Gospel Acclamation
Nicene Creed
Penitential Rite (Confiteor)
I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I
have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have
done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my
fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary
ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and
sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and
earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus
Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all
ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all
things were made; For us men and for our salvation he came down
from heaven,
(all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death
and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with
the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right
hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living
and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the
Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father
and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and
glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one,
holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the
forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

IV Domingo
de Adviento
Entrada: Oh Ven, Oh Ven, Emmanuel
Credo Niceno
la Virgen, y se hizo hombre;
Y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en tiempos de Poncio Pilato;

APÓSTOL DE CALIFORNIA XII [Apostle of California]
In late 1772 and through 1773, Serra went to Mexico City to place the whole issue of the Missions before the Royal Governor,
Viceroy Bucareli. While there he presented the first sketch of a system of laws to govern the Mission Territory and received many
gifts from the Governor, including practical things such as food stuffs and others such as vestments and altar supplies. On his way
home he sat for the characteristic portrait we see of him [copied in the banner in Church] although the original portrait is gone.
Bucareli, the Viceroy, removed Fages, the Military governor, at Serra’s request, and thus with new powers to protect the Indians,
his return was a triumphal march up California. During this time, the first land expedition over the Colorado River from Sonora
Mexico arrived at Mission San Gabriel, opening the way from the East under Fr. Garces, well known in New Mexico, and the
military escort, de Anza. This route opened the way to settlers from the East. However the down side would be that the newcomers
would take the arable land from the Indians for themselves. The “Californios” as they were known, settled the land in vast land
grants, remnants lasting in some cases to today. In 1775, having arrived from Spain via Baja, Fray Fermín Lasuén and six soldiers
founded the Mission San Juan Capistrano, and from the beginning the annually returning swallows were already blessing the
mission. Nevertheless the founding was aborted by an Indian uprising throughout the Southland. Serra’s written response to the
Viceroy said “in case the Indians, whether pagans or Christians, would kill me, they should be pardoned.” After three years’
drought, the Indians were convinced that the Spaniards were causing “seeds not to grow” which added fuel to the fire. Like today,
we still look for explanations for drought. Then in 1776 Serra himself pulled the three bronze bells from their burial place at
Capistrano, dusted them off and with their music, re-founded the Mission. IHM Pray for us Fr. Jerry
Jerry
