A MESSAGE FROM MONSIGNOR MARC TRUDEAU
W
hen we read the Gospels, we will very often hear about the opposition of a group of people called “Pharisees” to the words
and works of Jesus. The Gospels present them as a unified and organized group. This was not the case in reality. The intent of the Gospel
writer is to identify a school of thought that was in opposition to the
teachings of Jesus so as to explain the Gospel in contrast to other
teachings. It is always easier to explain something in comparison to
another known quality or quantity.
T
oday’s Gospel presents us with the
scene of Jesus dining at the
home of Simon, a Pharisee. One
can guess at the outset that the
writer chose this story to teach
how Jesus was different from
others. When a woman comes in
and begins washing Jesus’ feet
with her tears, drying them with her hair,
kissing them and anointing them with ointment, the Pharisees are aghast. Nothing is
said of what kind of sinner the woman is but
her actions are those of the lowest of servants
and so one can assume that the Pharisees are
correct in their judgment. Jesus, on the other
hand, approves of her actions and states that
because of her great love, her many sins are
forgiven.
n the Gospel of John, Jesus
washes the feet of his disciples
at his last supper with them. Although we do not hear this story in
Luke’s Gospel from which today’s
reading is taken, the scene immediately comes to mind. In this case it is the
sins of those whose feet are washed that will
be forgiven by the great love of the one doing
the washing. This exchange of position of the
sinner and the one forgiving is significant.
We re-enact this story at the Mass of the
Lord’s Supper every Holy Thursday as we
begin the celebration of Easter and remember that God’s mercy and God’s judgment are
the same thing. Jesus’ cross is the ultimate
sign of the exchange of position, the death of
the sinless one allows for the redemption of
all.

Cuando leemos los evangelios, muy a menudo escuchamos acercas de la oposición de un
grupo de personas llamados “fariseos” a las palabras y trabajos de Jesús. Los evangelios los presenta como un grupo unido y organizado. Este no era el caso en la realidad. La intención del evangelista es identificar una escuela de pensamientos que se oponía a las enseñanzas de Jesús para
explicar el evangelio a diferencias de otras enseñanzas. Siempre es más fácil explicar algo comparándolo con otra calidad o cantidad conocida.
El evangelio de hoy nos presenta la escena de Jesús cenando en la casa de Simón, un
fariseo. Uno puede adivinar desde el principio
que el escritor escogió esta historia para enseñar que Jesús era diferente a los demás. Cuando
una mujer entra y empieza a lavarle los pies a
Jesús con sus lágrimas, secándoselos con sus
cabellos, besándoselos y ungiéndoselos con ungüento, los fariseos se horrorizaron. No se dice
nada acerca de qué tipo de pecadora era la mujer pero sus acciones son de las bajas de los sirvientes y uno puede asumir que los fariseos tienen razón en su juicio. Jesús, por su parte,
aprueba sus acciones y declara que, debido a su
gran amor, todos sus pecados están perdonados.

la misma cosa. La cruz de Jesús es el ultimo
signo del cambio de posición, la muerte de un
inmaculado permite la redención de todos.
En el evangelio de Juan, Jesús lava los
pies de sus discípulos en su última cena con
ellos. Aunque no oímos esta historia en el evan-

LABYRINTH: The Walking Prayer
part I—What is a labyrinth?
During the Middle Ages, Christians were encouraged to make the pilgrimage
to Jerusalem at some point in their lives. Because of expense and distance, the
labyrinth became a symbol for this journey. It is a metaphor for life, the Christian life which we often describe as a pilgrimage or journey with God or a journey in which we attempt to grow closer in relationship with God.
A labyrinth is usually circular in shape. It can be found outside or within
buildings, made of a variety of materials and plants, permanently placed or
temporarily drawn or laid out. One of the most famous is the stone labyrinth
set in the floor of the Cathedral in Chartres, France in the early 1300’s. It represents the tortuous path pilgrims took to reach this place and others on the
way to the Holy Land.
Many people look upon a labyrinth as a maze for as in life, once we enter, it is
not clear where the path will take us. As in life, we cannot foresee the twists
and turns the future holds, but if we stay on the correct path we will eventually
arrive at the center of our being, God. Sometimes the path leads inward only
to suddenly turn away again. We meet others as we pray on the labyrinth; faceto-face, stepping aside to let them pass; some catch up to us and pass us from
behind. At the center we rest with God.

EL ARREPENTIMIENTO
DEL PECADO

Después de mostrar a Jesús poderoso en palabras,
Lucas lo presenta poderoso también en obras, como
liberador de la enfermedad (criado del centurión),
de la muerte (el muchacho de Naín) y del pecado
(la mujer pecadora). Jesús es un gran profeta que
acoge a los pecadores y los perdona cuando éstos
reconocen que su salvación está en Dios. El amor
es consecuencia del perdón, fruto de la conversión.
Pero, ante todo, la fe: <<Tu fe te ha salvado>>.
El pecado aparece a lo largo de toda escritura, porque se opone al amor y la misericordia de Dios, que
constituyen la verdadera trama del relato bíblico.
Los profetas muestran que el pecado es la oposición a los planes de Dios, a su alianza, a su promesa, a su reino. Por eso denuncian el pecado, lo ponen en su lugar y proponen la conversión. No es
suficiente el arrepentimiento como mero reconocimiento de un error o falta, es necesario además
cambiar de vida para producir frutos de conversión.
Cristo nuestro Salvador.
Cristo es el Siervo que ha venido a librar al ser humano de sus pecados, Es, por lo tanto, el Salvador.
Jesús ama a los pecadores, aunque denuncia el pecado; y muestra en sus enseñanzas la misericordia
de Dios. Se acerca a los pecadores, come con ellos
y los defiende de la severidad de los fariseos.
Cuando hay arrepentimiento, siempre perdona
En el evangelio de hoy, una mujer de pasado oscuro, despreciada por muchos de la ciudad, sabe que
Jesús es un enviado de Dios y quiere decirle algo a
Dios. La escena tiene lugar en una comida de la
sociedad. Sin ser invitada, la mujer se acerca a los
pies del Señor. Las palabras que pensaba decir se le
anudan en la garganta, pero con sus lágrimas, besando los pies a Jesús y ungiéndolo con perfume,
quiere expresar su dolor y su deseo de acercarse a
Dios. Jesús la deja actuar en silencio, se siente conmovido por ese gesto de sinceridad y la perdona.
Esta historia tan humana es en cierta forma la historia de cada uno de nosotros. Hay momentos en que
queremos hablar con Dios y no podemos, se nos
hace difícil.
Signos Humanos.
La mujer emplea unos signos muy humanos para
hablar con Dios. El llanto es una manera muy viva
de expresar el dolor y la tristeza, El beso es una
forma de manifestar respeto y amor. Un regalo co-
mo un vaso de perfume, significa admiración.
Dios se pone al alcance de la mano para entender
este lenguaje nuestro. El supo lo que es llorar y por
eso es capaz de entender cuando ve lágrimas en los
ojos de la mujer o en los ojos de muchas personas
de nuestro tiempo. Dios se hizo sensible al dolor
humano. Dios se hizo humano para entender la forma en que nosotros expresamos el amor.
El sabe que el único lenguaje que une realmente a
los seres humanos es el amor.
Cuando el fariseo que invito a Jesús a comer critica
interiormente a la mujer pecadora, el Señor dice
unas palabras que nos hacen pensar: “Sus numerosos pecados, le quedan perdonados, por el mucho
amor que demostró” Con eso quiere decir que el
único camino para obtener el perdón y la reconciliación es el amor.
La mujer siguió el instinto de su sinceridad. Se
sentía con el alma manchada por el mal, avergonzada por su debilidad, empequeñecida por sus errores. Pero tenía un real deseo de purificarse, de volver a adquirir su dignidad perdida, de levantarse de
su situación, de empezar una nueva vida. Por eso
se acerco al Señor con toda sinceridad y obtuvo el
perdón,
Reflexión
Un diálogo con el Señor nos transforma
completamente, como lo hizo con la mujer
del evangelio. Las palabras del Señor nos
devuelven la paz y la alegría.
¿Hemos venido a misa a buscara al Señor,
como lo hizo la mujer? ¿Venimos con nuestras penas, con nuestras ofrendas y con la
actitud de hijos para hablar con nuestro
Padre?

LABERINTO: Oracion del Camino
parte I—¿Que es un laberinto?
Durante la Edad Media, se animó a los cristianos a hacer la peregrinación a
Jerusalén en algún momento de sus vidas. Debido a los gastos y la distancia, el laberinto se convirtió en un símbolo para este viaje. Es una metáfora
de la vida, la vida cristiana que a menudo describimos como una peregrinación o viaje con Dios o un viaje en el que intentamos acercarnos más en la
relación con Dios.
Un laberinto es generalmente de forma circular. Se puede encontrar fuera o
dentro de edificios, hecho de una variedad de materiales y plantas, colocados de forma permanente o dibujado o distribuida temporalmente. Uno de
los más famosos es el conjunto laberinto de piedra en el suelo de la catedral
de Chartres, Francia a principios de los años 1300. Representa el tortuoso
camino peregrinos tomaron para llegar a este lugar, y los demás en el camino a la Tierra Santa.
Muchas personas buscan en un laberinto como un laberinto para que en la
