Dear Parents and Community Members,
It is with great pride and love for this community that I
continue to serve as your Superintendent. School Districts
across Texas are faced with new state assessments (STAAR
and End of Course) which have higher academic standards as
well as budget constraints. Nevertheless, we are truly committed to a quality education for all students.
This past year we were blessed with the District, Derry,
Garriga and Junior High School being TEA Recognized. Our
School Board was honored with Region One’s School Board
of the Year Award. In addition, many of our other accomplishments include
Tarpons!

National School Bus Safety Week
October 17-21, 2011
Every day, more than 26 million students ride school bus transportation to and from
school. To celebrate School Bus Safety Week, the American School Bus Council is
sharing the following safety tips for parents and students.
For Students:
•
Be alert to traffic. Check both ways for cars before stepping off the bus.
•
Make eye contact with the bus driver and wait for the bus driver’s signal before
crossing the street.
•
Walk in front of the bus and stay in a safe place away from the street.
•
Before leaving the sidewalk, look for the flashing red lights.
•
Never go under the bus to retrieve something you have dropped.
For Parents:
•
Have your child ride the school bus to and from school instead of having or riding
with teenage passengers.
•
Never attempt to go around or pass a school bus when the stop arm is down. The
stop arm, which consists of a stop sign and red flashing lights, requires drivers in
all states to stop.
•
Review the above safety rules with your child regularly.
•
Get to know the parents of other riders. You will learn about the other children
who are riding along with your child.
•
Team with other parents to get involved and monitor bus stops and bus routes.
Voice concerns immediately to your school district.
Get to know your school’s transportation coordinator and your child’s bus driver. They
are trained professionals who see your child daily. They would be happy to tell you
about the safety features on the bus and the responsibility drivers have for keeping
their passengers safe. Keep phone numbers handy in case the bus is delayed or in the
event of an emergency.
Sign up for American School Bus council updates to stay informed about the
latest safety information, news and information on school buses at www.

detengan.
