Gibraltar, a British territory at the southern tip of
Spain, is not the first place you would expect to find
an exclusive members club, but thanks to the enclave’s
status as an offshore haven and a leading financial
centre it has one of the highest concentrations of
millionaires in Europe.

ibraltar is a true product of history. Captured by
an Anglo-Dutch force during the 18th century Wars of
Spanish Succession, it has been a British crown dependency ever since. In this tiny territory, perched upon a spectacular
rocky peninsula half an hour west of Marbella, a cosmopolitan
population of traders and financiers thrive. Property is at a premium, luxury cars a common sight and in the marinas large yachts
lie alongside visiting frigates and cruise ships. Drawn above all by
its banking facilities and offshore status, Gibraltar is also home to a
community of international millionaires.
No matter that ‘The Rock’ has no golf courses and few resort
hotels – local residents have all the facilities of the nearby Costa del
Sol and Costa de la Luz on their doorstep – but with the opening of
exclusive private members club ‘55’ the need for a local venue that
offers privacy, comfort and service in the most elegant of surroundings has been satisfied. Recently opened, the club features state-ofthe-art facilities and an opulent décor that marks it out as the leading venue of its kind in the entire southern Spanish region.
A new design reference
Up to now Gibraltar has not been known for its outstanding design.
Apart from a few modern office towers and luxurious apartment
buildings overlooking the marina this is above all a place characterised by a quaint and rather colonial architectural style. With the
opening of ‘55’ The Rock has a leading design reference of its own
– and one to rival the best in Marbella. The fact that it is so is in no
way a coincidence, as the owners wanted nothing less than the very
best. The man brought in to create this private haven of style, exclusivity and leading edge design is Ben Nott of Blanco Architecture +
Design.
Settled in Marbella, from where he runs his international practice,
he brings to Europe the energy, creativity and passion of a golden
generation of young South African architects. A lover of clean, pure
design embellished with fine pieces from leading architects and
industrial designers, Nott received a dream commission when he
was appointed to turn an 18th century building in Gibraltar’s centre
into a stunning work of modern design and opulence where those
accustomed to the finest international clubs would feel at home.
“Creating a stylish design can be done on relatively tight budgets,”
says the architect, “but of course it makes a huge difference when
you have the means at your disposal to create something really
special.” With big budgets comes a lot of pressure to perform, not
just on the creative level but in a way that works. “The greatest

challenge was working to the confines of an 18th
century building. Gibraltar is very strict on architectural heritage and fire regulations, so we had
to keep adapting our original plans on an ongoing
basis, but it remains a more creative way of working than simply putting up a new structure.”
Skilled craftsmen were brought in to renovate old
finds such as the many arches, alcoves and pillars
that have since been incorporated into the contemporary décor of ‘55’. Requested to create an
environment of refinement and impact, Nott has
made this an address of note, where an understated exterior belies the treasures that await
inside. Members come in through a reception
area marked out by solid custom made panelling
and iconic pieces like Edra’s ‘fleur de lis’ shaped
Getsuen fauteuils and Corbeille sofa. Another objet
d’art is the Crystal Water chandelier by Brand van
Egmond, one of the architect’s favoured designers.
Custom-made meets designer collection
Among the many handmade pieces is the reception staff’s desk, designed by Nott personally and
made to measure by a team of English master
carpenters. Crafted from solid rosewood
and brushed steel, it is a design element
in its own right, but step into the hallway
that leads to the various lounges, bars and
restaurants on the building’s two levels, and
you come into contact with a magnificent
chrome and glass staircase imported from
Italy. Suspended above it is the magnificent
Ether 150S mouth-blown glass bubble chandelier by Murano Due – as featured in the
film Oceans Thirteen.
Upstairs, the VIP lounge is restricted to VIP
members only, featuring stunning sofas and
chairs made especially for this project by
design icons Cappellini, Edra and Leolux.
These sumptuous pieces form a slightly
retro modernist space accompanied by a
custom bar designed by Nott. “My brief was
to create an individual look and ambience in
each room, so no two areas are really the
same.” To get to the restaurant and private
conferencing room, for instance, you have to
walk through a copper tunnel fixed together
with 20.000 copper nails.
After this impressive feature you enter a
small bar area that belongs to a main restaurant whose décor is inspired by Botticelli’s
Birth of Venus, a detail of which covers a
Bisazza mosaic mural on the far side of the
room. Making the most of the perspective
created by the shape of the space, and the
allegorical references in the original painting,
Nott has added a sense of drama to this
otherwise clean, modern décor by painting
the 18th century recesses black and placing
backlit shells and anemones in them. White
chairs by Porada and amazing red ‘broombacked’ seats by Edra are further touches
of note.
The most accessible part of the club, the
ground floor bar, functions both as a daytime
wine bar set amid vaulted ceilings and rounded archways, and a night-time vodka bar
complete with changeable lighting structures,
ensuring that club members and their guests
can work, relax, meet and socialise within the
most distinguished of surroundings.

Exuberancia bajo
el signo del diseño
Gibraltar, un enclave británico en el punto más meridional
de la península ibérica, quizás no sea el primer lugar que viene
a la mente cuando se piensa en exclusivos clubs privados pero,
lo cierto es que gracias a su régimen tributario especialmente
favorable y a la amplia oferta de servicios financieros del más alto
nivel, esta pequeña Colonia ha logrado congregar un considerable
número de magnates europeos.

ibraltar está marcada por la historia. Conquistada
en el siglo dieciocho por un escuadrón angloholandés
durante la guerra de sucesión española, pasó a ser parte
de la corona británica. En ese pequeño trocito de tierra aferrado a
una formación rocosa espectacular y a media hora de coche al oeste
de Marbella, prospera una población cosmopolita de comerciantes y
banqueros. La vivienda es carísima, los coches de lujo abundan y en
la marina, fabulosos yates están atracados flanco a flanco con fragatas de visita y cruceros de paso.

caracterizaba más bien por su arquitectura de estilo colonial y pintoresco. Con la inauguración del Club 55, el Peñón ya tiene su propio
icono de diseño contemporáneo que compite con lo mejor de
Marbella. No es una mera coincidencia que así sea porque de hecho
fue lo que el dueño pidió: ni más ni menos: lo mejor. El arquitecto y
diseñador al que se le encomendó crear ese oasis privado de estilo,
exclusividad y de diseño audaz es Ben Nott de “Blanco Architecture
& Design”.
Especialmente atraídos por los servicios financieros impecables y el
estatuto de plaza “offshore” modélica, Gibraltar se ha convertido en
el lugar de residencia de una comunidad internacional de millonarios.
Con base en Marbella desde donde lleva su estudio cosmopolita,
Ben Nott ha traído a Europa la energía, la creatividad y la pasión
de la generación de oro de los jóvenes arquitectos sudafricanos.
Un amante del diseño limpio y puro, embellecido con objetos de
arte creados por arquitectos y diseñadores industriales, se encontró
con su proyecto soñado cuando le encomendaron transformar un
edificio del siglo dieciocho en el corazón de Gibraltar en un lugar
emblemático de diseño contemporáneo y elegante donde los clientes acostumbrados a los más refinados círculos internacionales se
sintieran deleitados.“Se puede crear algo con estilo con un presupuesto relativamente ajustado” - dice el arquitecto - “pero lo cierto
es que cuando se dispone de los medios adecuados se puede realmente crear algo fabuloso”.
No tiene importancia que el Piñón no ofrezca campos de golf y
solo tenga pocos hoteles porque en el fondo los residentes gozan
de la amplia oferta de las cercanas Costa del Sol y Costa de la Luz.
Sin embargo, la llegada del Club privado 55 colma la necesidad del
enclave de ofrecer un lugar selecto donde encontrar privacidad,
confort y un servicio impecable en un ambiente sofisticado y elegante. Sus modernas instalaciones y su diseño opulento y a la vez
delicado hacen que el recién inaugurado club destaque y sea una
referencia innegable en todo el sur de España.
Una nueva referencia para el diseño
Hasta el momento Gibraltar pasaba inadvertido en cuanto a diseño.

inesperado. El hall de entrada que acoge
los socios ofrece una impecable “boiserie”
hecha a medida y unas piezas icónicas
del diseño contemporáneo, como por
ejemplo las butacas “Fleur de lis” y el sofá
“Corbeille” ambos de Edra. Otra obra de
arte es el candelabro “Crystal Water” de
Brand van Egmond, unos de los diseñadores favoritos del arquitecto.

es sumamente estricta cuando se trata de
monumentos históricos así que nos obligó a
retocar los planos originales y aportar modificación sobre la marcha. Sin embargo esos
continuos cambios hicieron que el proyecto
fuera mucho más creativo que simplemente
implantar una estructura nueva sin más”.
Trabajadores especializados fueron reclutados para restaurar arcadas, bóvedas y pilares
que se fueron descubriendo e incorporando
a la decoración vanguardista del Club 55. A
la petición de plasmar un ambiente refinado
y a la vez impactante, Ben Nott ha creado
un lugar de notable belleza donde la sobria
fachada exterior esconde un interior de lujo
De las muchas piezas hechas a medida destaca el escritorio de la recepción. Diseñado
por Ben Nott personalmente, ha sido forjado de las manos expertas de maestros carpinteros ingleses. Entallado en madera de
rosa y ensamblado con acero pulido, se ha
convertido en un elemento de diseño con
fuerza propia. Cruzada la recepción se llega
a una recogida área que da acceso a varios
ambientes y allí nos sorprende, magnifica e
imponente, una escalera de acero y cristal
con una estructura de formas orgánicas y
sinuosas, directamente importada desde el
corazón de Italia. Suspendido en el vano de
la escalera, la lámpara “Ether” de Murano
Due, un candelabro compuesto por una
cascada de burbujas de cristal sopladas a
boca, una pieza que también se eligió para que
saliese en la película “Ocean’s Thirteen”.
En la primera planta, se encuentra la zona VIP
a la cual solo pueden acceder socios selectos y
sin duda alguna, selectas también son las piezas
que se han elegido para ese espacio excepcional: sólo hay que nombrar algunas de las casas
de diseño italianas que se han utilizado como
Cappellini, Edra y Leolux. Esas piezas suntuosas
crean un espacio con un toque retro-modernista y están acompañadas por un espectacular
bar ondulado diseñado por Ben Nott. “Mi
intención era crear espacios diferentes que
tuviesen una sinergia entre sí pero que a la vez
fueran singulares. Prueba de esa búsqueda de
originalidad es que para ir de la “VIP lounge”
al restaurante se cruza por un túnel de cobre.
Formado por innumerables piezas de ese
metal fijadas con veinte mil clavos de la misma
liga e iluminado desde el techo, el túnel es otra
obra maestra en esa catedral del arte.
El túnel nos lleva al restaurante principal que
está inspirado y marcado por “El nacimiento
de Venus” de Botticelli. El arquitecto usa la
perspectiva generada por un espacio extremadamente alargado y lleva todos los sentidos
del visitante a la pared del fondo que está
enteramente revestida por un mosaico
extraordinario de la casa Bisazza que retrata el rostro de Venus en toda su belleza y
sensualidad. Utilizando al máximo el efecto
alegórico del cuadro original, Ben Nott ha
sabido añadir un toque dramático a ese
espacio limpio y de decorado moderno pintando las bóvedas de las ventanas en negro
y colocando en ellas conchas y anémonas
iluminadas con luz indirecta. El toque final lo
da la combinación de sencillas sillas blancas
de Porada con las extravagantes sillas rojas
de Edra con el respaldo de astillas semejante
a un campo de trigo.
La zona más inteligible del club es el bar en
la planta baja. Marcado por arcos y bóvedas
rescatados de la estructura original esa zona
funge de bar de copas durante el día y vodka
bar durante la noche. El juego de luces LED
que varía de colores y tonalidades garantiza
poder crear ambientes diferentes donde los
socios puedan trabajar, relajarse, reunirse e
interactuar en el ambiente más sofisticado
y propicio.
