Since Jesus otherwise shows little interest in architectural technique or military strategy, St. Augustine is problably correct when he connects Jesus’
remarks about building a tower and marching into battle to the harsh admonition that begins this Gospel pasage. Be sure, says the Lord, that you have
the ability to carry through, when you declare yourself my follower. Be sure you can reject the misuse of any relationship, even the closest, in a way that
would prevent you from follwoing through on your commitment. If “love” for parents, or anyone else , is such that it leads me to abandon or betray my
relationship with God, then I will lose those I love, lose the chance to enjoy their company in eternity. Rather, what we should be aiming for, says
Augustine, is what we read in the Acts of the Apostles about the early Christian community: “They had one heart and one soul toward God” (see Act
4:32—33). As we move toward God, we will also come closer to our neighbors, all of them, in a love not confined to this world.

Adult Faith Formation
St. Luke Wishing Well
Many Catholics are unaware that they must have received
all three Sacraments of Initiation in order to serve as a
godparent or a Confirmation sponsor. If you are a baptized
adult Catholic who has not yet received the Sacrament of
Confirmation, please do not delay! You may be asked to
be a Godparent or Confirmation Sponsor this very year and
without Confirmation, you will not be free to accept that
honor. Act now! Enroll in the next set of Adult PreSacrament classes scheduled to begin in October.
Classes are offered in both English and Spanish. Call or
visit the Office of Adult Faith Formation to enroll.
A new year of adult faith classes will soon begin. Consider
enriching your faith life by participating in the 2010-2011 Catholic Faith and
Practice Series. This year’s theme will provide you with confidence to read and
pray with the Bible. During the course of the year, you will be introduced to the
Catholic Tradition of interpreting Sacred Scripture, and you will read with other
adults the key scripture passages that shed light on the Divine Plan for our
salvation. We will meet one Saturday a month, 9:30 – 11:30am, beginning in
October and ending in May. Call the Office of Adult Faith Formation to enroll
(972-259-1832 ext.238).
The upcoming adult faith activities are:
English Bible Study Make the Sunday Liturgy of the Word more meaningful by
reading and discussing the day’s readings with others. You do not have to come
every week to benefit or “keep up.” No preparation or background study is
needed. Come when you can, -after the 7:30 Mass or before the 11am Mass.
We meet every Sunday, 9:15 – 10:45 am, in the Family Life Center (Adult Faith
Formation Room). Led by Deacon Roger and Ms. Marilyn Gette.
Ser Familia Catolica We are a group of serious adult Catholics who wish to
know our faith better so we can transform our families into schools of love.
Consider joining us for the 2010-2011 year when our focus turns to a prayerful
study of the sacraments of the Church. Led by Deacon Jose Trevino and Mr.
Jeronimo Lopez. Our first meeting for the year will be Monday, September 13.
Come to the Family Life Center (Room: Mother Theresa) at 7pm, or call the Adult
Faith Formation Office for more information. Offered in Spanish only.
Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA/RICA) If you know someone searching for
God, invite them to accompany you to our parish RCIA classes. These classes
prepare adults for Baptism, and non-Catholic Christians to enter into full
communion with the Catholic Church. They also prepare Catholic adults to
receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Communion. Classes are
conducted in both English and Spanish. Our next meeting will be Thursday,
September 9, 7 – 8:30pm. Topic: “We Believe in One God, -Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit.” All classes meet in the Family Life Center from 7:00 – 8:30pm. For
English, come to ‘Mother Teresa’; for Spanish, come to ‘Thomas Aquinas’.
Catechists! Sign up for “Ecclesiology” – and earn 5 credit hours toward
certification. Tuesday and Wednesday, October 12 and 13, 7:00 – 9:30pm.

Liturgy of the Hours: Beginning Sunday September 5, Week III
St. Luke’s School would like to introduce our “Wishing
Well” program. In the Narthex, you will see a Wishing
Well on the bulletin board. We would like for anyone who is interested
in helping the school pledge any amount of money you are able for an
item the school needs. Our first item is to help finance a new Spanish
Program called Rosetta Stone. This program is an online program that
will teach the students in Kinder through 8th grade Spanish. The total
cost of the program is $7,000. Your donations are tax deductible. If
you are interested, please fill out the index card with your name, phone
number and amount of money pledged and give to the ushers or bring
to the church rectory or school. Thank you for your support and

Featured Teacher
My name is Malani Heaton. This is my twentieth year as a
teacher and my seventeenth at St. Luke. As a family, our roots
at St. Luke are deep. My husband and his nine brothers and
sisters attended the school many years ago and my son was a
St. Luke student from Pre-K through 8th grade. We are
parishioners here and usually attend the 11a.m. Mass on
Sunday.
Irving Arts Center invited our school to participate in their
“KnoWhat2Do” educational program that teaches children
how to plan and prepare for weather disasters before they
occur. Our students were asked to use their imagination and
artistic talent to design a mascot that would embody the
characteristics of the KnoWhat2Do Program. This was met
with great success. So thank you Christopher McCallum, Robert
Harwerth, Max Ledbetter, Phillip Enuke, Gabrielle Nguyen,
Michelle Serrano, Judith Enuke and Leah George. Great job, we
are proud of you!
Fall Festival News
The Fall Festival plans are underway. Margarita Ledbetter and
Michele Peek have graciously offered to be Chairs. If anyone is
interested in helping, our next meeting will be on September 7th
at 6:00p.m.in the school library. I value each and everyone’s
input.

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court #2006, Our Lady of the
Skyways, will hold their meeting starting with a covered dish dinner at
6:30 p.m. Monday, September 13 in the Cafeteria. A program entitled
"Lydia-A Heart Opened to God" will be presented by Jo Anne Dreyer,
MTS. Lydia and her family were Jewish. Lydia prayed each day to the
God of Father Abraham. Paul, Silas, and Luke brought a different kind of
