak and marginalized.
What group in our nation is more vulnerable than unborn children? Thirty-seven years ago, six men on the
Supreme Court voted to withdraw legal protection from the tiniest members of American society. It was an
unfortunate ruling – and like other unjust decisions (e.g. the Dred Scott case) it will one day be reversed. A
reversal, by the way, will not make abortion illegal, but will allow state and national legislatures to make
specific laws regarding treatment of the unborn.
Regarding protection for the unborn – and support for their moms and dads - huge
number of people converged on our state capital last Tuesday. I was pleased to see a
good representation from St. Mary’s. The size of the crowd prevented us from converging into a single group, but I did get a few family pictures that I posted on our
parish website. Pictured below are Michael & Diana Bizak with their children, Hannah & Thomas. And the picture of Eryn Chestine sums up why the pro-life movement continues to gain strength.
The day began with a Mass at St. Michael Parish. Fr. Ed White preached an excellent
homily. After describing the devastation caused by the abortion license, he spoke about our hope for the future. Fr. Ed used a striking
image that caught the attention of young people, as I discovered in talking with middle school students from my former parish, Holy
Family in Seattle. Fr. Ed mentioned the scene from The Lord of the Rings where King Aragon enlists the help of departed souls to
combat the evil engulfing Middle Earth. We also have army of souls (the Communion of Saints) on our sides in this great contest of
our age.
Another vulnerable group in our society are immigrants. The American Bishops are deeply concerned about the needs of immigrants
who make up such a large and vital part of our Church. They have developed a well thought-out call for Comprehensive Immigration
Reform. This complex issue touches us very personally here at St. Mary’s. On January 29 I will be having a meeting of our parish
Social Justice Committee to consider how we can best respond to the postcard campaign, proposed by our bishops. If you have specific
interest and concerns on this issue, please join Jim Bloss, other parishioners and me this Friday at 7 p.m. in Room 3 of our parish hall.
Speaking of parish consultative groups, we had a great meeting of Building Commission on Tuesday evening. I will report next week on pending projects,
but this week I would like to mention projects completed since our December 1 meeting:
Light bulbs in parking lot replaced
Assessment of parking lot drainage system
Drains cleaned out and monitored
Church flashing screwed down
Church Gutters cleaned out
Moss killer set down on roof
Outlet replaced (in the church in the main aisle)
New thermostat for church, ongoing monitoring of heating system
Sound system monitored and adjusted
New outside carpet installed at the east entrance
Broken garage door opener replaced in the rectory
Jim Yap and Jose Rodriguez meet with me on January 30 to begin developing a plan for our landscaping. We will be doing this, especially in preparation for
our parish Spring Clean-Up on March 20. The Building Commission will meet again on March 16.
Another important consultative body meets this week – our parish Finance Council. Our ability to realize parish dreams depends on our financial health. At
the Thursday evening meeting we will have a six-month report on income and expenses (July 1 through December 31, 2009). I thank you for your support of
St. Mary of the Valley and as your pastor, I pledge to be a good steward of your trust. In these final weeks of January we will be sending you the summary of
your donations that you can use in preparing your income tax statement. If you discover any discrepancies, please notify Anita at the parish office.
Finally I look forward to seeing you at Generations of Faith this Wednesday. After the dinner, we will break into groups. I will be with the adults continuing
to discuss with you the most fundamental element of our Christian life – prayer. Even if you have not yet attended, I encourage you to come to this month’s
Generation of Faith.

Gracias por su generosa respuesta para el Alivio al Terremoto de Haití - $3.112,00 fueron donados en nuestras tres Misas del fin de
semana, incluyendo cajas de niños que contuvieron casi treinta y dos dólares en monedas. En la colección regular para apoyo de la
parroquia nosotros también recibimos una sorpresa agradable. Un donante anónimo ató una cinta alrededor de unos billetes que
totalizan más de setecientos dólares con una nota diciendo, "tuve un buen año ". Gracias. Y gracias por su corresponsabilidad que
nos permite cumplir nuestra misión de parroquia y para ayudar a hermanos y hermanas necesitados en nuestra área local – y a
través del mundo.
Este domingo Jesús anuncia que el Espíritu lo ha ungido para "traer buenas noticias al pobre. ..liberar a los cautivos, dar la
curación a los ciegos y la libertad a los oprimidos". Jesús se identifica claramente con el débil
y marginado.
¿Qué grupo en nuestra nación es más vulnerable que niños aun no nacidos? Hace treinta y
siete años, seis hombres en el Tribunal Supremo votaron para retirar la protección legal de los
miembros más diminutos de la sociedad norteamericana. Fue una resolución desgraciada – y
como otras decisiones injustas (por ejemplo el caso Dred Scott) un día será revertido. Una
reversión, a propósito, no hará el aborto ilegal, pero permitirá al estado y las legislaturas
nacionales hacer las leyes específicas con respecto al tratamiento del no nacido aún.
Con respecto a la protección para el aún no nacido – y apoyo para sus madres y padres –un
número inmenso de personas se reunieron en nuestra capital del estado el martes
pasado. Estuve complacido de ver una buena representación del Santa María. El

estudiantes del colegio de mi parroquia anterior, la Sagrada Familia en Seattle. El Padre Ed mencionó la escena de El
Señor de los Anillos donde el Rey Aragón recluta la ayuda de almas para combatir el mal que sumerge la Tierra Central. Nosotros
también tenemos a ejército de almas (la Comunión de los Santos) de nuestro lado en este gran concurso de nuestra época.
Otro grupo vulnerable en nuestra sociedad son los inmigrantes. Los Obispos norteamericanos están profundamente preocupados
sobre las necesidades de los inmigrantes que hacen tan grande y esencial parte de nuestra Iglesia. Ellos han desarrollado un
llamado bien pensado para una Reforma de Inmigración. Este asunto complejo nos toca muy personalmente aquí en Santa María.
El 29 de enero estaré teniendo una reunión con el Comité de Justicia Social de nuestra parroquia para considerar cómo podemos
responder mejor a la campaña de la tarjeta postal, propuesto por nuestros obispos. Si usted tiene interés y preocupaciones
específicos en este asunto, únanse por favor a Jim Bloss, otros parroquianos y a mí este viernes a las 7 de la tarde en el salón 3.

Jim Yap y José Rodríguez se reunirán conmigo el 30 de enero para empezar a desarrollar un plan para nuestros jardines.
Estaremos haciendo esto, especialmente en preparación para nuestra Limpieza de Primavera de parroquia el 20 de marzo. La
Comisión que Construye se reunirá otra vez el 16 de marzo.
Otro cuerpo consultivo importante se reunirá esta semana – nuestro Concilio de Finanza de parroquia. Nuestra capacidad de
realizar sueños parroquiales depende de nuestra salud financiera. En la reunión del jueves por la tarde tendremos un reporte de seis
-meses en ingresos y gastos (1 de julio hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2009). Yo les agradezco por su apoyo a Santa María del Valle
y ,como su pastor yo prometo para ser un guardián bueno de su confianza. En estas semanas finales de enero nosotros le estaremos
enviando el resumen de sus donativos que usted puede utilizar a preparar su declaración de impuestos. Si usted descubre cualquier

capitolio del estado en la marcha anual para la Vida. Estaré guiando a
quien quiera de ustedes asistir al Día católico de Apoyo en Olimpia en
febrero. 9 (había un bolante en el ultimo boletín del Domingo pasado) otra oportunidad de hacer nuestra vo escuchada por nuestros
representantes en Olimpia acerca de los problemas importantes para
nosotros en nuestra fe católica. Y hay una reunión "especial" importante
de la Comisión Social parroquial de la Justicia que sucederá el viernes,
29 de enero, a las 7 de la tarde en el salón grande de la Iglesia; esta
reunión para discutir éstos (y otros) asuntos de la justicia social católica en
la que nosotros como Ciudadanos católicos fieles hemos sido llamados a

CONTINUING FAITH FORMATION
Come explore the manner in which we are taught to pray during the Lent and Easter seasons. No
other season or feast throughout the year calls for deeper, more heartfelt prayer than this time of
the Church year. Lent calls us to pray as Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, offering
humble obedience to the will of the Father. And Easter season calls each of us to prayerfully consider how to fulfill one’s baptismal promise of discipleship.
Our next Generations of Faith gathering, Wednesday, Jan. 27th, 2010; 5:45-8:30pm
N.B.: Winter snows are always a possibility and God has a sense of humor! Our program will be
postponed to the next scheduled gathering date should bad weather intrude.

Hello everyone - I'm hoping that some of
you joined Father Bloom for the Pro-life
Mass at St. Michael Parish in Olympia this
last Tuesday, Jan. 19th, and marched with
him and others to the state capitol in the annual March
for Life. Other social justice - oriented activities are still
ahead. First, I will be leading whomever of you may
want to attend Catholic Advocacy Day in Olympia on
Feb. 9th - another opportunity to make our voice heard
by our representatives in Olympia re issues important
to us in our Catholic faith. Second, there is an important
"special" meeting of the parish Social Justice Commission
taking place on Friday, Jan. 29th, at 7pm in the church
hall; this meeting to discuss these (and other) issues of
Catholic social justice in which we as Catholic Faithful
Citizens have been asked to participate by our bishops
(one of these being a special nation-wide post card
campaign related to comprehensive immigration
reform. Please join Father and I in these important activities - he will be writing about them all in his upcoming weekly bulletin messages. God Bless.
