To boldly go… As this issue of SIGNIS Media shows, popular media culture actually contains its own spiritual elements, however divorced these may be from conventional religion. Today, the biggest rock group in the world, U2, promotes an overtly spiritual message. And Hollywood continues to be fascinated with spiritual and otherworldly themes. Cultural diversity was predicted to fade away under the onslaught of globalization. But the articles in our issue reveal how many different societies are still making films that are able to express their own particular spiritual and religious insights. Diversity and spirituality are still present in the media, actively challenging the forces of standardization and secularisation. And SIGNIS members, creatively exploring the worlds of film, TV, radio and cyberspace, are part of this process too. In their work, they are, in the famous words of Star Trek, boldly going where no-one has gone before…. We hope this issue will inspire and challenge you to make your own voyage of discovery… Augustine Loorthusamy President 4 I n much of the world today, spirituality has become divorced from religion. Nearly twice as many people in Britain claim to have had a spiritual experience than go to Church regularly. In Europe adherence to organised religion continues to fall, but interest in spiritual matters seems to be on the increase. At the same time since 9/11 Religion is constantly present in the media and not only in the News. Across the documentaries, human interest programmes and fiction films, religion and spiritual themes and stories seem to be omnipresent. Websites of a religious, spiritual or transcendental nature proliferate on the Internet. In films, television series, videos, DVDs, books, comics, computer games and the Internet, the world of the imagination is peopled with gods and demons, wizards and witches, angels, ghosts, vampires, saviours, messiahs and mythical heroes (Harry Potter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Superman, The Matrix). A great deal of popular music deals overtly or obliquely with spiritual themes. At the same time the advertising and marketing industries use ‘spiritual’ themes and associations to promote products from jeans (‘Jesus Jeans’) to perfume (‘Eternity’). These brand names underline how once powerful concepts or names have become detached from the religious context from which they came. But though religious words may have lost some of their original power, there seems to be an enduring belief in, or at least fascination with, the supernatural and its potential or actual interaction with everyday life. Angels and ghosts retain their appeal. In the United States today nearly three quarters of the population (72%) profess a belief in angels. Angels are even popular in China. Films of all kinds have explored the themes of angels, ghosts and the afterlife, from It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) to Almodóvar’s Volver (2006). These films and the popular success of The XFiles and other such TV programmes such as Lost suggest that traditional religious frameworks seem inadequate to the task of answering the religious and spiritual questions that trouble SIGNIS Media N°1/2007 COVERSTORY Spirituality and Popular Culture Ghost Rider many people. These entertainment programmes with their own ‘mythologies’ may be successful because they seem to respond to the feeling that traditional religion has become more preoccupied with morality than the spiritual quest. The research by Lyn Scholfield Clark among teenagers in the United States showed that many of them were looking for a spiritual approach that might be called a spirituality of ‘openness to possibilities’. The success of this popular entertainment challenges the established religious traditions to take such stories more seriously as a point of connection with post-modern sensibility and spirituality. The interest in and thirst for some kind of spiritual experience is a challenge not only to churches but also to religious communicators of all kinds. In this issue we explore how the entertainment media are dealing with religious and spiritual themes, how some religious communicators have sought to rise to this challenge and how readers, listeners and viewers have responded. For this cover story we have a special look on spirituality in cinema and popular culture. Peter Malone does this in focussing on the recent highly successful commercial American film Ghost Rider, directed by Mark Steven Johnson. One of the popular singers today is Rickie Lee Jones, whose voice and songs are heard world-wide. In her latest albums she puts the words of Jesus Christ into a modern context outside the conventions of contemporary organized religion and lays those words over music. For example, she has improvised, beat-fashion, a stream of consciousness lyric that became “I Was There.” It is a haunting piece, with only Jones and her guitar looking for the message of Christ. Some say that her quest for spirituality takes SIGNIS Media N°1/2007 Christianity away from the bloated pulpits of politics and wealth, and returns it to the streets from whence it sprang. The Jesus she sings of is the universal human spirit, more apt to turn up in everyday life. In 2007 she is touring successfully with her new album The Sermon on Exposition Boulevard. She is not the only one. Ricardo Yáñez analyses the spiritual dimension of the lyrics and videoclips of another significant popular musician today, namely Bono, the singer of the group U2 who has been a force in popular (music) culture since the 1980s. These artists show how radio, Internet and television can be important transmitters of spiritual values. Jim McDonnell Spirituality and Popular Cinema There has been a lot written on this theme, especially for the last thirty years. 2007 sees the thirtieth anniversary of the release of Star Wars. Which means that the real devotees of the film at the time are now between forty and fifty! Every so often a film appears (usually from the United States, although the Mad Max series from Australia had a worldwide impact in the 1980s) that gets the popular commentators talking about the links between spirituality, religion and cinema. It happened in the late 1990s with The Matrix. Even classical directors like Poland’s Krzysztof Zanussi declared that everybody should see The Matrix for its philosophical/ transcendent dimensions. The two sequels reinforced this opinion, especially with the range of references to religious traditions and mythologies, including Christianity. Neo was the One, a saviour who died and rose again and was loved back into life… It is 2007 and it is reassuring to note that early in the year we have a pop and popular candidate to carry on the tradition. While not recommending Ghost Rider to all but the stalwart fans of films based on comic books, especially the Marvel comics, Superman, X-Men and Daredevil, it must be said that there is a lot of religious language and symbolism here that might well offer discussion points for younger audiences, as well as adults, who like to see the links between spiritual values and the movies. Ghost Rider has been filmed by Mark Steven Johnson (who made Daredevil, a moderately successful venture but one which also had Catholic resonance) and no effort has been spared with top of the range special effects and computer work. Since the hero rides a motor bike, the effects enhance his carnival leaps through fire, over vehicles and helicopters. When he becomes the Ghost Rider (a superhuman being topped with an immense burning skull) his bike is aflame, leaving fire trails, not dust, in its wake. Ghost Rider is strong on contemporary thrills. (It should be added that its US box-office opening weekend in February 2007 was over $44,000.000, a sum which many contemporary films struggle to reach in total.) But, why choose Ghost Rider for the theme of popular culture and religion? It is a pop version of the Faust story. 5 COVERSTORY Mephistopheles appears in the form of the icon of bike riders, Easy Rider’s Peter Fonda. He buys the soul of the teenager John Blaze (Nicolas Cage) in exchange for his father’s recovery from terminal cancer. Needless to say, John does not realise what he is doing. And his motives were kind. Mephistopheles, however, puts him on hold until he is an adult in order to do the devil’s work. Meantime, the son of Mephistopheles (a malevolent Wes Bentley) is doing a Lucifer turn and raising demons to help him take over the world. It is time for John to follow in the footsteps of a legend of the American west, that of the Ghost Rider who defied Mephistopheles and stole his contract for the whole population of a town. Already, the film raises issues of good and evil, the devil and hell and selling one’s soul - though John realises that the devil has bought his soul, ‘but not my spirit’. One sequence that is religiously arresting is the Ghost Rider’s saving a young woman from a mugger. He judges that the man is evil and, gazing into this man’s eyes with his own fiery skull, he enables the sinner to see and experience all the hurt he has inflicted on innocent people. This look is referred to as ‘The Penance Gaze’. It is a flame-filled purgatorial experience - and would be useful in discussions as an image of the need for purgation and atonement which we call Purgatory. Eventually, Black Heart (Mephistopheles’ son) also experiences this purging but opts for Hell. There is quite a deal more explicit religious language and references to the Gospels. The first Vatican Council is not quoted so often these years. However, it suggested back in pre-cinema days that to understand revelation and the teaching of the Church, one of the most important means was by way of analogies. They may not have had analogies like Ghost Rider in mind. But, in the context of popular culture, they work. Peter Malone BONO, A MAN OF FAITH RATHER THAN A SINGER Through his songs he shares his spirituality by Ricardo Yáñez “Everything you know is wrong”, was one of the slogans of the ZooTV tour. That tour took Bono and his band throughout the world in the early 90s and definitively established this group of Irish musicians which, after 30 years of professional work, is at the centre of pop culture. The slogan was certainly pompous, but what can you expect from a rock star who gave to Pope John Paul II his sunglasses as a present? Bono, was born 46 years ago as Paul Hewson. His mother was Protestant and his father was Catholic and he felt he was different from the time he was a small child. During boyhood his mother died and he grew up in a part of Dublin where religious sectarism was rife. When he was 14 he happened to listen to If I had a hammer and then Bob Dylan “made him realize that there was another world to be explored”. Bono is fascinated by music because it puts him into a searching mood. U2 has reached its artistic maturity in the last 20 years; their spirituality can be seen when we look at some of the songs and video clips they have made during this time. Father Luis Garcia Orso* believes that spirituality gives a reason and direction to life, and that it can be expressed, transmitted or demonstrated through life stories. Songs and video clips tell us stories and those of Bono clearly show he is a true searching believer wishing to have others join him on this trip. Do you feel loved? In 1987 U2 made The Joshua Tree, it soon became a number one hit in 22 countries selling 12 million copies in that year, a figure that was soon doubled. In this work the theme Still I haven’t found what I’m looking for is Bono’s registered trademark. Its lyrics are full of meanings and metaphors addressed to a person who is always implied and understood. The protagonist, to the rhythm of overpowering music, runs, climbs and jumps 6 Arturo Mari’s picture of Bono meeting John Paul II on September 24th, 1999. tirelessly always looking for and uttering: “I believe in the Kingdom Come/then all the colours will bleed into one/But yes I’m still running/You broke the bonds/You loosed the chains/You carried the cross”. He is a restless Christian with a profound faith and knowing himself a sinner. Bono and his musicians are confessed frequent Bible readers. Often passages of Scripture are dealt with in their songs. For U2 the concepts of God and love are interchangeable. God is love (cf. 1 Jn. 4, 7-8) becomes the synthesis of an evangelical concept that is the basis of their spirituality. In countless songs these Irishmen refer to the most important of all commandments. Three tracks from their CD Rattle and hum (1988) are outstanding: The homage paid to Martin Luther King in Pride (In the name of love), where the civil rights leader is associated with Christ; The furious blues When love comes to town where a sinner repents and finally God part II as a tribute to John Lennon (referring to his song God, 1970), where at the end of each stanza they say “I…I believe in love”. Praying.... A short time after they had started playing together Bono, Larry Mullen Jr. and the Edge belonged to a group called Shalom to share biblical readings and live in community just as the early Christians did. This experience during their youthful years had a deep influence in the days when many of their songs sounded like praying. In Wake up dead man and When I look at the world Bono looks around and implores for the needs of the world but mostly motivates audiences to take action. The songs have the same substance: the you (whoever is listening or God) gets mixed up along the theme. The most enlightening expression of Bono’s spirituality is Grace, which came SIGNIS Media N°1/2007 COVERSTORY out in 2000, jubilee year. God’s life that acts on people’s lives, grace found a perfect definition in this track. We are one Solidarity, filial relationship, friendship and (spiritual) family, the deepest human bonds that intertwine people, are the issues of a handful of songs of these artists. Certainly they are the most moving and interesting ones. What is One? Is it an argument between two lovers reproaching each other’s mistakes? Is it the hit that helped to keep this band together during one of its more serious crises? Is it the conversation between a religious father and his son who is coming out of the closet? Is it a hymn to universal solidarity? “You say/Love is a temple/Love the higher law/You ask me to enter/But then you make me crawl/And I can’t be holding on/To what you got/When all you got is hurt/One love/One blood/One life/You got to do what you should/One life/With each other/Sisters/Brothers/ One life/But we’re not the same/We get to carry each other/Carry each other/ One/One”. One is one and all those stories. And the song itself is quite rich and powerful in its multiplicity of meanings. The 1992 video clip directed by the Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn puts it among the 20 rock classic hits. It was shot in black and white in Berlin during the period of German reunification, with Bob Hewson (Bono’s father) on it, with the members of the band in drag and the male and female Trabants (popular cars manufactured in East Germany) traveling around the city under the shadow of the remains of the wall. The images instead of anchoring one of those senses suggested by the song not only leave open all interpretations, but also create a couple more, like the imbalance of the human being confronting loneliness or the Holy Trinity. What was slightly implied in the clip of One grows in the very touching Sometimes you can’t make it on your own. The difficult relationship that Bono had with his father during his life turns into a song when Bob dies. “Listen to me now/I need to let you know/You don’t have to go it alone”. And if Sting, the English rock star with a Catholic background, who after his father’s death, published the CD The Soul Cages as a melancholy and heart- SIGNIS Media N°1/2007 breaking elegy, Bono offers another perspective. For him it’s not enough to mourn for the loss but rather he wants to talk about the love (or lack of it) that united them and to say: “We’re the same soul” and “you are the reason I sing”. Mofo, a techno song with remarkable rhythm, brings in the mother. The mother that Bono lost in his early adolescence and whose loss left him emotionally disturbed. Among the samplings and the loops, the infant drives and the demands, with the voice of The Edge on the background, Mofo speaks of the human mother-son relationship, but about transcendence as well. Another woman, Aung San Suu Kyi, inspired the track Walk on. Suu Kyi (Myanmar), the Nobel Peace Prize winner, was persecuted and finally imprisoned for many years for being a human rights activist in her country. Her commitment and dedication inspired Bono to write this song, an invitation to resist and to persevere in advocating for human rights at a social, and even personal level. The interesting aspect of Walk on, is that Bono believes that the driving force to keep up this fight is love. Liz Friedlander directed the video clip for the US market with remarkable fluency in the story telling. Shot in London it focuses on the distressing life of inhabitants of big cities in the developed world, not only in the privacy of their homes (family problems) but also in public (a child being bullied on the street). Friedlander identifies each of the musicians with the characters of the stories. A prophet… According to Scripture, the prophet was not a person able to foretell future events but one who God sends to the people to tell them things they prefer not to hear. Some U2 songs have that mark. Miss Sarajevo is one of them. The poetic structure of Bono’s music idea relates to chapter 3 of Ecclesiastes, which in 1954 had already inspired Pete Seeger to create the famous hit Turn! Turn! Turn!. Bono’s verses, in the voice of Pavarotti, resound as a cry to God: “And I’m not able to pray anymore/And I cannot hope in love anymore/And I cannot wait for love anymore”. The last track of Zooropa (1993), dedicated to contemplating the building of the European Union (further integrated through the Maastricht Treaty in 1992), is The Wandered. The wonderful voice of Johnny Cash stands out from the chorus sung by The Edge and Bono. Thematically is the perfect finale. The wanderer has walked “streets paved with gold” of developed Europe and wants to repent in order to become a prophet. The Cash/Bono prophet achieves it, reasserting his willingness to keep on doing without possessions and carrying the Word in his heart ready to teach and preach. The prophet in the Scriptures comes and goes in Bono’s imagination. But in the two last CDs the rock group expresses its intention to strip away all unnecessary things in order to travel light. Vertigo and Yahweh fall within Bono’s prophetic imagination, the first one from the visuals of video clip in a world at war (paradoxically in the Middle East and Central Asia deserts) and the latter from its lyrics. … of peace The Northern Ireland conflict has motivated a couple of U2 songs. In its third album, War, they present Sunday, Bloody Sunday inspired by the Derry incidents on January 30th, 1972. In 1997, when the peace talks between the IRA and the British government were already started, Please was born. The negotiations which culminated on April 10th, 1998 were known as the Good Friday Agreement. Please says: “and you never knew how low you’d stoop to make that call/and you never knew what was the ground till they made you crawl/and you never knew that the heaven you keep you stole”. The lines do not take a side but rather implore for peace. U2 asked the photographer Anton Corbijn to make a video for Please. The video (almost unseen in the media on its release) was only noticed in 2002 with the publication of the best of the 90s DVD). It has powerful images that open a range of possible interpretations. For the photographer it is an invitation to reflect (to kneel down) about our actions towards living together with persons of different faiths, races and ideologies. 7 COVERSTORY The peaceful relations between people of different religions were addressed again during the Vertigo World Tour 2005/2006. Bono appears on stage with a white inscription in his forehead that says “coexist”, created by the Polish artist Piotr M?odo?eniec, and that puts together in its graphic art the Islamic crescent, the Jewish Star of David and the Christian cross. He wears that outfit when he revisits Sunday, Bloody Sunday. The singer explains that the inscription represents that “Jesus, the Jews and Mohammed are all sons of Abraham” and that their followers should live as brothers and sisters. And he invites the audience to sing together “never more”, meaning that under no conditions should believers in those religions ever enter into conflict. What clearly stands out when you go through these songs and images is that the universe of these musicians is contagious. They captivate the attention of people who become open to their ideas and willing to share them. That was exactly what happened on September 24th, 1999 when Bono, with other personalities engaged in the Jubilee 2000 campaign, visited John Paul II to ask for his support. But, in spite of the many other visitors, Bono and his pair of sunglasses quickly won his Holiness’s attention. The Holy Father’s curiosity made possible the action that was registered by the photographer Arturo Mari. John Paul II captivated by Bono and (for a moment) looking at the world through his eyes. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) à Volver (2006), parmi beaucoup d’autres. On relèvera par exemple Wake up dead man [Réveille toi, homme mort], When I look at the world [Quand je regarde le monde], If God will send his Angels [Si Dieu envoyait ses anges], The Playboy Mansion [Le manoir du playboy] ou encore Yahweh [Yahvé]. Ricardo Yáñez sur notre site www.signis.net SIGNIS Media N°1/2007 Bono with the “coexist” inscription created by the Polish artist Piotr Mlodozeniec. Wake up dead man [Despierta hombre muerto], When I look at the world [Cuando miro al mundo], If God will send his Angels [Si Dios enviase sus ángeles], The Playboy Mansion [La mansion de Playboy] y Yahweh [Yavé] son algunas de ellas. SIGNIS Media N°1/2007 ADVOCACY global crises of Debt, HIV-Aids and climate change? – our ability to gain a hearing through force of argument may be ebbing away. People today are becoming less and less likely to be either ‘converted by syllogism’ or persuaded by a word. Justice and Peace and the Media Speaking the word in a world of images Rob Esdaile is Parish Priest of Our Lady of Lourdes, Thomas Ditton, Surry (UK). On New Year’s Day 2007 he was struck by something said by a pundit on a radio programme. He heard Jude Kelly, the artistic director of the South Bank Centre, observe that her teenage sons, members of a new Internet savvy generation, speak in much more strongly visual language than had her own generation. Young people, it was suggested in the programme, generally see the world in terms drawn from the new media and from the visual arts rather than learning about that world through the written page and by following the chain of logical argument. He published his reflections in the special 20th anniversary issue of Vocation for Justice, a publication of the Missionary Society of St. Columban. According to Esdaile, “The simple observation of Jude Kelly raises major challenges for those of us committed to the struggle for justice and peace in our world, because we have typically understood our task in terms of narra- SIGNIS Media N°1/2007 tive, of telling a story (or more recently, allowing others to tell their stories). Justice and Peace has built itself on rigorous analysis gathering evidence, following evidence trails to hard-andfast conclusions. Our approach has been to seek to get a hearing on the basis of the soundness of our arguments and the soul-force of our truthtelling. We have studied Church documents, read books, lobbied Members of Parliament, written articles, signed petitions, organized peaceful protests. Some among us have worked so hard! Yet, despite (or perhaps, because of) our diligence, we have often had no time for frivolity or stunts. We have been irked by the presence of celebrities (‘Who does that Bob Geldof think he is?’) and annoyed by the soft headedness of programmes such as Live Aid, BBC Children In Need and the rest. Paradoxically, and frustratingly, even as the need for our voice to be heard increases – who can doubt the urgency of the regional crises of the Middle East, the Horn of Africa and elsewhere, or the Amidst the babble of vices that compete for attention across our digitalized airwaves and by means of webcasts, cellphones and satellite dishes, it becomes ever harder to speak words that really matter, truths that are more than a private opinion, conclusions that convince; it becomes ever harder to achieve a common narrative, in other words. There is certainly something noble about the endeavour of Al Gore, reported in An Inconvenient Truth, to criss-cross the world (by jet plane!) winning over hearts and minds one by one to the need to change our lifestyles radically to save the planet. But the effort seems tinged with folly, for all that it has made possible a new debate about protection the environment. Gore’s is a foolish undertaking; foolish, that is, unless we compare the former US Vice-President’s strategy to that of St. Paul. Paul cannot seriously have believed that he had “fully carried out the preaching of the Gospel of Christ all the way from Jerusalem to Illyricum” (Rom 15. 19), if by that he meant having proclaimed Christ to the whole population of South –West Asia. But if what Paul undertook was something symbolic – a making visible of the Gospel in communities of faith across the Roman world – then he had indeed completed his task by the time he set sail for Europe and his own death. If it wishes to speak to new, more intuitive, image-driven generations, Christian action for Justice and Peace needs to re-appropriate that visual, symbolic space, the space that Jesus called the Kingdom of God, the space of the parable. (…) Whether or not we ‘change the world’ in the sense of moving the levers of powers in favour of the most vulnerable citizens of our planet, we can here and now symbolize through poetic and parabolic acts a world that is already changed by Christ. And those very acts are the language best able to speak to our contemporaries and to renew our world.” www.colombans.co.uk. www.colomban.com Email: [email protected] Rob Esdaile 11 DIVERSITÉ CULTURELLE Ecrans d’ici et d’ailleurs Téhéran, Ougadougou, Berlin, La Havane Tsotsi C ultural diversity was the theme of the 20th Pan-African Film and Television Festival in Ouagadougou. It is not by chance. African films and audiovisual productions are at the frontline of a war which is called globalisation, standardisation and industrialisation. Film aesthetics and storytelling are seen more as commercial products then as expressions of a culture. In Fespaco you could see Faro, the Queen of the River from Mali, which is a confrontation between modernity and the traditional way of life in a small fishing community but also Tsotsi, produced in the modern urban world of Johannesburg and its apocalyptic life of the slums where community and traditional life is reduced to almost nothing and where poverty and violence reign. Gavin Wood’s film won the best foreign language Oscar in 2006. This year at Fespaco Tsotsi received the award of the SIGNIS Jury. Different worlds and different ways of telling stories, underlining the rich cultural diversity of African cinema! The Golden Stallion of Yennenga went to the Nigerian director Newton Aduaka for Ezra. The Berlin Film Festival also showed a richness in the telling of stories and the diverse ways of looking at the common human experience of death. In the way in which every culture looks at death one can find much in common but also differences. It is remarkable how in a number of these films from all parts of the world film-makers create stories with a spiritual element. What is remarkable is that 12 almost none of these films are “pessimistic” and “strange art-house productions”. They are big productions for mainstream cinemas. Letters from Iwo Jima by Clint Eastwood or Joseph Cedar’s Beaufort explore the significance of dying for a symbol (nationalism and heroism) and this gives these films a special and extra dimension in addition to their entertainment value. The winner of the Ecumenical prize in Panorama was Getting Home, a bit of a Chinese shaggy dog story. We are introduced to a middle-aged worker and his drinking companion, only to find that the companion is dead. He had promised to take his friend’s body back home should he die, so it is only right that Zhao do the same. This is an amusing and moving odyssey, a Chinese road movie where Zhao, as he remains faithful to his promise, becomes all the more endearing as he goes through all kinds of adventures and misadventures – being robbed by bandits in a bus, being robbed in a hostel by a truck driver, meeting many kinds of people on the way, even an old man who organizes his own (fake) funeral and pays the people of the village to weep before his coffin in which he is lying (alive). The old man has no family and he wants to have the idea that he is beloved by everyone. It is a reflection on dying in a community. A human comedy. See www.signis.net FAJR FESTIVAL Coexistence of Christians and Muslims in Iran Each year there is a special section for Iranian films, which the Interfaith jury selects from. The process of judging is an experience of shared values between Muslims and Catholics. In 2007 there were a substantial proportion of films with explicitly religious themes. Four of the films screened explored relationships between Muslims and Armenian Christians in an Iranian context. Robin, the most significant and winner, portrays a remote mountain village and the villagers’ ordinary way of life where Christianity and Islam co-exist. The priest brings a huge crucifix to adorn his Church, and the crowds gather to watch, while, the imam gives advice in the village and the custodian of the Islamic shrine laments that there are not more relics. The film focuses is on a boy who, frightened by another, falls to his death. The boy gets his Christian friend to steal the cross as he thinks the breath of Jesus can bring people back to life. The film then shows the two boys carrying the cross down to the river, and going to the Islamic shrine to take a helmet, one of the relics of imam Hossein. There is a lot of discussion about Jesus as Son of God, his death, miracles, and life after death. The film ends with the miracle – coming through the clouds and down into the valley a huge sigh that is the breath of Jesus bringing the boy back to life. A commendation was given to The Sun Shines Equally on Everybody by Abbas Rafei 2007. The film portrays a Christian woman who has lost her faith. She is contacted by a Muslim friend and asked to participate in a mission: to abduct her terminally ill husband from hospital and take him to a shrine. The film shows the Muslim woman’s faith, confident that a miracle will happen. The Christian woman SIGNIS Media N°1/2007 DIVERSITÉ CULTURELLE is more rational. However, she experiences guidance during her journey. At a Muslim shrine in the woods, she has a profound religious experience and talks in dream to a nun, a symbol of God. Another commendation went to Barefoot in Heaven, a very spiritual film about belief, self-sacrifice and holiness. The grand prize winner, Maundy Thursday is about the relationship between Yu-jeong, a suicidal female professor, and Yun-soo, a convict facing death. The film drew some 3.5 million filmgoers. “Most entries submitted dealt with human life. This reflects a concern about the direction our society is going: neglecting life and spreading the culture of death,” said Bishop Paul Choi Deog-ki of Suwon. “Through the media we hope to restore mankind’s criteria for judgment, determination of values, ... sources of inspiration and models for living, which currently stand in contrast to the Word of God and his plan of salvation,” the prelate continued. Other awards were presented for broadcasting (radio and television), film, print journalism and publishing (books and magazines), as well as a special award. The grand prize winner received 3 million won (US$3,240) and the other winners 1 million won (US$1,080) each. Special awards are given to individuals or groups. Source: UCA News PHILIPPINES Film criticsm and faith seminar Organized on January 15-17, 2007 by the Communication Foundation for Asia with funding support from SIGNIS, the seminar served as an eye-opener for participating nuns, priests, teachers, media practitioners, NGO communicators and film reviewers. Peter Malone was the main resource person at the three-day event. He also conducted a similar course at the 16 University of Dayton in Ohio some time ago. During the seminar, Malone traced the development of Christian spirituality and imagery exhibited in various Jesus films, starting with the early theatrical depictions of Jesus in such silent movies as Cecil B. de Mille’s King of Kings in 1927 up to the recent portrayal of the intensely suffering Jesus in Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ (2005). One interesting workshop exercise was the analysis and discussion of different film depictions of the scene where the adulterous woman is about to be stoned. Another workshop discussion was on the symbols and significance of the more recent film The Phone Booth, which participants were also asked to rate. The diversity of participants’ backgrounds and sensibilities made the discussions fresh and stimulating. Participants’ evaluation of the entire seminar was unanimously enthusiastic. At the closing programme, CFA President Fr. Filoteo Pelingon, MSC, assured the participants that this is just the first of many national and Asian seminars that CFA will be offering in the next few years. CFA Executive Director Teresita Hermano also revealed that plans are underway for a follow-up seminar, as well as for a film festival, featuring outstanding films on spiritual themes. She thanked Peter Malone and SIGNIS for making this seminar possible. FABC HONG KONG Importation of Media Education Experts in Hong Kong have called on parents and Church leaders to help guide young people in their consumption of media. In an interview with the Sunday Examiner, Lam Keung, a social worker from Caritas-Hong Kong and convenor of the Anti-Pornographic and Violence Campaign, asked parents to help children learn to differentiate good information from bad. Meanwhile, Wong Kwok-fu, executive of the Hong Kong Christian Service (Media Education), said that Media Education should teach children how to analyze, scrutinize and appreciate. Parents should spend time learning about their children’s favourite reading materials and TV programmes and give them guidance. Professor Anthony Fung Ying-him, who organizes Media Education activities for Caritas-Hong Kong said, “The Church knows it cannot rely entirely on the topdown approach in teaching the next generation... but through Media Education and seeing examples in their daily lives, SIGNIS Media N°1/2007 they can learn the right values.” He noted that of all media, the Internet has the most important impact on children. SE THAILAND Asian missionnaries and communication The Asian Mission Congress (AMC) in Chiang Mai, Thailand, October 18-22 reflected on the theme Telling the Story of Jesus in Asia with stories shared by Catholics as well as representatives of other religions. In the end, “important areas of concern” were identified by the more than 1,000 participants mainly from Asia (95%) but also from Europe, the Americas, Middle East and Oceania. These “priorities for our missionary task in Asia” include “deeper study of the Word of God,” “proclaiming Jesus especially through witness” as well as “fostering attitudes and values of humility and openness” to enrich the missionary’s personal encounter with Jesus. With regard to people of other faiths, the participants recommend education and formation “especially in our seminaries” for a more positive understanding and to remove prejudices against other religions. With regard to culture, the participants recommend “integrating local festivals and cultural forms of expression such as dance and music, art and architecture.” They also urged the promotion of a “culture of service, compassion, disciplined life, meditation, silence, simplicity, reconciliation and harmony.” The mission congress was organized by the FABC Office of Evangelization together with other FABC offices and the Holy See’s Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. Bamako is set in Mali, which is 90% Muslim, but representing all of African society, the film puts the World Bank, IMF and WTO on trial. One by one ordinary Africans - an unemployed teacher, a farmer and a fabric dyer - voice their anger at the disastrous policies which have led to increased debt, unfair trade rules and privatisation across the continent. A mock court, filmed in the director Abderrahmane Sissako’s own father’s courtyard in Bamako, provides the setting. It is where Sissako grew up with his extended family and where he remembers the passionate discussions with his father about Africa. “This film expresses the anger and frustration many African people rightly feel towards international bodies like the IMF and World Bank,” said Dionne Gravesande, head of Church networks at Christian Aid. “It delves into the reasons why the continent is facing such huge economic problems and it’s a film everyone who wants to know more about Africa’s struggle should see. Bamako definitely pushes the boundaries of debate - in this case, the relationships between powerful rich nations and the developing world.” Q-News editor Fareena Alam said: “Unscripted, raw, utterly human - Bamako takes on the policies of World Bank and the IMF with clarity and emotional punch. It’s a powerful statement from Africa’s people about the ravaging effects of globalisation and international debt, the privatisation of their natural resources such as water and the ‘war on terror’ fear-mongering that is used as an excuse for world domination. It is a call to action that cannot be ignored. We are proud to stand with Christian Aid in making sure the greatest number of people see this film and are compelled to act.” After the screening Charles Abugre, Christian Aid’s head of policy, was joined by Malian director Abderrahmane Sissako and actor Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon and Dream Girls) who makes a special appearance in the film, for an open debate on the issues raised by the film. The discussion was chaired by actress Adjoa Andoh (Casualty and Dr Who). The debate continued online through the Bamako Petition calling upon Chancellor Gordon Brown and Hilary Benn, the Secretary of State for International Development, to push for fundamental reform of the IMF and World Bank. www.bamako-themovie.com Independent Catholic News FRANCE BD : prix chrétien et œcuménique Lors du 34ème Festival d'Angoulême, le Prix de la Bande Dessinée chrétienne a www.bamako-themovie.com SIGNIS Media N°1/2007 NEWS FROM EVERYWHERE été remis au jeune dessinateur suisse Alain Auderset pour son album Robi. This is important for community building organizations. The ecumenical organization, CEPALC (Latin American Centre for Popular Communication) is aware of the important impact of these television channels which are at the service of the community. But the current government has started to privatize the television system which means that this will also affect local community television stations. In a short time such local television stations in some parts of the country have been taken over by national but also international commercial enterprises. In 2007 CEPALC will continue to collaborate with those community television stations which broadcast programmes which have a social and a cultural interest and which SIGNIS Media N°1/2007 are promoting peace. That is the reason why it has started to build a network of local television producers in the regions of Cordoba, Sucre and Boyacá which are also linked with its work with the local groups of citizens and young people who have projects and ideas for programmes but who do not have a local television station. The idea is to give a voice to local people and their stories and to broadcast locally relevant fictional and non fictional stories. CHINA TV documentary series Missing Church The fourth episode of the TV series Missing Church in China is situated in the remote southwest of China bordered with Myanmar where an ethnic minority called Jingphaw lives. Among them, 6,000 are Catholics. It is a cross-border tribe, with their majority relatives called Kachin. From them, Jingphaw Catholics gained their faith more than a century ago. Before the liberation of China, Kachin priests from Myanmar built churches and served Jingphaw Catholics in China. At the same time, Jingphaw Catholic families sent their children to seminaries in Myanmar. The tradition was broken from 1950s to 1980s, but it restarted in recent years when China implemented a policy of religious freedom. Now, Kachin priests come into China regularly regardless of the independent religion policy. Meanwhile, China trained priests also appear in the region. A big Church is being built. Will this be a new chapter for Jingphaw Catholics? Jingphaw and Kachin documents the life and faith of a tribe split between two places. The other episodes are God in Tibet, The way to Tibet, and Panda and the Church. The series is produced by Hong Kong Diocesan Audio Visual Centre International in a version spoken in Mandarin with English subtitles. He has produced and directed numerous international projects. In September 2006 he started a new TV and film production company in Munich, Loyola Productions Munich GmbH, which works in cooperation with Loyola Productions Inc., in Los Angeles. Loyola Productions Munich GmbH and Renovabis, recently completed An Auschwitz Retreat: Spirituality Beyond Religion. Filmed in the grounds of Auschwitz, Birkenau, and in Krakow, Poland, over a period of a week, it is a documentary of six retreatants and their life-changing experience of the retreat. Every November since 1995, an interfaith retreat has been held at the AuschwitzBirkenau Concentration Camps. The sites of the Holocaust become a place of prayer, introspection and meditation. American Zen Buddhist Bernie Glassman began these retreats after his own visit to Auschwitz and his sense that the place needed to be experienced in a deeper way and could become a place for people to actually bear witness to what happened there. Instructions to the Cook: A Zen Master’s Recipe for Living a Life That Matters is another documentary by Fr. Wolf (44 minutes). It is situated in an old farmhouse in America’s rural New England where Bernard Glassman, the famous American Zen Master prepares a tasty meal in a kitchen the same way that he teaches a distillation of Zen wisdom that can be used as a guide for business, social ventures, peacemaking or just life. Bernie took his philosophy and put it to work in Yonkers, New York. He founded a bakery hiring people who were considered unemployable: the homeless, former drug addicts, and parolees. His endeavours offer social outcasts hope and new life. As the film unfolds in a series of chapters on how to prepare a meal, the audience is transported from their day-to-day world into Glassman’s larger perspective on life. The Nativity Story Contemplating Mary’s Journeys of Faith. Includes photos from the movie. Pauline Books and Media, Boston, MA., 2006 pp 160 ISBN: 0819851647 Although she is the Mother of God, Mary was a woman who experienced the full range of human emotions: amazement and confusion, fear and exhaustion, tenderness and wonder, tranquillity and joy. In this inspiring book, contemporary women ponder Mary’s journeys—both spiritual and physical—and contemplate her growth as a person, a woman, a wife, a mother, a child of God. Each of these authors has made a journey of faith that has been enriched or guided by Mary’s example, and they show us how—through our roles and women and men, daughters and sons, wives and husbands, mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, professionals and religious— we can find in Mary both a role model and source of insight and encouragement for our own “journeys of faith.” The writer Sister Rose Pacatte, FSP, is the founding director of the Pauline Center for Media Studies. Sr. Rose has experience in book publishing, marketing, 16mm film, television, and radio production and writing for these media. Social Communication in Religious Traditions in Asia Volume 7. Logos Publications, Manila, 2006 pp 195. ISBN 978 971 510 1943 This book contains the presentations of a roundtable of invited scholars organized by the FABC-Office of Social Communication (FABC-OSC) on October 3-7, 2005 at Assumption University Huamak campus in Bangkok, in cooperation with the Graduate School of Philisophy and Religion of Assumption University and the Asian Research Centre for Religion and Social Communication (ARC) at St. John’s University, Bangkok. The concern of the roundtable with some 20 participants was a deeper understanding of Social Communication in Religious Traditions of Asia. Social Communication defined as the communication of and in human society is part and parcel of every religion. The question was: How is this seen and practiced in the different religious traditions of Asia? According to the editor, “With the publication of this volume, we would like to make people, especially communication scholars and theologians, more aware of the communication dimension of religions in Asia. Communication is not just the use of technical means and instruments like the mass media. It is a dimension of human and spiritual life which should be essential for any religious thinking and practice. It is also because of this that we purposely maintained and use the Vatican II expression ‘Social Communication’ which refers to all communicative processes and practices in human society.” Franz-Josef Eilers, svd, is a professor of missiology and social communication at the Divine Word School of Theology, Tagaytay City, Philippines as well as at the Graduate School of the Pontifical University of Santo Tomas in Manila. He is adjunct professor at the University of the Philippines at Los Banos, and the executive secretary of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences - Office of Social Communication. They were developed from the consultation on Stereotypical Images of Other Faiths in the Media in Kathmandu, Nepal held between 14 to 17 April 2004. The participants were from Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and the United Kingdom. To what extent are religions misrepresented in the media? Minorities are often seen as monolithic groups. They are given stereotypical images in the mass media underlining ignorance in the minds of majority communities. The bias of mainstream media results in misunderstandings and misrepresentations that are detrimental to communal harmony, national unity and international understanding. As societies around the globe grapple with terrorism and its root causes, those involved in the media look at their own work and that of colleagues and make a case for the media to set their house in order. Local information networks: Social and Technological considerations UNESCO, New Delhi, 2007 This study was witten by Seema Nair of UNESCO, Megan Jennaway of the University of Queensland and Andrew Skuse of the University of Adelaide. Jo Tachhi of Queensland University of Technology. This case study of Local Information Networks, or LINs, is aimed at understanding the nature and importance of various configurations of social and technological networks in community settings. It focuses on the experiences of a number of pilot initiatives that fall under UNESCO Information and Communication Technologies for Poverty Reduction project, developed under UNESCO’s crosscutting theme on the eradication of poverty and the global pilot project in the development of Community Multimedia Centres. Each multimedia initiative was specifically tailored to identify local information and communication needs as they relate to processes of poverty reduc- tion. Intrinsic to the programme has been an awareness that such activities need to be continuously monitored, assessed and developed in order to accommodate changing community needs and aspirations. This study reflects that process and supplements routine project monitoring with more focused research and evaluation. This very interesting booklet is available on the Net. Among the projects which are analysed there is the Namma Dhwani Media Centre, the Nabanna Information Network for Women, and the Akshaya Project. Fr. André Babel was a Swiss priest born in 1930.
