spirit to introduce new shoots of creativity and new concepts.
In this issue, we take a leisurely stroll through the most important trade
fairs, discovering the latest trends and we relax in hotels whose charm is
beyond the realms of traditional hospitality.

Born in 1949 in Paris, Starck’s childhood
was heavily influenced by his father
who was an inventor and aeronautical
engineer. In 1969, Starck founded a
design company which he later art
directed with Pierre Cardin. Starck’s
career really took off in 1982 when he
was commissioned by French President,
Francois Miterrand to design some
private apartments. After that, he worked
as an independent interior designer
winning contracts such as Target
Stores, Microsoft and the Virgin Galactic
spaceport.
Nacido en 1.949 en París, la infancia
de Starck está fuertemente marcada
por la figura de su padre, inventor e
ingeniero aeronáutico. Ya en 1.969,
Starck funda una empresa de diseño,
que posteriormente co-dirigiría con
Pierre Cardin. Pero es en 1.982 cuando
la carrera de Starck realmente despega,
al ser designado como comisionado
por el presidente François Mitterrand
para el diseño de algunos apartamentos
privados. Tras ello, trabajó como
diseñador de interiores independiente,
consiguiendo contratos como las tiendas
Target, Microsoft y el puerto espacial de
Virgen Galactic.

La fachada del Hotel Sanderson
es modesta, pero una vez en su
interior, el visitante se adentra en
un mundo de sueños y fantasía
que transmite lujo, humor y
extravagancia. El hotel combina
elementos modernos y clásicos,
capaces de crear un oasis único en
medio de la locura del West End de
Londres.
When Starck designs, he takes people out of the
real world and puts them into a surreal, exciting and
unforgettable place. He considers himself as somebody
who has naturally become an architect and designer
and who simply “tries to help you have a better life”.
The hotels and restaurants that he designs always
become worldwide iconic landmarks. His desire for
“democratic design” offering quality at lower prices
allowing everyone to enjoy the best, raised eyebrows
as design was considered only for the elite but this was
soon embraced when Starck relentlessly strived on
regardless. Before eco-friendly design became popular,
Starck made his designs to be environmentally friendly
and even set up his own organic food company. He
later developed the idea of a “democratic ecology” by
creating domestic wind turbines, solar-powered boats
and hydrogen-powered cars.

del mundo real para introducirle en un lugar surrealista,
emocionante e inolvidable. El se considera a sí mismo
como alguien que, de forma natural, se ha convertido
en arquitecto y diseñador y que simplemente “intenta
ayudarte a tener una vida mejor”. Los hoteles y
restaurantes que él diseña siempre se acaban
convirtiendo en lugares emblemáticos en todo el
mundo. Su deseo de un “diseño democrático” que
ofrezca calidad con costes bajos permite que todo el
mundo disfrute de lo mejor, el diseño sorprendente
estaba considerado como elitista hasta que Starck,
en su incansable lucha, trajo la independencia.
Antes de que el diseño ecológico se hiciera popular,
Starck ya realizaba diseños respetuosos con el

Sanderson Hotel, London
The exterior of the Sanderson Hotel is unassuming
from the outside but when you walk in, you enter a
world of dreams and fantasies oozing luxury, humour
and quirkiness. The hotel combines modern and classic elements to create a unique oasis in the middle
of all the craziness of London’s West End. The Purple Bar, offers a totally different feel. On entering the
bar you are hit with a number of shades of purple
with violet silk opera curtains, lavender Queen Anne
chairs and etched Venetian mirrors. It is a dark and
almost regal setting though at the same time it is cosy
and intimate which is probably why this venue is a
real hit with the London jet-set who go to sip cocktails
and enjoy the magical way that this room has been
designed. With a similar colour scheme, The Billiard
Room is also a very whimsical place with stainless
glass windows designed by John Piper and a remarkable chair sporting a pair of antlers. There are a
number of different types of rooms to choose from
but the Penthouse is certainly a notable room. It
is a unique collection of custom furnishings, including handwoven rugs inspired by a 15th century
painter, Filippino Lippi. There are no walls so the
bathroom and dressing room are surrounded in a
lit glass box that goes from the floor to the ceiling
covered in layers of sheer curtains.

totalmente diferente. Al entrar en el
bar se experimenta una explosión
de matices púrpura, con cortinas de
estilo ópera en seda violeta, sillas
de estilo Queen Anne en tonos
lavanda y espejos con grabado
veneciano.
Es un ambiente
oscuro, apenas real, y al mismo
tiempo íntimo y acogedor, que es
probablemente por lo que este lugar
es un éxito y la jet-set londinense
lo ha elegido para sus cócteles y
disfrutar del mágico diseño de esta
estancia. Con una combinación de
colores similares, la Sala de Billar
es también un caprichoso lugar,
con acristalamiento inoxidable
diseñado por John Piper y una
llamativa silla decorada con un par
de cuernos.
Hay un gran número de distintos
tipos
de
habitaciones
para
elegir pero, sin duda, el ático es
ciertamente la más destacable. Se
compone de una colección única
de muebles realizados a medida,
incluidas las alfombras tejidas a
mano e inspiradas en el pintor del
siglo XV Filipino Lippi. No existen
paredes, por lo que el baño y el
vestidor están envueltos por una
caja de cristal iluminado que va del
suelo al techo, cubierto por capas
de cortinas transparentes.

RAMSES CLUB. LIFE & FOOD
Ramses, which opened its doors in December 2007,
is a bar, restaurant and club sprawling three floors
situated in the centre of Madrid.
The Petit room is a fascinating dining room and is very
unique in its concept sharing the same floor as the
Cocktail Bar. Only Starck could create a room that is so
luxurious combining “street” with chic. The room is very

urban with dimly lit walls and a ceiling covered in white
chalked graffiti. In contrast, the furniture is elegant with
lavish candelabras and heavy, elegant baroque chairs.
The Cocktail Bar also continues the baroque theme
with an island-style bar in the centre of a light and
airy room with varying chairs surrounding it. The Club
downstairs continues the graffiti theme with high-tec
lighting.

Ramsés, que abrió sus puertas en Diciembre de 2.007
en el centro de Madrid, es un bar, restaurante y club que
se extiende en tres plantas.
La sala Petit es un comedor fascinante y único en
su concepto, que comparte la planta con el bar de
cócteles. Solamente Starck podría crear un ambiente
tan lujoso combinando “street” y “chic”.
La estancia es muy urbana, con paredes tenuemente
iluminadas y un techo cubierto de graffities en tiza
blanca. Como contraposición, el mobiliario es elegante,
con lujosos candelabros y sillas barrocas. El bar de
cócteles también sigue el estilo barroco, con una barraisla en el centro de una sala amplia y luminosa, rodeada
de diferentes tipos de sillas. El Club de la planta baja
continúa con el tema del graffiti, con una iluminación de
alta tecnología.

The Bistro is more modern and is
situated on the top floor serving haute
cuisine influenced by traditional
“Madrileño” cooking. There are
various rooms all individually
designed for private dining for
example, one of the rooms is styled
with Greek drapes hanging from the
ceiling contrasted with bare brick
walls whilst another room is totally
different in style with clean, elegant
white walls surrounding a light and
airy room. One of the private rooms
even has its own private kitchen
and chef.

foot recording studio
situated on Sunset
Blvd. in Hollywood, is
the global headquarters
for leading sound-ware
development. There are
six studios in total and
have undergone a multimillion dollar reform by
Philippe Starck housing

renovating the studio,
not only were we
looking to preserve
history but we were
looking to create a
whole new creative
environment for both
our virtual instrument
productions and for the
artists the studio hosts.
Every visual element
in the entire building is
designed to accomplish
these goals.”

same time respected
the incredible work that
has been accomplished
within it. In the reception
area, visitors are greeted
by a large curtain drape
making you feel like you
are entering a stage.

EASTWEST STUDIOS, HOLLYWOOD
Este estudio de grabación de veintiún mil pies
cuadrados ubicado en Sunset Boulevard (Hollywood)
es la sede mundial de desarrollo de sonido. Consta
de un total de seis estudios y ha sido objeto de una
reforma a cargo del talento de Philippe Starck, en
la que se han invertido varios millones de dólares,
convirtiéndose en hogar de la música y ofreciendo
inspiración a cuantos visitan estas instalaciones de
última generación.
Doug Rogers, fundador y productor de Eastwest, trata
de insuflar nueva vida a este “templo del sonido” para

la nueva generación de artista. “Cuando decidimos
renovar el estudio, no sólo buscábamos preservar la
historia, sino que buscábamos crear un nuevo ambiente
totalmente creativo, tanto para nuestras producciones
instrumentales virtuales como para los artistas invitados
por el estudio. Cada elemento visual en todo el edificio
se ha diseñado para alcanzar este objetivo”
Starck ha respetado los elementos históricos del
edificio, tanto en el interior como en el exterior. En
el área de recepción, los visitantes son recibidos por
una gran cortina que crea la sensación de adentrarse
en otro nivel sensorial.

Starck designed a VIP suite
upstairs,
complete
with
a
personal
entrance,
cabana,
fireplace, large terrace, lounge
area with pool table and a private
bathroom and shower. He also
designed three artist lounges on
the ground floor. Above these
lounges are mezzanine floors
joined by bridges for the software
engineers and there is a fullyequipped kitchen and lounge
area. Starck covered large walls
covered with blackboard paint to
encourage artists in the facility to
add their own “art” to the walls to
keep creative ideas flowing. His
daughter, Ara Starck, a painter,
put her stamp on the kitchen
doors and later, a graffiti artist
added to her work.
Starck explains, “When I first
saw Eastwest studios it was my
absolute dream to work on this
project because I thought about
this famous recording studio’s
history and its purpose which is
to make quality music. I listen
to music while I’m planning
out my designs and I feel that
my inspiration comes from the
quality of the artist’s music, so
sound is very important to me in
this space. I’m astonished when
I visit various studios, whether
they are recording or for radio,
at how they look. You ask people
to be at their best and to dream
about things in a rat hole. They’re
spending 12-plus hours in these
small spaces that smell and have
practically no light - it’s ridiculous.
I don’t need a lot but I can’t work
like that. I wanted to make this
place very human with big areas
and small areas where people
can find a place that makes
them feel comfortable. There is a
lounge where people can meet,
a kitchen and restrooms that are
all comfortable, hopefully it’s my
small contribution to some great
music in the future.”

personal, cabaña, chimenea, terraza
y sala de estar con mesa de billar,
así como un cuarto de baño privado
con ducha. También diseño 3 salas
para artistas en la planta baja. Sobre
estas tres salas hay unos entresuelos
unidos por puentes destinados a los
ingenieros de software, una cocina
totalmente equipada y una sala de
estar. Starck recubrió los grandes
muros con pizarras para alentar a
los artistas a manifestar su propio
arte en las paredes y mantener el
flujo creativo. Su hija, la pintora
Ara Starck, dejó su impronta en las
puertas de la cocina y posteriormente
se añadió el trabajo de un artista del
graffiti.

Starck declara: “Cuando vi por primera
vez los estudios Eastwest, mi sueño
absoluto era trabajar en este gran
proyecto porque pensé en la historia
de este famoso estudio de grabación
y en su finalidad, que es hacer música
de calidad. Escucho música mientras
estoy proyectando mis diseños y
siento que mi inspiración viene de la
calidad de la música del artista, así
que el sonido es muy importante para
mí en este espacio.
Me quedo atónito cuando visito
estudios, ya sean de grabación o
de radio, por su aspecto. Se le pide
a la gente que den lo mejor y que
sueñen con cosas en una ratonera.
Ellos pasan más de 12 horas en esos
pequeños espacios malolientes y con
prácticamente ninguna luz, esto es
ridículo. Yo no necesito demasiado,
pero no puedo trabajar en esas
condiciones.
Quise hacer este
espacio muy humano, con grandes y
pequeñas áreas en las que la gente
pudiera encontrar un lugar que les
haga sentir cómodos. Hay un salón
donde pueden reunirse, una cocina
y un baño que son muy cómodos,
espero que esta sea mi pequeña
contribución a la buena música del
futuro.

Este exclusivo restaurante, a tan solo cinco minutos del Ramsés, es la
primera conquista de PHILIPPE Starck en España. Ubicado en el antiguo
edificio del teatro Infanta Beatriz - construido en 1.923 - el restaurante
Teatriz es un desafío para Starck, encargado de convertirlo en uno de los
restaurantes principales de Madrid.
Starck ha trabajado fielmente sobre el diseño original del teatro. Consta
de tres áreas: el bar de tapas, con carácter informal, que ofrece auténticas
delicias gastronómicas, el restaurante principal, que se encuentra en la
localización del antiguo auditorio, incluyendo una barra que se sitúa en el
área del escenario del antiguo teatro y el lounge bar en la segunda planta.
Los baños son muy diferentes de la zona del comedor en términos de
iluminación y diseño ya que son muy luminosos y modernos, con iluminación
LED de colores y grandes lavabos metálicos, adornados con una grifería
en forma de largos cuellos de cisne que sobresalen desde el suelo.

RESTAURANT TEATRIZ
This unique restaurant just five minutes down the road from Ramses Life And Food
is the first of Philippe Starck’s conquests in Spain. Restaurante Teatriz is housed
in the building of the former Infanta Beatriz theatre built in 1923 where Starck was
commissioned to make it into Madrid’s flagship restaurant.
Starck has worked closely with the original design of the theatre. There are three
areas, the more informal tapas bar offering authentic gastronomic delights, the main
restaurant which is located where the stalls would have been including a bar which is
situated on the stage area in the old theatre and the lounge bar on the second floor.
The toilets are very different from the main dining area in terms of illumination and
design as they are very light, modern with coloured LED lighting and large ornate
sinks with long metal swan-neck taps that stick out from the ground.

The Zeppelin S1 chandelier

Creative lighting can enhance even the simplest design Features
- poor lighting can wash out colour and texture and make a
room look less than ordinary. However, lighting is more than just
the concept of light, it is a crucial element of design but is often
overlooked. In many of the famous furniture shows such as Milan,
London and New York lighting occupies a large part of the floor
and up to the minute creations as well as classic designs.

Designers over recent times have all gone out to create something different such
as chandeliers made from natural elements like silk, feathers, honeycombs and
even simple cotton buds.
The Zeppelin S1 chandelier by Marcel Wanders for Flos is an updated version
of the cocoon series initially done for Flos in 1960 by the Castiglioni brothers.
This suspension lamp provides diffused light with a faceted crystal globe located
at the lower centre for a sparkle effect.

British designer Tom Dixon continued the adventure
in lighting with his collection “Utility”, which uses some
of the most basic and primitive of materials rethought
for the modern age. An impressive 52 cm wide “Stout”
pendant is part of the Beat Lights family. This popular
design marks the resurgence of interest in hand made
designs. Taking inspiration from Tom Dixon’s travels
around the globe, “Stout’” is made from hand-beaten
brass reviving the rapidly vanishing skills of Indian
master craftsmen. The exterior of the beaten brass is
coated with a matt black finish in contrast to the warm
golden interior. The light can be hung as a cluster
with other Beat Lights or alone creating an impressive
design statement.

iluminación con su colección “Utility” en la cual hace uso de
algunos materiales básicos y primitivos que se incorporan a
la época moderna. La espléndida lámpara colgante ‘Stout’

Beat Lights. Este diseño popular da pie al resurgimiento
del interés por los diseños hechos a mano. Tom Dixon
se inspiró en sus viajes por el mundo y creó la ‘Stout’

impresionante paisaje de la Cordillera Andina, el
nuevo Templo está llamado a ser la cristalización de la
luz como expression, una estructura evanescente de
alabastro blanco y cristal: un espacio de luminiscencia
pura. Durante el día, la suave ondulación del alabastro
y el cristal que conforman la piel del Templo configuran
esta expression exterior. En la noche, la imagen se
traspone y la plenitud del volumen se convierte en un
cálido flujo brillante que permite entrever la estructura
interna del edificio a través del cristal.

Siamak Hariri, de Hariri Pontarini Architects en
Toronto, firma que diseñó la “Casa de la Adoración”
describe el edificio como un “templo de luz”. El diseño
del edificio recibió un codiciado premio en el mundo
de la arquitectura - una citación para el concurso
anual Progressive Architecture, promovido por una
importante publicación de Arquitectura.
Los galardones, creados en 1.954, se encuentran
entre los más prestigiosos reconocimientos para
proyectos que aún no han sido construidos. El
premio fue anunciado en la edición de la publicación
de Enero de 2.007.
Bahá’í Temple in Chile, South America
Light is the fundamental connecting force of the
universe. The Bahá’í Temple for South America,
designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects, employs both
translucent stone and the newest glass technology
as the means of generating and manifesting both
the physiological and spiritual delights of natural light
embodied in architecture. Set against the stirring
background of the Andean mountain range, the new
temple is to be a crystallizing of light-as-expression,
an evanescent structure of white alabaster and glass:
a place of pure luminescence. During the day, it is the
soft undulating alabaster and glass skin of the temple
which forms its outer expression. At night, the image
reverses itself, the entire volume then becoming a
warm totalized glow, with the inner form of the building
visible through the glass.

the firm that designed the House of Worship describes
the building as a “temple of light.”
The design for the building received a coveted
architectural award - a citation from Architect
magazine in its annual Progressive Architecture
competition. The awards, established in 1954, are
among the most prestigious honors for projects that
have not yet been built. The award was announced in
the January 2007 issue of the publication.

The design is made up of clean and simple lines
consisting of five buildings connected to each
other by bridges moving away from the coldness
of minimalism and instead creating an atmosphere
set to enhance the soul. Inside it is warm, capturing
the beauty of the Mediterranean light through its
huge windows, giving the buildings exceptional
viewpoints. The designer, Francisco Sanchez
Palaces, who specialized in lighting, put bright
lights inside to welcome and envelop the visitor.
Outside, the light becomes faint, embracing the
darkness of the night, and allowing you to enjoy the
nightfall.

Massimo Morozzi, a prominent figure in the world of
design, art directed Edra in its approach to design often
drawing inspiration from art and fashion. Their designs
are beautiful and luxurious but at the same time practical,
offering a number of ways to enjoy a piece of Edra’s
furniture. The media have always been interested in this
company as they set the trend within the home décor
industry exhibiting at the most prestigious tradeshows
in Italy as well as other countries and can be seen in
permanent exhibitions at New York’s MoMA, Paris’ Les
Arts Décoratifs and Beaubourg.
Máximo Morozzi, figura prominente del mundo
del diseño, ha dirigido artísticamente a Edra en su
acercamiento al diseño, obteniendo inspiración del
arte y la moda. Sus diseños son bellos y lujosos,
pero prácticos al mismo tiempo, ofreciendo diferentes
formas de disfrutar de las piezas de mobiliario de Edra.
Los medios de comunicación siempre han mostrado
un gran interés en esta compañía por considerarla
como referente en tendencia dentro de la industria de

It would be very inappropriate to talk about Edra without mentioning
the famous South American designers, Fernando and Humberto
Campana who have done a great deal of work with Edra in recent
years. They develop very ordinary ready-made materials or
waste products into creative and exciting pieces of furniture. The
brothers believe that the way they transform plain materials into
decadent objects reflects the spirit of contemporary Brazil which
is a zest for life. Humberto, born in Brotas, 250 kilometres from
São Paulo in 1953 and Humberto, in 1961. Humberto was a law
student and started to design furniture in the mid 1980s after his
younger brother Fernando had finished his architectural degree.
Fernando was interested in the research of alternative methods
of design.
No sería correcto hablar de Edra sin mencionar a los famosos
diseñadores sudamericanos Fernando y Humberto Campana,
quienes han realizado un gran trabajo para Edra en los últimos
años. Ellos desarrollan materiales con residuos y elementos
comunes para convertirlos en piezas de mobiliario creativas
y excitantes. Estos hermanos consideran que su forma de
transformar los materiales simples en objetos decadentes refleja
el espíritu contemporáneo de Brasil, de un vital entusiasmo.
Humberto nacido en 1.953 en Brotas, a 250 kilómetros de Sao
Paulo, era estudiante de derecho y comenzó a diseñar muebles

favelas found in Brazil. A favela is shanty
town with houses usually made of scraps of
wood. The Campana brothers used wood
found on the streets to create a fascinating

In 1983, Humberto called upon his brother to
help in with a project and since then, they have
never looked back paving a new and exciting
way to create a living space. Their first exhibition
took place in 1989 in the Nucleon Gallery in São
Paulo. Since then they received many awards
such as the Special Prize at the Museu da Casa
Brasileira and Designer of the Year at the Design
Miami. Ten years later after their first exhibition,
the Estúdio Campana was chosen to celebrate the
anniversary of Vitra Design Museum in Germany
demonstrating how far the brothers had come in
one decade.

hermano para ayudarle en un proyecto y, a partir
de entonces, iniciaron el camino hacia una forma
innovadora y apasionante de crear espacios vitales. Su

for VONDOM tells us about our roots as human
beings, proudly originating from the natural earth
and heading towards a future driven by digital
technology. Apart from their attractive and original
design, VLEK also interprets the concept of “habitat
sustainability”, incorporating an irrigation system
that waters plants up to 120 days, guaranteeing
total care of a plant during times of absence, thanks
to their water and food reserve system. The plant
learns to synchronize with the irrigation and to save
water at the same time.

Magazine visita la feria Hábitat 2010
en Valencia, una de las ferias más
importantes de Europa, que ofrece
todos los aspectos de la decoración,
mobiliario, iluminación, textiles y
accesorios para el hogar, así como
para exteriores.
In the autumn, Decostile Magazine
visited the Habitat 2010 exhibition
in Valencia - one of Europe’s most
significant fairs offering all aspects
of decoration from furniture, lighting,
textiles, outdoor to home accessories.
This inspirational fair offered something for everyone
with 900 exhibitors from 15 different countries in attendance over a five day period. Habitat showed how
it serves as a springboard for new talent showcasing
25 new and progressive companies in an area entitled “Nude”. This section of the show helps forge
relationships between new upcoming designers with
interior designers and manufacturers. The strapline
for the feria was, “365 days of ideas and passion”,
and this is exactly what it delivered.
Patricia Urquiola, one of the most influential designers in the world, directed a team comprising some
of Spain’s top designers and created an exhibit, simply called “Things”, to illustrate the impact on how
energy obtained from naturally renewable sources
can have on interior design.

This year Habitat focused on research, drive and
experimentation through the Kitchen R, D+i Workshops. The President of the International Kitchen
Design Show stated, “In the current economic situation, the most important thing to do is keep moving, commit to innovation and move forward. The
workshops are designed to help professionals experiment and think about new ways of understanding the elements that will make up the kitchens
of the future. This new formula should make our
International Kitchen Design Show, an even stronger proposition.”
Esta feria, que es una fuente de inspiración a
nivel mundial, ha contado con la presencia de 900
expositores de 15 países diferentes durante sus
5 días de exposición. Hábitat se consolida como
trampolín para nuevos talentos, presentando 25
nuevas empresas en el área titulada “Desnudo”. Esta
sección de la muestra impulsa las relaciones entre
nuevos diseñadores, diseñadores consagrados y
fabricantes. El lema de la feria ha sido “365 días de
ideas y pasión”, y esto es, en esencia, lo que se ha
podido disfrutar.
Patricia Urquiola, una de las diseñadoras más
influyentes del mundo, ha dirigido un equipo
compuesto por algunos de los mejores diseñadores
de España para crear una exposición titulada
simplemente “cosas”, con la que ilustra el impacto
que puede tener sobre el diseño de interiores la
cantidad de energía obtenida de manera natural
de las fuentes renovables. El muro de este stand,
situado en el centro de la exposición, se realizó con
cartón que contenía en su interior un rail móvil del
que colgaban numerosos artículos de mobiliario de
diferentes diseñadores.
Este año Hábitat se centró en la investigación, la
unidad y la experimentación a través de los talleres
de cocina I+D+I. El presidente del Organismo
Internacional de Cocina de diseño declaró: “En la
actual situación económica, lo más importante es
mantenerse en movimiento, nos comprometemos
a innovar y seguir adelante. Los talleres están
diseñados para ayudar a los profesionales a
experimentar y pensar en nuevas formas de entender
los elementos que componen las cocinas del futuro.
Esta nueva fórmula debe hacer de nuestro “Diseño
Internacional de Cocina Show” una propuesta aún
más fuerte”.

Exhibitors such as Ducampus, Andreu World,
Vondom, Latorre, Lola Glamour, Anperbar
Design, Mariner, Soher, Riperlamp, Gancedo,
LZF, FM, Ettica 21 and Epoca to name but
a few, all oozed quality, style, creativity and
innovation. Nani Marquina, for example,
created a galactic scene with a black undulating
carpet imitating a planet’s surface (called the
“Flying Carpet”) with a moon (simply called
“Luna”) made out of carpet hanging above.
Nearby Sancal placed a number of petalshaped seats that when put together, formed
a flower. LZF demonstrated how by simply
over-leafing fine wooden transparent squares
like Post-it® notes creates an interesting 3D
lampshade or wall when placed over light.
Expositores como Ducampus, Andreu World,
Vondom, Latorre, Lola Glamour, Anperbar Design,
Mariner, Soher, Riperlamp, Gancedo, LZF, FM,
Ettica 21 y Epoca, por nombrar algunos de ellos,
emanaron calidad, estilo, creatividad e innovación.
Nani Marquina, por ejemplo, creó una escena
galáctica con una alfombra negra y ondulada que
imitaba la superficie de un planeta (denominado “The
Flyiling Carpet”) con una luna (simplemente llamada
“Luna”) realizada como una alfombra colgada encima.
A su lado, Sancal situó asientos en forma de pétalos,
que cuando se colocan juntos, forman una flor. LZF
demostró como la superposición de delgados marcos
de madera transparentes, como notas Post-it®,
crean una interesante pantalla para lámpara o pared
cuando se posicionan sobre la luz.
This year at Habitat, designers were often
making references to nature – particularly in
the area of textiles and wallpaper. Cushions,
curtains, sofas and wallpaper were covered in
designs of birds, plants and flowers. Wallpaper
seemed to lean towards more of a jungle
theme with not just plants and flowers, but also
animal prints. Staying on the theme of nature,
designers of wallpaper have taken on new
and interesting materials to work with such as
bamboo, cork and materials to imitate the skin
of animals such as crocodile and cow which was
best displayed by Kemen Wallcoverings.

profusa referencia a la naturaleza – particularmente
en el área de textiles y papeles pintados. Cojines,
cortinas, sofás y papeles pintados se cubrieron con
diseños de pájaros, plantas y flores. Los papeles
pintados parecen inclinarse por los diseños selváticos,
no sólo con plantas y flores, sino incluyendo huellas
de animales. Siguiendo con el tema de la naturaleza,
los diseñadores de papeles pintados han empleado
nuevos e interesantes materiales con los que trabajar
como bambú, corcho y materiales que imitan pieles
de animales como cocodrilos y vacas, que tienen su
mejor exponente en Kemen Wallcovertings.

In the world of rugs, there was a trend in 3 dimensional designs with one
piece having varying textures and thicknesses. Carving attracted much attention with a rug that looked uncannily like a circular pile of pebbles and
their mat made up of various letters of the alphabet. Their rugs simply do
not just lie on the floor, they shout at you! Parentesi Quadra exhibited their
original patchwork rugs which were remakes from a selection of other rugs.
Their Loca Vida collection is particularly interesting comprising of a number
of different colours individually applied over a 6 month period.
Bright colours made an appearance this year with pink being a popular colour. Designers such as Tecninova, Gancedo, Equipo DRT, Almerich all
featured this colour in their displays whereas Cinema All’Aperto, Nuva and
Ego Paris leaned towards orange. Urban sultry colours were adopted by the
likes of Joquer, Skyline Design, Capdell and Kettal.
Some companies went for multi-functional designs. Ego Paris showed how
one of their ultra-modern sunbeds can very simply be transformed into five,
whilst Nacher exhibited their low table called Raf, which when lifted, turned
into a split-level table revealing a storage space on the lower tier.
Lighting played a very significant part in all areas of the exhibition. Serip,
who collaborated with Paulo Antunes and Eva Luz wowed visitors with their
incredible large-scale designs. Their breathtaking and original designs hung
from the ceiling and touched the floor like a pillar of beautiful
light. Other interesting lighting companies were Anperbar Design
whose exhibition was fun and innovative. Their designs were
simple but effective with malleable plastic stretched over wire
creating a soft light that took on unusual eye-catching shapes.

dimensiones, con piezas que muestran diferentes texturas y grosores.
Carving captó una gran atención con una alfombra que parecía
misteriosamente una pila circular de guijarros y otra alfombra compuesta
por varias letras del alfabeto. Sus alfombras no se postran simplemente
en el suelo sino que ¡parecen gritarte! Parentesi Quadra exhibió sus
originales alfombras patchwork, que destacan entre la selección de
alfombras. Su colección “Loca Vida” es particularmente interesante y
comprende una gran diversidad de colores a aplicar individualmente en
un periodo de 6 meses.
Los colores brillantes hacen su aparición este año con el rosa como
color más popular. Diseñadores como Tecninova, Gancedo, Equipo
DRT o Almerich han presentado este color en sus muestras mientras
que Cinema All’aperto, Nuva y Ego París se decantaron por el naranja.
Sin embargo, los colores urbanos fueron los seleccionados por Joquer,
Skyline Design, Capdell y Kettal.
Algunas compañías apostaron por el diseño multifuncional. Ego
París demostró como una de sus ultramodernas tumbonas puede
transformarse sencillamente en cinco, mientras Nacer exhibió su mesa
baja denominada Raf, que cuando se eleva se convierte en una mesa
de dos niveles cuya parte inferior revela un espacio de almacenaje.
La iluminación jugó un importante papel en todas las áreas de la
muestra. Serip, que colaboró con Paulo Antunes y Eva Luz asombró a
los visitantes con su increíbles diseños a gran escala. Sus refrescantes
y originales diseños colgaban desde el techo para tocar el suelo como
un pilar de hermosa luz. Otra compañía de iluminación que despertó
gran interés fue Anperbar Design, cuya exposición fue divertida e
innovadora. Sus diseños son simples pero efectivos, realizados en
plástico maleable estirado sobre alambre crean una iluminación suave
que adopta llamativas y extrañas formas.

In the high decoration area, big brands
such as Cordon, Soher, Valentí, Latorre,
Iris Cristal Bohemia, Picó Muebles,
Loyra Mobiliario, Salvilamp, Schuller,
Colección Alexandra were all very
dominant at the fair - their stands were
big, bold and unashamedly luxurious. Lola
Glamour by Classico Almazán who were
also in the high decoration area came
up with a very original autumnal theme
covering their floor with dried leaves.
It is fair to say that the Feria Hábitat Valencia
has once again established itself as the
main point of reference for the Made in
Spain Home and a very significant event for
designers, manufacturers and influencers
making it a benchmark for trends.
En el área de la alta decoración, destacaron
en la muestra las grandes marcas como
Cordon, Soher, Valentí, Latorre, Iris Cristal
Bohemia, Picó Muebles, Loyra Mobiliario,
Salvilamp, Schuller y Colección Alexandra,
todos ellos con grandes stands, atrevidos y
desvergonzadamente lujosos. Laura Glamour
de Classico Almazán, que también se encontraba
en esta área, se presentó con un original tema
otoñal que cubría el suelo con hojas secas.
Es justo decir que la Feria Hábitat de Valencia se
ha convertido una vez más en principal punto de
referencia del hogar “made in Spain” y se afianza
como un evento significativo para diseñadores,
fabricantes y mercados de influencia, como
muestra de nuevas tendencias.

PATRICIA URQUIOLA
Urquiola was born in Oviedo in the north of Spain and studied at the Faculty of
Architecture in the Technical University of Madrid. She then moved to Milan and
became an assistant lecturer on courses held by Achille Castiglioni at the Milan
Polytechnic and Eugenio Bettinelli at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Création
Industrielle in Paris. It was around this time that she also went into partnership with
the Italian design company, Maddalena de Padova. She, together with the highly
regarded Vico Magistretti, designed the Flower chair, the Loom Sofa, Chaise and
Chaise Longue. From 1993 to 1996 she worked in architectural design, restaurants,
exhibitions and the like with architects Ramerino and de Renzio. In 1996 she became
the head of the Lissoni Associati design group working for well known brands such as
Cappellini, Kartell, Alessi, Boffi amongst many whilst designing for a number of different companies
such as B&B Italia, Kartell, Tronconi, MDF Italia, Bosa and Moroso.

In 2001, Urquiola’s products were selected for the Italian Design 2001 exhibition and for the International
Design Yearbook 1999 and 2001. She was also chair of the jury for the CDIM Design Award in 2001.
She continues to live and work in Milan though making a name for herself all over the world with her
numerous partnerships and insightful design ideas.
Entre 1.993 y 1.995, trabaja en diseño arquitectónico,
restaurantes, exposiciones y proyectos similares con los
arquitectos Camerino y De Renzio. En 1.996 se convierte
en líder del grupo de diseño Lissoni Associati, trabajando
para marcas tan conocidas como Cappellini, Kartell,
Alessi o Bofia entre otros, mientras diseña para numerosas
compañías como B&B Italia, Kartell, Tronconi, MDF Italia,
Bosa y Moroso.
En 2.001, los productos de Urquiola fueron seleccionados

The new trend in home textiles offers a warm and cosy feel, reminiscent
of the 30s and 40s. Keeping in line with current trends in furniture and
lighting, home textiles have added touches of decorative styles that
highlight certain elements, giving a distinctive touch.

reminiscencias de los años 30 y 40. En concordancia con las tendencias

On this occasion, they have travelled back in time to recreate floral prints either in clusters or framed in delicate medallions and stylised-colonial style
sheets.
Striped prints are still present in the samples, although the designers have
abandoned last season’s minimalist compositions and now feature different
widths to soften the prints’ linear nature.

Another important point to note about this revival is that it doesn’t just focus
solely on design.
Textures also play an important role in achieving the final result - so
manufacturers have opted to play with different materials to create reliefs.
Velvet, the king of relief materials, returns to its old strength and brings luxury
and warmth to carpets underfoot. Grandma’s embroidery covers windows
and decorates cushions with delicate patterns, and the overall effect is a
discreet rustic touch.
The colour palette of brilliant shades creates a smooth and relaxing
environment. Yellows, oranges and blues are blended to match pastel
pink corals and garnets. The gold and silver highlights, not only in the new
brocades, but also acts as bridges that link different colours or dividers that
enhance the full range.

Cabe destacar que la base de este cambio de tendencia no se sustenta
únicamente en los motivos plasmados en los tejidos. Sin lugar a duda, las
texturas juegan un importante papel en la consecución del resultado final
por lo que los fabricantes han optado por jugar con diferentes materiales
para crear relieves. El terciopelo, rey de los materiales del relieve, retoma
con fuerza su antiguo liderazgo devolviendo a los tejidos la riqueza y calidez
al tacto. Los bordados de la abuela se asoman a las ventanas y reposan en
los cojines con delicados trazos, y el efecto cuero se presenta discretamente
aportando un toque rústico.
La paleta de colores se aparta de los brillantes tonos, consiguiendo suavizar
y relajar los ambientes. Los amarillos, naranjas y azules se matizan para
combinar con los rosas pastel, coral y granates. El oro y la plata destacan,
no sólo en los nuevos brocados, si no como puentes que enlazan diferentes
colores o divisores que realzan la sucesión de una gama completa.

Museums and exhibitions around the world show
us that the approach to art through the history of
mankind has been didactic. This form of approaching
art, however, is very limited, and can sometimes fail
to meet the challenge of involving the visitor in the
essence of the work. But what if the art was to serve
the individual, becoming his or habitat, and the setting
in which they develop their own experiences?
The answer to this question is found in the heart of

Museos y exposiciones en todo el mundo nos muestran el arte a través de la
historia del ser humano de forma didáctica, acercándonos a la forma de sentir
y ver el mundo de cada artista y convirtiendo sus obras en patrimonio cultural
de la humanidad. Sin embargo, esta forma de vivir el arte es muy limitada,
un escaparate que no alcanza a cumplir el reto de involucrar al visitante en
la esencia de la obra. Pero ¿qué ocurriría si el arte estuviera al servicio
del individuo, convirtiéndose en su hábitat, en el escenario sobre el que se
desarrollan sus propias vivencias?
La respuesta a esta cuestión la encontramos en el corazón de la ciudad de
Barcelona. En este privilegiado enclave se encuentra el Hotel Boutique Neri.
Edificado en el centro Gótico de Barcelona, comparte vecindad con el palacio

La base de este magistral escenario la conforman dos
elementos que nos transportan a un mágico pasado:
un enigmático palacio medieval unido a un edificio
construido en piedra que tuvo que ser restaurado en
1958 debido a los daños sufridos durante la guerra
civil. El proyecto de conversión de este hermoso
hotel supuso un gran reto para los arquitectos
Francisco y Damián Rivas, que se sirven de los
fuertes muros de mampostería y los arcos de medio
punto, característicos del medievo, para crear una
atmósfera de recogimiento que invade al visitante
y le convierte en actor principal de la historia de su
estancia en el Hotel Neri.
Two separate elements make up this “stage” and
give us a glimpse into a magical past: an enigmatic
medieval palace attached to a stone building that
had to be restored in 1958 due to damage suffered
during the Civil War. The renovation of this beautiful
hotel was a great challenge for architects Damian
and Francisco Rivas, who used the strong masonry
walls and arches, typical of the Middle Ages, to
create a powerful atmosphere of awe that makes
the visitor the central character during their stay at
the Hotel Neri.
Inside the interior design is just as impressive.
Cristina Gabas and her team of craftsmen set
out with the aim of combining creativity in art and
history as well as blending functionality with a
touch of inspiration that stays harmonious with the
modern world. With a unique and personal touch
that applies innovative techniques to raw materials
such as stone and wood, the interior designers have
created a setting that acts as canvas to a creative
and sensual explosion.
En este punto, la decoración toma las riendas de
la narrativa. La decoradora de interiores Cristina
Gabas dirige un equipo de artesanos con el fin de
convertir creatividad en arte, fusionando historia y
funcionalidad con un toque de inspiración selvática
que se plasma en estancias armoniosas, con un
ambiente único y personal, en el que técnicas
innovadoras se aplican a materias primas como la
piedra y la madera, sirviendo como lienzo a una
explosión creativa que invade los sentidos.
The library on the ground floor is an example of
how traditional large windows and high ceilings
- topped with wooden beams - blend seamlessly
with ultramodern furniture and comfortable velvet
sofas, illuminated by a beautiful glass a chandelier
that invites the guest invited to unwind and enjoy
reading.
La biblioteca de la planta baja es una muestra de
cómo los grandes ventanales y los tradicionales
techos de gran altura - rematados con vigas de
madera - combinan a la perfección con mobiliario
ultramoderno y confortables sofás de terciopelo, que
a la luz de una hermosa araña de cristal invitan al
sosiego y el disfrute de la lectura.

El arte con nombre propio nos recibe tras ascender por
la majestuosa escalinata del palacio hasta la primera
planta. Los hermanos Campana, diseñadores brasileños
de talento mundialmente reconocido, nos proponen
disfrutar de uno de sus lienzos murales, inspirado
en la selva brasileña, cómodamente instalados en el
trenzado de su “BOA”. Este espectacular diseño, en el
que 90 metros de suave terciopelo anudado conforman
una original área de descanso, es sin duda una muestra
de cómo el arte interactúa con el ser humano en la vida
cotidiana, convirtiendo un momento de relajación en
una experiencia artística.
Cada una de las habitaciones y suites del Hotel Neri
muestra una marcada personalidad, si bien todas ellas
tienen como piedra angular la calidez.
Sobre sus acogedores suelos de madera reposa un
mobiliario sobrio, con colores cálidos y diseños que
reinventan estilos del pasado, siguiendo las tendencias
actuales de decoración que rescatan las delicadas
líneas de muebles clásicos, utilizando maderas nobles
y técnicas artesanales para obtener muebles que son
en sí mismos auténticas obras de arte.

Salón BOA
Climbing the majestic steps of the palace to the
first floor, the guest has the opportunity to see the
world-renowned Brazilian designers the Campana
Brothers showcase their talent, with both paintings
and pieces inspired by the Brazilian jungle, and the
installation of their eye-catching piece “BOA”. This
spectacular design, which comprises of 90 metres
of soft velvet knotted up to form an original seating
area is certainly an example of how art interacts with
humans in everyday life, turning a relaxing moment
into an artistic experience.
Each of the rooms and suites at the Hotel Neri has it
own individual personality, but all have warmth and
intimate touches as their cornerstone.
All the rooms feature cozy wood floors with modern
furniture, warm colours and designs that reinvents the
styles of the past. The pieces follow the current trends of
decoration that are inspired by the delicate lines of classic

furniture, using fine woods and traditional for furniture
techniques that are works of art in themselves.
The rooms also feature false headboards that which
are actually murals in gold or silver and recall the
old medieval altarpieces - or paintings that reflect
combinations of colours, and undefined shapes
evoking landscapes that encourage guests to let
their imaginations roam.
Destacan por su originalidad los “falsos cabeceros”, que
son en realidad inquietantes murales realizados en pan
de oro o plata - que traen al recuerdo los antiguos retablos
medievales - o lienzos que plasman combinaciones de
colores, con formas no definidas, evocando paisajes
que incitan al huésped a dejar volar su imaginación.
Los cuartos de baño imitan entornos naturales
basándose en composiciones realizadas con cuarcita.
La estudiada composición de estas estancias recuerda
la amplitud de las cuevas que proliferan junto a los ríos
en las zonas selváticas, en equilibrio con un elegante
minimalismo. Tampoco en estos espacios se ha pasado
por alto la convergencia entre descanso y salud como
complemento al hospedaje ya que la cuarcita posee
cualidades beneficiosas para la salud, que ayudan
a liberar la energía negativa, mientras lámparas de
infrarrojos refuerzan estos beneficios saludables gracias
a sus propiedades relajantes y anti-inflamatorias.
Bathrooms mimic the natural environments based
on composites made with quartzite. The studied
composition of these rooms recalls the caves that
grow along the rivers in the region’s forested areas,
balanced with elegant minimalism. Once again these
spaces encourage relaxation and health in addition to
containing quartzite and its beneficial health qualities,
which help to release negative energy, while infrared
lamps reinforce these health benefits thanks to its
relaxants and anti-inflammatory properties.

Lighting plays a special role in the Hotel
Neri. The high ceilings amplify the effect
of the large windows, providing natural
light to all of the rooms, and showing
every one of the many architectural details of the building in all their glory. And
when night falls, careful lighting transforms the hotel into a dream landscape
in which light and shadows play out a
magical show. The final design touches
are provided by the unique decorative frames around
Venezuelan artists floral and landscape paintings on
the first and second floor. The great arches and walls
are built of large blocks of stone - arranged in stalls which were part of medieval palace. The Hotel Neri
restaurant is a large space in which allows guests to
enjoy the best cuisine in an environment that brings
together bothhistory and modernity. Nature is most
present in the solarium of the Hotel. Located in the attic of the building, its design is based on the concepts
of Feng Shui, a composition which represent the five
elements (earth, water, fire, metal and wood). The Hotel Neri is a journey into the past with a vision. An experience that offers art and functionality in the service
of the senses, and an innovative hotel that departs
from the conventional concept of accommodation.
La iluminación juega un especial papel en esta puesta
en escena. Los elevados techos amplifican el efecto

de los grandes ventanales, dotando de luz natural a
las estancias, mostrándose así en todo su esplendor
cada uno de los innumerables detalles arquitectónicos
del edificio. Y cuando llega la noche, una cuidada
selección de luminarias multiplica los efectos ópticos
convirtiendo el ambiente en un onírico paisaje, en el
que luces y sombras parecen interpretar ante nuestros
ojos un espectáculo mágico.
Completan este incomparable marco decorativo
los murales de artistas venezolanos con temática
floral y paisajista en la primera y segunda planta.
Los grandiosos arcos de medio punto, y los
muros construidos en grandes bloques de piedra
- dispuestos en sillería - que formaban parte del
antiguo palacio medieval, conforman el restaurante
del Hotel Neri, un amplio espacio en el que
disfrutar de la mejor gastronomía en un entorno
que aúna historia y modernidad. La naturaleza
tiene su máxima representación en el solarium del
Hotel. Situado en el ático del edificio, su diseño
está basado en los conceptos del Feng Shui, una
composición en la que se representan los cinco
elementos (tierra, agua, fuego, metal y madera). El
Hotel Neri representa un viaje al pasado con una
visión de futuro. Una experiencia que oferta arte y
funcionalidad al servicio de los sentidos, con una
propuesta innovadora que se aleja del concepto
convencional de alojamiento.
