JOSEPH Aug23,2015 From the Pastor’s Desk Fr. Philip Kollithanath In his book “words of joy and life” Pope Francis speaks about the Mission of the Family. Family is a fruitful and living reality that supports life and celebrates it. There we learn true love which is received and returned. Pope continues, “Families at their best actively communicate by their witness the beauty and richness of the relationship between man and woman, between parents and children”, and among siblings (p.87). Families become a blessing in the world when they bring children into the world, train them in faith and in sound values, and teach them to contribute to society. It Is in the family that a person listens to the Gospel for the first time in one’s life. Family helps God’s love become present to the world through love and activities. Through family we extend Christ’s Kingdom in this world. It is the prophetic role of the family. Infidelity is the enemy of a healthy family. Individualism, propagandist social media, and revolutionary ideologues constantly struggle to erode the culture of the family. The communion of life of the spouses, their openness to the gift of life, their mutual respect and acceptance, transmission of faith to children, the atmosphere of love, trust, and security which shapes healthy generations and many such functions make family truly the “web of the society”. Today more than ever, family needs stability and recognition. The model of the Holy Family and the role of St. Joseph in protecting it from dangers is a permanent inspiration. The destruction of the family will adversely affect the vulnerable section of the society, the women, children and the elderly. The holiness and the indissolubility of the Christian Matrimony as a lifelong covenant of love between one man and one woman requires conjugal fidelity and abstinence from illusory sexual freedom outside marriage. Protecting the family is the utmost responsibility of every society. Family guarantees respect for every life from conception till natural death. It is where God’s will and God’s plan are revealed and recognized, persons are formed by developing relationships, sharing joys and difficulties, children are accepted, loved, cared for and protected. We must resist at all cost the tendency to diminish the importance of family in our society and in the church. Perverted individualism and misguided sexplorations run the risk of confusing younger minds. The liberal forces are out to destroy the moral sensitivity and religious convictions of today’s younger generation. We have to educate children on the negative impact of these revolutionary ideologies. They should be informed of the importance of Christian values in a person’s successful and happy life and the protection of healthy families. If children enjoyed life in the family, they will always long to return to visit and even to stay for good. Let us pray for Christian families. God bless you all. Sponsored by the Respect Life Program, Catholic Charities The ministry of permanent deacons has become an essential part of our parish life today, yet for centuries until 1967, this deeply traditional ministry had virtually disappeared. Every priest had first to be ordained a deacon, but the notion that EDUCATIONAL MINUTES one could actually embrace a permanent vocation to the diaconate was lost. Anyone that would like to ask Kim Price any questions The primary ministry of the deacon is to the welfare of the community, especially its poor, and his role in sacraments and preaching flows from that. His principal role is to animate and promote the ministry of all the faithful. Ninety percent of permanent deacons are married, although the discipline of celibacy for clerics means that if a deacon is widowed, normally he cannot remarry, nor can an unmarried deacon marry once ordained. The deacon does not preside at Mass nor may he absolve sins. Nor, since anointing of the sick is linked theologically to penance, may he anoint. Sometimes we are slow to engage with a tradition: Trent approved permanent deacons in the 1560s, but nothing was done until the 1960s. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
