The Ignatian Corner!
A Personal Viewpoint on Ethics in
Technology - 2
(by Elmer Aznar)
How do we apply this ethics to technology? What
is really good for man? This depends on how we
engage people on these 3 moral dimensions:



What is right:
Do we evaluate actions only as defined by
law or social conventions (Social
Ethics)?
What ought to be:
Are our actions based only on a personal
obligation, duty, moral character,
virtue, and responsibility as dictated by
our conscience (Individual Ethics)?
What is good:
Are our thoughts and actions geared
toward the ultimate goal, the ideal, the
desired fulfillment, the perfection, the
end? Are we focused on searching and
fulfilling the meaning of our life? Do we
know where we are going? Do we even
care?
Discerning WHY, knowing our purpose will
strengthen our beliefs, propel our thoughts,
motivate and drive our actions.
And what is that goal? HAPPINESS! We all want
to be happy!
But have we truly discerned what really makes us
happy… that ultimate end, that perfection, that
state where we are at peace, restful, and content?
Happiness is internal, and not external to us.
 Money will not buy us happiness. It is an
instrument, a means to an end.
 Honor, fame, and power rely on the approval
of others. Disapproval will leave us hanging
and discontented.
 A healthy body does not last.


The attainment of pleasure is fleeting and
temporary.
Immortality makes sense only if we have
someone to share it with.
We have an unlimited natural desire for perfect
happiness. This innate desire must correspond to
something that actually exists. An unlimited good
must exist which can satisfy all our desires. That
human good is nothing less than God!
So what makes us happy? LOVE! God’s love! To
love and be loved is human and divine. It is our
gift. And who else can embody this perfect love
but God!



St. Augustine, in his Confession proclaimed,
“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and
(therefore) our hearts are restless until they
rest in You!”
St. Thomas Aquinas, when asked what he
desires exclaimed, “Only You, Lord! Only You!”
And St. Ignatius of Loyola in his Suspice
humbly professed, “Lord, take and receive all
my liberty, my memory, my understanding,
my entire will, and all I have. I return all to
You. Give me only Your love and grace. That
is enough for me.”
God’s Love is all we desire, and we should let God
find us. As we are searching for God, God is
longing for us to love Him. God’s continuing love
is enfleshed in Christ!
Aimed ultimately at God’s greater glory, we can
refocus technology to serve the human person,
the child of God upon whom our happiness lies.
God’s goodness and truth is reflected in the eyes
of the people we love and serve… and technology
can be a means to make that happen.
I sought my soul, but my soul I could not see.
I sought my God, but my God eluded me.
I sought my brother and I found all three.
William Blake

Lenten Directed
Retreat
February 14-20, 2016
Our Lenten Weeks of Directed Prayer have been a great success. They enable the
participants to get into the Liturgical Season and to deepen their relationship with
God. A team of Ignatian Spiritual Directors will provide individual prayer direction for
interested parishioners in a “retreat” which you can do at home.
The retreat will begin with a group meeting on Sunday, February 14th from
1:15pm - 2:15pm. During the week (Monday - Friday), each person making the retreat
will meet with an Ignatian Spiritual Director for 30 minutes daily. Your director will
discuss prayer with you and suggest Scripture for you to pray each day of the retreat.
On Saturday, February 20th, all participants will gather after the 9:00am Mass for the
conclusion of the retreat.
The only requirement is your commitment to pray for approximately 30 minutes
each day during this time and to meet with your spiritual director daily.
For more information and/or to register, please call the parish office at 704-6643992 by Wednesday, February 10th.

New Year’s Resolutions Revisited
Still looking for a new resolution? Another online
prayer resource is Sacred Space, http://
sacredspace.ie/ It is a work of the Irish Province
of the Society of Jesus. It originated in the offices
of the Jesuit Communication Centre in Ireland in
1999. Being a ministry of the Irish Jesuits, it is
inspired by the spirituality of Saint Ignatius of
Loyola (Ignatian spirituality). It allows you to
make a 'Sacred Space' in your day, and spend ten
minutes, praying as you sit at your computer, with
the help of on-screen guidance and scripture
chosen specially every day. The Jesuits at Loyola
Press offer 3-Minute Retreats at http://
www.loyolapress.com/3-minute-retreats-dailyonline-prayer.htm. Oh, and “they have an app for
that.” Search the App Store for Sacred Space and 3
