TAEKWONDO TEMARIO GENERAL DE ESTUDIO CLUB DEPORTIVO ILYEO-KWAN Glosario de Tae Kwon Do ITF - WTF On Korea and Tae Kwon Do Why We Call It "Korea" At the beginning of the Christian Era, the kingdom of "Goguryeo" (高句麗 / 고구려) controlled most of what is now northern Korea. In the 660s, Goguryeo was conquered by the kingdom of "Silla" (新羅 / 신라), which thus became the first kingdom to control most of the peninsula. Then, around the 930s, the new kingdom of "Goryeo" (高麗 / 고려) conquered Silla. It was this kingdom that was mentioned in The Travels of Marco Polo as "Cauli", perhaps from the Mandarin Chinese pronounciation, "Gaoli". Cauli, in turn, derived into "Corea". And finally, "Korea", as we spell it today, came into common use at the turn of the 20th century. What Korea Calls Itself The traditional name for the northern region of Korea is "Joseon" (朝鮮 / 조선), meaning "Land of the Morning Calm". This refers to the dynasty of the same name, which lasted from 1392 to 1910, when Japan officially annexed Korea. The southern region, on the other hand, has always called itself "Han" (韓 / 한). After Japan was defeated in 1945, Korea was split into the two countries we know today: the Communist North and the Republican South. The North Koreans continue to use "Joseon" to refer to Korea as a whole, calling the north "Bukjoseon" (北朝鮮 / 북조선) and the south "Namjoseon" (南朝鮮 / 남조선). The South Koreans, meanwhile, call the whole country "Hanguk" (韓國 / 한국), so that the north is "Bukhan" (北韓 / 북한) and De Corea y el Tae Kwon Do Por qué la llamamos "Corea" A principios de la Era Cristiana, el reino de "Goguryeo" (高句麗 / 고구려) controlaba la mayoría de lo que ahora es el norte de Corea. TAEKWONDO TEMARIO GENERAL DE ESTUDIO CLUB DEPORTIVO ILYEO-KWAN the south "Namhan" (南韓 / 남한). The South Korean Flag The South Korean flag is called the "Taegukgi" (太極旗 / 태국기) and was originally adopted in August, 1882, not long after the "Hermit Kingdom" opened its front and back doors to foreign aggressive powers. This same flag was later adopted by South Korea, on 25 January, 1950. The central theme of the flag is that although there is constant movement within the sphere of infinity, there is also balance and harmony. The flag consists of three parts: a white field; a red and blue circle (at the center); and four black trigrams (one at each corner). The white background color in this very philosophical flag represents the land, purity, and peace-loving spirit of the Korean peple. The circle in the center, which gives the flag its name, is called "taeguk" (太極 / 태국) - the Great Extremes - and means the origin of all things in the universe. The red and blue paisleys within the circle represent eternal duality (heaven-earth, fire-water, good-evil, male-female, dark-light, life-death). The blue portion is called "eum" (陰 / 음) and represents the negative aspects of this duality; the red portion is called "yang" (陽 / 양) and represents the positive aspects. As you may have guessed, "eum-yang" is the Korean equivalent of "yin-yang". Trigram Name Represents 乾 / 건 "geon" heaven, east, and spring 坎 / 감 "gam" water, north, and winter 坤 / 곤 "gon" earth, west, and summer 離 / 리 "ri" fire, south, and autumn The four black trigrams come from the Book of Changes by Confucius, one of the Five Classics of Chinese literature. The trigrams, or "gwae" (卦 / 괘), continue to carry the idea of opposites and of balance. Each one consists of three parallel lines, some broken, some unbroken. Each also has a specific name and represents one or more concepts. (See table.) Tae Kwon Do and South Korea Why does Tae Kwon Do use the flag of South Korea? Why not the flag of North Korea or the Unification flag? Well, the main reason would be La Bandera Surcoreana La bandera surcoreana se llama "Taegukgi" (太極旗 / 태국기) y fue adoptada en agosto de 1882, poco después de que el "Reino Hermita" abriese sus puertas delantera y trasera a las agresivas fuerzas extranjeras. (Ver tabla.) El Tae Kwon Do y Corea del Sur ¿Por qué es que en Tae Kwon Do se usa la bandera surcoreana? ¿Por qué no la de Corea del TAEKWONDO TEMARIO GENERAL DE ESTUDIO CLUB DEPORTIVO ILYEO-KWAN because South Korea is the only Korea which has declared Tae Kwon Do its National Sport. The official declaration was made in 1971, by then President Bak Jeong-hui However, the first unofficial declaration was made six years earlier, in 1965, during a good will trip by then South Korea's Ambassador, the retired Major General Choi Hong-hui "The General", as he is affectionately remembered, played a very important role in making Tae Kwon Do what it is today. On 11 April, 1955, the special board which had convened to decide on a unified name for this art decided to choose the name he had submitted. Further, it is known that he made attempts to introduce Tae Kwon Do to the North, where the Communist regime considered the private practice of the martial arts "subversive". This position made it nearly impossible for any of these arts to survive in that country. However, that's not to say it was completely impossible. Thanks to the efforts of the General and his son, and of the more reasonable members of the government, North Korea still has Tae Kwon Do, through the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF). South Korea, on the other hand, has the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF). (There is also a third party, known as the GTF, or Global Taekwon-Do Federation, which tries to bridge the gap between the ITF and the WTF.) The self-defense aspect is pretty much the same between the two. Terminology varies slightly: ITF patterns are "teul" (틀), WTF patterns are "pumsae" (품새); sparring is "matseogi" (맛서기), not "gyorugi" (겨루기); and breaking is "wiryeok" (위력), not "gyeokpa" (격파). The rest of the techniques have pretty much the same names. The main difference is in the sparring. North Korean Tae Kwon Do emphasizes strong destructive power that can be adapted to actual fights. South Korean Tae Kwon Do puts more emphasis on the sports aspect of the art. Sparring is divided into two categories, namely, promised or "yaksok" (약속), and free or "jayu" (자유). Fights may also involve more than two people. Rounds are two, lasting two minutes, rather than the three three-minute rounds used in South Korea. Weight categories are divided into only five for men and women, respectively, rather than eight. And lastly - and most notably - competitors get to wear gloves and shoes without a trunk protector, and they are allowed to hit the face with the fist during sparring, which makes for a wild and exciting contest. Definition of Tae Kwon Do "Tae Kwon Do" (跆拳道 / 태권도) is composed of three words: "tae" (跆 / 태), which means "foot" or "to strike with the feet"; "kwon" (拳 / 권), which means "hand", or "to strike with the hand"; and "do" (道 / 도), which means "road", "way", "discipline", or "art". So Tae Kwon Do means literally "the art of the feet and the Norte o la bandera de la unificación? Por lo tanto, Tae Kwon Do significa literalmente "el arte de pies y TAEKWONDO TEMARIO GENERAL DE ESTUDIO CLUB DEPORTIVO ILYEO-KWAN hands" or "the art of kicking and punching". However, different schools and styles may impose different variations on the formal definition. For example, some styles add the words "self defense" to the literal definition or throw in some form of the phrase "physical and mental training". manos" o "el arte de patear y pegar".
