The Ignatian Corner!
BETWEEN THE NOTES: IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY AND THE LISTENING
HEART
[Note: The Second Keynote Address on July 18, 2015 at the IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY CONFERENCE
was delivered by Prof. Christopher Pramuk, Ph.D, Marquette University. Again, I present my notes on his
address.
Fr. Dominic)
Introduction:
When he was 8 or 9, music was Chris’ way into a new world; for him, learning to play the piano was
similar to Ignatius’ experience in the cave of Manresa wrestling with light and darkness, i.e. an experiential
awareness of God took place in his life. David Lonsdale (Eyes to See, Ears to Hear) states: “You don’t have to
be a Jesuit to experience Ignatian spirituality”. Father Adolfo Nicolas. S.J. states: “Religion is less a code of
teachings, than an experience of God, like an ability to appreciate classical music. We don’t proselytize, we
offer the ability of people to experience God. This is religious sensitivity as distinct from the globalization of
superficiality. Education ought not to be market-driven, but to be an opportunity to grow into humanity. This
growth begins in silence.” Fr. Nicolas is tapping into global reality.
1.) “Creation out of Nothing:”
A cellist, Paul Hailey, and a pianist, Eugen Frieson, played this piece totally unrehearsed at St. John the
Divine Cathedral in NY City. This playing makes music, reality, and the inner, spiritual life come alive. We
show up in prayer to be in touch with God so that we can be fully present to others. Emptiness and fullness
come full circle. Shared creativity plus freedom gives birth to the possibilities of presence. The cathedral
became the 3rd presence/performer of this musical piece. Nicolas: “We become silent so that we can be
attentive to what is going on.”
2.) Music of the Trinity:
In the A utobiography, Ignatius wrote about “seeing the Most Holy Trinity in the form of three keys of a
piano.” Michael Pepper states: “a single note produces waves.” The musical triad is a good explanation of the
trinity, i.e. a trinity which emanates more being. These notes together are a procession of audible light. And
between the notes something may be happening, e.g. cooking a meal, watching children at play. Overtones are
felt. God comes out to play inside the individual and inside the group.
3.) A Blind Kid from Detroit: Stevie Wonder
Stevie was born premature and with loss of optic nerves. Stevie said to this mother: maybe this is the
way I am supposed to be. We feel and we hear before we see, especially with regard to God. Stevie found his
blindness as a gift, he felt and imagined what he played. Scientists calls this “synesthesia:” the simultaneous
blending or convergence of two or more senses, hence a combination of heightened perception. Ignatian
Spirituality gives us the ability to have this combination of heightened perception. The listening heart which
God uses to find us is the human heart which is open to what God is doing within him/her. Stevie: “The whole
body engages the person. This, with our deepest imagination, enables us to understand what the mind cannot
understand.”
4.) The soul Circle: Dr. Ysaye Barnwell of Sweet Honey in the Rock
The African community learned spirituality through their hymns. When we sing the psalms, we open
our emotions to what is felt. The music of the African community was at the center of the civil rights
movement. The Negro Spirituals are an experience of the resurrection [and Transcendental Spirituality]. A
faith-community lays itself open to trust in others. In Charleston, we saw the welcoming of the stranger and
the grace of forgiveness. Sister Thea Bowman, O.F.M. stated: “As we learn to know and appreciate one
another, then we grow to love one another. The beauty of universality is that the Church is able to speak to
people in whatever language they understand best.”
Conclusion:
In all of this, our deepest desire is to play MOZART; but we play musak. Holly Scheper stated: “We
need to listen to God as Mary did in the Annunciation, Magnificat, and Visitation.”
Dear Parishioners,
The theme of this year’s Priests’ Retirement and Benefits Collection is “Forever a Priest.” Here at St.
Therese I am grateful when retired priests in the diocese such as Msgr. Bellow and Fr. Mulligan help out
at St. Therese. Even in their retirement, most priests continue to live out their vocation as servants of the
people of God. For some, it may simply be daily prayer for the intentions of our diocesan family. Others
fill in at parishes when pastors are on retreat or vacation. Some give days of reflection for seniors or
counsel parishioners.
Many of our older priests have only one family - their parish family, so they depend on the generosity of
parishioners to provide caring support in their retirement years. In order to afford well-deserved
retirement benefits for our priests, the diocese has an annual assessed collection for Priests’ Retirement
and Benefits. By the way, though our parish super senior priests, Fr. Totaro, Fr. Ward, Fr. Reese and I
are still on active status, we too benefit from this collection because the diocese sends funds equivalent of
about 15% our salaries to the Jesuit retirement fund for our future needs when we become less active.
The amount needed from this collection for all diocesan and religious order priests’ retirement and
benefits plans for the coming year is $1,715,000... Our Parish has been assessed $44,885 reflecting 3.5%
of our annual offertory income. The parish can reach immediately this mandatory contribution for
priest’s retirement if parishioners give to this second collection next week just twice what they had put
in the regular offertory collection. This important second collection will be taken at all Masses on the
weekend of September 19/20.
I am asking you to be generous in supporting retirement for the priests who have worked long years in
the Charlotte Diocese. I ask, too, that you keep me and all of our priests
in your prayers each day, and be assured of our prayers for you.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Vince Curtin, S.J
Faith Formation is excited to announce our new theme and
logo for the 2015-2016 year:
"Fed Together at Eucharist…Sent on Mission as One!"
Especially with the building of the new church, the Eucharist becomes
even more important than ever before. Being fed together emphasizes
the many peoples, the many cultures, the many differences of those who
come to receive our nourishment at the Sunday meal and that we all
receive according to our wonderful differences what we each need. For
that there is great gratitude as an important result of the gift given at
Eucharist. But, that is only half of the wonder which we celebrate. The
other is the mission, so dear to Francis our shepherd, the bishop of Rome. And that mission is always the
same. That He whom we have received together at the liturgy be better known, loved and served in our world,
especially among the poor and abandoned with whom we live. The various colors of the logo are expressions
of our hope that what we profess by the reception of the Sacrament is entirely possible to live with the help of
the Lord whom we receive.
Join us in celebrating our new theme! Our beautiful banner is hanging in the hallway of the PLC just outside
the Faith Formation office. Why not stop by and check it out?

The dedicated priests who served us in the past now
deserve to live out their retirement years in dignity.
Our parish has been assessed $44,885 for the priests’

less than two times the regular weekend offertory.
Please be as generous as you can in this second
collection, which will be taken in our parish next
weekend, September 19/20. Additional envelopes are
available in the parish office.

11/13 Friday Night Live
For most of us, when we think about faith
formation, classes for children come to mind.
This next generation of Catholics will be
running the church before too long. So yes,
the religious education of our children is
important, but we do need to realize that as
adults our religious education is never
complete.
The faith formation of adults is an essential
component of a faith formation program
because we are all on a constant journey to
get closer to God. Keep an eye on the bulletin
for a wide variety of adult faith formation
opportunities.

24avo.

P. Donald Ward,SJ
