From the Pastor
Everything did
not go
perfectly for
Jesus in His
ministry.
Today’s Gospel
from St. Mark
relates how He
was rejected
in His own
hometown. “A
prophet is not without honor except
in his native place and among his own
kin and in his own house.” There are
probably times when we share in that
kind of frustration. Nevertheless, if
we look at today’s readings in their
totality, we find the resolution to
that kind of exasperation.
In our Second Reading from St. Paul’s
Second Letter to the Corinthians, the
Lord speaks to Paul. God says
basically the same thing to Ezekiel in
the First Reading. To the prophet
Ezekiel who is being asked to
communicate with the Israelites, God
says, “Hard of face and obstinate of
heart are they to whom I am sending
you. But you shall say to them: ‘Thus
says the Lord God’.” Ezekiel is being
commissioned to carry out a difficult
task with the strength provided by
God. Throughout Holy Scripture we
get the same message, that if we put
our trust in the Lord and if we allow
Him to work through us, we can
accomplish so much.
St. Paul expands upon this message of
strength in his letter to the
Corinthians. Paul recounts how he
feels burdened and weak and turns to
God, and God replies to him: “My
grace is sufficient for you, for power
is made perfect in weakness.” As
indicated this is the same message
which Ezekiel received, and it is
worth reiterating that it is the same
message each of us receives through
the Word. In our reading of the
Passion from Mark on Palm Sunday,
we heard Jesus cry out in the garden,
“Remove this cup from me.” Paul
pleads in a similar way in this letter
when he says, “I begged the Lord
about this, that it might leave me.”
God’s response is always that if we
rely on Him, if we trust in Him, all
things are possible. If we are
burdened, there are two ways to
address the burden: one is to remove
the burden, but the other is to
strengthen the back which is bearing
it. If we turn to the Lord for strength,
it will allow us to more easily bear
the burdens, the weaknesses, of life.
In that way, as Paul indicates, a
weakness can actually become a
strength.
Jesus faces a different kind of
burden, a different kind of weakness
in our Gospel reading from St. Mark.
Jesus had left Nazareth as a
carpenter and as a man alone. He
came back as a gifted teacher with
followers completely devoted to Him.
It is no wonder that the people in His
hometown asked the question, “What
happened to Jesus?” They found it
difficult to believe in Him. This was
surely both frustrating and
disappointing to the Lord. However,
like Paul and Ezekiel in the earlier
readings, Jesus makes this into a
strength. Rather than bowing to the
feeling that He could accomplish
nothing, He moves on and becomes
stronger in His ministry and His
message.
How do we respond to failure? How
do we react to seeming burdens? Do
we admit defeat and abandon what
seems to be a fruitless journey, or do
we seek and find strength in the
presence of God and literally turn
what seems to be a weakness into a
strength? The next verse in Mark (6:7)
states, “And he made a circuit of the
villages, teaching.” We need to
counter life’s difficulties, problems
which exist because of our own
weakness in many cases, with the
same kind of resolve. Knowing that
God is with us and that the Lord gives
us a vigor which we cannot have
without Him, we need to move
forward and continue and succeed.
Blessings, Father John

Pastoral Ponderings
For weeks now the country has been
expecting the Supreme Court of the
United States (SCOTUS) decision regarding
so-called “same-sex marriage”. For some
it has been a period of waiting which
involved fear and trembling. For others it
has been a period of waiting which
involved joyful expectation. Now that the
decision has been handed down, people of
faith need to understand that as with any
law of the land, this particular ruling has
to be evaluated from the standpoint of
faith and morals. If a law is immoral then
it must be opposed and exposed for what
it is. A parallel, of course, can be seen in
terms of the SCOTUS decisions regarding
the destruction of innocent human life
through abortion.
The Church established by Christ Jesus has
the obligation to proclaim the gospel of
Jesus Christ with joy and conviction even
when that proclamation is contrary to the
sentiments of many and even the law of
the land. Marriage is defined by God and
no human action or decree can change
that. While the SCOTUS decision is
disappointing, it must nonetheless never
be seen as a reason to retreat or
compromise from revealed truth.
Moreover, it should not be a reason for
undue fear and trepidation. With this in
mind I share the following blog post from
the Catholic Gentleman blog
(catholicgentleman.net). Sam Guzman,
the blogger, is a husband and father who
works with pro-life activities in
Milwaukee.
Satan Hates the Family.
Here’s Why.
The United States just legalized gay
“marriage.” Fear is in the air. I will
simply share these thoughts:
The final war between Satan and the Lord
God is over the family. Why? Because the
family is an icon of the Most Holy Trinity.
The communion of love between the three
Divine Persons is the original family. This
Divine communion is fruitful, that is, it
brings forth life. It cannot help but do so.
Life bursts forth from the love of the Holy
Trinity.
The family is the earthly image and icon
of Trinitarian love. The communion of
love between husband and wife is
designed to be fruitful, to bring forth
life. In a very real sense, married love
Page 7
creates. This is why marriage
carries the dignity of a sacrament—
because it is a holy image of the
Trinity.
Only God can truly create. Satan
cannot. And Satan hates this fact.
He is sterile in every sense of the
word. He hates the Trinity because
he envies its life giving and
creative power, and he hates the
family because it mirrors the
Trinity.
And what better way to mock and
warp the life-giving love of the
Holy Trinity than to attempt to
redefine marriage as something
that cannot bring forth life? To
redefine it as something inverted
and sterile, like Satan himself? This
is what homosexual “marriage”
really is: Satan’s mockery of the
family, and thus of the Trinity.
The good news is, Our Lord,
through the Immaculate Virgin,
will crush Satan’s head. Just when
his victory seems sure, he will
meet with a sudden defeat. Count
on it.
Finally, stay strong. Be at peace.
Be courageous. Never, ever lose
heart.
“Our commandress, the
Immaculate, refuge of sinners, is
also the vanquisher of the hellish
serpent.” – St. Maximilian Kolbe
“Above all, never let yourselves be
troubled, never be frightened,
never fear anything. The
Immaculate, in fact, is she perhaps
not aware of everything? If this
were not the case, it would really
be a problem.”
– St. Maximilian Kolbe

A partir
Consagración a Jesús a
través de María
Exposición Perpetua del
Santísimo Sacramento
¿Le gustaría consagrarse a nuestra
Santísima Virgen María? Quizás esta es
una pregunta que ha escuchado
anteriormente, ya sea porque le han
preguntado a Usted, a algún familiar,
amigo y/o conocido. Muchos nos
preguntamos ¿qué es la Consagración?
La respuesta es muy simple, el
consagrarse a nuestra madre significa
entregarle todo a ella, nuestras
alegrías, penas, trabajos,
sufrimientos para que ella nos guíe,
proteja y lo más importante que
interceda por nosotros ante su hijo
amado. Por tal motivo, el Grupo de
Consagrados a Jesús a través de María
invita a todos los interesados a una
reunión informativa acerca de la
Consagración el jueves 9 de Julio a
las 7pm en el salón 203. ¡¡Los
esperamos!!!
Nuestro Señor Jesucristo está
expuesto en la Capilla 24 horas al día,
7 días a la semana. Ven a visitarlo y a
pasar un momento en la presencia de
Jesús Sacramentado. El Señor ha
reservado gracias especiales para los
que le visitan. En el altar el Señor es
puro amor, y distribuye sus gracias a
manos llenas a los que le visitan.
