Vision Statement
“We, the people of St. Mary’s, envision a Christ centered ,
welcoming community enriched by the gifts
of a diverse heritage.
We remember our past and are open to our future:
living and sharing the Gospel with enthusiasm, joy and
celebration under the guidance and protection
of Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help.”
Recordamos nuestro pasado y estamos abiertos a nuestro
Perpetuo Socorro".
Welcome all of God’s faithful to the Christmas season! Yes, Christmas is a season. It
is a series of weeks focused on the mystery of God’s love for humanity where salvation is made man.
The Christmas Octave. December 25th until January 1st are high feasts of the Christmas
season. Meaning these eight days are special in our liturgical celebrations where each
day of the octave is celebrated as Christmas Days. Notice that capital D in days; which
means that while the 25th of December is celebrated as “the day”, but since the birth of Jesus is very important
to our faith that the celebration of “the day” cannot be done only in a day. Thus the eight days of high celebration.
Mary, Mother of God. The culmination of the octave of Christmas is the celebration of the Mary, the
Mother of God. What a beautiful way to celebrate Christmas! This Solemnity honors Mary’s role in our redemption. She was God bearer (theotokos). Mary, who willed to be God’s instrument to allow the Incarnation
of Christ to happen, keeps Christ to be born to us. She is a very loving Mother who, throughout time, keeps
revealing Christ to humanity.
The Octave of Christmas is not the end of the season. There are three important Christmas Sundays
that our Church celebrates. Those Sundays are equally important as the celebration of the birth of Jesus
Christ. Those Sundays are the Solemnities of the Holy Family, Epiphany and Baptism of the Lord. The latter
solemnities will be discussed in the next issue of the bulletin.
Solemnity of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. This Sunday is the celebration of the Holy
Family. Jesus was born to a human family. Like any normal human being, Jesus fully took on flesh and lived
like any other. That means he was born like us. He has a mother and a father. He belongs to the clan of Jesse,
King David’s ancestor (see Matthew 1).
What does this do to us? In faith, it allows us to be closer to God. As St. Paul said, Jesus, the Son of
Man, is the refulgence of the Father. Through Jesus, the Father’s glory is revealed to us. In human relationships, it allows us to strengthen our human families. It gives us inspiration to make our home the foundation
of our Church. My mother and my brothers are those who listen to my word and keep it (see Luke and parallel).
o0o
Thanks to all those who have contributed resources of time, talent and material things to make our
Christmas day celebration meaningful and beautiful. There’s many of you and you know who you are. God
bless your generosity!
Thanks, too, to all those who made our children happy. The giving tree
made their Christmas merry. Santa brought joy too!
o0o
I would like to take this space as an opportunity to invite you all to come
and see the Nativity story in 3D. Our brother, Mr. Michael Hurley, was so generous to share to us this jewel to us. This year, the Nativity scene is prepared for us
by Sr. Catherine, Mr. Hurley’s sister. Kudos to her! Take a look at our 3D Nativity story in eastern corner of the gathering space.
Father Cit
Felicitaciones a ella!
