Aunque todo en Burgos rezuma historia, leyenda y
arte, esta ciudad ha sido siempre un gran centro de
desarrollo, de comercio, de intercambio e interacción,
en definitiva, de actividad humana. Una ciudad
cosmopolita con vocación universalista (no en vano
fue uno de los centros comerciales más importantes
de Europa), que ha sabido preservar su herencia
histórica y cultural sin renunciar a la modernidad.

vocation (indeed it was one of the most important
commercial hubs in Europe); it has wisely preserved

concebida. Es un placer recorrer sus espacios verdes:

que atraviesa la ciudad: el Arlanzón.
Burgos is a modern city, without pressures or haste,
studded with walks, parks and gardens, with a
prevailing human scale in which it was conceived. It is a
pleasure to walk across its green areas: the
boulevards of La Isla, El Espolón and La Quinta, as well
as Fuentes Blancas Park, all articulated along the river
that crosses the city: the Arlanzón. Today Burgos is
immersed in a profound transformation process, not
only concerning its urban design, but also its culture
and tourism. The modification of its railway line, which
brought about the re-organisation of the traffic all
over the city centre, together with the creation of new
infrastructures, such as the Human Evolution
Complex, designed by the Cantabrian architect Juan
Navarro Baldeweg, have led to a decisive change in
the city’s appearance.
Actualmente Burgos se halla inmersa en un profundo
proceso de transformación, tanto urbanística como
turística y cultural. La modificación del trazado
ferroviario, que ha dado lugar a la reordenación del
tráfico en todo el centro urbano, junto a la creación de
nuevas infraestructuras, como el Complejo de la
Evolución Humana, obra del arquitecto cántabro Juan
Navarro Baldeweg, han supuesto un cambio decisivo
en la fisonomía de la ciudad.

médicas, empresas y organizaciones que se han

Burgos es una ciudad abierta a la cultura y a todo tipo
de actividades lúdicas y festivas. Además de la
programación estable del Teatro Principal,
dependiente del Instituto Municipal de Cultura,
muchas instituciones públicas y privadas organizan
exposiciones, festivales y certámenes que en
algunos casos alcanzan proyección internacional.
El auge notable del sector de la investigación, al contar
con centros como el CENIEH (Centro Nacional de
Investigación sobre Evolución Humana) o el CREER
(Centro Estatal de Atención a Personas con
Enfermedades Raras), la futura creación de otros
centros de investigación en el seno de la Universidad
de Burgos, la puesta en marcha del Parque
Tecnológico y del Hospital Universitario de Burgos y

infraestructuras, como el Palacio de Exposiciones y

Burgos is a city open to culture and all types of festive
and entertainment activities. Apart from the
scheduled programme of the Principal Theatre, under
the authority of the City Council’s Institute of Culture,
a good deal of public and private institutions organise
exhibitions, festivals and vents sometimes reaching
international projection.
The significant growth of the Research sector,
counting on centres like the CENIEH (National Centre
for Human Evolution Research), or the CREER
(National Health Care Centre for People with Weird
Diseases), the future creation of other research
centres within Burgos University, the opening of the
Technological Park and the University Hospital, as well
as the inauguration of new infrastructures such as the
Congress and Exhibition Centre, will certainly
contribute to the consolidation of the city ‘s focus on
hosting any type of event.

La Construcción de la Catedral de Burgos, declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la
Unesco por estar considerada como una de las cumbres del arte gótico europeo, se
inició durante la primera mitad del siglo XIII. Desde cualquier lugar del casco antiguo de
Burgos se divisa una hermosa y cambiante perspectiva de este singular, armonioso y
recién restaurado monumento. Lo que más llama la atención son las elegantes agujas
elevándose sobre los tejados de las casas. También merecen una detenida
contemplación las fachadas de Santa María, Coronería y Sarmental. Gracias a las
restauraciones de los últimos años , en su interior luce con todo su esplendor la
armoniosa combinación de estructuras arquitectónicas y elementos decorativos
incorporados a lo largo del tiempo a la primitiva fábrica gótica del siglo XIII.
The construction of the cathedral of Burgos (designated a World Heritage Site by
UNESCO thanks to its consideration as one of the prime examples of Gothic art in
Europe) began in the first half of the 13th century. From anywhere in the historical
centre of Burgos, visitors can enjoy a beautiful, changing view of this unique,
harmonious and recently restored monument. What immediately catches on lookers'
attention are the elegant spires that stand above the roofs of the houses. In addition,
the façades of Santa María, Coronería, Sarmental and Pellejería are worthy of more
than a brief examination. Thanks to the restoration work carried out over recent years,
inside it boasts the splendour of a harmonious combination of architectural structures
and ornaments incorporated over the years into the original 13th-century Gothic
design.

En Burgos, el Camino de Santiago se hace Castellano.
O lo que es lo mismo se rodea de un sobrio paisaje que
encarna la esencia fundamental del pueblo que forjó
uno de los reinos más importantes de la península
ibérica. Son 114 km que atraviesan la provincia de este
a oeste, siguiendo un equidistante pasillo entre la
cordillera cantábrica, al Norte y el río Duero al Sur. A su
paso se descubre un interesante conjunto
monumental que descansa sobre cuatro pilares
fundamentales: Belorado, el Monasterio de San Juan
de Ortega y la Villa de Castrojeriz.
La estratégica situación geográfica de la provincia
burgalesa hace de ella un paso obligado para los
millones de peregrinos europeos que desde sus
países de origen se dirigían a la búsqueda de la tumba
del Apóstol Santiago.
In Burgos, the Pilgrims’ Route to Santiago becomes
Castilian. In other words, it passes through a sober
landscape that represents the basic essence of the
people who forged one of the most important
kingdoms on the Iberian peninsula. The route crosses
the province over 114 km from east to west, following
a corridor that is in the middle of the Cantabrian
Mountain Range to the north and the River Duero to
the south. On its route, it passes by an interesting
collection of monuments based on four fundamental
pillars: the town of Belorado, the monastery of San
Juan de Ortega, the city of Burgos and the town of
Castrojeriz.
The strategic location of the province of Burgos
meant that it was passed through by the millions of
European Pilgrims who came from their countries of
origin in search of the tomb of James the Apostle (in
Spanish, Santiago)

Los Yacimientos Arqueológicos de Atapuerca son el
mayor foco de conocimiento mundial sobre la
evolución humana. Las excavaciones se iniciaron en
1978, pero hace más de dos millones de años
comenzó a escribirse en este enclave natural el
origen del hombre europeo, un relato inacabado y
fascinante que tiene aún muchas páginas por rellenar.
Declarados Patrimonio Mundial por la UNESCO en
2001, su proyección internacional y su importancia
científica traspasa generaciones. Las visitas guiadas a
los Yacimientos le permitirán conocer todos los
detalles de este viaje en el tiempo del hombre. Un
reencuentro con nuestros antepasados, ahí donde
empezó todo.
The Archaeological Excavation Sites of Atapuerca are
the greatest centre of human evolution research in
the world. The excavations started in 1978, but it was
more than 2 million years before when the origin of
European mankind began in this natural enclave. It is a
fascinating unfinished story with a lot of blank pages
yet to be written. Declared World Heritage Site by the
UNESCO in 2001, their international projection and
scientific relevance has remained over generations.
Guided visits to the excavation sites will allow you to
get to know the details of this journey of mankind
over the course of time. It will be a reunion with our
ancestors where it all commenced.

Museo de la Evolución Humana se ubica en el centro
de Burgos, en un edificio de nueva planta, obra del
arquitecto Juan Navarro Baldeweg que ha ideado una
caja de luz y de transparencia para albergar un espacio
mágico y diáfano que invita a adentrarse en él y a
dejarse atrapar por el relato de la evolución humana.
Se trata de un prisma con una superficie total de
15.000 m2, de los que la mitad se destinan a
exposición permanente y otros 2.000 m2 a espacio
público para la celebración de actividades culturales
de diversa índole. La evocación del paisaje de la Sierra
de Atapuerca queda patente en el exterior y en el
interior del edificio, de manera que su arquitectura se
vincula estrechamente al territorio y a la naturaleza,
marco referencial de toda la vida y depositaria de un
conocimiento que hay que excavar literalmente.
The Museum of Human Evolution is situated in the
centre of Burgos in a new building created by the
architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg, who has designed a
light-filled, transparent cube to house a magical,
diaphanous space that beckons visitors to come
inside and be caught up in the story of human
evolution. He building is shaped like a prism and has a
total floor area of 15,000 square metres. Half of this
area is given over to the permanent exhibition, and
another 2,000 square metres are set aside as a public
space for holding different types of cultural activities.
The landscape of the Sierra de Atapuerca is strongly
evoked both outside and inside the building, as the
architecture clearly reflects the territory and the
natural environment of this region – a timeless
landmark and a vast storehouse of knowledge that
must literally be dug out of the earth.

CARTUJA DE MIRAFLORES.
Esta monumental joya del gótico tardío, recientemente rehabilitada, fue fundada en el siglo XV por el rey
Juan II de Castilla, gracias a la donación que el propio
monarca realizó de un palacio de caza a la Orden de los
Cartujos. que ocuparon el inmueble hasta que un incendio lo destruyó. En 1454 se inició la construcción
del nuevo edificio, proyectado por Juan de Colonia,
obra que continuaría a su muerte su hijo, Simón de
Colonia. El impulso definitivo de las obras se produjo
con la llegada al trono de Isabel la Católica, que lo eligió
como panteón real de sus padres, los reyes Juan II e
Isabel de Portugal. Sus restos se custodian en dos lujosos sepulcros de alabastro esculpidos por el maestro
Gil de Siloé.
Fundado en 1189 por el rey Alfonso VIII y su esposa
Leonor de Aquitania, esta joya cisterciense se construyó como panteón sobre el emplazamiento de una
residencia de placer de los monarcas, llamada “Huelgas del Rey”, como panteón de reyes y para retiro espiritual de las damas de la alta sociedad y de la realeza.
Durante la Edad Media, en este monasterio se llevaban a cabo ceremonias tan importantes como las de
coronar reyes y armar caballeros. El inmueble, en el
que se fusionan elementos de la s culturas cristiana y
musulmana, se asemeja a una fortaleza a la que progresivamente se fueron añadiendo dependencias.
Su belleza arquitectónica queda especialmente patente en la iglesia, la sala capitular, el claustro de San
Fernando y las Claustrillas.

Founded in 1189 by King Alfonso VIII and his wife
Eleanor of Aquitaine, Cistercian jewel vault was built
as the site of a leisure residence of the monarchs, called "Strike King" as a pantheon of kings and retreat
the ladies of high society and royalty. During the
Middle Ages, the monastery took place as important
as the ceremony to crown kings and knights arm. The
building, which merged elements of Christian and
Muslim cultures s, resembles a fortress to which were
added gradually dependencies. Its architectural
beauty is particularly evident in the church, the chapter house, the cloister of San Fernando and the cloister.

This monumental late Gothic gem was founded in the
fifteenth century by King John II of Castile, with the donation that the monarch made a hunting lodge of the
Order of the Carthusians. who occupied the house until a fire destroyed it. In 1454 construction began on
the new building, designed by Juan de Colonia, work
would continue after his death his son, Simón de
Colonia. The final impetus for the work came to the
throne with the arrival of Isabel the Catholic, who elected him as a royal pantheon of his parents, King Juan II

La provincia de Burgos, origen de Castilla y cuna del

Burgos province, cradle of Castilla and Spanish language, is constituted by a real puzzle of peoples, monuments and singular corners. Most of them seem to
be touched by the magic of their exceptional natural
scenery, the personality of a unique history and the
grandeur of its universal art and culture. All this interesting mixture makes it possible for this extensive territory of Burgos to be deemed as one of those
Spanish geographic spaces with strongest character
and beauty in Spain.
Provincia de heterogéneos paisajes y gran diversidad
climática, su fisonomía está definida por tres grandes
áreas, una quebrada morfología en la zona norte por la
existencia de la cordillera Cantábrica; las altas cumbres de la sierra de la Demanda al sureste y la cuenca
del Duero al sur. Y es que Burgos posee uno de los hábitats naturales de mayor diversidad de todo el continente europeo.
A province of heterogeneous landscapes and noted
climatic diversity, its geography is defined by three big
areas, a gully morphology in the North due to the
Cantábrica Mountainous System, the high peaks of
Sierra de la Demanda in the Southeast and the river
Duero basin in the South. Indeed Burgos boasts one
of the most diverse natural habitats of the European
continent.

Land oozing history and legend, its varied towns are
full of churches, hermits, palaces, monasteries, towers and castles of all times and styles, that live together with impressive landscapes such as the canyons of the river Ebro and Rudrón, the national monument of Santiago and the Nervión Waterfall, the karst

Son numerosos los pueblos que conservan un inconfundible sabor medieval –Covarrubias, Frías,
Peñaranda de Duero, Oña, Santa Gadea del Cid–. Los
monumentos románicos diseminados por toda la provincia, la convierten en una de las mayores colecciones de arte medieval de toda Europa, cuyo máximo exponente es Santo Domingo de Silos. Innumerables
son también las localidades donde se puede admirar
una característica arquitectura popular en la que aún
reinan las más tradicionales formas constructivas.
A good deal of villages keep their unmistaken medieval savour – Covarrubias, Frías, Peñaranda de Duero,
Oña, Sata Gagea del Cid -. Also, their Romanesque monuments, scattered all over the province, make it one
of the biggest collections of medieval art in Europe,
with Santo Domingo de Silos as its greatest exponent.
Equally numerous are those towns where you can admire a characteristic popular architecture with prevailing most traditional constructive forms.

La riojilla burgalesa es una singular y fértil subcomarca
ribereña del río Tirón. Situada justo en el límite con la
comunidad autónoma de la Rioja por ella discurren los
primeros kilómetros del Camino de Santiago por

Un gigantesco y casi infranqueable anfiteatro montañoso rodea y aísla las tierras burgalesas de la Ribera
del Ebro y del Condado de Treviño. Desde siempre, las
únicas puertas de acceso a estas dos zonas naturales
han sido una serie de espectaculares y llamativos desfiladeros.
El canal de Castilla, que es la obra de ingeniería hidraúlica de mayor envergadura que se llevó a cabo en
