oday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, the dogma of faith which acknowledges that there are three
persons in One God: Father, Son, and Spirit.
Over the centuries, many great minds have tried to explain the Trinitarian mystery. Some have described Salvation History in
terms of the Trinity, showing how the Father is the source of all revelation communicated by the Son, and brought to completion
by the Holy Spirit. Stated differently, the Old Testament era might be seen as the era of God the Father; the Life of Jesus Christ in
the flesh, described in the Gospels, is seen as the era of God the Son; and the rest of the New Testament, as well as the life of the
Church, is seen as the era of the Holy Spirit. God the Father planned our creation as intelligent beings, the highest and noblest of
his creatures on earth. The Son carried out to the letter the Father’s plan for our adoption, by sharing with us our humanity, so that
we could come to share in his divinity. The Holy Spirit dwells in the Church and in each member of the anointed community of
believers in order to fill our hearts with a deep love of God, orienting us to all that is good, and to our true and eternal happiness.
Indeed, others have sought to describe the three persons in one God as the Giver, the Gift, and the Act of Giving. Some have
presented the Trinity as the Creator, the Redeemer, and the Sanctifier. Still others, have referred to the Lover, the Beloved, and the
Act of Loving between the two.
The bottom line, however, is that today’s liturgy invites us to participate again in the mystery of the Blessed Trinity, and in so
doing, to find life. Actually, as a result of being among the baptized, we are already heirs to a tremendous spiritual patrimony, all
thanks to our God who is Father, Son, and Spirit. It is the Father who created us and planned an eternal life for us. He designed us
for Himself and, as Saint Augustine once said, “our hearts are restless until they rest in [Him].” The Son fulfilled the Father’s will by
revealing to us his love, wisdom, and way of life. He is the Word of God spoken in the words of men and women, calling us to life,
that is, eternal life. The Holy Spirit was sent to complete God’s work on earth to sanctify, to give courage and strength, and to
inspire in us an appetite for eternity, and every good work to help us to get there. The manifold gifts of the Spirit make our lives
fertile in this pursuit.
We need church, prayer, sacraments, Scripture, and liturgical celebrations like this one, the Solemnity of the Most Holy
Trinity. Through them, we gain perspective and orient our lives once more to that which speaks to us at the deepest level of our
being. Our involvement in the mission of the Church actually models the life of the Trinity when we are the giver of our gift of
time, talent, and treasure on behalf of the Church which is Christ’s Mystical Body. Our act of giving puts us in touch with the Spirit
working through us to build the Kingdom of God. This great Solemnity invites us to live in the knowledge of God above us, God
beside us, and God within us. There couldn’t be a better way to be a fulfilled people of faith than to model our lives on the
One in whose image we are created.
