FYI: November 6, 2016 – 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
XXXII Domingo Ordinario – 6 De Noviembre De 2016
This weekend we welcome the Most Rev. Gerald Barbarito, the
Bishop of Palm Beach who will join us to celebrate the Noon Mass.
Several weeks ago, the bishop’s secretary, Fr. Brian King, called
and said that the Bishop would like to come and visit. Normally,
the Bishop is here to celebrate Confirmation, but it is certainly
nice to have him here just to be with us during a normal Sunday
Liturgy.
venir a visitarnos.
Last Tuesday and Wednesday, we celebrated the Solemnity of All
Saints and the Commemoration of All Souls respectively. When I was
growing up, the Sisters taught that the Church was divided into three
sections: The Church triumphant, The Church suffering and the
Church militant. The Church triumphant are those who have died and,
we believe are in heaven. They enjoy the beatific vision and enjoy
eternal paradise. The Church suffering are those who have died but
are in purgatory. It is a place of final purification and cleansing before
entering the heavenly kingdom. Finally, The Church militant are those
still living on this earth. We are on a pilgrimage to the Kingdom
following in the footsteps of Jesus the Lord.
The Readings for this weekend focus not only on this life, but on the
life to come. We, as Christians, believe that death is not the end of
life, but its change. When we die, we meet the Lord and are judged
according to our merits. This is called the particular judgment. Since
no living person has experienced the particular judgment, we can only
speculate what it must be like. Personally, I believe that when we die,
we meet the Lord as He is. I believe that our entire life is unfolded
before us. At this judgment, there is no past or future, but only
present. We see ourselves as God sees us and we are transformed. If
we have led lives of virtue and holiness, if we have been people of
sacrifice and penance, if we have loved and honored God with all our
hearts, souls, mind and strength and have loved our neighbors as
ourselves, we are invited to inherit heaven. If we have led lives that
essentially were lives of virtue and holiness, but there was a need of
final improvement or tweaking needed, we are sent to purgatory
where the imperfections are weeded out like gold purified by fire. If
we have led lives devoid of God, or we have shunned Him or not loved
Him, if we have turned our back on God. If we have done evil in
God’s sight, put other things in place of God, not loved God and
neighbor as He commands, and have no sorrow, no repentance no
conversion, then most probably by our own actions, we may end up in
hell.
We, as Christians believe in the resurrection of the dead. All of us will
rise on the last day for the general judgment. Some will as Scripture
says, enjoy the Resurrection of the Just. Some will suffer the
Resurrection of the Condemned.
hemos sacrificados y hecho penitencia, si hemos amado y honrado a
Cristo.
Many of you have remarked that you are edified that I end every
homily and FYI with the phrase, Brothers and sisters, while we have
time, let us do good. This phrase is not just a pious platitude, but an
admonition, to do good, since none of us know the day nor the hour
when we will be summoned before the judgment seat of Christ.
Brothers and sisters, while we have time, let us do good. ~ Fr. Dan
Hermanos y hermanas, mientras tengamos tiempo, hagamos el
bien – Padre Dan
