Un certificado de depósito o un CD, es un
depósito a plazo fijo, un producto financiero
que se ofrece usualmente a los consumidores
en los Estados Unidos por medio de los bancos,
las cajas de ahorros locales y las uniones de
crédito. Los CD’s se parecen a las cuentas de
ahorros y por lo tanto están asegurados y así
prácticamente sin riesgo; son“money in the
bank”–“dinero seguro”.

While municipal aggregation of electricity has the potential to save people money, experts say the key is for consumers to
be well-informed before deciding what’s
best for them.
The referendum questions will read like
this: “Shall the village of XYZ have the authority to arrange for the supply of electricity for its residential and small commercial
retail customers who have not opted out of
such program?”
Voting “yes” means giving municipalities the power to seek bids from and switch
to any of the 25 or so retail electric suppliers certified by the Illinois Commerce
Commission and registered with ComEd

La primavera pasada, Joann Armenta, de
61 años y de Elgin, dijo que no podía lograr
caminar alrededor de la cuadra, pero ahora
camina 30 minutos, tres veces a la semana.
Su meta es incrementarlo a cinco días a la semana para el verano. ¿Qué cambió?
Este año ella decidió participar en el desafío Go Red For Women junto a otras seis
mujeres suburbanas que fueron elegidas para
una transformación en seis semanas de la salud de su corazón. El programa diseñado por
la Asociación Americana del Corazón (AHA),
junto con el hospital Provena Saint Joseph
busca educar a las mujeres acerca de los riesgos de las enfermedades del corazón a través
de pruebas de salud, clases semanales de nutrición en línea y rutinas de ejercicios.
“Tenemos que tomar las cosas con calma
y decidir lo que es realmente importante, y
cuidarse a uno mismo para poder cuidar de
otros”, dijo Armenta.
El padre de Armenta sufrió una serie de
ataques al corazón que comenzaron en sus
cincuentas y que eventualmente lo llevaron a
la muerte. Su madre, ahora de 75 años, ya ha
sobrevivido a un ataque cerebral y a un ataque
cardiaco.
“Porque me parezco a él, creo que heredé
mucho de sus condiciones de salud genéticas”, dijo Armenta, “Pensé, si no hago algo
mejor, podría ir por el mismo camino”.
De acuerdo con la Dra. Agnieszka Silbert,
directora médica del Women’s Heart Center
del hospital Provena Saint Joseph, la enfermedad del corazón es el asesino número uno
de las mujeres y la tercera causa principal de
muerte entre las mujeres hispanas. Las latinas también tienen las tasas más altas de factores de riesgo como la diabetes, la obesidad,

Armenta, quien es reconocida en su comunidad por convertirse en la primera policía
estatal de Illinois latina cuando tenía 28 años
de edad, está decidida a probarle a otras latinas que puede superar su predisposición genética y hábitos alimenticios poco saludables,
sin salirse de su presupuesto. Como parte del
programa, ella ha comenzado a compartir su
experiencia a través del blog Better U del hospital Provena Saint Joseph y se ha subscrito
para recibir consejos de Go Red Por Tu Corazón, un sitio Web de la campaña de AHA.
“He probado el programa de Seattle Sutton en donde empaquetan comida y
la envían, Weight Watchers, NutriSystem,
Slim-Fast, probé inscribirme a membresías

Health Department/Community
Health Center is encouraging those who
are in high-risk groups or provide services to those in high-risk groups to be
screened for TB.
It is important to get tested for TB, especially if you are at high risk. Although both
preventable and curable, each year nearly
two million people die of the disease. TB
disease is caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria can
attack any part of your body, but they usually attack the lungs. When first infected
with the TB organism, people usually do
not feel sick or have any symptoms.
There are, on average, 16 active cases
reported each year in Lake County. Most
of these individuals came from groups considered high risk. The Health Department’s
TB program provides a variety of clinicbased services, such as TB skin tests —
6,482 persons received skin tests in 2011
— X-rays, medications, physician evaluation and consultation, and health education.
Staff members also identify, find and treat
the family members and other contacts of
persons with TB disease. Such efforts help
prevent the transmission of tuberculosis
into the community.
High risk people include those in
contact with anyone infected with TB;
people who were foreign-born or travel
to Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe; and people associated with
nursing homes.
“While people tend to forget about TB
these days, it is still a worldwide epidemic
affecting more than 8 million people every
year,” said Irene Pierce, the Health Department’s Executive Director.

law, will be required to provide coverage for a variety of basic women’s health
services, including well woman visits; screening for gestational diabetes;
HPV testing; counseling for sexually
transmitted infections; counseling and
screening for HIV; and screening and
counseling for domestic violence. The
most controversial change involves the
Obama administration’s new rules on
contraceptive coverage, under which
women will be able to receive contraceptives without out-of-pocket charges.
• Under the health care overhaul,
insurers have to spend at least 80 to 85
percent of premium revenues on medical claims and quality improvement or
else rebate the difference to policyholders. In most group plans, that would
mean the employer.
• Beginning in September, at the
start of the open enrollment season, all
health plans will have to provide concise, consistent plan information aimed
at allowing consumers to easily understand their benefits and compare plans.
• The overhaul is slowly eliminating
the “doughnut hole.” This is the break
in Medicare prescription drug benefits
that begins after total drug spending
by the beneficiary and the health plan
exceeds $2,930 and continues until the
beneficiary has hit the $4,700 out-ofpocket limit.

For Reflejos
Royal Japanese Seafood Buffet is much
more than Japanese and seafood. In fact it’s
one of the largest buffet concepts I’ve come
across that offers an excellent value for an allyou-can-eat feast.
The well-spaced buffet stations are
grouped in different categories: sushi, complete with chefs making rolls on the spot;
cold salads; dim sum; hot stir-fried dishes,
most with a Chinese accent; a few American
favorites; and a dessert bar. At lunch, a Mongolian stir-fry station is thrown into the mix
while at dinner there’s a hibachi grill option.
We were greeted promptly after entering through a spacious lobby decorated with
a sprawling Asian mural and a fountain in
a converted strip mall building that once
housed a movie theater. It was crowded at a
peak meal time and sprinkled with quite a
few Asian diners — a good sign indicating we
could expect the food to be good.
We placed our drink order with our smiling waiter who invited us to explore the buffet. But where to begin? Being sushi lovers,
my companion and I started there. With too
many choices to count, we selected a few that
looked appealing, along with condiments like
fresh ginger, small plastic cups for soy sauce
and chopsticks, which were not on the tables
with the silverware.
Tables also lacked a “lite” or low-sodium
soy sauce alternative, so I flagged down our
waiter to ask for some, which he promptly
brought in a dipping cup. Consuming a lot of

regular soy sauce often leaves me quite thirsty
for awhile after a meal, so I’ve turned to the
low-salt variety.
Most of the choices had labels on top of
the glass partition identifying the main ingredients. Occasionally a label would be missing
or misplaced, so some knowledge of Asian
ingredients and how they look is helpful. The
rolls could be eaten in one bite — a good portion size allowing us to sample many more
foods.
Some of our favorites were a rainbow
roll with crab, avocado and cucumber; spicy
tuna; and one with salmon on top of crabmeat and cucumber.
I avoided those that included mayonnaise,
figuring that was an inauthentic American
addition that doesn’t improve the flavor.
I also avoided anything with “crab sticks,”
which are imitation crab usually made from
pollock.
The most logical way I found to approach
the buffet had us proceeding from sushi to
the cold salads or soups and sticking to choices throughout that are most authentically
Asian. The seaweed salad, for instance, was
properly crunchy and salty. The bean sprout
and carrot salad in a slightly sweet vinaigrette
also was good. The kimchee had its usual
heat, although without warning on the label
for the uninitiated. The spinach salad, how-

ever, was plain and flavorless.
Dim sum is not the restaurant’s strong
suit. Several bao (steamed buns) filled with
unlabeled sweet fruit pastes were dry. Sweet
sticky rice wrapped in a palm leaf was interesting and fun to unwrap. The steamed pork
pot stickers in won ton wrappers were my
favorite as they had good flavor and weren’t
too greasy.
At this point we already were feeling almost full but soldiered on to the hot foods.
Favorites here: tiny clams in black bean
sauce; ditto for mussels in black bean sauce,
both served on their shells; generous fillets
of nicely seasoned flounder, which had been
steamed and then sauteed; Chinese-style
barbecued pork ribs; and stir-fried long
beans and asparagus.
There were countless other temptations
in this section, including many Chinese stirfries, but we’ll have to come back another
time to try them. A tip: Select foods that are
still steaming or freshly put down on the

Saving a little room for dessert, we enjoyed some of the lighter choices, including
fresh fruit, sesame balls with a sweet fruit
paste inside and fried plantains. We found
the soft lychees — available peeled or unpeeled — to be an acquired taste. I observed
an Asian man eating a whole plate of them,
peeling every one, yet I couldn’t get past the
odd texture.
All in all, Royal Buffet is a place worth
visiting repeatedly, whether you’re an Asian
food expert or novice. And the value definitely can’t be beat.

Latinos at the SXSW Festival

Valenzuela, La Vida Boheme and Natalia Lafourcade are among the Latinos participating
in the South By Southwest Conference and
festival, whose film section took off Friday
with the world premiere of “The Cabin In The
Woods” and includes the projection of “La
Casa De Mi Padre,” starring Diego Luna, Gael
Garcia Bernal and American comedian Will
Ferrell acting entirely in Spanish.
The world’s largest music, film and technology festival, in its 26th edition, will offer
132 films of which 74 are world premieres,
17 North-American premieres, 11 American
premieres and 58 are debuts. With short
films, animated films and documentaries, it
amounts to a total of 275 movies.
Undoubtedly the musical section is the
motor of SXSW. The party includes for the
first time singer Lionel Richie, in a show
sponsored by Billboard magazine, as well
as Bruce Springsteen, who as the guest of
honor will give a speech and an intimate and
private concert.
Fans and industry people pay between 595
and 1,395 dollars to attend certain events, depending on each. But you don’t have to break
the bank to enjoy the festival: if space is available, organizers sell tickets for concerts and
films minutes before the start for 10 to 20 dollars. Better yet, there will be three days of free
concerts for the general public and outdoors.
Alicia Zertuche, coordinator of the Latin
music presented at the festival, has been responsible of having for the last few years
Latin-American artists in the event and she
believes there is still much to be done.
“There are more and more (Latino bands)
each time, as a result of a process of trying to
integrate an increased participation of countries, and we are looking at the first results,”
Zertuche said. “But what takes the most effort
is that some markets understand the importance of this festival. Some ask themselves,
‘Why should I invest to attend (SXSW) if my
band is doing well in my country?”
Some markets such as Spain and Brazil
have no problem in making the necessary
investment (air tickets, hotel) and year after year have a legion of artists representing
them. Other markets closer to Texas, especially Mexico and Colombia, are regular participants, but many are left behind, either because of economical issues or, simply, because
they don’t have a clear idea of the festival’s
significance.

mundiales, 17 estrenos norteamericanos, 11 estrenos estadounidenses y 58
debutantes. Con cortometrajes, cintas
animadas y documentales, la cifra asciende a un total de 275 películas.
Sin duda la sección musical es el
motor de SXSW. La fiesta incluye por
primera vez al cantautor Lionel Richie,
en un show patrocinado por la revista
Billboard, así como a Bruce Springsteen, quien como invitado de honor
ofrecerá una charla y un concierto íntimo privado.

That’s why so many people attend.”
Austin, a college city f, is known for its dozens of night clubs in its musical district. But
during the SXSW week, the noise and traffic
triples and hotels have no vacancies a couple
of months prior to the event.

Luna and Garcia Bernal lead satire in Spanish with Will Ferrell
MIAMI (AP) — Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal once again share credits in the big
screen, this time as a pair of rival drug dealers in “Casa De Mi Padre,” a comedy starring Hollywood supstar Will Ferrell, spoken
completely in Spanish and opening this
week, March 16, in the U.S.
In this western satire directed by Matt
Piedmont, to be shown with English subtitles, Ferrell portrays Armando, a cowboy
who has worked and lived his entire life in
Mexico in his father’s ranch (played by the
late Pedro Armendariz Jr. in one of his last
roles), and whom he despises and minimizes against his brother Raul (Luna), who
arrives with his fiancée Sonia (played by the
daughter of “El Puma” Jose Luis Rodriguez,
Genesis Rodriguez) to save the ranch from
bankruptcy.
Raul turns out to be a renowned drug
dealer who ends up facing the Onza (Gael
Garcia), the most important drug dealer in
the area. The story complicates even more
when Armando falls madly in love with Sonia
causing a confrontation between brothers.
“The support I got to be able to speak
Spanish was fantastic,” said Ferrell recently,
in English, during a friendly soccer match
between the Colombian and Mexican national teams at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami, where the main actors were also present promoting the film.
The comedian, who doesn’t speak Spanish
and who learned his lines phonetically, had
to practice very hard to bring the project forward. In fact, he acknowledged that the only
word he remembered in Spanish was “Chicharito”, an allusion to Mexican soccer player
Javier Hernandez, nicknamed this way.
He also highlighted the performance
of his Hispanic colleagues and said that
working with them was very significant
and rewarding.
And it’s just that despite Ferrell’s accent,
his Spanish is very convincing and with this
they achieved one of the main goals.
“Working in Spanish, for starters, is already crazy,” said Luna to the AP in a recent
interview. “Even though he (Ferrell) didn’t
want the only funny thing about the movie
to be him trying to speak Spanish, it is very
fun and worthwhile. This, mixed with the
different situations and the story itself, make
this a unique project.”
For this Mexican actor, one of the most
interesting aspects is to see who is behind
the project.
“It wasn’t something that occurred to
us in Mexico and we came looking for Will
to do it. It’s the other way around. This is a
project that occurred to him and his crew,
they wrote this movie where they make this
series of comments and they invited us to be
part of it,” he said.

“I liked the possibility of making a movie
so irreverent in so many ways. Besides, it
doesn’t look like anything done in this or
other countries. As a challenge, it attracted
me very much,” said Luna, adding that when
he read the script (by Andrew Steele) he felt
identified with elements that seemed very
attractive, which convinced him to participate in what he considered a high-risk job.
“As an actor, you rarely get this chance.”

Antes del juego del miércoles pasado, a
ambos entrenadores se les preguntó acerca
de la importancia de obtener la cabeza de serie de los playoffs — y ambos respondieron de
forma similar en jerga de entrenador.
“Yo creo que hay que poner tantas cosas
como sea posible a nuestro favor”, dijo el entrenador de los Bulls Tom Thibodeau. “Lo
más importante es, ir paso a paso. Esforzarse
por mejorar en cada partido y de nuevo, jugar
el mejor baloncesto al final de la temporada y
estar lo más saludables posible”.
Refutó Erik Spoelstra de Miami: “Lo más
importante para nosotros es jugar a nuestro
nivel más alto. Hace dos semanas, antes del
descanso, estábamos jugando a un nivel extremadamente alto.
Desde entonces, no hemos estado jugando a ese nivel, tanto en casa como de gira, y
esa es nuestra mayor preocupación, volver a
reencaminar nuestro juego contra un oponente de calidad”.
De frente a la acción del miércoles pasado,
los Bulls tenían una ventaja de un juego sobre Miami en la columna de derrotas para el
primer lugar en el este. Su ventaja era de 2½
partidos en general debido a que el Heat ha
jugado menos partidos.

on the road. The Bulls and Heat play
twice more in April.
The Bulls had homecourt advantage
last season and lost to Miami in the
Eastern Conference finals, so history
has proved finishing first is a limited
advantage. Miami entered the game
against the Bulls with 3 straight road
losses, so the Heat was concerned about
a trip that included games in Orlando,
Chicago and Philadelphia in a span of
four days. “Usually, I only know the
schedule until Sunday,” Chris Bosh said
in the Miami Herald. “But we’ve been
knowing this was coming — at least I’ve
been knowing this was coming — for a
while. It’s a big challenge.”

siendo objeto de críticas a medida que las

for that candidate and ask the client to

The mixed feelings among business leaders comes on the heel of various actions against some schools in
recent years. There have been investigations and lawsuits that have checkered their reputations.
“These kids get grants, federal loans
and private loans and the financing and
debt become unconscionable,” Madigan said. “They go into debt and have a
useless degree.” But, Madigan and other
experts agree that not all for-profit
schools are bad.
“Yes, there are two categories of
thought on for-profits. Some are more
in it for the profit while others are more
in it for the education,” said Dean DeBiase, CEO of Entertainment.com.
