CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEW
VICAR FORANE
Please join me in congratulating our Pastor, Fr. Anthony Dao, on his recent appointment to Vicar Forane for the Hemet Vicariate. A Vicar Forane, chosen and appointed by the
Bishop, is a priest appointed to promote pastoral activity in a particular vicariate of the diocese and to provide spiritual and pastoral counsel to the other priests, parishioners, and the
local community.
The term “Vicar Forane” comes from Latin (vicarious), meaning a representative
who was considered a delegate of the bishop outside of the cathedral city, and "one who
stands in the place of" the Bishop outside of the cathedral city. It pretty much means the same
today. History tells us that the office of Vicar Forane probably dates back to the fourth century when Christianity began to spread beyond the major cities to rural areas. This created a
need to send representatives to these outlying communities which had embraced the faith,
and bishops would send their representative with special delegation and responsibilities to
give oversight in the region and who also was in charge of communication between the bishop and the local priests.
Today, this results in a pastoral renewal including the Vicar Forane as a pastoral office
and as a way to bring priests together in order to promote and direct a common pastoral activity in a particular area.
Fr. Anthony will of course remain Pastor at St. Catherine of Alexandria and we appreciate all Fr. Anthony has done for us and will continue to do so in his new office. Thank you
for all the continued support you have given him.

Day of Prayer, September 9, 2016
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has established this Friday, September 9,
2016, as a Day of Prayer for Peace in our Communities. Recent months of escalating violence
continues to gravely harm our local communities. As people of faith we turn to the power of
prayer to shine the light of Christ into areas of darkness. We ask that you light a candle in your
home on Friday, September 9 to unite your family in prayer for peace in our communities. Do
not forget as a family to offer the prayer for peace. May we never tire in promoting and seeking peace!
Peace Prayer
September 9, 2016
Loving God of peace and justice, help
us be at peace. Peace and love are
always alive in us, but we are not
always alive to peace and love. May
Christ’s peace dwell within our hearts,
in the words we speak and in the
actions we take.
We desire to be a peaceful people.
Strengthen our efforts to live in
harmony, loving one another in peace
as we work for justice in our world.
We ask this through Christ our Lord,
our loving Savior and the Prince of
peace. Amen.
Reflection Question
What is one specific action
you can incorporate into
your life which will help
you to become a person of
peace?
Oración por la Paz
Septiembre 9, 2016
Dios amoroso de paz y de justicia,
ayúdanos a estar en paz. La paz y el
amor están siempre vivos en nosotros,
pero nosotros no siempre estamos vivos
para la paz y el amor. Que la paz de Cristo
more en nuestros corazones, en las
palabras que pronunciamos y en nuestros
hechos. Deseamos ser un pueblo pacífico.
Fortalece nuestros esfuerzos por vivir
en armonía, amándonos los unos a los
otros en paz mientras procuramos la
justicia en nuestro mundo. Te lo pedimos
por Cristo nuestro Señor, nuestro Salvador
amoroso y el Príncipe de la paz. Amen.
Pregunta pare reflexión
¿Cuál es una acción específica o práctica que puede incorporar en su vida que le
ayudará a convertirse en una
persona de paz?
Have you heard about
Little Church?
Beginning September 11th at the 10am mass
BEgi
As kids, we grew up knowing that we were an important part of the church. From about
four to six years old, some of us were active in the church’s ministry. Maybe on Sunday
mornings we would stand by the front door with our dad or mom, welcoming people and
handing out bulletins, or opening the doors as people entered. As we grew up, and having children of our own, we may again wonder what can my four, five or six year old do
to make their Church experience more exciting and more fruitful....
"Little Church" may be the answer.
"Little Church Ministry" will focus on being the Body of Christ, and as kids, they will
learn that they are valuable members. The impact of Little Church ministry will be felt
for many years to come. Even during the week, it will continue to have a Kingdom of
God impact on their lives. It's not unusual for children to move between Little Church
and into a parish religious education program at 7 years old, seamlessly and productively as they will already have the "real Church" experience.
If you have a child or children between the ages of four to six years old, you can play a
vital role in building the Kingdom of God. Little Church can reach your children in
ways that the large Church can’t... What is important is that your child first learns about
God, his or her Church, family, and how they fit into the spiritual life.

Little Church is not childcare but a Mass driven program to offer both the experience
of the little and the big Church. It is offered during the 10:00 am Sunday Mass for
children between the ages of 4 and 6years. But it is much more than simply a gathering of children...Little Church introduces pre-kindergarteners to Jesus Christ through
prayer, scripture, story and song. While their parents are listening to the Word of God
at Mass, at Little Church the children hear these same Scripture readings in a fun, interactive and engaging way.
For more information please see the Faith Formation/ Family Evangelization page...

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Rev. Anthony Dao, Pastor
Sometimes, this “Treasures” column can seem to be a
species of crib-notes for Catholic Jeopardy. Indeed, you may
never know when knowledge of our particular vocabulary
may come in handy. Such is the case with papal bulls, which
conjure up all sorts of images, but are actually not what you
might expect. A bull is a papal letter on a matter of great consequence, such as a decision about a crisis in the Church, the
declaration of a doctrine, the summoning of a council, or the
canonization of a saint. It has a more solemn intention than a
mere letter or even an encyclical, a teaching letter circulated
through the whole Church. Its odd name comes from the Latin bulla, which is the stamp used to apply a signatorial design
to the hot lead, or even molten silver or gold, that seals the
decree.
The format for the bull is the name of the pope in Latin,
followed by the title “servant of the servants of God,” also in
Latin, and then the text. The title of the bull is always the
first two words of the text. Some famous papal bulls are
Exsurge Domine (Arise, O Lord), written against Martin Luther’s Ninety-five Theses in 1520; Munificentissimus Deus
(The Most Bountiful God), the promulgation of the dogma of
the Assumption in 1950 by Pope Pius XII; or Humanae Salutis (Human Salvation), by which Pope John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council in 1962.
