So many tangential units can come form Cinco de Mayo: the history of Mexico, the French in Mexico, French cultural influences there, and most importantly the vast indigenous cultures of Mexico. This is a compilation of activities and materials that do not need to be used sequentially. Pick and choose as most can be used independently. Or, resequence them as you prefer. Practically speaking, use the picture grids and the vocabulary for your own creative games. • Age Appropriate Oral Activities Pre-teach the vocabulary with a picture or a real object • Describe it and ask about it several times with lots of repetition. • • Ask children in Spanish to touch the map to indicate parts. Read the selection out loud a couple of times. • Cheer, give out hugs, or stamps when someone answers in Spanish. Oral Comprehension Questions 1. ¿Dónde está . . México ..los Estados Unidos? 2. ¿Cuál es la capital? 3. ¿Tiene culturas diferentes? Students circulate around the room, asking classmates to identify the letter and say/act out the verb. After they each have a turn, players trade cards and continue on to talk to another person. Hit it Students sit in small groups of 3-4. Each group receives one set of picture flashcards. Students lay the cards facing up on the desk or floor. The teacher calls out a letter in French, either alone, with the verb, or with the verb in a sentence. The first student in each group to hit the correct picture keeps it for a point. Continue with a new verb until none are remaining. Determine a winner from each group and play again. Tic Tac Toe (printable on subsequent page) Partners receive a blank tic tac toe grid, one set of flashcards, and a set of X’s and O’s (or sets of two different colored bingo chips). Shuffle the flashcards and place one on each square of the tic tac toe grid. Take turns saying the English meanings on the flashcards and placing the X or O on top of it. Even better, encourage players to use the Spanish word in a complete Spanish sentence if possible. The first player to get three in a row wins. Clear off the board, place new flashcard on the grid, and play again. Tic Tac Toe can also be played without flash cards by writing letters in each square. Phase 2--Cut the top strip of text off of each card, then play the following activities Match-up Partners separate the text cards and picture cards into two piles. They compete against the rest of the class, trying to be the first to correctly match them up again. Concentration Partners separate the text cards and the picture cards into two piles. One student shuffles the picture flashcards and places them face down on the desk or floor; the other student shuffles the text cards and places them face down on the desk or floor. Take turns flipping over one picture and one written verb, identifying both orally in the target language. If players find a match, they can keep the pair and take another turn. The player with the most matches wins. Small Group Alphabet Bingo (printable on subsequent page) Students sit in small groups of 4-5. Each group receives one set of picture flashcards; each individual receives one blank Bingo grid and fills it in with the Cinco de Mayo vocabulary from the picture cards. Shuffle the word flashcards and place them in the middle. Players take turns choosing a picture flashcard, identifying it, and saying it in a Spanish sentence. Any player who had that vocabulary word written down on his or her grid may check it off. The first player to check off every Cinco de Mayo word on his or her grid wins! www.foreignlanguagehouse.com Copyright 2010 Images by clipart.com & thistlegirldesigns.com Nombre ! ! !
