With about 400 children, Juventus Academy has
been developing a powerful program in Florida
for the past 5 years. A couple of interviews
with two of its referents, Stefano Ledda and
Christian Driussi.

How did your
relationship
with
Juventus start?
We represent Juventus
in Florida and have
partnered with the
club during 4 years,
now going into our 5th
year. I started out this
business with two other partners. We have
around 400 kids with
age groups between
U-6 and U-15.
How different is
it for kids to learn
how to play soccer
in Italy than in the
U.S.?
In Italy, we play soccer
on the streets every
day. Here, there isn’t
as much time for kids
to be playing the sport.
The only time they do
play is when they are
here, practicing with
us.
What is your
favorite thing about
working with kids?
Being able to see their
hard work and improvement from one
week to another.
What has your
professional career
been like so far?
I played in the Italian
third division. At the
age of 35, I moved to
the U.S.
Did you change
your mind as you
made the transition
from
player
to
coach?
It is a completely different approach. Soccer, in Italy, was very
competitive. Now, I
feel that my focus is to
learn as many aspects
and techniques to be
able to teach the kids
in the best way and as
fast as possible.

» ¿Cómo inicio tu relación con Juventus? Nosotros
represesentamos a Juventus en la Florida y hemos sido socios con el
club durante 5 años, ahora vamos hacia nuestro quinto año. Comencé
el negocio con otros dos socios. Tenemos alrededor de 400 niños
entre las edades de U-6 y U-17.

para que los chicos salgan a practicar el deporte. El único tiempo en el
que ellos si lo juegan es cuando están aquí, practicando con nosotros.

Poder observar su gran esfuerzo y progreso de una semana a otra.
» ¿Cómo te ha ido en tu carrera profesional hasta el
momento? Jugué en la tercera división italiana. A los 35 años, me
mudé a Estados Unidos.

¿Cambiaste tu enfoque al hacer la transición de
jugador a entrenador? El soccer, en Italia, era muy competitivo.
Ahora, siento que mi objetivo es aprender muchos elementos y técnicas
para poder enseñarles a los niños de la mejor mánera y con rapidez.
» ¿Tienen una relación cercana con Juventus? Es un

Esperamos llegar a tener 500 niños en nuestro club, continuar
enseñandoles sobre el soccer y ayudarlos a crecer.
» Idealmente ¿la meta sería que los jugadores de la
academia al pasar el tiempo juegen para el Juventus?
Sí, abosolutamente. Existen varios pasos en el crecimiento de una
academia. Aún estamos en la etapa inicial pero incluso en esta etapa
ya fuimos a Italia dos veces. Los chicos experimentaron un tipo de
cultura diferente y fueron retados a participar en competencias
internacionales.

¿Cómo comenzó tu relación con el club? Tuvimos
que decidir si queriamos crear nuestra propia academia o afiliarnos
con alguien más. Descubrimos que Juventus es la mejor academia
comparada con otros grandes clubes en Italia.

In 2010, Stefano contacted me since he
wanted to open up a
soccer business. We had
to decide if we wanted
to create our own academy or to affiliate with
someone else. We found
out that Juventus is the
best
academy
compared to other major
clubs in Italy.
Ideally, would the
goal be for players
from the academy to
eventually play for
Juventus?
Yes, absolutely. There
are different steps in
the growth of an academy. We’re still in a very
early stage, but even at
this stage we already
went to Italy twice. The
kids experienced a different type of culture
and were challenged to
participate at international tournaments.

Los niños de Doral FC trabajaron fuerte y con entusiasmo bajo la atenta
mirada de Kevin Piraquive (26 años) y los miembros del staff de Doral
FC. Niños y niñas entre los 6 y los 13 años realizaron ejercicios de

Soccer Club’s vision and
philosophy?
The club aims to have boys
and girls between ages 5 to
17. Although we will have
recreational
soccer,
our
vision is more formative
and competitive; we are
focused on teaching boys and
girls all soccer techniques.
Competitiveness
is
very
important for us because the
Pachuca group is interested
in ensuring that the kids that
stand out can later begin a
process to become part of
the reserve squad and start in
professional soccer.
Will Pachuca have its
own tournament?
The tournament takes place
in Mexico every Easter, to
observe players and get closer
to the kids. The players who
attend belong to categories
2000 to 2004.
What do kids need to
join this club?
They only need authorization
from their parents and the
desire to learn how to play
soccer. We have an Argentine/
Mexican soccer learning style.
How many teams will
Pachuca have in Florida?
At the moment, there is one in
Orlando, we recently started
in Kendall, and soon we’ll
be in Homestead. We are the
only subsidiary of the team
for all Florida.
Do you think soccer
is a popular sport in
Florida?
Many would think it is, but
actually, there is still a long
way to go. Compared to Latin
American soccer, there is still
a lot of progress to be made in
Florida.

Llega un grande del soccer en México
El Club de Fútbol Pachuca, uno de los grandes clubes mexicanos,
aterrizó en la Florida recientemente. Su primera estación fue
Orlando y ahora está iniciando operaciones en Kendall. Su presidente
Andrés Felipe Pérez, con estudios en Colombia y Argentina, tiene
gran experiencia en el soccer profesional, juvenil e infantil. Andrés
Felipe inició en el soccer en Colombia y a los 17 años se licenció
en Educación Física y Deportes, formando su propia academia en
Bogotá. Luego en Argentina estudió Dirección técnica infantil, juvenil,
profesional y preparación física del alto rendimiento. Y allí nació una
relación muy fuerte con el equipo Lanus, un equipo clásico de Buenos
Aires. Éstas son sus ideas y visión con el equipo mexicano en la Florida.
» ¿Cuál es la visión y filosofía del club Pachuca?
El objetivo del club es tener a chicos y chicas desde los 5 años hasta
los 17 años. Aunque tendremos soccer recreativo, nuestra visión es
más formativa y competitiva, estamos enfocados en enseñarle a los
niños y niñas todas las técnicas del soccer. La parte competitiva es
bien importante para nosotros, porque el grupo Pachuca está muy
interesado en que los chicos que vayan destacando, luego puedan
iniciar un proceso para formar parte de las reservas de su equipo para
después llegar al soccer profesional.
» ¿El Pachuca tendrá su propio torneo?
Este torneo se realiza en México cada Semana Santa, para ver
jugadores y para tener un acercamiento con todos los chicos y chicas.
Los jugadores que asisten van desde la categoría 2000 hasta 2004.
» ¿Qué necesitan los chicos para entrar a este club?
Solo necesitan tener la autorización de sus padres y muchas ganas de
aprender a jugar al soccer. Nosotros tenemos un tipo de aprendizaje

Actualmente ya está abierto en Orlando, recientemente en Kendall, y

Muchos creerían que sí, pero en realidad hay un largo camino que

intelligence, and providing them with the best

the upcoming changes to
birth-year registration, the
impact of heading for children that are 10 years old
or younger, and the use of
casts and other hard yielding devices with a doctor’s
authorization and game official.
Even though, there has
been a lot of controversy surrounding the new
changes, it is worth stating
and stressing that these
new standards and game
formats impact players,
coaches, and parents and
all are expected to follow.
The subsequent information outlines the standards
for U9-U12
CAMBIOS
LO QUE TODOS NECESITAN SABER
Las nuevas Iniciativas de Entrenamiento de Soccer en Estados Unidos están enfocadas en mejorar las habilidades e inteligencia de los jugadores juveniles, y brindarles la mejor oportunidad para desarrollarse como jugadores de soccer.
La Asociación de Soccer Juvenil de la Florida celebró recientemente su Asamblea General Anual. Algunos de los talleres más esperados se
refirieron a los próximos cambios en el registro por año de nacimiento, el impacto de cabecear en niños de 10 años y menores, y el uso de
yesos y otros aparatos con la autorización de un médico y un oficial del partido.
A pesar de que ha existido mucha controversia en torno a los nuevos cambios, vale la pena señalar y subrayar que estas nuevas normas y
formatos de juego tienen un impacto sobre jugadores, entrenadores y padres, y se espera que todos sigan las reglas.

Trabajó por 19 años en US Soccer Federation, su labor consistió en
buscar talentos, dentro de los grupos minoritarios, como los hispanos.
También trabajó con todas las selecciones de Estados Unidos desde
U14 hasta la mayor. Además, fue instructor de técnicos por 18 años
y participó en seminarios en diferentes zonas de Europa y América.
Al principio, no fue fácil, cuenta, porque el sistema estaba hecho
para un grupo determinado. Pero con ayuda del periodismo hispano,
en todo el país, pudimos hacerle saber a los chicos de grupos
minoritarios que ellos podían jugar en las selecciones de USA.
¿Cuánto ha cambiado desde que estuviste
involucrado hasta ahora?
Ha cambiado mucho. Ahora, tenemos una liga nacional con grupos de
edades cruciales como U12.
¿Qué piensas de los nuevos formatos de juego para
U12?
Creo que estamos 15 años atrás, y no porque estemos haciendo
mal las cosas pero porque el resto del mundo nos lleva 80 años
de experiencia. Necesitamos tener cuidado con lo que estamos
buscando porque el soccer ya está inventado.
¿Cuáles serán los beneficios para el desarrollo de los
jugadores y el negocio del soccer?
Más jugadores, más dinero, más patrociandores, más clubs
invirtiendo en el soccer de otros lugares en el mundo. Este país
esta aún en pañales en cuanto al soccer, especialmente el sur de
la Florida.
¿Cuál es tu opinión respecto a las reglas de no
cabecear?
Necesitamos ser cuidados con esta relga, la entiendo pero a la vez,
necesitamos desarrollar al jugador e implementarla poco a poco.
De acuerdo a la federación de soccer de USA, en
2 años, no habrán posiciones ni campeones en los
torneos para U12 y categorías menores. Cuál sera el
impacto par los clubes pequeños y los padres?
Siempre lo he dicho y lo diré hasta el día que muera. Si queremos
estar a nivel mundial, debemos seguir las reglas de FIFA.
¿Cómo ves el futuro del soccer en Florida?
Si ayudamos a nuestros chicos, veo un futuro brillante. ¿Dónde
puedes encontrar un equipo con 8-10 jugadores de diferentes países?

I have some very nice memories

What has your experience been like at

Great, my coaches and teammates have been

What are you bringing to the club?
My job is to give it my all and the most import-
ant thing for the team is to win.
What are your objectives as a soccer
player?
Well, I’m here to help the team as much as
possible to reach their targets and win a lot

How do you prepare yourself mentally
before a game?
I just like to relax. I also really enjoy talking
to my family, before every match I call my
