Enrique Granados’ long-lost masterpieces Cant de les Estrelles [Song of the
stars] and Escena Religiosa [Religious Scene] will be given their Australian
Premieres in the magnificent Verbrugghen Hall at the Sydney
Conservatorium of Music, on the 24th March 2015 at 7pm.
Sydney, NSW, Australia, January 22, 2015 -. Spanish-born concert pianist
Carolina Estrada presents Song of the Stars, an historical event featuring the
Australian Premiere of two masterworks by the Spanish composer Enrique
Granados: Cant de les Estrelles and Escena Religiosa. Cant de les Estrelles [Song
of the Stars], comparable to a virtuoso piano concerto with choir and organ
instead of orchestra, was lost for almost one hundred years and recently found
by the eminent American musicologist Walter Aaron Clark, director of the
Center for Iberian and Latin American Music at the University of California. The
Australian Premiere of Cant de les Estrelles will be performed by pianist Carolina
Estrada, organist Jim Abraham, the Manly-Warringah Choir, Coro Austral and
the Conservatorium High School Junior Vocal Stream under the direction of Dr.
Carlos Alvarado and the collaboration of Margot McLaughlin and Elisabeth
Vierboom. The work Escena religiosa originally composed for violin, organ and
piano is a conversation between an angel and the soul. This work was especially
written to be performed during a funeral, and on this occasion, on the
anniversary of the own composer’s death, the angel will be performed by the
12 years-old violinist Ariana Ricci, grand-daughter of the great violinist Ruggiero
Ricci.
Carolina Estrada is a visiting Doctor of Musical Arts candidate and Teaching
Assistant for the Open Academy program at the Sydney Conservatorium of
Music. This homage to one of most internationally recognized Spanish

composers is also part of another celebration, the Centenary of the Sydney
Conservatorium of Music.

Estreno Australiano de obras maestras del célebre compositor español Enrique
Granados: Cant de les Estrelles y Escena Religiosa, en el Verbrugghen Hall del
Conservatorio de Musica de Sydney, el dia 24 de Marzo de 2015, en el
Aniversario su muerte, a las 19 horas

the Stars, un concierto histórico en el que se podrá escuchar el estreno en
Australia de dos obras maestras de Enrique Granados: Cant de les Estrelles y
Escena Religiosa. Cant de les Estrelles, recientemente rescatada del olvido por
el eminente musicólogo americano Walter Aaron Clark, director del Centro de
Música Ibérica y Latino Americana en la Universidad de California, será
interpretada por primera vez en Australia por la pianista Carolina Estrada, el
organista Jim Abraham, los coros Manly-Warringah Choir, Coro Austral y The

obra maestra de la etapa de madurez del compositor español, fue estrenada

por él mismo en el Palau de la Música de Barcelona en Marzo de 1911. La
partitura de Cant de les Estrelles se creyó perdida en un incendio, y por esta
razón no pudo volverse a oír en las salas de conciertos hasta que el pianista
Douglas Riva ofreciera su estreno en Nueva York en Marzo de 2007. Cant de les
Estrelles es un poema para piano, órgano y 3 coros, con textos en catalán, sin
duda una obra maestra de la talla de su obra de madurez más
reconocida: Goyescas. En el concierto del día 24, también se podrá escuchar el
estreno de Escena Religiosa, obra para violín, piano y órgano. En esta obra se
debate un dialogo entre el alma y un ángel, la obra fue escrita expresamente
para un funeral y en esta ocasión, en el aniversario de la muerte de Granados,
será el ángel al violín, la voz de la inocencia interpretada por una artista invitada
muy especial, Ariana Ricci, de 12 años, nieta del gran violinista fallecido en

Granados perdió su vida dramáticamente en la catástrofe del Sussex, engullido

Carolina Estrada, pianist
Spanish concert pianist from Barcelona,

Estrada developed a particular passion
for the music of her native land when
she moved to live abroad after she
graduated with the highest degree given
in piano performance in Spain at the Conservatorium of Barcelona by the time she was 18 years old.
Her endeavours on behalf of Spanish music have been acknowledged by several governmental
institutions in different countries. The Spanish Ministry for Education and Culture, the Catalan
Government and the University of Barcelona Foundation Agustí Pere i Pons have actively sponsored
her Hispanic-themed investigations, gaining her Bachelor (2003) and Master of Music (2005) degrees
cum laude at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2005. In Holland, Carolina Estrada received the
Nuffic Scholarship from the Dutch Government for a year of specialization with legendary
pianist Laszlo Simon (former student of Claudio Arrau) at the Universität der Künste Udk Berlin.
From 2005 to 2009, Carolina Estrada served as piano lecturer at Reus Conservatorium of Music in
Spain and at the Sultan Qaboos University in Middle East. She is currently based in Sydney. Since
2012, the University of Sydney has honoured the pianist with two Faculty Merit Postgraduate Awards
to support her doctoral research: the prestigious George Henderson Award and the Katheleen &
Allison Short Scholarship. Carolina has also been awarded two Australian Postgraduate Research
Grants to present conference papers at the University of Melbourne (2012) and at the 15th
International Festival of Spanish Keyboard Music in Almeria (2014). Her investigation of Enrique
Granados’ piano works supervised by Bernadette Harvey and Natalia Ricci at the University of
Sydney, is a qualitative research project that involves interviews and masterclasses with the last living
students of Frank Marshall (Enrique Granados’ student) in Barcelona. Albert Attenelle and the
Marshall Academy professors Maria Teresa Monteys and Carlota Garriga, have shared treasured
knowledge passing on to her privileged insights to the musical legacy of the Catalan piano school.
A grant holder of numerous international awards and prizes, Carolina's career achieved major cultural
acclaim across Europe with The Grand Cross of the Most Illustrious Order of Humanitarian Merit and
The European Gold Cross bestowed by the Agrupación Española de Fomento Europeo – in
recognition of her valuable promotion of Hispanic Arts and Culture. Carolina actively contributes to
Australian cultural life and her activities to promote Spanish music in Australia are widely supported
by the Spanish Embassy, the Consulate General of Spain and the Cervantes Institute.

Dr Carlos Alvarado, conductor
Colombian born Carlos was appointed Musical Director of the
Manly-Warringah Choir in April 2003. Carlos started his musical
career as a pianist under Maestro Jorge Zorro, one of the leading
personalities in the Colombian Music Education System.Having
won a full scholarship from the Colombian Institute of Credit to
study in Russia, Carlos obtained his Doctorate of Opera and
Symphonic Conducting at the Tchaikovsky Conservatorium of
Music of Moscow where he studied under Gennady
Rozhdestvensky. He also undertook higher studies in choral
conducting, piano theory and voice technique, and was awarded a
Master of Fine Arts degree in choir conducting from the same
Conservatorium.
In 1990-92, he was invited by Professor Hellmuth Rilling and the
International Bach Academy of Stuttgart to take part as an Active
Conductor in various courses and festivals with the Bach
Collegium Orchestra and the Gachinnger Kantoire Choir in
Stuttgart (Germany), Moscow and Santiago de Compostela
(Spain).Carlos returned to Colombia after finishing his academic
studies. During this time he was guest conductor of the main Colombian orchestras, conducted
several groups, choirs and ensembles and taught conducting in most of the important universities in
Bogota, Colombia. At that time he took part in various international competitions in Brazil, Russia,
Spain and Italy.
Since his arrival to Australia in 2002, Carlos has been actively developing his musical career. In 2004
Carlos was Co-founder of the Wollongong Symphony Orchestra, an orchestra that became a
symbol of the cultural development in Wollongong and the Illawarra region (NSW) Australia. Many
Important Australian and International figures as James Morrison, Timothy Kain, Konstantin Shamray,
John Chen, Tatiana Kolosova, Alexandra Loukianova, Deborah De Graaff, Emma Moor and many
other soloists have been part of the programs conducted under Carlos Alvarado baton.
Carlos has founded a variety of choirs and music ensembles. The most recent being “Cantares”, a
new choral ensemble with members from the Shoalhaven, Illawarra and Wollongong areas. Carlos is
currently the Music Director of WIN Corporation Australia.

Jim Abraham, Organ
Jim Abraham was born in England and studied at
University in York, where he was Organ Scholar. He
had tuition from Philip Moore while studying and was
also Deputy Organist at Selby Abbey, with the late
Mervyn Byers. Jim moved to Guernsey in the Channel
Islands and accompanied many groups including the
Guernsey Girls Choir who won several National
competitions, toured around Europe and America and
appeared on national television.
He has been fortunate to play in many cathedral
including Westminster Abbey, York Minster, St. Paul’s
Cathedral, London and Orleans Cathedral, France. He
has given recitals throughout Sydney including St Andrew’s Cathedral.After arriving in Australia in
2001, Jim was appointed Head of Music at Loreto Normanhurst. He then moved to Our Lady of Mercy
College, Parramatta and then on to Pittwater House School, Collaroy as Organist and Co-ordinator of
the Creative Arts.
In 2012, he took up the position of Director of the Cathedral Singers.Jim is in much demand as a
performer, accompanist and adjudicator.
Ariana Ricci, Violin
Born in 2002, Ariana began Suzuki violin studies at the age of 4
with Haruo Goto and piano with her parents, both professional
pianists. In 2007, having just turned five, she was the youngest
student to date to receive a full scholarship at the Sydney
Conservatorium of Music’s Open Academy. She joined the Rising
Starts program in its inaugural year in 2008 and began studies with
Janet Davies. In 2009 she moved with her family to Auckland NZ for
a year where she studied violin with Elizabeth Holowell at the
University of Auckland.
Back in Sydney in 2010, she continued her studies with Evgeny
Sorkin iuntil 2013 in the Rising Star program at the Sydney
Conservatorium and also had occasional lessons with her
grandfather in the U.S, the world- renowned violinist Ruggiero Ricci.
She has given many solo performances in the concert halls of the
Sydney Conservatorium as part of the Rising Star program.
In 2009 she premiered a violin concerto written for her by David Banney with the Hunter Strings
Orchestra in Newcastle for which she wrote and performed her own cadenza. She was featured in an
ABC radio interview prior to the performance.
Ariana joined the Sydney Children’s Choir in 2010 and was accepted in to Senior Choir the following
year. She has given many performances with them in Angel Place and the Sydney Opera House (in
collaboration with the SSO) including Carmina Burana, Lord of the Rings, Britten’s War Requiem,
Heritage in Song, John Williams and Voices of Angels.
In 2013, Ariana toured Europe with the Senior Choir under the directorship of Lyn Williams singing in
venues such as Barcelona’s Palau de la Música, Notre Dame and Église de la Madeleine in Paris and

Westminister Abbey in London. In Barcelona she was a featured violin soloist in the first concert of the
SCC tour, playing several violin solos from the Spanish repertoire in a concert with the choir as part of
the Barcelona Festival of Song.
In October 2013 she was featured in the final concert of Encuentros Españoles, the Spanish Festival
of Music and Dance, held at the Sydney Conservatorium’s Verbrugghen Hall, playing Manuel de
Falla’s first Spanish Dance from La Vida Breve.
In April 2014 Ariana toured central Australia (NT) with the North Sydney Girls Orchestra as part of the
school’s 100th anniversary commemorative celebrations and was a featured soloist in Bach’s Double
Concerto under the baton of Stephen Hillinger.
Ariana was offered full music scholarships to attend MLC High School and PLC, Pymble but has
decided instead to accept an offer to study at the Conservatorium High School in 2015 where she is a
student of Professor Goetz Richter.
Margot McLaughlin, Artistic Director, Coro Austral
Margot McLaughlin has over 40 years' experience as a chorister,
choral trainer and conductor. She studied Music, Education and
Languages at the NSW Conservatorium of Music and Sydney
University; Psychology, Linguistics and Spanish at Macquarie
University; and Adult 2nd Language English Teaching at the
Australian TESOL Training Centre, Sydney. Margot was Musical
Director of Macquarie University Singers from 1987 to 2008, during
which time she developed the choir into a significant force in the
musical life of Sydney. She has also directed major concerts with
groups such as Sydney University Musical Society, Ku-Ring-Gai
Philharmonic Orchestra, and Sutherland Shire Choral Society, as well
as directing choirs in services at St Mary’s Cathedral and St
Stephen’s Macquarie Street. Margot has also been chorus master for
the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, Willoughby Symphony Choir,
Sydney Graduate Choir and Bel a Capella chamber choir, as well as
for the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra's AusPops series,
Intervarsity Choral Festivals and Sydney Sings Messiah in the Sydney Opera House.
During her career, Margot has worked with many accomplished professional, amateur and student
musicians, directing an extensive range of choral and instrumental works, including Brahms' German
Requiem, Handel's Messiah and Israel in Egypt, and works by Rossini, Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Faure,
Bernstein and Rutter, as well as conducting stage performances of Purcell's Dido and Aenaeus,
Gilbert & Sullivan operas, and contemporary Australian composer Richard Vella's The Last Supper.
She also prepared the Macquarie University Singers for performance on the soundtrack of the 1991
ABC-TV mini-series Brides of Christ and as backing chorus for ENZSO, the 1997 live revival concert
for the group Split Enz.
Margot’s current positions include Musical Director of both the Sydney Trade Union Choir and the
University of the Third Age (U3A) Choir in Chatswood, as well as being the Artistic Director of Coro
Austral since founding the group in 2010. Repertoire explored so far with Coro Austral includes
renaissance Spanish & Galego-Portuguese, choral tango, folk songs, jotas & habaneras from Spain,
sons & boleros from Cuba, Sephardic songs both ancient and modern, pieces in indigenous
languages, and contemporary works from everywhere, including from the Chilean “new song

movement”.
In 2011 Margot co-directed a performance of Chilean composer Luis Advis’ Cantata Santa Maria de
Iquique in the Addison Rd Community Centre, Marrickville. 2013 marked the 40th anniversary of
Chile’s military coup of 1973, commemorated on 8th September at an event organised by Chile: 40
Years On – Australia, at which Margot conducted the world premiere of a new work composed and
arranged by Hernan Flores, Cantata a Victor, based on the life and work of Victor Jara. Also in 2013,
Margot took a Combined Australian Unions Choir to Santiago de Cuba for the Festival Internacional
de Coros, where they performed, attended workshops, and participated in musical and cultural
exchanges, bringing back a wealth of new repertoire to present in Australia.
For the past 6 years or so, Margot’s passion has been to research and perform choral works of Iberia
and Latin America and she welcomes any opportunity to further her understanding and experience of
this music. This evening, she and the choir are delighted to be collaborating with Carolina Estrada
and Carlos Alvarado to present the Australian premiere of Enric Granados’ Cant de les estrelles.

The Choirs
The choir was formed in 1975 as the Warringah
Symphony Society, with the purpose of bringing
classical music to the Warringah Shire. It was initially
formed as an amateur orchestra, and later the
Warringah Symphony Choir was established to
complement it. When the orchestra disbanded in the
eighties the choir continued performing, funding its own
orchestra.
In 1998, the Committee changed the name to the
Manly-Warringah Choir and it was incorporated that
year.
The choir performs across the northern beaches, and occasionally at concerts elsewhere in NSW. Our
main venue is the beautiful Cardinal Cerretti Chapel at St Patrick’s Estate, Manly.
Coro Austral
Coro Austral is an auditioned chamber choir performing
works from the 13th to 21st centuries. Our repertoire is
drawn from the many countries and provinces of Iberia
and Latin America, including Renaissance Spain and
Portugal, Mexican Baroque, Brazilian classical, as well
as traditional and contemporary songs from Chile,
Argentina and the Caribbean. The ensemble was
established as El Coro in 2010 by Margot McLaughlin in
order to explore this incredibly rich and varied music,
much of which is still largely unknown in Australia.
We’ve performed at Wollongong’s Viva la Gong Festival, the Blackheath Choir Festival, the Addison
Road Community Centre and the Casa Latinoamericana in Marrickville, the Moorambilla Festival in
Coonamble, the Australian Jewish Choral Festival and the Instituto Cervantes. We have also given
concerts at St Luke’s Anglican Church Enmore, the St Johns Centre, Glebe, the South Sydney Uniting
Church in Waterloo, the Camelot Lounge in Marrickville and the Glebe Justice Centre.
Some of our members travelled with Margot and the Australian Union Choir to the Festival
Internacional de Coros in Santiago de Cuba in November 2013.

Description of some of the works that will be performed
*AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE OF SONG OF THE STARS (CANT DE LES ESTRELLES)
Piano, Organ and Choirs
Cant de les Estrelles1, subtitled as Poem for piano, organ and voices (Poema para
piano, órgano y voces), is inspired a poem by Heine2, referring to the romantic poet Heinrich
Heine (1797-1856). The piece is described as “fully spiritual music”3. This work was lost and
found recently by the eminent American musicologist Walter Aaron Clark, who I personally
know and with whom I had the great pleasure to converse during conferences and festivals
in Melbourne (2012) and Barcelona (2014). Last June, Walter Clark explained to me with
excitement the very moment he found the original score of Cant de les Estrelles. Thanks to
that moment, today we can have access to this masterwork.
“Without any doubt Cant de les Estrelles is a master work, one of the best Granados
compositions. This piece is written within the Romantic-modernist style with post-Wagnerian
harmonies and without any trace of nationalism. Cant de les Estrelles is comparable to a
piano concerto but with choir and organ instead of orchestra. Also it has the distinction of
being one of the longest works by Granados, almost 18 minutes”.4

Whether the poem is authored by Heine or not is still a mystery, since there is no poem by him that could be

Escena religiosa, was originally composed for violin, organ and piano, it is dedicated to the
“Memory of my beloved Doña Cecilia”5, wife of Eduardo Conde, donor of Granados. It was a
work especially written to be performed during her funeral.

EL CANT DELS OCELLS, choir
Popular Catalan Christmas Song from the 17th century which Pau Casals used to play as an
encore after his concerts during the years that he was in exile. This beautiful melody was
for Casals a symbol of love and nostalgia for his land. He brought it all around the world. El
Cant dels Ocells is a symbol of peace and freedom in the world and in Catalonia a hymn of
peace and hope.
