Are you ready for an exciting Migrant Summer Program?
We know we are! This year the Title I Migrant Education
Program of Hillsborough County will venture into the world
of STEM with Camp Invention.
Elementary and middle school programs will be doing Camp
Invention: a STEM program focusing on developing students
natural curiosity through hands-on creative problem solving
activities.
Our High School students will have an opportunity to work with their current PASS Program
courses, start a PASS Program class or any other skill recommended by the students’ Guidance
Counselor and/or Migrant Advocate.

My name is Marcela Resendez and I have worked for the past 20 years for
Bay Area Legal Services in Plant City. My family came to the United States
when I was five years old. At that time, my parents were migrant workers and
traveled to other states in search of agricultural work. It was difficult for my
brothers and me because during the same school year we attended several
schools. It was not easy to get used to new schools and to make new friends.
Dover Elementary School was our first school in Florida. I remember
attending a self-contained classroom in which we all learned English as a
second language. In 1986 I graduated from high school and continued traveling
with my family to other states in search of agricultural work until the day I got
married. My husband and I have four children. I always had the desire to go
back to school. When our youngest son turned 6 years old, I enrolled back in
school. During that time I worked full time, went to school and took care of my
home and my family. It was tough but not impossible. When you set your mind
to achieve something, you become stronger and you are able to achieve your goals.
In 2007, I graduated with honors from Hillsborough Community College. In January 2008, I enrolled at
University of South Florida and graduated in December 2009. After my graduation, I was promoted in my
job as a manager for cases of domestic violence.
One of the main reasons I decided to return to school was to study a career to show my children that
everything in life can be achieved regardless of the type of work we do. Education is not impossible. I
encourage you to further your education because it is the key to success.
Mi nombre es Marcela Resendez y he trabajado durante los pasados 20 años para Bay Area Legal
Services en Plant City. Mi familia llegó a Estados Unidos cuando tenía cinco años de edad. En ese
momento, mis padres eran trabajadores migrantes y viajaban a otros estados en busca de trabajo agrícola.
Fue difícil para mis hermanos y para mí ya que durante el mismo año escolar asistíamos a varias escuelas.
No fue fácil acostumbrarse a las nuevas escuelas y hacer nuevos amigos.
La Escuela Primaria Dover fue nuestra primera escuela en Florida. Recuerdo haber asistido a un aula en
la cual todos aprendíamos Inglés como segunda lengua. En 1986 me gradué de la escuela superior y
continué viajando con mi familia a otros estados en busca de trabajo agrícola hasta el día en que me casé.
Mi esposo y yo tenemos cuatro hijos. Siempre tuve el deseo de volver a la escuela. Por eso, cuando
nuestro hijo menor cumplió 6 años de edad me registré en la escuela nuevamente. En ese entonces yo
trabajaba a tiempo completo, asistía a la escuela y cuidaba de mi casa y mi familia. Fue difícil, pero no
imposible. Cuando uno se propone algo, te vuelves más fuerte y eres capaz de alcanzar tus metas.
En 2007, me gradué con honores de Hillsborough Community College. En enero de 2008 me inscribí en
la Universidad del Sur de Florida y me gradué en diciembre del 2009. Después de mi graduación, me
ascendieron en mi trabajo a Gerente de casos de violencia doméstica.
Una de las razones principales por las que decidí regresar a la escuela a estudiar una carrera fue para
demostrarles a mis hijos que todo en la vida se puede lograr sin importar el tipo de trabajo que hacemos. La
educación no es imposible, les animo a que continúen su educación, ya que es la clave para el éxito.

Who Is Your Children’s Potter?
For millenniums, society has depended on the potter to transform clay into much needed items, like cups, plates,
storage jars and decorative vases. Parents, too, make an invaluable contribution to society by shaping like a
beautiful piece of pottery, the character and personality of their children. Don’t leave your child’s transformation
to chance! Potters prefer to use the clay within six months of being refined, to make sure it is sufficiently
malleable to mold into shape, yet firm enough to hold the shape once it has been formed. Likewise, the best time
for parents to begin molding their children is in their first year of life. How? By instilling in your children a love
for reading and studying. Few endeavors have greater potential for shaping your children’s future than teaching
them to read and study. So how can you nurture in your children a thirst for learning?
1. Set the example. Kids naturally imitate their parents. Beyond mimicking sounds, expressions and
gestures, they learn a love for reading and studying. But how can you as a parent set such an example if
reading does not come easily to you? It may mean adjusting your priorities or your attitude toward
reading. If reading is a prominent part of your daily routine, this will speak to the heart of your children
and they will view it as a natural part of their own lives.
2. Make good books available to them. Many times the potter adds water to the clay to keep it moist and
malleable. Books are like the water that will prevent your children from becoming unyielding. Just like
eating, reading must be done selectively. You must spend time and effort to offer your children food
that will nourish them. In like manner, provide them with books that will nourish their brain. The
library is like an endless buffet of information. Don’t forget to take your kids to the library often,
especially during the summer.
In ancient Greece, many vases bore the signatures of both the potter and the decorator. Comparably, in the
family there are two who share in molding the children. Figuratively, both the father and the mother can stamp
their signature by instilling in their children a love for reading and studying. Some of the positive benefits will
be success in school, in work, in human relations, in understanding the world we live in and in forging closer
bonds of love between the families. If as parents you do your best at following these suggestions you will end
up feeling like a successful potter: proud of your work in shaping a young person of worth and inner beauty.

¿Quién es el alfarero de sus hijos?
Los alfareros fueron figuras claves en la sociedad al transformar barro en utensilios que utilizamos hoy día
como: tazas, platos, vasijas y jarrones. De igual manera, los padres pueden dar un gran aporte a la sociedad al
formar, como si de barro se tratara, el carácter y la personalidad de sus hijos. ¡No deje esa transformación a la
causalidad! Los alfareros no tardan más de 6 meses en usar el barro porque así se aseguran de que lo puedan
moldear y que mantenga firme su forma. Igualmente, el mejor momento para empezar a darles forma a sus hijos
es durante su primer año de vida. Pero, ¿cómo? Fomentado en ellos un amor por la lectura y el estudio. Pocas
cosas influirán tanto en el futuro de sus hijos como el que se les enseñe a leer y estudiar. ¿Qué pudiera hacer
usted para infundir en sus hijos el deseo de aprender?
1. Dé el ejemplo. Los niños tienden por naturaleza a imitar a sus padres. No solo aprenden sonidos,
expresiones y ademanes, sino también el amor por la lectura y el estudio. Pero, ¿y si a usted no le
gusta leer? En ese caso le conviene que modifique sus prioridades o actitud. Si todos los días
dedica tiempo a leer, a ellos les quedara claro que es algo importante y lo adoptarán de forma
natural.
2. Asegúrese de que sus hijos tengan buenas publicaciones a su alcance. Muchas veces los
alfareros se mantienen añadiendo agua al barro para que la masa se quede húmeda y maleable. Los
libros son esa agua que le ayudará a mantener la personalidad de sus hijos moldeable. Claro, la
lectura al igual que la comida debe saber seleccionarse. Así como usted se asegura que la comida
que sus hijos ingieren sea nutritiva, igualmente escoja libros para sus hijos con información que
les nutra el cerebro. La biblioteca pública es como un buffet de información que nunca se agota.
No se olvide de llevar a sus hijos a la biblioteca, especialmente durante el verano.
En la antigua Grecia muchos jarrones estaban firmados por el alfarero y el decorador. De igual modo, en la
familia normalmente son dos los que forman a los hijos. Tanto el padre como la madre pueden “estampar” su
firma al infundir en ellos amor por la lectura y el estudio. Eso logrará que ellos tengan buen desempeño
académico y laboral, mejores relaciones humanas, una clara visión del mundo que los rodea y una relación más
estrecha con su familia. Si como padres hacen todo lo posible por seguir estas sugerencias, se van a sentir
orgullosos de haber sido el alfarero que transformó a sus hijos en personas de bien.

Diana has many plans and one of them is to continue her education at
Hillsborough Community College in the fall majoring in either health or
education. She is currently attending HCC as a dual enrollment student.
She manages to stay on top of her classes in high school as well as in college.
At times, Diana feels it is very challenging since she has other responsibilities.
After school, she takes care of her younger siblings, cleans the house and
cooks for when her mom returns home tired from working in the agricultural
fields. She lives in a single parent home where her mother is the sole
breadwinner. Diana is a DACA student which limits her resources to pursue
her education. She has not let her circumstances stop her from excelling in
her classes as evidenced by her 5.9 GPA. She has managed to do well
academically by taking rigorous honors and AP classes as well as dual
enrollment. Diana works in the fields on weekends and school breaks to
help out. Still she finds time to help her community by distributing food at
Feeding America of Tampa Bay to those less fortunate.

Diana tiene muchos planes y uno de ellos es continuar su educación en Hillsborough Community College en
el otoño con especialización en salud o educación. Ella está asistiendo a HCC como estudiante de matrícula
doble. Se mantiene actualizada en sus clases en la escuela secundaria, así como en la universidad. A veces,
Diana siente que es muy difícil ya que tiene otras responsabilidades. Después de la escuela, ella cuida de sus
hermanos menores, limpia la casa y la cocina para cuando su madre regresa a casa cansada de trabajar en los
campos agrícolas. Ella vive en un hogar donde su madre es el único sostén de la familia. Diana es un
estudiante DACA que limita sus recursos para continuar su educación, pero ella no ha dejado que sus
circunstancias le impidan sobresalir en sus clases como lo demuestra su 5.9 de aprovechamiento académico.
Ella ha logrado sobresalir académicamente tomando rigurosas clases de honores y clases de AP, así como su
doble matrícula. Diana trabaja en el campo los fines de semana y las vacaciones escolares para ayudar a su
familia. Aun así, ella encuentra tiempo para ayudar a su comunidad mediante la distribución de alimentos en
Feeding America de Tampa Bay a los menos afortunados..
