plenamente en la capacidad del sector crucerístico de
seguir superando con éxito la crisis económica. En esta
entrevista, el máximo representante de CLIA en Europa
analiza la situación de la industria y apunta a la
innovación como uno de los caminos que la llevarán hacia
este éxito.

En los últimos años, la aportación de la industria crucerística a la economía
europea no ha parado de crecer, alcanzando los 36.700 millones de euros en
2011. ¿Puede avanzar cómo se ha comportado el sector en 2012 y las
previsiones que maneja CLIA Europa para 2013?
Todavía no disponemos de cifras que nos permitan analizar el comportamiento
del sector en 2012. No obstante, la industria continúa avanzando año tras año y
las previsiones son optimistas. Confiamos en que la demanda continuará
creciendo a medida que la industria continúe aumentando su oferta para seguir
creando nuevas opciones vacacionales adaptadas a todos los públicos.

El Mediterráneo se ha situado como el segundo destino crucerístico más
importante del mundo. ¿Sigue teniendo potencial de crecimiento o se ve
amenazado por destinos emergentes?
Nosotros estamos convencidos de que todavía queda potencial de crecimiento
en Europa. Si analizamos el desarrollo del mercado de cruceros y sus
posibilidades, todavía nos queda mucho camino por delante. La penetración que
tiene actualmente el turismo de cruceros en mercados avanzados es del 3,6%
mientras que en Europa estamos en el 1,5%.
Los nuevos destinos emergentes están contribuyendo a complementar la oferta
existente, ya que el mercado sigue creciendo en volumen año tras año. Por ello,
creemos que Europa seguirá siendo un destino de máxima relevancia en el
sector.

the man in charge of the CLIA in Europe analyses the state
of the industry and points to innovation as one of the
routes to success.

Over recent years, the contribution of the cruise industry to Europe's economy
has kept growing, reaching 36,700 million Euros in 2011. How will the sector fare
compared to 2012 and what is the CLIA's forecast for 2013?
We still don't have the figures to analyse the sector's performance in 2012.
Nevertheless the industry keeps growing year on year and the forecasts are
optimistic. We believe demand will continue to rise as the industry keeps on
improving what it has to offer and creates new holiday options adapted to every
type of public.
The Mediterranean has positioned itself as the second most important cruise
destination in the world. Does it still have growth potential or is it under threat
from emerging destinations?
We are convinced there is still growth potential in Europe. If we analyse the
development of the cruise market and it's possibilities, there is still a long road
ahead. The current penetration of cruise tourism in advanced markets is 3.6%
while in Europe it is only 1.5%.
The newly emerging destinations are complementing the existing offerings, while
the market keeps growing in volume year on year. For this reason, we think
Europe will remain a destination of maximum relevance in the sector.

Hasta ahora, la industria de cruceros se mostraba casi inmune a la crisis
económica. Sin embargo, las principales navieras ya han advertido de que hay
que volver a dar valor a los viajes de crucero, lo que pasaría por un incremento
de precios. ¿Es eso necesario para que los clientes valoren más este tipo de
ocio?
La industria de cruceros tiene un producto sólido que está logrando resistir
frente a las crisis. La industria está muy centrada en mantener un crecimiento
racional, como viene haciendo históricamente guiado por la demanda. En este
sentido, seguiremos ajustando la oferta a la demanda real.
Es importante destacar que el turismo de crucero es más asequible que
cualquier otra opción turística, teniendo en cuenta que cubre el transporte, el
alojamiento, las comidas y el ocio en el precio final.
¿Qué debe hacer la industria crucerística global para seguir creciendo?
La industria está continuamente ampliando su oferta de productos y servicios y,
al mismo tiempo, desarrollando nuevos mercados y barcos para cubrir las

El pasado mes de diciembre, nueve asociaciones de cruceros, entre ellas el
European Cruise Council (ECC), que ha pasado a denominarse CLIA Europa,
anunciaron su integración en una única entidad. ¿Qué ventajas aporta esta
unión y cuáles son las líneas estratégicas de trabajo que se van a seguir?
La nueva asociación nos va a permitir que todas las compañías de cruceros,
agencias de viajes y asociados actúen como una única industria y con una
única voz.
El objetivo es que todas las navieras tengan un único punto de referencia a
nivel global en cuanto a los recursos técnicos y normativos, así como una
comunicación coordinada.
Mientras, para las agencias de viajes la nueva asociación ofrecerá
programas de colaboración más sólidos y la posibilidad de formar parte de
una red mayor.
Finalmente, la principal ventaja para los socios ejecutivos reside en la
obtención de mayores oportunidades para sus clientes y sus socios
comerciales.
Last December, nine cruise associations, the European Cruise Council (ECC)
among them, now known as CLIA Europa, announced their integration into a
unique organisation. Which advantages does this union provide and what type
of strategy is it going to adopt?
The new association will allow all cruise companies, travel agencies and
associated businesses to act together and to speak with one voice.
The aim is for all shipping companies to have a single point of reference on a
global scale with regard to technical resources and standards, as well as
coordinated communication.
As far as the travel agencies are concerned, the new association will provide
improved collaboration programmes and the possibility of being part of a
larger network. Finally, the main advantage for the executive partners
resides in gaining greater opportunities for their clients and commercial
partners.

It is important to point out that cruise tourism is more affordable than any other
alternative, taking into account that it includes transport, accommodation, meals
and entertainment in the final price.
Until now, the cruise industry has been almost immune to the economic crisis.
However, the main shipping companies have already warned of the need to value
cruises, which could lead to an increase in prices. Is that essential to make
customers value this type of leisure activity?
The cruise industry has a solid product and is managing to stave off the crisis. The
industry is focused on maintaining rational growth, as it has done historically,

What must the international cruise industry do to keep on growing?
The industry is continually increasing its supply of products and services while at
the same time developing new markets and ships to cover the needs of its
customers. The aim is to keep making progress in this direction, presenting new
on board services, increasingly exotic destinations, more innovative ships, and
activities both on board and ashore. These are some examples that allow us to
offer unique products to our customers.

Stavros Hatzakos, presidente de MedCruise, analiza en
esta entrevista la situación de los puertos mediterráneos
respecto a la industria de cruceros y habla de los
principales retos a los que se enfrentan para mantener a
la región como uno de los grandes destinos de cruceros
del mundo.
Stavros Hatzakos, president of MedCruise, discusses in
this interview the situation of the Mediterranean ports
regarding the cruise industry and speak about the main
challenges they face to keep the region as one of the most
important world cruise destinations.

El año pasado, MedCruise cumplió 15 años de actividad. ¿Cuáles son los
principales objetivos de la asociación para los próximos 15 años?
Nuestro principal objetivo es el de promover nuestra área y la actividad de
crucero y seguir mejorando la calidad de servicios ofrecidos a las líneas de
cruceros.
Nuestras principales metas para los próximos años son seguir creciendo,
fortalecer la colaboración con las líneas de cruceros, aumentar nuestra
presencia en el ámbito europeo, avanzar en temas ambientales hacia una
industria sostenible y la creación de unos estándares MedCruise que garanticen
un nivel de servicios en cualquier puerto perteneciente a la Asociación.

¿Cómo trabaja MedCruise para fortalecer la relación que tiene con las
compañías de cruceros?
Estamos en constante comunicación con las líneas de cruceros de varias
maneras. Nuestras asambleas generales incluyen conferencias, talleres,
mesas redondas y reuniones de negocios que permiten a nuestros miembros a
ponerse en contacto con los representantes de líneas de cruceros.
Ser miembro de MedCruise ayuda a los puertos a conseguir una estrecha
relación con las líneas de cruceros de forma regular. Tenemos nuestras
Asambleas Generales dos veces al año.
Además, organizamos cursos de desarrollo profesional y talleres que reúnen a
representantes de los puertos y las líneas de cruceros para trabajar sobre
diferentes temas de interés común, buscando siempre el beneficio de la
industria en su conjunto.
En 15 años, MedCruise ha crecido y ahora la asociación está formada por 71
puertos y 28 miembros asociados, representando más de 100 puertos en 20
países. ¿Hasta dónde quieren seguir creciendo?
Bueno, por supuesto que nos gustaría que todos los puertos de cruceros del
Mediterráneo se unieran a MedCruise, y estamos trabajando en ello.
Last year MedCruise celebrated 15 years of its establishment. What are the
association’s main objectives for the next 15 years?
Our main objective is to promote our area, to promote cruising and to give better
quality of services to the cruise lines.
Our main objectives for the next years are to continue growing, to strengthen the
collaboration with cruise lines, to increase our presence at the European level, to
move forward in the environmental issues towards a sustainable industry and to
create MedCruise standards that guarantee a level of services in any port
belonging to the Association.
How is working MedCruise to have a more close relationship with cruise lines?
We are in constant communication with the cruise lines in several ways. Our
General Assemblies include conferences, workshops, roundtables and business
meetings that allow our members to get in contact with the cruise line
representatives.
Being a member of MedCruise helps the ports to get a close relationship with the
cruise lines in regular basis. We have our General Assemblies twice a year.
In addition we organize professional development courses and workshops that
bring together ports and cruise lines representatives to work on different issues
of common interest, always looking for the benefit of the industry as a whole.
During this 15 years, MedCruise has grown and now the association has 71 port
members and 28 associate members, representing more than 100 ports in 20
countries. How far the association wants to keep growing?
Well, of course we would like all the cruise ports of the Mediterranean to join us,
and we are working on that.
The Mediterranean is clearly the second most important world cruise destination.
Do you think the Mediterranean still has growth potential or it is dangerously
threatened by new emerging destinations?
There is a reason why the Mediterranean has grown to get to this position of
second most important world cruise destination: the Mediterranean is the birth

crecer o está amenazado por nuevos destinos emergentes?
Hay una razón por la cual el Mediterráneo ha crecido hasta llegar a esta
posición de segundo destino más importante del mundo de cruceros: el
Mediterráneo es la cuna de varias civilizaciones antiguas diferentes, lo que
convierte a nuestra región el único lugar en el mundo donde los viajeros pueden
visitar tantas diferentes culturas en un solo crucero, viajando entre tres
continentes: África, Asia y Europa.
Aquí se pueden visitar desde las antiguas pirámides de Egipto, pasando por los
palacios renacentistas de Italia, los magníficos castillos de Francia, o los
carismáticos edificios de Gaudí en España; desde pueblecitos tradicionales en
pequeñas islas, pasando por fortificaciones medievales y hasta ciudades de
rascacielos modernos; desde paisajes de desiertos con oasis, hasta verdes
parques nacionales con lagos y ríos, y por supuesto las famosas playas
mediterráneas y en sus costas maravillosas.
¿En qué otro lugar del mundo puede alguien irse a dormir después de ver el
Partenón y al despertar dar un paseo en góndola por los canales venecianos?
Estamos convencidos de que el Mediterráneo sigue teniendo potencial de
crecimiento, a pesar de los nuevos destinos emergentes. Más que una amenaza,
los vemos como una fuente potencial de mercado.
¿Cuáles son los principales retos a los que se enfrentan los puertos del
Mediterráneo para seguir creciendo en el sector crucerístico?
Nuestro principal desafío es continuar promoviendo nuestra región mientras
seguimos aumentando el nivel de servicio ofrecidos a las naves de crucero en
nuestra región. Nos enfrentamos a la necesidad de adaptarnos a nuevas
regulaciones ambientales para poder evolucionar hacia una industria
sostenible, y debemos tambien encontrar la mejor forma de adaptación a una
industria de rápido crecimiento con más y mayores barcos, pero antes que nada

place of several different ancient civilizations, which makes our region the only
place in the world where cruisers can visit so many different cultures in only one
cruise, travelling between three continents: Africa, Asia and Europe.
Here you can visit from the ancient Egypt pyramids to renaissance palaces in Italy,
magnificent chateaus in France, or Gaudi buildings in Spain; from small
island villages, through medieval towns to modern skyscrapers cities; from
desert landscapes with oasis, to green national parks with lakes and rivers, and
of course beaches and wonderful coasts.
Where else in the world can you go to sleep after seeing the Parthenon and wake up
and take a ride in a gondola through the Venetian channels? We are convinced that
the Mediterranean still has growth potential, despite the fact that new destinations
are emerging. More than a threat, we see them as a potential source market.

diferentes culturas, reglamentos y procedimientos. A pesar de todo esto,
estamos avanzando juntos en muchos temas diferentes, gracias al trabajo que
estamos haciendo en la asociación.
What are the main challenges of the Mediterranean ports to continue growing in
the cruise industry?
Our main challenge is to continue promoting our area while increasing the level
of services for the cruise vessels in our region. We are facing the need to adapt to
new environmental regulations in order to evolve towards a sustainable industry;
we need to find the best ways to adapt to a fast growing industry with more and
bigger vessels, but first each port needs to identify what are the needs they must
adapt to and what is the additional investment necessary to accommodate those
vessels.
And also, and this is our bigger challenge, we must face the fact that as ports in
the same region we need to act as a whole in order to overcome the challenges,
but we integrate more than 20 countries with a variety of many different cultures,
regulations and procedures. Despite all this, we are moving forward together in
many different issues, thanks to the work we are doing in the association.
¿Qué previsiones de tráfico hay este año para el Mediterráneo?
A pesar de la crisis y los nuevos mercados emergentes, esperamos un
crecimiento del 6 al 8% en el tráfico de cruceros.
What are traffic forecasts in the Mediterranean this year?
Despite the crisis and the new emerging markets we expect an increase of 6 to

El sector de cruceros sigue viviendo un momento dulce y
así se refleja en las opiniones de los responsables de las
principales compañías. Tanto a nivel general como en el
caso español, grupos como MSC Cruceros, Royal
Caribbean o Costa Cruceros se muestran convencidos del
potencial de crecimiento que sigue habiendo en un
mercado que parece no tener fin. Los turistas que
apuestan por pasar sus vacaciones en un crucero
aumentan cada año, pero esto no sería así, con toda
probabilidad, si las navieras no fueran capaces de
reinventarse temporada tras temporada. Esto es lo que
opinan algunos de los artífices del éxito de un sector que
parece haber encontrado su “el dorado” particular.
Optimism thrives in a
growing sector
The cruise sector is till enjoying good times and that is
reflected in the opinions of those in charge at the main
companies. Both internationally as well as in Spain,
groups like MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean or Costa
Cruises are convinced about the potential growth that
exists in a market that appears to be limitless. The
number of tourists deciding to spend their holidays on
board a cruise is increasing year on year, but that
probably wouldn't be the case if shipping lines weren't
able to reinvent themselves season after season. This is
the opinion of those who are instrumental in the success
of a sector that seems to have found its own El Dorado.

Mejoría, potencial, crecimiento… Son solo algunas de las palabras que los
representantes de distintas compañías de cruceros utilizan para calificar la
temporada de 2013. Es el caso de Marc Pedrol, director de Marketing y
Comunicación de Royal Caribbean en España y Francia, quien asegura que
observa “una mejora clara, tanto del sector turístico en general como del
mercado de cruceros. Creemos que en 2013 habrá una ligera mejoría respecto
a 2012 en cuanto a volumen, pero sobre todo en cuanto a rentabilidad,
provocada por los esfuerzos de todos los entes del sector y una ligera
recuperación económica por parte de la sociedad”.
Sobre el mercado español en particular, Emiliano González, director general de
MSC Cruceros asegura que “tiene un potencial de desarrollo muy alto, si
pensamos por ejemplo que todavía quedan muchos españoles que no han
realizado un crucero”. Por ello, desde esta compañía “apostamos firmemente
por España con un gran número de puertos de embarque y con el
posicionamiento del nuevo buque que inauguramos en marzo, ‘MSC Preziosa’,
en un itinerario con salida desde Barcelona todos los viernes”.
Se trata de una opinión similar a la expresada por Bernardo Echevarría,
vicepresidente de Ventas de Costa Cruceros e Ibero Cruceros. “Sin querer caer
en un optimismo excesivo, el mercado español sigue siendo un mercado
atractivo para nosotros. Es innegable que la profunda crisis económica que se
vive le ha afectado y ha cambiado los hábitos de consumo y vacaciones de
millones de personas, pero la interesantísima relación calidad precio del
producto Costa, hace que cada vez más los españoles nos elijan como la mejor
opción para confiarnos sus vacaciones”.
Improvements, potential, growth… these are just some of the words that the
representatives of different cruise companies use to qualify the 2013 season. In
the case of Marc Pedrol, Royal Caribbean's marketing and communication
manager for Spain and France, he sees “a clear improvement, both in the general
tourism sector as well as the cruise market. We believe that in 2013 there will be
a slight improvement on 2012 in terms of volume, but in particular there is
expected to be more profitability as a result of all the efforts made by the
organisations in the sector, as well as a slight economic recovery.”
Regarding the Spanish market in particular, Emiliano González, the general
manager of MSC Cruises, believes that “it has a very high potential for
development, if we think for example that many Spaniards have yet to go on a
cruise.” For this reason, “we are firmly backing Spain with a large number of
ports to embark from and with the positioning of the new ship we are inaugurating
in March. The ‘MSC Preziosa’ has an itinerary to set sail from Barcelona every
Friday”.
It is a similar opinion to that expressed by Bernardo Echevarría, the vice-president
of sales for Costa Cruises and Ibero Cruises. “Without wishing to be over
optimistic, the Spanish market is still an attractive one for us. The profound crisis
is undeniable and it has changed the consumption habits and holidays of millions
of people, but Costa's good value for money product means that increasingly
more Spaniards place their trust in us as the best option when arranging their
holidays.”
Democratisation
Echevarría adds: “In the Spanish market, we have seen significant growth over
recent years in terms of passenger volumes, especially in the last decade. This is
due, in part, to the way the perception of cruises has changed, and everybody

Echevarría añade: “En el mercado español, hemos visto en los últimos años un
gran crecimiento en el volumen de cruceristas, especialmente en los últimos
10. Esto se debe, en parte, a que la percepción de la población sobre los
cruceros ha cambiado y ya ahora todo el mundo sabe que son una oferta
familiar completa a muy buen precio. En definitiva, estamos frente a lo que
podemos considerar la democratización de los cruceros”.
Emiliano González también coincide en esta democratización del producto. Y en
el derribo de otras falsas quimeras. “Es muy positivo el hecho de que en los
últimos años se han desterrado los mitos del crucero como un producto caro,
aburrido, dirigido sólo a gente mayor. Hoy en día, el crucero es visto como una
opción de vacaciones perfecta para todas las edades, todas las economías y
cada vez más, para cualquier época del año”.
Su justo valor
El sector ha superado, pues, algunos desafíos, aunque afronta otros nuevos,
como señala Marc Pedrol. “La industria del crucero, como el turismo en
general, se enfrenta a numerosos retos como la crisis económica, la
desestacionalización, el cambio de perfil del crucerista o la popularización de
precios. A medio plazo, también observamos un aumento de la oferta en
algunas zonas que puede generar guerras de precio, desprestigiando el valor
del producto”.
Sobre este último punto, el precio, las navieras coinciden en señalar que hay
que poner en valor lo que ofrecen. Así lo expresa el vicepresidente de Ventas de
Costa Cruceros e Ibero Cruceros. “En 2012, hemos observado en el mercado
una reducción de precios general a través de importantes descuentos para así

option for all ages, for every pocket and, increasingly so, for any season of the
year.”
Real value
The sector has overcome some of its challenges, although it is facing other new
ones, as Marc Pedrol points out. “The cruise industry, like tourism in general, is
facing numerous challenges such as the economic crisis, deseasonalisation, the
changing profile of cruise goers or the popularisation of prices. In the midterm,

valor real del crucero. En mi opinión es fundamental que hagamos entender a

Marc Pedrol añade que “en Royal Caribbean creemos que hay que ofrecer
precios alineados con el valor de cada producto o marca. Es cierto que ha habido
una bajada importante de éstos y habrá que remontar para seguir manteniendo
la rentabilidad. El público es consciente de que no todos los cruceros ni todas
las compañías ofrecen los mismos estándares de calidad o de servicio, y ello
determina la diferencia de precio”.

MSC este año?
La principal novedad de MSC Cruceros para este 2013
es la incorporación de una nueva joya a la flota, el
buque “MSC Preziosa”. Será la cuarta nave de la
familia Fantasia y se inaugurará el 23 marzo en
Génova para después recorrer el Mediterráneo desde
Barcelona. El buque realizará cruceros de 8 días, con
salidas todos los viernes desde el Puerto de
Barcelona y escalas en Marsella (Francia), Génova
(Italia), Nápoles (Italia), Mesina (Taormina/Italia),
Túnez y regreso a Barcelona.
Además, otro buque de la familia Fantasia, “MSC
Splendida”, realizará también embarques semanales
desde Valencia en un itinerario por Túnez (Túnez),
Civitavecchia (Roma/Italia), Génova (Italia), Marsella
(Francia), Barcelona con posibilidad de embarque y
Valencia.
¿Qué presencia tendrán en 2013 en España?

Nevertheless, at Costa we want to avoid this situation repeating itself in 2013 and
will sell our cruises at their full prices, placing the focus on improving the
company's profitability and that of its distributors too.”
“That's why –adds Bernardo Echevarría– at Costa we see 2013 as a year of
readjustments and positive changes: we will focus on offering the best product
and levels of excellence befitting the leading company in Europe, which Costa
Cruises is, but we will do it in a coherent and balanced way, assuring the
profitability of the company to be able to maintain our leading position.”
Turning to Emiliano González, he says that “at MSC Cruises we publish our prices
annually in our catalogue, in order to make them clear. Spain is a very competitive
market, in which price has been sacrificed in favour of volume and many times
the perception of the real value of cruises has been lost. In my opinion it is
fundamental to make passengers understand that a product like a cruise is much
more than a simple holiday, and what they need to value when selecting cruises
is their value for money.”
Marc Pedrol adds that “at Royal Caribbean we believe in offering prices in line
with the value of each product or trademark. It is true that there has been a
significant reduction in prices and it is essential to increase them to keep making
a profit. The public is aware that not all cruises or companies offer the same
levels of quality or service and that is what makes prices different.”
He concludes: “Under the current circumstances consumers give a lot of thought
to their decisions before booking a trip and so it is necessary to explain in a clear
and rational way the attributes that make your trademark stand out so that
consumers are sufficiently informed to pay a little more for that extra holiday
experience if they want to."

What is new at MSC this year?
The highlight at MSC Cruises for 2013 is the
incorporation of a new jewel in the fleet, the vessel
“MSC Preziosa”. It is the fourth ship in the Fantasia
family and will be inaugurated on March 23 in Genoa
before then operating in the Mediterranean out of
Barcelona. The ship will perform eight day cruises,
setting sail every Friday from the Port of Barcelona
and making calls into Marseille (France), Genoa
(Italy), Naples (Italy), Mesina (Taormina/Italia) and
Tunis (Tunisia), before returning to Barcelona.
Furthermore, another ship in the Fantasia family,
“MSC Splendida”, will also make weekly sailings
from Valencia on an itinerary including Tunis
(Tunisia), Civitavecchia (Rome/Italia), Genoa (Italia),
Marseille (Francia), Barcelona (with option to
embark) and back to Valencia.
What presence will you have in Spain in 2013?
MSC Cruises has a great presence in Spain, with a

recent years, in which passenger numbers were prioritised by reducing the prices
of cruises to levels that seemed impossible, which has had a detrimental effect
on the profitability of the companies.”
The representative of Costa Cruises is convinced that “at the companies we have
to be aware of the product we are offering, and do it coherently. In other words, to
always maintain the excellence and quality that these types of tourists expect, but
maintaining prices to allow companies to remain profitable.”
Facing this situation, the evolution of what is on offer is postulated as one of the
best moves. According to the general manager of MSC Cruises: “We are
continuously innovating so we can offer our passengers a more complete product.
For example, on the ‘MSC Preziosa’ one of the main entertainment novelties is a
new aquatic park, the Doremi Castle Aqua Park, and Vértigo, which is MSC
Cruise's longest water slide to date and the longest on the sea.”
The marketing and communications manager for Royal Caribbean in Spain and
France adds that “the new society and new consumer habits have raised the
demands of tourists regarding leisure and services. This leads to the building of
large ships that are increasingly innovative and incorporate excellent and diverse
on board services, with better technologies and safety too.”
In the case of this group, “we focus on creating large innovative common areas to
achieve that surprise element that is characterised by our product. This

años en los cuales se ha priorizado aumentar el número de pasajeros rebajando
los precios de los cruceros hasta límites que parecían imposibles, lo que ha ido
en detrimento de la rentabilidad de las compañías”.
El representante de Costa Cruceros se muestra convencido de que “las
compañías tenemos que ser conscientes del producto que ofertamos, y hacerlo
de forma coherente. Es decir, mantener siempre la excelencia y la calidad que
los consumidores de este tipo de turismo esperan, pero manteniendo unos
precios que permitan a las compañías ser rentables”.
Ante esto, la evolución de la oferta se postula como uno de los mayores

Finalmente, añadir que en 2013 continuaremos con
la construcción del “Costa Diadema”, el que será el
barco más grande y moderno de nuestra flota, con
132.500 toneladas de arqueo bruto y capacidad

En referencia al mercado nacional, desde Costa
destacamos que en 2013 seguimos apostando por
los puertos españoles e incluso hemos aumentado

el número de cruceristas en 2012 siguió la tendencia al alza de los últimos
años, tanto en plena temporada vacacional como en periodos que quedan
fuera de las estacionalidades tradicionales. Por esto, creo que, en general,
las compañías navieras esperamos crecer en 2013, quizás a un ritmo no tan
enérgico como en 2012, pero sí nos podemos plantear superar los 600.000
pasajeros en conjunto en 2013.
What is your forecast for Spanish cruise passengers?
We hope to increase the number of Spanish cruise passengers that spend
their holidays with Costa. An increase of between 6-7% is what is expected
and we aim to maintain this rhythm and increase it to two digits for the
coming years.
Spain is a market that still has great potential to be developed and the
interest from tourists in the cruise market has been increasing. Thanks to
this, the number of cruise passengers in 2012 followed the upward trend of
recent years, both in full holiday season as well as in periods outside of the
traditional dates. For this reason, I think that in general the shipping lines
hope to grow in 2013, perhaps at a less energetic rhythm than in 2012, but
we might surpass 600,000 passengers in 2013.

El sistema portuario español ha ido tejiendo, paso a paso,
una completa red de infraestructuras y servicios para el
tráfico de cruceros en la que la calidad es una de las
señas de identidad. Lejos queda el año 1992, cuando los
Juegos Olímpicos de Barcelona empezaron a traer los

primeros buques de crucero a la Ciudad Condal, que hoy
en día ha logrado situarse como cuatro puerto de cruceros
del mundo. Ahora, 21 años después, la inmensa mayoría
de los puertos españoles recibe buques de este tipo y a
sus pasajeros, que crecen año tras año –con un pequeño
bache en 2012 que este año se espera recuperar–.

Step by step, the Spanish port system has been creating a complete network of
cruise traffic installations and services, the quality of which has become one of
its defining characteristics. Faraway now is 1992 when the Olympic Games in
Barcelona brought the first cruises to the city that is now the fourth cruise port
in the world. Some 21 years later, the vast majority of Spanish ports receive these
types of vessels and their passengers, in a sector that has been increasing year
on year. Despite suffering a slight hiccup in 2012, there is expected to be a
comeback this year.

Novedades: En 2013 entrará en servicio la primera fase del nuevo muelle de cruceros
ubicado en la ampliación norte del Puerto de Valencia. Esta infraestructura constará de
dos nuevas alineaciones, de 430 y 440 metros de longitud respectivamente, cuya
construcción finalizará a finales de junio, la primera, y a finales de septiembre, la
segunda. Las dos alineaciones se construyen mediante 16 cajones de 54 metros de
largo, 10,5 metros de ancho y 15 metros de alto, que han sido construidos en el Puerto
de Sagunto y posteriormente remolcados hasta el de Valencia. Estos dos atraques, junto
a un tercero ya configurado en el segundo tramo del dique vertical de la ampliación
norte del puerto, conforman una plataforma dotada de las características necesarias
para proporcionar un óptimo servicio a los cruceros de última generación, permitiendo
el atraque de buques de hasta 362 metros de eslora, disponiendo de un calado de 14
metros. El proyecto comprende, asimismo, la construcción de una explanada de 4.350
metros cuadrados con capacidad para hasta 30 autobuses y otros vehículos para atender
al transporte de los pasajeros. Esta obra, supone una inversión de 21 millones de euros.

mucho más. Recientemente se inauguró el Barrio del Foro Romano, un yacimiento
arqueológico del siglo I formado por un complejo termal. Dichas termas son una

En diciembre de 2012 el Tesoro de la fragata “Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes”, que fue
hundida por un navío de la Armada británica cerca de la costa de Portugal, fue
recuperado por la empresa norteamericana de cazatesoros Odyssey, con 14,5 toneladas
de monedas de oro y plata. El tesoro ha sido trasladado al Museo Nacional de
Arqueología Subacuática, donde estará expuesto.

Lo más atractivo: Almería es un enclave mediterráneo de contrastes, donde playas
vírgenes coexisten con desiertos y nieve; alcazabas y mequitas, iglesias y antiguas calles
serpenteantes. La única catedral fortificada de España está a tan solo cinco minutos
desde el barco. Y desde allí se llega hasta la Alcazaba, fortaleza musulmana del siglo X.
Saliendo de la ciudad, hay maravillas como Mojácar o la Alpujarra. También puede

Novedades: Ampliación de la terminal de pasajeros. Este año hacen escala por primera

El “Azamara Quest” utilizará Sevilla como puerto base y se hará el primer turn around
completo de 700 pasajeros, lo que representará un movimiento de cerca de 1.400
pasajeros en una escala. Este buque lanza la visita a la ciudad para sus principales
eventos, Semana Santa y Feria de Abril.
Lo más atractivo: El Muelle de las Delicias está situado en una de las zonas verdes más
emblemáticas de Sevilla, como es el Parque de María Luisa. Todo ello localizado en un

Infraestructuras para cruceros: El Puerto de Vigo dispone de dos líneas de atraque en
pleno centro de la ciudad. Por un lado, el muelle de Trasatlánticos, con una línea de
atraque de 800 metros, que permite el atraque simultáneo de dos cruceros con esloras
de más de 300 metros, y un calado de 12 metros. La Terminal “Alberto Durán”,
gestionada por la empresa Vigo Cruise Terminal, dispone de cafetería, terraza y locales
comerciales y hay un gran centro comercial (A Laxe) en su salida. Por otro lado, está el
muelle de Comercio, con una línea de atraque de 250 metros, en el que está situado la
nueva terminal, “El Tinglado del Puerto”.
Novedades: En 2013 Vigo volverá a ser puerto de embarque y desembarque de la mano
de MSC Cruceros.
Lo más atractivo: Las zonas más emblemáticas de la ciudad son el Berbés, pequeño
barrio de pescadores que dio origen a Vigo y donde hoy se sitúa el puerto pesquero; A
Pedra, centro de reunión de la primitiva ciudad, ahora zona comercial y de marisquerías;
y el Casco Vello, zona histórica y antiguamente amurallada, con edificios y calles
emblemáticas. Galicia es conocida por su gastronomía, especialmente marisco y
pescado, así como por los vinos blancos con denominación de origen. La situación
geográfica de Vigo permite al pasajero desplazarse a lugares como Santiago de
Compostela, a 40 minutos; multitud de pueblos con encanto de las Rías Bajas como
Baiona, Pontevedra o Combarro, a 20 minutos; o zonas fronterizas con Portugal, como
Tuy, Santa Tecla o Valença, a media hora. Otro atractivo para el visitante son las Islas
Cíes, un verdadero paraíso natural a 40 minutos en barco desde el mismo muelle de
Cruceros.

Infraestructuras para cruceros: Los atraques se realizan habitualmente en el muelle
Comercial Oeste, que cuenta con 300 metros de línea de atraque y un calado de 13
metros. A pie de muelle, la autoridad portuaria dispone en cada escala de un punto de
información turística y facilita un servicio lanzadera al centro urbano de Vilagarcía.
Novedades: Las actuales obras de ampliación de la conexión ferroviaria del puerto a los
muelles de la zona sur permitirán a la Autoridad Portuaria liberar en un futuro el muelle
de O Ramal de actividad industrial y orientarlo a usos más ciudadanos, ganando así
atractivo para el tráfico de cruceros.
Lo más atractivo: Vilagarcía es el puerto natural de Santiago de Compostela, ciudad
histórica y monumental que se encuentra a menos de 50 kilómetros. En cuanto a
Vilagarcía y su comarca, la gastronomía, el paisaje, la oferta cultural y de tiempo libre,
las condiciones naturales de la ría de Arousa y la proximidad y facilidad de comunicación
con destinos turísticos de primer orden son algunos de sus principales atractivos.

Cruise installations: The Port of Vigo has two berthing lines right in the city centre. The
Transatlantic Quay is 800 metres long and is capable of simultaneously handling two 300
metre long cruise vessels with a depth of 12 metres. The Alberto Durán Terminal, which
is managed by the Vigo Cruise Terminal, has a cafeteria, a terrace and commercial
premises as well as a large shopping centre (A Laxe) nearby. There is also the Commerce
Quay with a 250 metre long berthing line, where the new Port Shed Terminal is located.
New: In 2013 MSC Cruises will use Vigo as a port of embarking and disembarking again.
Highlights: The most emblematic areas of the city are Berbés, a small fishing
neighbourhood that gave way to Vigo, and where the fishing port is now located; A Pedra,
the meeting centre of the primitive city, now a shopping area with plenty of seafood
restaurants; and the Old Town, the historic area that used to be walled with it's
emblematic buildings. Galicia is know for its gastronomy, especially seafood and fish, as
well as its white wines. Vigo's geographic location allows passengers to visit Santiago de
Compostela, which is just 40 minutes away; as well as the charming villages in the Rías
Bajas, such as Baiona, Pontevedra or Combarro, just 20 minutes journey; or those on the
Portuguese frontier, such as Tuy, Santa Tecla or Valença, which are at half an hour's
distance. Another visitor attraction is the Islas Cíes, a natural paradise, which is a 40
minute boat trip from the cruise quay.

En el año 2011 se inauguró la nueva Terminal de cruceros con una superficie de 500
metros cuadrados, zona wi-fi, información turística, dependencias para las fuerzas de
seguridad del Estado, Aduana, Autoridad Portuaria y operadores. Ello ha permitido el
desarrollo de nuevos servicios como el embarque y desembarque de pasajeros.
Novedades: Durante 2013 el Puerto de A Coruña continuará la línea de crecimiento que
viene experimentando en los últimos tres años en el tráfico de cruceros.
Destacan las 30 escalas de los buques de P&O Cruises. Visitarán el puerto sus barcos
“Oriana”, “Oceana”, “Ventura”, “Azura” y “Adonia”. Se mantienen las escalas del
“Empress” de Pullmantur con embarque y desembarque de pasajeros, tras el éxito de
los años anteriores.
Por otra parte, el puerto tendrá 20 días con coincidencia de dos o más cruceros el mismo
día, el “Costa Neorromantica” realizará su primera escala y el exclusivo crucero “The
World” estará atracado en A Coruña entre el 25 y el 27 de julio.

Infraestructuras para cruceros: El Puerto de Ferrol cuenta con dos atraques para
cruceros, uno de 230 metros de longitud y 9 metros de calado y otro con 450 metros de

Novedades: Este año, nuevas navieras escalarán por primera vez en el Puerto de Ferrol,
como MSC Cruceros o P&O Cruises.
Lo más atractivo: Ante todo, Ferrol tiene el encanto de su ría. Tampoco dejan impasibles
a los cruceristas su gran Arsenal y las antiguas baterías defensivas, erigidas para
defender el Puerto de Ferrol del ataque de los ingleses. Otro de los principales encantos
para el turismo de cruceros es su relación con el Camino de Santiago, ya que la dársena
ferrolana de Curuxeiras es la entrada en Galicia de los navegantes que deciden realizar
el Camino Inglés hacia el corazón de la Ruta Xacobea. También destaca el entorno
natural de la zona con acantilados de los más altos de Europa, al pie de los cuales se
encuentra San Andrés de Teixido, lugar de peregrinaje marinero, o las playas y bosques
atlánticos.

Highlights: Ferrol's main attraction is its river. Other sights include its Arsenal and the old
defensive batteries that were built to defend the Port of Ferrol from the English. Also of
interest for cruise goers is Ferrol's being a starting point for the Way of St. James as its
cruise dock is the arrival point to Galicia for pilgrims taking the English Path to Santiago
de Compostela. Also worth mentioning is the cliffs, which are the highest in Europe, at the
foot of which there is a place where sailors make a pilgrimage, known as San Andrés de
Teixido. Otherwise there are the Atlantic beaches and woods.

calado y una superficie de unas 55 hectáreas. Terminales móviles de pasajeros, servicio
de lanzaderas a la ciudad, punto de información turística en el muelle y aseos, entre
otros, componen los principales servicios a los cruceros en el Puerto de Gijón.

Infraestructuras para cruceros: El Puerto de Santander dispone de una moderna
Estación Marítima en pleno centro de la ciudad, cumpliendo con las más estrictas
normas de seguridad (ISPS) y ofreciendo a los pasajeros todos los servicios que puedan
necesitar. Está rodeada de muelles dedicados principalmente al tráfico de pasajeros. En
caso de necesidad, dispone también de otros muelles situados de 1,5 a 4 kilómetros de
la Estación Marítima. El puerto proporciona shuttle de pie de escala hasta la Estación
Marítima para cruceristas y miembros de la tripulación.
Novedades: La ciudad de Santander está cada vez más activa en la escena internacional.
El próximo año se inaugurará el Centro Botín y Santander será sede del Campeonato
Mundial de Vela (ISAF Santander 2014). Además, el puerto tendrá más del doble de
pasajeros de crucero pasando por su instalaciones, gracias entre otros a la fidelidad de
Aida, que escalará sietes veces en Santander, cinco con su nuevo buque “AIDAStella”.
Lo más atractivo: Escalar en Santander ofrece numerosas posibilidades de excursiones.
La ciudad combina en su oferta tanto los paseos por sus numerosas playas como la
visita de su amplia oferta cultural (museos, salas de exposiciones…). Además, dispone
de una gran variedad de tiendas, calles peatonales y centros comerciales para satisfacer
a los clientes más exigentes. A media hora de la ciudad se pueden visitar las famosas
Cuevas de Altamira, patrimonio de la UNESCO y consideradas la Capilla Sixtina del arte
paleolítico. Se encuentran en la maravillosa villa medieval de Santillana del Mar, que
merece también una visita por su arquitectura maravillosamente conservada y cuidada.
Otro de los atractivos de la zona es el Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno.

port provides a shuttle service to the Maritime Station for cruise passengers and crew.
New: The city of Santander is increasingly active on the international scene. Next year the
Botín Centre will be inaugurated and Santander will host the World Sailing Championship

passengers thanks largely to the loyalty of Aida, which will call into Santander seven times,

Highlights: Santander offers numerous excursion options. The city has many walks along
its numerous beaches, as well as an impressive cultural offering, including museums and
galleries. Also, it has a great variety of shops, pedestrian streets and shopping centres to
satisfy the most demanding clients. Just half an hour away from the city are the famous
Altamira caves, a world heritage site, which are considered as the Sistine Chapel of
palaeolithic art. They are located in the wonderful medieval village of Santillana del Mar,
which also deserves a visit for its marvellously conserved architecture. Another attraction
is the area is the Cabárceno Natural Park.

embarcar; Oceania, que este año celebra su XXX aniversario en España, ha programado cinco
escalas; Hapag Lloyd realizará cuatro escalas; Pullmantur vuelve con dos escalas del
“Empress” y, de nuevo, la posibilidad de embarque; Iberocruceros tendrá dos escalas del
“Grand Mistral” y también embarque; Sea Cloud, dos escalas; Fred Olsen, 3 escalas; Saga
Shippng, dos escalas; y Celebrity vuelve en cuatro ocasiones, las cuatro haciendo noche.

El número de cruceristas a nivel mundial ha sobrepasado
la barrera de los 20 millones y Europa, con el
Mediterráneo como destino estrella, se afianza como
segundo gran mercado del sector, por detrás del Caribe.
Las previsiones que los expertos manejan para este año a
nivel internacional apuntan a un nuevo incremento del
número de cruceristas y a un reforzamiento de la
contribución que el sector del crucero hace a la economía
internacional. Con estos mimbres, los puertos españoles
deberían volver este año a la senda del crecimiento, tras
el bache sufrido en 2012, cuando el tráfico de cruceristas
en el sistema portuario cayó un 5,38% hasta los 7,57
millones de pasajeros.

El sector de los cruceros ha experimentado un fuerte auge en los últimos años
y, según datos de CLIA Europa, ha continuado creciendo en el Viejo Continente
a pesar de la situación económica, hasta el punto de triplicarse el número de
cruceristas en apenas 10 años. En España, solo en 2011 –últimas cifras
disponibles al cierre de esta edición–, 703.000 españoles realizaron un crucero,
lo que supuso un incremento del 9% respecto al año anterior. Además, España
ha sido el país europeo que más ha crecido en la última década.
Por todo ello, los puertos españoles se enfrentan al reto de volver a la senda del
crecimiento en este tráfico, pero parten con cierta ventaja para superar la
prueba y es la confianza que los operadores del sector tienen depositada en el
mercado.
Pabellón español
Para demostrar que la apuesta que las navieras hacen por el mercado
español es correspondida, los puertos desembarcan un año más en Cruise
Shipping Miami, donde el pabellón español será, de nuevo, uno de los
mayores, más animados y concurridos del centro de convenciones de Miami
Beach.
Un total de 22 autoridades portuarias, coordinadas por Puertos del Estado,
estarán presentes en el Pabellón “Puertos de España” de la feria
internacional Seatrade Cruise Shipping Miami para promocionar el tráfico de
cruceros y la marca España (A Coruña, Alicante, Almería, Bahía de Algeciras,
Bahía de Cádiz, Baleares, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cartagena, Castellón, Ceuta,
Ferrol, Huelva, Málaga, Melilla, Motril, Santander, Sevilla, Tarragona,
Valencia, Vigo y Vilagarcía), a las que hay que añadir el Puerto de Palamós y
el Puerto de Roses, también integrados en el pabellón español.

For the above reasons, Spain's ports are facing up to the challenge of boosting
their cruise traffic and growing again. That said, they are confident of
surpassing the test, especially with all the trust that operators have placed in
the market.

Spanish pavilion will be one of the largest and most visited at the Miami Beach
conference centre.
A total of 22 ports, coordinated by the State Ports Authority, will be present in the
Ports of Spain pavilion at Seatrade Cruise Shipping Miami to promote cruse traffic
and the Spanish trademark (Corunna, Alicante, Almeria, Algeciras, Cadiz,
Balearics, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cartagena, Castellon, Ceuta, Ferrol, Huelva,
Malaga, Melilla, Motril, Santander, Sevilla, Tarragona, Valencia, Vigo and
Vilagarcia). The port of Palamos and the Port of Roses will also exhibit in the
Spanish pavilion.
However, the Port Authorities of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, will once
again exhibit on the “Cruises in the Atlantic Islands” stand.
Spanish business in the sector will also have a healthy presence at the fair
including VPS, TEAM, Cisam, Roca Monzó, Blue Water Shipping, Alas Marinas,

aunque colaboran estrechamente con el pabellón de España, participarán un
año más en el stand “Cruises in the Atlantic Islands”.
Estará también presente en la feria una nutrida representación del sector
empresarial español relacionado con esta industria, como es el caso de VPS,
TEAM, Cisam, Roca Monzó, Blue Water Shipping, Alas Marinas, Creuers del Port
de Barcelona, Intercruises, Transcoma Cruise & Travel, Pérez y Cía., Baleares
Consignatarios, Bergé Marítima, Rubine e Hijos y E. Durán Shipping, entre otras

Todos ellos contarán, además, con la colaboración de Tour España, a través de
la Oficina de Turismo de España en Miami, y del Consulado español en esta
ciudad norteamericana, que se vuelca año tras año con las empresas españolas
que van a la feria.

Pero además del área de exhibición, Cruise Shipping Miami es una cita
internacional inexcusable por su completo e interesante programa de
Cía., Baleares Consignatarios, Bergé Marítima, Rubine e Hijos and E. Durán
Shipping, among other companies.
All of them will be supported by Tour España, via the Spanish Tourism Office in
Miami and the Spanish consulate in the city, which makes an enormous effort
year after year to help Spanish companies visiting the fair.
The conferences
Apart from the exhibition area, Cruise Shipping Miami is an unmissable date
because of its extensive conference programme, which this year has been
boosted by the addition of more parallel sessions and new content.
UBM Live, the exhibition organiser, has opted this time round to renew the
conference programme, defining four subject categories with the aim of offering
a range of more complete and in-depth conferences: Shipbuilding, operations and
technology; Destinations and ports; Market segments, and Product development.
Also, on Monday March 11, the World Cruise Tourism Summit will be held,
organised in collaboration with the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA).
It will feature round-table debates with experts from the sector and

Del 11 al 14 de marzo, el Centro de Convenciones de Miami Beach será, un
año más, el epicentro mundial de la industria crucerística, un encuentro, el
de Cruise Shipping Miami, al que está previsto que asistan más de 11.000
profesionales y alrededor de 1.000 expositores de 121 países, para batir las
cifras logradas en la anterior edición.
Cruise Shipping Miami continúa siendo un punto de encuentro fundamental
para compradores y proveedores del sector de cruceros internacional,
dándose cita en la feria los diferentes subsectores relacionados con esta
industria: tecnologías de la información, entretenimiento, alimentación,
diseño y decoración de buques, servicios al buque, equipamiento de barcos
y destinos.
From March 11 - 14, the Miami Beach Convention Centre will once again
become the epicentre of the global cruise industry with the celebration of
Cruise Shipping Miami, which is expected to attract over 11,000 professionals
and around 1,000 exhibitors from 121 countries, with the hope of beating the

Cruise Shipping Miami continues to be a fundamental meeting point for
buyers and suppliers in the international cruise sector, including all of the
industry's sub-sectors: IT, entertainment, catering, design and ship
decoration, ship services, ship equipment and destinations.

de mercado, y Desarrollo de productos.
Además, el lunes 11 de marzo se celebrará el World Cruise Tourism Summit,
organizado en colaboración con la Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association
(FCCA), y que incluirá debates en mesas redondas en las que estarán presentes
expertos del sector y representantes de la Cruise Lines International
Association (CLIA).
El martes, día 12, se abrirá con la conferencia inaugural, la única plenaria del
evento, en la que participarán los principales ejecutivos de las grandes navieras
y asociaciones, para abordar las tendencias en el sector y su situación actual.
Por su parte, el miércoles, 13 de marzo, tendrá lugar una conferencia centrada
en Europa en la que se analizarán las condiciones económicas, particularmente
en los mercados del sur del continente; el alto coste del combustible y las
incertidumbres causadas en el sector por la Primavera Árabe. También se
hablará en esta conferencia del continuado crecimiento que experimenta el
norte de Europa y el área del Báltico y se debatirá sobre los mercados del
continente que presentan un mayor potencial.
Durante todo el día, así como el jueves, tendrán lugar conferencias sobre temas
diversos, como los mercados en expansión, las marcas de cruceros, cómo
maximizar los ingresos a bordo, la seguridad en la navegación, las excursiones,
las relaciones entre puertos y navieras, las innovaciones en la construcción de
buques o las últimas tendencias en materia medioambiental, entre otros.

On the Tuesday, the inaugural conference will take place, the event's sole plenary
session, in which the top executives from all of the big shipping companies and
associations will discuss trends in the sector and the current situation.
The following day, Wednesday March 13, there will be a conference focusing on
Europe in which the economic situation of the market will be analysed, in
particular the continent's southern markets; the high fuel costs and the
uncertainty caused by the Arab Spring. In this conference the continuous growth
in Northern Europe and in the Baltic will be discussed as well as a debate
regarding the European markets with most growth potential. On both Wednesday
and Thursday other conferences will take place about a range of subjects
including expanding markets, cruise brands, maximising onboard income, ship
safety, excursions, the relationships between ports and shipping companies,
shipbuilding innovations and the latest trends in environmental matters, among
other subjects.
