CONFERENCIA PRINCIPAL
The Face of Mercy / El Rostro de la Misericordia
DEACON ALEX JONES
Deacon Jones graduated from Wayne State University in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in
Art Education, and received a master’s degree in Pastoral Studies from Sacred Heart Major
Seminary. He taught in the Detroit school system for twenty-eight years.
For 25 years, he was the senior minister of two churches in the city of Detroit: Zion
Congregational Church of God in Christ, the second oldest Pentecostal church in Michigan,
and Maranatha Christian Church, an Evangelical/Charismatic church. In March of 1998,
while reading the apostolic fathers and subsequent church history, he discovered the
Church to be charismatic/liturgical, hierarchical, and Eucharistic-centered. In light of that
discovery, he and his wife, Donna, began a two-year journey into the Catholic Church that
culminated in 54 members of his previous congregation, including 14 members of his
family, entering the Catholic Church. They entered the R.C.I.A. process and were welcomed
into the Catholic Church in April of 2001.
Deacon Jones was ordained a Permanent Deacon in the Archdiocese of Detroit on October 1, 2005. He has since retired
from the positions as evangelization coordinator for the Archdiocese of Detroit and as a Pastoral Associate.
He is also the author of No Price too High! - a book chronicling his journey into the Church.

Fostering Vocations:
A Spiritual Act of Mercy
By the traditional Acts of Mercy we put our
faith into action and proclaim the Gospel in deeds. In
our role of fostering vocations to priesthood,
religious life, the diaconate, holy matrimony and lay
leadership we have the potential to touch the lives of
thousands of people. Each person we assist to
respond to God's call can become an instrument of
the Love of God in this world. We will focus on how to
assist people in discerning their call. This is a
workshop for parents, catechists and clergy together.

Evangelizing the Merciless World of Parenting
The world of a parent is filled with mandatory meetings, can’t miss tournaments, and obligatory
participation. When faith formation becomes another priority to be met it only adds to the already
merciless world of parenting. In this workshop we will develop ways to serve families where they are and

replace them with moments of lifelong faith formation in service of the family, we
become the face of mercy in the merciless world of parenting.

Cultivating a Liturgical
Spirituality
For centuries Catholics have lived out their
faith through the cycles and seasons of the Church
year. A spirituality rooted in the Church year and its
liturgies is essential for liturgical ministers and
catechists. This presentation will explore the
foundations of the liturgical spirituality and how to
make that part of your catechetical and ministry
training programs.

Challenges to
Evangelization in
Africa Today
The African continent in the last hundred years has
witnessed a rapid increase in Christianity. The
Catholic population alone has grown by 238 percent
since 1980 from 18 million to over 200 million.
There are projections that by the year 2025 one-sixth
of the world’s Catholics will be African. However, the
surge in Islamic militancy in various parts of Africa,
especially the “Boko Haram” (a radical Islamic group
from Northeastern Nigeria), has posed a severe
challenge to Christian evangelization throughout the
continent.

The Hierarchy of Love:
A More Excellent Way
Part of our growth means to pay attention
to what is vital, secondary and trivial for our lives. St.
Augustine would say: “In essentials, unity; in nonessentials, liberty; in all things, charity.” Such charity
(read “love”) is the essence of life. Though we are
born with the seed of love, we must cultivate it to
learn how to love. Part of such learning requires us
to let go of those things that may be trivial. In this
workshop we will explore: (1) what we have gathered
throughout our faith journey; (2) discern the
essential from the trivial; (3) reflect on concrete
steps that may help us to live according to the
hierarchy of love.

Congregational Church of God in Christ,
the second oldest Pentecostal church in Michigan, and Maranatha
Christian Church, an Evangelical/Charismatic church. In March of
1998, while reading the apostolic fathers and subsequent church
history, he discovered the Church to be charismatic/liturgical,
hierarchical, and Eucharistic-centered. In light of that discovery, he
and his wife, Donna, began a two-year journey into the Catholic
Church that culminated in 54 members of his previous
congregation, including 14 members of his family, entering the
Catholic Church. They entered the R.C.I.A. process and were

Witnessing God's Mercy
through Addiction Recovery
In some way or another, we all suffer from
addiction. The lies that we tell others and ourselves
can make us oblivious to what is really keeping us
from experiencing full communion with God. Scott
discusses the various ways that addiction takes root
in our lives and offers his own experience around
alcoholism and addiction to show that freedom is
available to all through the gift of God’s mercy.
SCOTT WEEMAN
Scott Weeman was raised in Wisconsin
and attended college in New York City. At
this point, his experience around drugs
and alcohol started to spin out of control.
After a series of unconventional events,
he found himself seeking the mercy of the
Lord at age 26. Scott attributes this
reconversion to a very strong Catholic
community in San Diego where he lives. In addition, the
experience, strength, and hope shared in recovery groups helps
him stay sober from alcohol and drugs (one day at a time).
Scott is at a point where he is passionate about bringing the Good
News to people who struggle to find healing from alcoholism and
addictions. He founded a nonprofit organization, Catholic in
Recovery. The organization also helps people from all walks of life
strengthen their personal relationship with Jesus Christ through
practical application of the principles of the twelve steps. His first
book will be published by Ave Maria Press in the fall of 2017.
Having been blessed with God’s mercy through both recovery and
the sacramental life of the Catholic Church, he seeks to share the
consistent message of hope found in merging these two life-giving
graces.

Mother of Jesus, is not only an image of the Church
but how she is a model for a life of discipleship for all
Christians. Looking at the life of Mary in Scripture
and reflecting on the Church's teachings about Mary,
participants will come to see Mary's importance for
each of us today.

God’s Response...
When faced with
the gravity of sin,
God responds with
the fullness of mercy.
Mercy will always
be greater than any sin,
and no one can place
limits on the love of God
who is ever ready to forgive.

Marriage:
A Sacrament of Mercy
The sacrament of marriage is a vehicle of
grace for the spouses, to bring them closer to God,
as well as each other.
This presentation will reflect on how marriage is a
vehicle of mercy – of healing and reconciliation –
drawing on insights from the writings of Pope
Francis, Pope Benedict XVI, and Saint John Paul II
(particularly his catechesis on the Theology of the
Body). We will also look at ways parishes can offer
support to marriages and married couples, both
before and after the wedding, in light of the two
recent Synods on the Family, and Pope Francis’
apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia.
In liturgy, the faithful are called to full,
active, and conscious participation. What are new
ways we can help our assemblies do this? In this
workshop, Mel will explore the concept of liturgical
media art developed through a "communal cocreation" process. This topic which was the basis of
Mel's Capstone Project/Thesis paper is an up and
coming concept in Catholic worship. Participants will
learn the basic ideas and insights and actually
experience liturgical prayer using this medium.
A great presentation for liturgy planners, R.C.I.A.
coordinators, and youth leaders.

Missionary Disciple,
Proclaim God's
Loving Mercy!
Pope Francis opened the Year of Mercy and reminds
us that Mercy is “a wellspring of joy, serenity, and
peace; the fundamental law that dwells in the heart
of every person who looks sincerely into the eyes of
his brothers and sisters on the path of life”. In
response to the call of Pope Francis, we will share
some stories of Jesus’ mercy encounters and how we
can apply them in: our daily life, our homes, work,
community, parishes and wherever we might
encounter others.

Communicating with the
Sacred: 10 Creative Ways
to Use Signs and Symbols
in Catechesis
Catechesis gives the opportunity to form faith in
many interesting and creative ways. Unfortunately,
most catechists only use verbal and linguistic ways
to communicate the faith. The language of
catechesis should be filled with many symbols and
signs that are a part of our Catholic tradition. In this
workshop, we will take a look at how popular
religiosity can be used in catechesis to bring out the
fullness of our faith. Practical, hands-on activities will
be discussed and shared that will be ready to use in
your faith formation program.

Aunque todavía no tenemos muchas respuestas

anterioridad y traerlo a nuestra sesión!
JIM GRANT

Caja y Desconectada
¿Sin Internet? ¡No hay problema! La
Tecnología es genial pero algunas veces
simplemente no tenemos acceso a ella.

Dios. En este taller aprenderás nuevos ritmos que
aplicaremos a cánticos ya conocidos, nuevos
innovadores arreglos a himnos tradicionales y

decía San Agustín “en lo esencial, unidad; en lo dudoso, libertad;

Becoming Mercy Discipleship and Service
This workshop challenges teenagers to
become voices and hands of mercy in their world. As
our world becomes increasingly fragmented, divided,
and digitized it can be hard to empathize and love
others. As we receive mercy, we are called to give it.
Teenagers are challenged to see service as an act of
mercy, forgiveness as an act of mercy, and charity as
an act of mercy - all of which happen in big and small
ways every single day. Practical examples will be
given of how to live this out most effectively and
impact fully.
JOEL STEPANEK
Joel Stepanek has been actively and
passionately involved in ministry for over
ten years. Joel is the Director of Resource
Development for Life Teen International
where he creates engaging youth ministry
resources for middle and high school
students. He received his master’s degree
in religious education with an emphasis in
youth and young adult ministry from
Fordham University. Joel loves spending
time with his wife and two children, Elijah
Daniel and Sophia Grace.

Mercy, Mass and Music:
Let's talk about it!
God reveals his face of mercy in the Mass.
In the holy sacrifice of the altar, Christ is present in
the Eucharist. As Catholics, we believe in the true
presence and we celebrate the Mass knowing it is
the perfect prayer. Come and discover how mercy
and the Mass can include contemporary ensembles
and music, in a way that allow us to bring our gifts of
song and worship without losing the traditions of the
liturgy.

The True Meaning
of Marriage
In this workshop John and Nichole will
discuss the true meaning of marriage contrasting the
worldly view of marriage and the teaching of the
Church. They will discuss what makes marriage a
sacrament, the roles of husband and wife and why
it's critical each live them out fully, the keys to a
successful marriage, what to avoid and how to live a
marriage that witnesses to the world of something
greater than what is seen in society.
JOHN AND NICHOLE SABLAN
John and Nichole Sablan are two of the
founding members of the Catholic
Apostolate World Ablaze, which helps
facilitate encounters with Jesus Christ
and make disciples. John and Nichole
have a powerful testimony on the many
struggles they endured as individuals and
how that spilled into their marriage and
family life and the healing they
experienced as they grew in their faith
and understanding of marriage in light of
the Church and her teachings. Leveraging their ministry
background, Nichole's work as a school psychologist and counselor
and their own 21 years of marriage and family life, the Sablans
bring Church teaching, theory, application and humor to their
sessions guaranteed to help their audience leave with a greater
understanding of marriage and tools to live a happier and holier
marriage. Their greatest joys outside of their faith and marriage are
their three precious children Brya, Keoni and Miko.
We invite Young Adults (over the age of 18) to join us
in their very own sessions. They will be offered at the
same time as our Congress sessions!

#EpicFail: Abstinence Edition
The pleasures of sin are for a season, the stain however can be life altering! Gina Felter shares her
story of becoming a mom at the age of 16 and delves into overcoming the stigma of a presumed
#epicfail. Sharing experiences of the prevailing mercy being shown through the Church,
Gina believes that it is by God's grace that she endured the challenging circumstances
of teen pregnancy and has come to know cleansing and forgiveness from sin.
GINA FELTER
Gina Felter is a contributor for catholicmom.com writing on faith, technology and New Evangelization topics.
Gina has been involved in religious education ministry for more than 20 years as a Catechist, Director of

Mercy, Mass and Music: Let's talk about it!
God reveals his face of mercy in the Mass. In the holy sacrifice of the altar, Christ is present in the
Eucharist. As Catholics, we believe in the true presence and we celebrate the Mass knowing it is
the perfect prayer. Come and discover how mercy and the Mass can include contemporary ensembles and
music, in a way that allow us to bring our gifts of song and worship without losing the traditions of the liturgy.

C
Overcoming Adversities: The Power of Forgiveness!
Everyone has experienced some kind of trauma and/or misfortune, but how someone handles it is
another category. It is common for today's society to be trapped in this paradigm for instance; how
to react to somebody's rudeness is to retaliate and have revenge. It is common to hold in our minds anger,
hatred, jealously, and envy; this is the opposite of what God wants us to hold onto. God wants us to forgive,
just as He forgave us. This workshop will have inspirational words of encouragement and plant a seed into
hearts and minds: "The Power of Forgiveness!"
CLAUDE BALL
Claude Ball was born in Detroit, Michigan, and was raised in poverty and lived in a perilous environment. He
encountered many setbacks, including living in an orphanage and foster homes. Claude became so depressed
and undisciplined that he started experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Claude hit rock bottom and started
building a relationship with Jesus Christ. He prayed every single day and started going to church every Sunday.
Claude took responsibility of his life and joined the United States Navy. He met his wife, Leticia, who enabled
him in becoming Catholic in 2007.
Mr. Ball recently graduated from the University of Phoenix with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Claude is
now an aspiring motivational speaker and author.
D
Mercy: God's Steadfast Love
God's love is limitless, faithful and true. We can't earn it, buy it or lose it.
Through Jesus Christ, this love is made visible by his life, death and
resurrection.

Becoming Mercy - Discipleship and Service
This workshop challenges teenagers to become voices and hands of mercy in their world. As our
world becomes increasingly fragmented, divided, and digitized it can be hard to empathize and
love others. As we receive mercy, we are called to give it. Teenagers are challenged to see service as an act
of mercy, forgiveness as an act of mercy, and charity as an act of mercy - all of which happen in big and
small ways every single day. Practical examples will be given of how to live this out most effectively and
impact fully.
JOEL STEPANEK
See biography for Joel Stepanek, Keynote Speaker, on page 51.

The True Meaning of Marriage
In this workshop John and Nichole will discuss the true meaning of marriage contrasting the worldly
view of marriage and the teaching of the Church. They will discuss what makes marriage a
sacrament, the roles of husband and wife and why it's critical each live them out fully, the keys to a
successful marriage, what to avoid and how to live a marriage that witnesses to the world of something
greater than what is seen in society.
JOHN AND NICHOLE SABLAN
John and Nichole Sablan are two of the founding members of the Catholic Apostolate World Ablaze, which
helps facilitate encounters with Jesus Christ and make disciples. John and Nichole have a powerful testimony
on the many struggles they endured as individuals and how that spilled into their marriage and family life and
the healing they experienced as they grew in their faith and understanding of marriage in light of the Church
and her teachings. Leveraging their ministry background, Nichole's work as a school psychologist and
counselor and their own 21 years of marriage and family life, the Sablans bring Church teaching, theory,
application and humor to their sessions guaranteed to help their audience leave with a greater understanding
of marriage and tools to live a happier and holier marriage. Their greatest joys outside of their faith and
marriage are their three precious children Brya, Keoni and Miko.
