Epiphany, God’s light for the World
The Epiphany rescues us from any temptation to privatize Christmas and puts it at the crossroads of the paths of
history. Epiphany reiterates that Jesus came for everyone.
Matthew’s gospel presents the visit of the “magi” to the newborn child in Bethlehem. The arrival of these
unexpected foreigners worried those in power, particularly King Herod who is reminded that the Messiah was to be
born in Bethlehem, “by no means the ‘least’ of the cities of Judah. ” This also reminds us of the 25th chapter of
Matthew, where Jesus reveals that he can only be found in the “ least” among us. Like Bethlehem, at first sight, the
poor and the forgotten are insignificant, yet they are great because through them the Lord is coming to us.
In the Bible, a mystery is not just a problem to be solved. It is rather a reality which surrounds us and escapes our
full understanding and control. Paul to the Ephesians reminds us that God’s mystery made manifest in Christ is not
reserved for a select few, but is for everyone. This is the heart of the Epiphany; the revelation to the magi is the
manifestation of God’s mystery to the gentiles, beyond the Jewish world.
Isaiah tells Jerusalem to “Rise up in splendor…” for their “light has come.” Yet the light is not just for them, but is
to be shared with all nations. Epiphany is the great missionary feast for the followers of Jesus. Faith is not just a
private and interior matter; rather it must impel us to solidarity, especially with the “ least” and rejected, and to
service in community for the common good.

La Epifanía nos rescata de cualquier tentación de privatizar la Navidad y la pone en la encrucijada de los senderos
de la historia. Epifanía recuerda que Jesús vino para todos.
El evangelio de Mateo presenta la visita de los "magos" al niño recién nacido en Belén. La llegada de estos extranjeros inesperados preocupa a los que están en el poder, sobre todo al Rey Herodes, que se recuerda que el Mesías nacería
en Belén, "no en manera alguna la menor (mas pequeña) entre las ciudades ilustres de Judá." Esto también nos recuerda
del capítulo 25 de Mateo, donde Jesús revela que él sólo se puede encontrar en " los mas pequeños" entre nosotros. Al
igual que Belén, a primera vista, los pobres y los olvidados son insignificantes, pero están muy bien, porque por medio de
ellos el Señor viene a nosotros.
En la Biblia, un misterio no es sólo un problema a resolver. Es más bien una realidad que nos rodea y escapa a nuestra
comprensión total y el control. Pablo a los Efesios nos recuerda que el misterio de Dios manifestado en Cristo no está
reservado para unos pocos, sino es para todos. Este es el corazón de la Epifanía, la revelación de los magos es la manifestación del misterio de Dios a los gentiles, más allá del mundo judío.
Isaías le dice a Jerusalén: "Levántate y resplandece ...porque ha llegado tu luz." Sin embargo, la luz no es sólo para
ellos, sino ha de ser compartida con todas las naciones. La Epifanía es la gran fiesta misionera para los seguidores de
Jesús. La fe no es sólo un asunto privado e interior, sino que nos debe impulsar a la solidaridad, especialmente con " los

A POST-CHRISTMAS PRAYER
Long after the angels disappear into the heavens,
the shepherds return to their flocks, the magi journey home and the great star sets, Jesus remains.
The Child in whom we rediscover God’s great love for
humanity becomes the adult Redeemer who
challenges us to imitate His selflessness and
compassion in order that we might
transform our world in love.
May we allow the miracle of Christmas to continue
long after the holiday trappings have been packed
away.
May we welcome the adult Messiah and His
challenging Gospel to recreate our lives, making the
peace, justice, and hope of this holy season a reality
in every season of the New Year.

EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
The Epiphany celebrates God's revealing or manifesting of Jesus' identity as true God, Messiah,
and Savior of the world. It not only commemorates the fact that Jesus appeared to save us, but that
God revealed the identity of Jesus to the world.
Why is the Epiphany worth celebrating?
It is worth celebrating because, regardless of which epiphany is commemorated (the event of the magi
or Christ's baptism), all are permeated with grace and Gospel. In what sense? In the sense that in
every epiphany, God took the initiative. In other words, God did not demand that we discover on our
own who Jesus of Nazareth is. He condescended to us and revealed Jesus to us in ways that we could
understand. He sought out the magi and revealed Jesus' Person and Mission to them through the star
and Scripture. They never could have discovered this on their own if He hadn't revealed it by grace. He
had mercy on John the Baptist and others at the Jordan on the day of Jesus' baptism. No one there on
that day could have possibly perceived the true identity of Jesus as John baptized Him. But God condescended to them and allowed them to hear and see the testimony of the Father and the Spirit. Once
again, God took the initiative by His grace and revealed Jesus as eternal God as well as man.
Remembering the Epiphany reminds us that we also have been sought out. God has come looking for us through His Word and Sacraments. Through these He has revealed His Son to us personally,
so that through faith we know Jesus to be the mighty God, the Savior of the world; and we believe Him
to be our God and our Savior. Have a blessed Epiphany celebration!

La Epifanía del Señor
· Salió una estrella.
· El canto de Isaías descubre la belleza iluminada de la ciudad llena de
Dios.
· Los cristianos, estrellas para el mundo paganizado.
· Hay una estrella para cada hombre.
1. Cuando Isaías contempla, radiante de alegría, el regreso de los hijos
desterrados de Israel a la ciudad luminosa, embriagado de lirismo, proclama una de las más altas cimas de la poesía hebrea, e incluso universal, el Cántico de gloria a la Jerusalén de los tiempos mesiánicos, que describe la presencia del Señor en medio de su pueblo, llenándolo de luz.
2. Pero los que hoy vienen al resplandor de la aurora que inunda Jerusalén, son también los magos,
representantes de los pueblos todos, todas las gentes. "Los tesoros del mar", los habitantes del Mediterráneo, nosotros también. Madián y Efa, los del Golfo de Akaba, y los de Sabá, Yemen, convertidos
todos en hijos de Abraham por la fe, con la ofrenda de sus productos preciosos de oro incienso y mirra, cantando las glorias del Señor. Isaías 60,1. El Profeta no ha querido hacer un relato histórico,
sino anunciar con poesía, el triunfo del Señor y de su Mesías, que se ha manifestado también a los
gentiles.
3. Mateo utiliza una leyenda, con base sólida, del episodio de los Magos, para narrar la manifestación extraordinaria que guía a los Magos a descubrir al Rey de los judíos. Después de haber contado
la genealogía de Jesús, como hijo del hombre, ratifica su categoría de Hijo de Dios, destacando a los
Magos como figuras teológicas. Son paganos, y desconocen la Escritura. Introduce una dialéctica presente ya en todo su evangelio: mientras los doctores de la Ley, expertos en las escrituras, no reconocen al Mesías, lo buscan los paganos. Y Jesús, rechazado por el pueblo de Dios, es adorado por los
gentiles. Y Dios, que busca a todos, les acepta y se les manifiesta. El nacionalismo judío cede el paso
al universalismo de la salvación, que se ofrece a todos. Primero a los pastores, los incultos, después
a los sabios, los magos. Jesús satisface todas las esperanzas de todos los hombres, judíos o griegos,
romanos o persas, o babilonios. Los marginados, y los pobres, socialmente despreciados, amados especialmente por El, y los cultos y poderosos.
Jesús es el rey que todos esperan, pero un rey humilde y oculto. Quien lo encuentra se llena de
alegría, lo adora como rey de su vida y se entrega a él, como los magos. Los regalos que le ofrecen,
son productos de países orientales, propios de los reyes.
4. Cuando nos parece que Dios calla, hay que saber que habla distinto lenguaje y no con palabras
humanas. Después de haber hablado por los profetas, nos ha hablado por Cristo "y se ha quedado mudo", (San Juan de la Cruz). Es urgente perder la rudeza y la grosería que nos incapacita para entrar
en su onda. Hay que afinar la sensibilidad para captar el lenguaje de Dios, para después ser dóciles a
su mensaje y estar dispuestos a soportar la Noche de la fe, que la purifica. Y hacerse espaldas unos a
otros, (Santa Teresa). Dios llama a tres hombres, para que se ayuden en la noche. Ese es el sentido
de la dirección espiritual y el vivir la fe en comunidad. Hay que acrecentar la confianza en Dios. Como la estrella no engendra la fe se oculta, porque la fe es fruto de la palabra, que está en Jerusalén.
Y hay que practicar la humildad buscando y preguntando, como los magos.
5. Al nacer el Sol de Justicia, los Evangelistas vieron cumplida esta profecía: "Reyes que buscáis estrellas, / No busquéis estrellas ya, / porque donde el Sol está, / no tienen luz las estrellas".
Ha nacido el Sol que, si es suave nos atrae a todos, pero no nos gusta que nos pida demasiado, que
queme el alma y el cuerpo en exceso. Intentamos domesticarlo y enjaularlo, para que no vuele tan
alto que no lo podamos alcanzar con nuestras manos, sino que lo podamos manejar a nuestro servicio. Que no nos pida más de lo que nosotros estamos dispuestos a darle.
Pero el Sol ha nacido para iluminar a todo hombre de esta tierra y quemar los pecados.
