levar a un perro al veterinario o al albergue
puede causarle mucho estrés. Si sospecha
que algo diferente va a ocurrir, puede que
no quiera caminar con correa. Así es que si va
a cargarlo es importante que el perro se sienta
seguro. Claro, como cargar a un perro depende
de su tamaño, no importa lo grande o pequeño
que sea el perro, no lo levante por las patas
delanteras solamente. Para la mayor parte de los
perros, puede cargarlos poniendo una mano en su
pecho y la otra por detrás en sus caderas.
Si el perro es grande, puede poner un brazo
por el pecho detrás de las patas delanteras y
el otro frente a sus patas traseras. (ver foto) Es
una buena idea mantener la correa en el perro
y asegurarla con una mano por si acaso el perro
trata de huir.

ringing a dog to the vet or to an animal
shelter can be stressful for the animal. If
it suspects something is up, it may not be
willing to walk on a leash. So, if you have to pick
a dog up, it is important that it feel secure. Of
course, how you pick it up depends on its size, but
no matter how large or small the dog is, don’t pick
it up by its front legs only. For most dogs you can
place one hand on its chest and the other hand
supporting it under its rump.
If the dog is big, you can put one arm across
its chest behind its front legs and the other in front
of its hind legs. (see photo) It is a good idea
to have the dog’s leash on and secured with one
hand in case the dog tries to get away.

l otro día estaba visitando a una familia
que había comprado un perro de raza hace
unos dos años. Su hija Ana quería tener una
mascota, así es que compraron esta perrita para ella. La
llamaron Brownie y la idea, según la madre, era enseñarle
responsabilidad a su hija. Brownie estaba en el patio y
Ana sólo le daba comida seca por la mañana y la bañaba
cuando podía. El resto del tiempo Brownie se pasaba
sola en el patio. Aún en fines de semana, Brownie se
quedaba sola cuando la familia se iba a visitar a sus familiares. Ya era tiempo de que Ana supiera cómo nacían
los perritos, así es que la parearon con otro perro de su
raza y Brownie tuvo cuatro perritos. Decidieron vender
los perritos y quedarse con un perrito macho, pues Ana
lo encontraba bonito. Yo me asombré cuando lo supe, ya
que ahora iban a ser dos los abandonados en el patio
y quizás con muchas pariciones más.
he other day I visited a family that had bought a
pure bred dog several years ago. Their daughter
Ana wanted to have a pet, so they bought a
little female dog for her. They named the dog Brownie and
the idea, according to the mother, was to teach responsibility to the daughter. Brownie was always in the yard,
and Ana only had to feed her every morning and bathe
her when necessary. The rest of the day Brownie spent
all alone in the yard. Even on weekends, Brownie was
left all alone while her family was away visiting relatives.
Then it was time that Ana learned how puppies are born,
so they mated her with another dog of the same breed
and Brownie had four puppies. They decided to sell the
puppies and keep one of the males because Ana thought
he was cute. I was very surprised to learn this, for now
there would be two of them abandoned in the yard and
perhaps many more births.
Llegué a mi casa destruida. Ellos estaban
cumpliendo a cabalidad con la ley: Brownie
y su hijo tenían comida, donde guarecerse y
atención veterinaria y en ninguna forma eran
maltratados; de hecho eran muy queridos por
sus amos. Pero ese cariño extra de compartir
con la familia, de sacarlos a pasear, de tenerlos pendientes al lado de una cuando se
está haciendo algo en la computadora o en la
cocina; de jugar pelota con ellos, de verlos como parte
de la familia, eso no lo tenían. Y me di cuenta de que
el amor hacia los animales y verlos como parte de la
creación no se puede legislar; eso nace de nuestro ser.
También aprendí que adoptar a un ser viviente para
enseñarle a los hijos responsabilidad no es recomendable. La responsabilidad se enseña con el cuidado de
su habitación o en cumplir con su palabra o cumplir con
citas que se hagan y principalmente por el ejemplo de
los padres, pero no se enseña responsabilidad cuidando
a un ser viviente.
I arrived home totally depressed. They
were complying with the letter of the law:
Brownie and her puppy had food, shelter, and
veterinarian attention and were not being
mistreated; in fact they were loved by their
owners. But the extra affection of sharing with
the family - taking them for daily walks, playing ball with them, having them at their side
while reading, working at the computer or in
the kitchen, seeing them as part of the family
– these things the dogs did not have. And I realized that
love for animals and seeing them as part of the creation
cannot be legislated; this comes from within us. I also
learned that adopting an animal in order to teach responsibility to children is not recommended. Responsibility can
be taught by teaching a child to keep her room clean or
to keep her word or to show up on time for appointments
and above all, by parents serving as an example, but not
by charging her or him with the responsibility of caring
for a living creature.

Es por esto que en Villa Michelle tratamos de ser lo
más cuidadosos posibles cuando damos un animal en
adopción. El animal tiene que salir ya esterilizado, no
sólo para controlar la población animal sino para que el
adoptante no tenga problemas de celo en el futuro y así
pueda compartir mejor con su mascota y hacerla parte
de la familia

It is for these reasons that we at Villa Michelle try
to be as careful as possible when we give an animal for
adoption. The animal has to leave vaccinated and sterilized, not only to control the animal population, but also
not to have future problems with females being in heat
and thus to be an enjoyable companion to the family.

uchas personas piensan en prevenir que
sus mascotas queden preñadas solamente encerrándolas. La verdad es que
el instinto de los animales al parecer es muy fuerte, así
que ellas pueden brincar por puertas y ventanas, romper
screenes, trepar y hasta cavar tan profundo como 6 pies
bajo tierra; perros pueden inclusive romper cadenas y
hasta parearse através de una reja.
El instinto de perros y gatos ocurre con frecuencia
entre animales salvajes y domésticos. En este caso ellos deben pelear contra depredadores para obtener los
resultados naturales de sobrevivir. Esto explica como una
gata puede tener 3 litros de leche por año con promedio
de 5 gatitos por litro. En 7 años puede producir 420,000
gatitos. Similarmente una perra puede producir 67,000
cachorros en 6 años.
Algunos de estos animales tienen la suerte de
encontrar un hogar, algunos se pierden y otros los
entregan en albergues y muchos terminan en las calles.
¿Cómo podemos evitar la sobrepoblación animal?
- Siempre opere a su mascota.
- Adopte un animal de un lugar legal que esté
inscrito.
- Siempre considere la responsabilidad y
consecuencia al obtener una mascota.
- Eduque a sus niños, amigos y familiares, vecinos
y compañeros de trabajo sobre la importancia de
esterilizar a los animales.
Usted puede ayudar a parar el sufrimiento de
generaciones futuras. Tenga a sus mascotas esterilizadas.

Why you should
sterilize your pet
M
any people think that they can prevent
their pets from becoming pregnant just
by keeping them enclosed or tied up. The
truth is that animals have such a strong instinct to breed
that they will run out the door or gate, chew through
leashes, break through screens, or climb, jump over or
dig under a 6 ft. fence in order to reach a potential mate.
Dogs can even mate through a chain link fence.
Dogs’ and cats’ instinct to breed occurs with the same
frequency as when animals were undomesticated and
lived in the wild. There they had to contend with predators
with the result that not all their offspring would survive.
This may explain why a single cat can have 3 litters a year
with an average of 5 kittens per litter. In just 7 years she
and her offspring could potentially produce 420,000 cats.
Similarly a female dog and her puppies can potentially
produce 67,000 puppies in just 6 years.
Of these animals that are lucky enough to find a home,
there are still those that get lost or whose guardians
decide they can no longer care for them and take them
to an animal shelter or abandon them on the street.
What can you do to help prevent animal
overpopulation?
- Always spay and neuter your pets.
- Always adopt your pets from a legitimate animal
shelter or a nonprofit rescue organization.
- Carefully consider all the responsibilities and
consequences of pet ownership before deciding to
get a pet and always make a lifetime commitment
to your pet.
- Educate your children, friends, other family
members, neighbors, and coworkers about the
importance of spaying and neutering.
You can help to stop generations of suffering. Have
your female pet spayed and your male pet neutered.
Don’t allow them to add to Puerto Rico’s overwhelming
animal overpopulation problem.

Perdimos un Gran Amigo
de Villa Michelle

We lose a friend of
Villa Michelle
W
erdimos a un gran amigo, Robert Smith, quien
era nuestro consultor en toda construcción
que llevábamos a cabo en Villa Michelle y
también nos ayudaba en cualquier otra materia que él
pudiera.
Bob, como lo llamábamos, era profesor de matemáticas,
pero también tenía el conocimiento para ayudarnos en
pequeños proyectos de construcción que
hacían falta en el albergue, como la Casa de
Laddy, que ofrece albergue a aquellos perros
que vienen a nuestro estacionamiento.
Bob siempre dijo presente en varias
actividades. El guiaba el truck a las 5:00am
y venía con nosotras a los pulgueros. Allí
él estaba pendiente cuando la gente nos
rodeaba buscando lo barato pues usualmente
estaba todavía obscuro. Nos regañaba cuando él creía
que vendíamos algo muy barato. En la cena vegetariana
que celebramos anualmente, él siempre vendía los tickets
del licor, un poco a regañadientes, ya que lo que el hotel
cobra por el descorche de cada botella es excesivo.
Él siempre estaba rodeado de perros y gatos en su
casa, y junto a su esposa Eileen llevaban a los perros a
su paseo cada noche. Cuando su mamá murió, se trajo
a su casa en PR la gata de su mamá para añadirla a su
familia.
Echaremos mucho de menos a nuestro amigo
y ayudante, pero estamos muy agradecidos de la
contribución que hizo en bienestar de los animales
durante su vida.

who was a consultant for all construction
matters relating to Villa Michelle and
who also gave his time to helping us in any way he was
able.
Bob, as we knew him, was a Professor of Mathematics,
but he had both the knowledge and the expertise to
carry out construction projects. He helped lay
the tiles in the cat room and helped build the
Casa de Laddy which offers shelter to those
dogs who come to our parking lot.
Bob was also there at various activities.
He would drive the truck at 5.00a.m. and come
with us to the flea market. There he kept an
eye on us as the people would surround us
looking for bargains whilst it was still dark.
He gently chided us if he thought we sold something too
cheaply. At the Vegetarian Dinner he would patiently sell
tickets for the bar, even though it irked him that we didn’t
raise much money due to the fee charged by the hotel
for opening each bottle.
He was always surrounded by dogs and cats in his
home, and together with his wife, Eileen, would take the
dogs for their nightly walks. When his mother died , he
brought her cat to Puerto Rico to add to the family.
We will miss Bob both as a friend and a helper, but
are grateful for all he contributed to the well-being of
animals during his life.

l 15 de septiembre de 2010, Georgie López
Vega fue encontrado culpable de violar la ley
154. El arrastró su caballo atándolo a su truck.
Luego de esto, el caballo no podía caminar y casi murió.
Gracias al cuidado y el amor que le dieron la buena
gente del grupo Programa de Rescate de Caballos de
Puerto Rico , ella ha podido caminar aunque cojea un
poco. El hombre que cometió este acto de crueldad
fue sentenciado a 12 años de cárcel. Felicitamos a
las personas envueltas en el rescate de Milagritos en
Aguadilla y a todas aquellas personas responsables de
llevar este caso a corte y por su éxito obtenido.
n September 15, 2010 , Georgie López
Vega was found guilty of violating the anti
cruelty law 154. He had dragged his horse
behind his truck after tying a rope around her neck. The
horse was unable to walk and nearly died. After the care
and love shown by the Horse Rescue Program of Puerto
Rico she is able to walk but with a limp. The man who
committed this act of cruelty has been sentenced to 12
years in prison. We want to congratulate the persons
involved in the rescue of Milagritos in Aguadilla and for
all those responsible for taking this case to court and for
its successful prosecution.

n Puerto Rico existen cuatro Santuarios
“Albergues de no matar animales”. Estos
son: El Faro de los Animales, Santuario Canita,
San Francisco de Asís, y El Paraíso de la Montaña. En
estos lugares se trata de rehabilitar a los animales
realengos (en su mayoría perros y gatos) a fin de que
sean candidatos para adopción de aquellas familias que
deseen tener una mascota.
here are four sanctuaries or no-kill shelters
in Puerto Rico: El Faro de los Animales,
Santuario Canita, San Francisco de Asís, and
El Paraíso de la Montaña. They rehabilitate stray animals,
mostly dogs and cats, so that they can be adopted by
families that would like to have a pet.

Hay mucha desinformación en cuanto a los santuarios
y el propósito de este artículo es aclarar algunos de los
conceptos erróneos más comunes.
1- “En los Santuarios hay política de puertas abiertas.
Los santuarios son un paraíso donde se pueden llevar
los animales no deseados y vivirán felices hasta su
muerte sin restricciones de entrada”.
Falso. Los Santuarios NO están albergando mascotas adicionales, por limitaciones de espacio y
recursos, por tanto, no pueden hacerse cargo de las
mascotas abandonadas (con o sin razones válidas).
No aceptan animales que no puedan mantener en
buenas condiciones, y esto lleva a que no existan
políticas “de puertas abiertas”.
2- “Los Santuarios no hacen eutanasia”.
Falso. En los santuarios se llevan a eutanizar animales cuando no tienen calidad de vida (ejemplo: si
el animal está enfermo sin probabilidad de mejorar,
si llega golpeado gravemente, o si es la recomendación de un veterinario licenciado.) No recurren a
esta práctica por falta de espacio o para el control
poblacional.
3- “Los Santuarios reciben ayuda económica de las
agencias públicas del país. Por tanto, vienen obligados a recoger los animales que se les lleven.”
Falso. Algunos santuarios del país reciben ayuda de
agencias públicas, otros reciben la recolección de
los desperdicios sólidos (recogido de basura). No
obstante, ninguno está obligado a recibir mascotas
que quieran abandonar.
Los Santuarios se enfocan en rehabilitar a los
animales realengos (o sea, que no tienen guardián,
ni familia). Si una persona quiere deshacerse
de su mascota tiene la obligación moral de
conseguirle un nuevo hogar o familia adoptiva.
Nota del Editor: El Sr. Gonzalez, quien trabaja para algunos santuarios en la isla,
fue invitado a escribir acerca de los santuarios en respuesta a sus
objeciones a lo dicho en un artículo en la revista anterior. Este artículo

There is a lot of misinformation about sanctuaries,
and the purpose of this article is to clarify some of the
most common misconceptions.
1. Sanctuaries have an open-door policy. They are a
paradise where you can bring unwanted animals to
live happily ever after.
False. Sanctuaries do not have such a policy. In fact,
at the moment they are not taking any more animals.
Because of limited space and resources, they cannot
take all pets that people want to give up (with or
without a good reason). They do not accept animals
that they cannot take care of properly, which is why
they do not have an open-door policy.
2. Sanctuaries do not perform euthanasia.
False. Sanctuaries euthanize animals when they do
not enjoy quality of life, for example if the animal is
sick and is not likely to get better, if it is seriously
injured, or if a licensed veterinarian recommends
euthanasia. However, euthanasia is not practiced
because of lack of space or for purposes of population
control.
3. Sanctuaries receive economic support from public
agencies and are therefore obliged to take animals
brought to them.
False. Some sanctuaries here receive help from public
agencies; others only get leftover food. In either case,
none are obliged to take all pets that individuals wish
to get rid of.
Sanctuaries focus on rehabilitating strays, that is
homeless animals. People who wish to give up their pets
have a moral obligation to find a new home for them.

statement made in the previous issue of Seres. This article does not

Preparando mascotas para
llegada de bebé
M
uchas parejas tienen mascotas antes de
comenzar una familia. Todo su amor y
atención lo enfocan en la mascota. De
repente llega un bebé a la familia quien recibe todo el
amor y atención y la mascota queda en segundo lugar.
A veces la mascota queda fuera del hogar o en el patio
o se lo regalan a alguien.
En Rhode Island, un incidente trágico sobre una
mascota que mató un bebé inspiró a Jane Deming de la
Providencia de la Liga de Rescate Animal a comenzar un
programa de entrenamiento para mascotas a adaptarse
a los bebés de familias.
Los siguientes son consejos prácticos sugeridos a
futuros padres con mascotas:
•Un cambio de rutina decepciona a la mascota, y
comienza a morder todo o hacer sus necesidades
dentro de la casa. La pareja debe asegurarse de darle
atención al perro aunque no les dé el tiempo.
•No deje a su mascota sola con el bebé en ningún
momento. Los perros y los gatos son depredadores,
y los bebés no se mueven como un humano adulto,
parecen más como un animal herido. Los perros
pueden acostumbrase a niños, pero no asocian la
conducta de un bebé comparada con la de un niño.
•Preparando una mascota antes de tiempo, antes de
dedicarse a un bebé es la mejor manera de evitar
problemas futuros. Cualquier cambio en la vida de la
mascota debe hacerse con anticipación. Colocando
portones para limitar el acceso en la casa, o quitando
privilegios, deben hacerse antes de la llegada del
bebé. Los ruidos del bebé pueden molestar a las
mascotas. Hay CDs de ruidos de bebé recomendables
para animales. Es recomendable acostumbrar a la
mascota con este CDs y eventualmente subirle el
volumen para que la mascota se acostumbre.
•Cuando el bebé nace se sugiere que se le dé un
pedazo de tela o frisa del bebé para que la mascota
reconozca al bebé por el olor.
Estas recomendaciones pueden ayudar a evitar
problemas entre la mascota y la familia.

Preparing pets

M
any couples have pets before they start a
family. All their love and attention is focused
on the pet who gets accustomed to receiving
special treatment as one of the family. One day the couple
have a baby who is now the first to receive love and care and
the pet is in second place. Sometimes the pet is banished
from the house to the patio or even given away.
In Rhode Island, a tragic incident of a pet dog killing a
baby inspired Jane Deming of the Providence Animal Rescue
League to start a program to help pets adjust and accept a
new baby and to help parents to prepare their pets for this
change in the family’s life.
The following steps are suggested to future parents
who have pets:
•The change in routine upsets the pet who may suddenly
start chewing the furniture or going to the bathroom in
the house just to get some attention. The happy parents
should make sure the dog still gets attention, even if
the time is less than before.
•Do not to leave the cat or dog alone with the baby at
any time. Dogs and cats are predators and a baby that
doesn’t move around or talk like a human may seem
more like a wounded animal than an actual person. A
dog may be used to children, but he will not associate
a baby with a child who can walk and talk.
•Preparing a pet ahead of time, before the couple is so
absorbed with feeding the baby and changing diapers
is the best way to avoid problems in the future. Any
change to the pet’s living space should be made with
anticipation. Putting in gates to limit access to part of
the house, or taking away privileges such as jumping
on the couch, should be instituted months before the
baby is born. The noise that babies make can really
bother animals. There are CDs of baby noises that are
recommended to play to any companion animal before
the baby is due. People can play the CD and gradually
increase the volume saying “Good dog” or “Good kitty”.
This way when they have a baby in the house that begins
to scream the animals won’t react.
•When the baby is born a blanket or piece of clothing of
the baby with the baby’s scent can be given to the pet
so that he can get used to it.
Hopefully, these steps can help parents avoid having to
get rid of pets because they react badly to a new baby.
