ELIZABETH CATHOLIC CHURCH GETTING THROUGH THE TOUGH TIMES “It’s going to get worse before it gets better” is a phrase that prepares us to buckle up for a rough ride. We know that enduring a difficult time will require some strenuous physical or emotional energy on our part before we experience the calm of normality. Our past experience tells us that we can endure the difficult pressure better when we know how long it will last and if we know that something better awaits us. Getting through the tough times while holding to the promise that awaits us is the message of this weekend’s readings. They point toward the promises of God’s kingdom that will come after the maelstroms and chaos of this world. IGLESIA CATÓLICA DE SANTA ELIZABETH SVDP HOLIDAY FUND DRIVE The St. Elizabeth Conference of St. Vincent de Paul invites you to share in our Thanksgiving Food Drive program. In working very closely with the needy of our parish community, we have found that many families celebrate Thanksgiving with a variety of food, adding their own unique touch to the holiday. Therefore, instead of requesting contributions of non-perishable food items for the more than fifty families we support, we are asking parishioners to simply provide a monetary contribution to our Conference. The money we raise will allow us to purchase restricted Ralphs grocery gift certificates, a type which excludes alcohol and tobacco sales, thus allowing each family to select food items which meet their individual needs for celebrating the holiday. In order to do this, we estimate that we will need to raise at least $4,000 this Thanksgiving. We thank you for your tremendous support throughout the year, and ask that you continue with your generosity and support our Thanksgiving Food Program. Checks should be made payable to St. Elizabeth SVDP, and can be either submitted or mailed to the parish center, attention Deacon Charles Mitchell, SVDP Treasurer. The parish mailing address is St. Elizabeth Church, 1879 N. Lake Ave., Altadena, CA 91001. You may also place your contribution in the collection basket, in an envelope made out to SVDP- St. Elizabeth Conference, Holiday Fund Drive. All contributions are tax deductible, and we ask that they be provided no later than November 16th. God bless you and your commitment to the needy of our parish community. Our Conference members, as well as those you help. will keep you always in their prayers. HOPE If you do not hope, you will not find what is beyond your hopes. —St. They see the priest as a witness to God’s action, a physician, if you will, rather than a judge. A person confesses sin to God while standing in front of an icon of Jesus, face to face. Without a grill, in the full light of day, near a table with an open Gospel book, the penitent asks the Lord for mercy. A priest standing to the side might offer counsel and confirm God’s gift of forgiveness. Rather than list sins and offenses, an Eastern Christian is more likely to speak of a disposition of heart toward God and neighbor, and the desire to forgive those who have wronged them. Remarkably, although only a priest can pronounce the prayers of forgiveness, lay people, including married men and women, single Christians, monks, and nuns, may witness the confession. This is akin to the ancient Celtic practice of a “soul friend” as a spiritual mentor. Bishops may bless anyone with sufficient theological knowledge and discretion to do this. Eastern Catholics in the United States have largely drifted away from this tradition and toward Latin Rite customs such as confessional screens, set formulas and prayers, and penances. Today, in the interest of preserving the authentic tradition of the Eastern Church, there is a move to restore the older form. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. However, our first African pope was elected in 189 A.D., and served for ten years. He was Pope St. Victor I, our 14th pope, the one responsible for fixing the date for the yearly celebration of Easter throughout the Christian world, and for the celebration of the liturgy in Latin. When secrets become dangerous There is no better time of year to review the important family rules that help to keep all children safe. It takes just a few moments to review with your children what to do in an emergency, who the special and safe adults in their life are, and the importance of not keeping secrets. Some secrets, like a gift for a special occasion, can be fun and safe to keep. Secrets that hurt others, involve any kind of unsafe or inappropriate touching or anything that bothers a child – are secrets that are NOT safe to keep. Help your child understand the difference. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Back to School: Secrets,” email: [email protected].
