Melius Christiansen, founder of the world-renowned St. Olaf College Choir. After considering a career as a concert pianist, Paul followed in his father’s footsteps, directing the Concordia College choirs in Moorhead, MN, from 1937-1986 and writing hundreds of pieces for his choirs. “Wondrous Love” is a Christian folk hymn originally published in a collection of camp meeting songs in 1811. The tune is of much earlier origin and is notable for its use of Dorian mode, which sounds like the natural minor scale but with the sixth scale degree raised. Folk tunes such as “Greensleeves” and “Scarborough Fair” feature the same modal scale. During Communion, the choir sings Richard Farrant’s anthem “Lord, For Thy Tender Mercy’s Sake.” Farrant (c.1525-1580) began his music career as a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, then served as organist at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor for the rest of his life. He was also active in Elizabethan theatre, founding the first Blackfriars Theatre, and was the first English composer to write verse anthems (which feature the alternation of verses for soloists with sections composed for the full choir). The text is from the 1566 collection Lidley’s Prayers: Lord, for thy tender mercy’s sake, lay not our sins to our charge, but forgive that is past and give us grace to amend our sinful lives. To decline from sin and incline to virtue, that we may walk in a perfect heart before thee, —Kevin St. Clair, Director Gloria Dei Choir Thriving Marriages presented by Dr. John & Claire Yzaguirre Sunday, October 2, 1:30-4:30 p.m., $10/person St. Philip Benizi Church hall, 235 S. This year for the first time we will showcase students, alumni and parishioners at La Fiesta on Sunday, October 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you are an alumni or parishioner and would like to have us display an art piece of yours, please drop off your art at the Parish Office no later than Friday, September 30. Please include your name and graduation year if applicable on the piece so we can accurately identify it. All art will be available for pick up at La Fiesta after 4 p.m. or will be available to pick up from the Parish Office after Monday, October 3. Our goal is to raise awareness of the contribution our Catholic schools have to the community in the areas of visual arts, theatre arts and musical arts. If you have any questions, please call the Parish Office or email Lucinda Montgomery at [email protected] Young Families Ministry Monthly Mom’s Group Join us! Our aim is to get to know more families in the parish and develop a deeper understanding of our faith to bring into our homes and share with our children. Our group is bilingual—both English and Spanish speakers are welcome! This Saturday morning group is 100% kidfriendly! Our next meetup is at 9:00 a.m. on October 22. To RSVP and for location, contact Tanya at (714) 6240599 or [email protected]. You can also find information on this group and other meetups at www.meetup.com/Catholic-families-OLG. In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation. “People in every nation enhance the social dimension of their lives by acting as committed and responsible citizens” (Evangelii Gaudium, no. 220). The obligation to participate in political life is rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow Jesus Christ and to bear Christian witness in all we do. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, “It is necessary that all participate, each according to his position and role, in promoting the common good. This obligation is inherent in the dignity of the human person. . . . As far as possible citizens should take an active part in public life” (nos. 1913-1915).
