The feast of Epiphany is the official, universal solemnity for the Catholic Church because the Son of God was “manifestes” or “epiphanized” to the entire world. Today we celebrate that Christ is truly Catholic because Christ came for everyone. In the first reading, the Prophet Isaiah invites us to arise because our light has come. Christ’s manifestation is supposed to shatter the darkness in our life and bring us face to face with our destiny which is found in Jesus alone. He is our peace and our reconciliation. In the Gospel reading Jesus was manifested in the very cradle of his infancy to those who were near and to those who were afar—to the Jews whose shepherds were nearby; to Gentiles whose Magi were at a great distance. The former came to Him on the very day of His birth; the latter are believed to have come on this day. Jesus was not revealed to shepherds because they were learned, nor to the Magi because they were righteous. He, the cornerstone, joined both groups to Himself since He came to choose the foolish things of the world in order to put to shame the wise and to call sinners, not the just, so that the mighty would not be lifted up nor the lowly be in despair. Like the Magi, daily we visit the Lord in the Mass. We open our treasures and offer Him Gold, Incense and Myrrh. In the Holy Communion, we receive Him and He receives us. If we are wise, we also will return by another way and abandon the reckless, earthbound way which we have been following. We have seen the Lord; we should now live for Him and for Him alone, in spite of all difficulties. May God bless you! Happy Epiphany! Yours in Christ, Fr. EVENING BIBLE STUDY Join us on Thursday, January 7, 2016 to continue the 10 session series every Thursday until its completion on February 11th. The class is from 7—9pm in room 8 of the school. All are welcome! For more information or to register for the study, please contact Dr. Neil Fanning, DDS, facilitator, at: [email protected] Why are some RCIA participants dismissed in the middle of the Mass? This Sunday, at one of the morning Masses, those adults and children preparing to be baptized into the Catholic Church, and those preparing for full communion will be dismissed at the end of the Liturgy of the Word. This will continue each Sunday until Easter when, at the Easter Vigil, those who are ready will join us at the Table of the Eucharist for the first time. The parish is not sending them out because they are somehow “unworthy” to stay for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Though they cannot yet come to the table of the Eucharist, Mother Church still has an obligation to feed those who have entered into a relationship with her through the Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming which was celebrated recently. God’s Word is their only food during this period. Instead, the participants depart from the Mass with one or more RCIA team members, to discuss the Mass readings for that Sunday and to experience more fully the impact of the Scriptures in their lives. This time is known as “Reflection on the Word.” “A ll Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the one who belongs to God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17) RESPECT LIFE Show your opposition to the evil of abortion by attending OneLifeLA an annual Archdiocesan pro-life event in downtown Los Angeles celebrating human life -from conception to natural death. It would be pleasing to see a great response from our Catholic Church parishioners. HOMELESS SHELTER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Our Mother Teresa Christian Service helps the homeless of Simi Valley in a special way during the winter months from November through March. It represents our Catholic community in an ecumenical effort called P.A.D.S. (Public Action to Deliver Shelter). This program provides shelter every night of the week, in a different church or hall, during the five harshest months of winter. St. Rose supplies night monitors every other Saturday night. The night monitors act as hosts for our guests, providing a movie, snacks and coffee, etc., during the evening and then breakfast in the morning before the guests leave. The volunteers stay overnight from 7:30 pm until 7:30 am the next morning. Adult volunteers are greatly needed for this. If you can help or have any questions, please call Dave Burciaga, the St. Rose coordinator, at (805) 795-6974. Thank you. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
