Dear Friends and Parishioners,
The reason why I came to the United States is to study and learn.
I was sent by my superior here, hoping that after several years I
will one day return home equipped with the right knowledge and
skills to help in the formation of our future priests. Leaving my
country, the Philippines, was a tough decision. Fear arising from
the unknown gripped me, uncertain of what life would be like in
a faraway land. Nevertheless, I took the challenge because I always believe God is leading me somewhere somehow. My trust
in God is what has kept me courageous through the years. I can
honestly say that things have gotten better and my faith has
grown stronger because of the many personal encounters I have
had with people from different walks of life.
La razón por la que vine a los Estados Unidos es estudiar y
aprender. Fui enviado por mi superior aquí, con la esperanza de
que después de varios años voy de vuelta a casa equipado con
los conocimientos y habilidades para ayudar en la formación de
nuestros futuros sacerdotes. Dejando mi país, las Filipinas, fue
una decisión difícil. El miedo que surge de lo desconocido se
apoderó de mí, sin saber de lo que sería la vida en una tierra
lejana. Sin embargo, tomé el reto porque siempre creo que Dios
me está guiando en alguna parte de alguna manera. Mi confianza
en Dios es lo que me ha mantenido valiente través de los años.
Honestamente puedo decir que las cosas han mejorado y mi fe se
ha fortalecido debido a los muchos encuentros personales que he
tenido con personas de diferentes ámbitos de la vida.
I never thought of working in a parish like St. Stephen Church.
When I was invited to help out in this parish, I did not think
twice. After all, studying and ministering as a priest can complement each other. As such, choosing to come here was one of the
best decisions I have ever made. I am now in my last year, and
soon will earn what I came for, a doctoral degree in Psychology.
I thought I will only bring home a piece of paper as evidence of
my hard work. To my surprise, I got more – something more
precious than an overrated diploma. I will be bringing with me
some wonderful memories that will surely inspire and motivate
me to continue serving God.
Nunca pensé en trabajar en una parroquia como Iglesia de San
Esteban. Cuando me invitaron a ayudar en esta parroquia, yo no
lo pensé dos veces. Después de todo, el estudio y ministrar como
sacerdote puede complementarse entre sí. Como tal, la elección
de venir aquí fue una de las mejores decisiones que he tomado.
Ahora estoy en mi último año, y pronto voy a ganar lo que vine
a buscar, un título de doctorado en Psicología. Pensé que sólo
voy a traer a casa un pedazo de papel como prueba de mi trabajo
duro. Para mi sorpresa, me dieron más - algo más precioso que
un diploma sobrevalorado. Traeré conmigo algunos recuerdos
maravillosos que seguramente va a inspirar y motivar a mí para
continuar sirviendo a Dios.
I have learned to love our parish, my community away from
home. I may not know everybody who comes to our church, but
just knowing even a handful of parishioners who are growing in
their love for Christ is more than enough for me to be grateful. If
there is anything I would like to do more, it is to evangelize
more. I am a priest. A Vincentian priest. A missionary priest.
That is my true calling. My identity demands that I proclaim
Christ's Good News to his people.
I am counting my days in the United States. I know it will be
hard for me to leave. But now it is even much harder because
our parish is undergoing difficult challenges with the closing of
our school. It pains me to see many hearts broken, relationships
strained, and families abandoning the parish because of this unfortunate event. It is during this time when I ask myself whether
I have done enough. I know I planted the seed of God's word in
the hearts of the people, but now I am not sure if I have nurtured
it enough in order for it to take root and grow.
Today, God is testing my faith. The temptation to blame myself
is there, and I have to admit that it is affecting me. Was I able to
teach and show how to live Christ’s love? Maybe I have not
done enough. It is during these trying moments where I should
muster enough strength to once again trust in God. I should not
forget that I am only God's instrument and the work of evangelization is not my sole undertaking. Yes, I am called to evangelize, but in doing so, I must trust in the Holy Spirit who will lead
us back to Christ.

He aprendido a amar a nuestra parroquia, mi comunidad fuera de
casa. Puede que no sepa todo el mundo que viene a nuestra iglesia, pero el hecho de saber incluso un puñado de feligreses que
están creciendo en el amor a Cristo es más que suficiente para
mí estar agradecidos. Si hay algo que me gustaría hacer más, que
es evangelizar más. Yo soy un sacerdote. Un sacerdote vicentino. Un sacerdote misionero. Esa es mi verdadera vocación. Mi
identidad exige que proclamo Buena Nueva de Cristo a su pueblo.
Cuento mis días en los Estados Unidos. Sé que va a ser difícil
para mí dejar. Pero ahora es aún mucho más difícil porque nuestra parroquia está experimentando desafíos difíciles con el cierre
de nuestra escuela. Me duele ver a muchos corazones rotos, relaciones tensas, y las familias que abandonan la parroquia a causa
de este lamentable suceso. Es durante este tiempo cuando me
pregunto si he hecho lo suficiente. Sé que he plantado la semilla
de la Palabra de Dios en los corazones de la gente, pero ahora no
estoy seguro de si he alimentado lo suficiente a fin de que eche
raíces y crezca.
Hoy, Dios está poniendo a prueba mi fe. La tentación de culpar a
mí mismo está ahí, y tengo que admitir que me está afectando.
Tuve la oportunidad de enseñar y mostrar cómo vivir el amor de
Cristo? Tal vez yo no he hecho lo suficiente. Es durante estos
momentos difíciles donde debería reunir la fuerza suficiente para
confiar una vez más en Dios. No hay que olvidar que no soy más
que un instrumento de Dios y la obra de la evangelización no es
mi único compromiso. Sí, estoy llamado a evangelizar, pero al
hacerlo, tengo que confiar en el Espíritu Santo, que nos llevará
de nuevo a Cristo.

My name is Kathy Thomas. I have been participating in the
parish Transformation Workshop. During my forty-three
years in the parish I have been part of other workshops, but
none like this ne. We are young and old, male and female, all
shapes, sizes and colors. Our purpose is to help form a strong
solid direction for the future of the parish. We share our faith
and life experiences, hopes, dreams and visions. We pray,
laugh, cry, argue. I do not know if we can realize all our
goals, but what a joyful noise we are making as we try.
