So ends another year...
As we end this academic year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the CONTENTS
owners, staff, children and parents for all your support in making my time as Primary Trips
Acting Head such a pleasurable one. I hope you will agree, that we have had yet Secondary Trips
another successful year at Swans Primary and much of this must be accredited to Work Experience
the very hard working Senior Leadership Team. The last term is always a very Primary Concert
busy one, with a range of sports events, residential and day trips, concerts, awards Year 5 Transition Day
assemblies and our very popular talent show. The fact that so much is happening Graduations
is testimony to the commitment and dedication of all involved with the school. During the summer break,
I hope that you are able to relax and spend quality time as families. Finally, I wish you all a happy and
safe summer vacation and eagerly await Miss Karen’s return in September.

It has been a tremendously busy, but very enjoyable and successful year. In the past month, Key Stage 3
students enjoyed their visits to Paris, Sevilla and Madrid, the Activity Days were a great success, as was
the Year 11 graduation evening. At this time of year, we know that students and parents alike are
thoroughly looking forward to the well-deserved summer break. While we understand the need to switch
off and relax, we would like to stress the importance of your child’s continued learning at home, especially
when it comes to their linguistic skills. The students have worked extremely hard since last September, as
have the dedicated staff we have at Swans and I would like to put on record, my thanks to all the people
who have made the year at Swans so fulfilling and enjoyable.
I must give a special mention to Don Miguel and Mr. Rob Maldonado for ensuring the smooth running of
the school during my maternity leave.
I hope that you all enjoy the summer break and we look forward to seeing you all again on Monday 8th
September 2014, at 8.50am.

Egypt Exhibition
On Wednesday June 4th, Year 3 went to the exhibition in the Palacio
De Congresos, which was about the temple of Abu Simbel. Inside
was a giant replica of the temple with four enormous statues at the
front! We went into the temple where we found statues of Ramses
II. In the third room, there were gods which people used to pray to.
Outside, there was another exhibition of all the other treasures from
the temple. We all enjoyed learning more about Ancient Egypt!

Year 5 Transition Day
Last month, Year 5 enjoyed an afternoon packed full of exciting activities to
give them a taster of what to expect in Year 6. The afternoon began with Year 6
pupils giving a presentation and offering Year 5 the opportunity to ask
questions about next year. After lunch, Miss Kate, Miss Carly and Mr Foley had
planned activities for the children with a 'Who Killed Harry Potter?' theme! In
science, they got to test different chemicals to try and find out who killed Harry
Potter. During their drama session, the pupils
pretended to be students at Hogwarts. They worked in groups to create freeze
frames linked to Hogwarts and Harry Potter. Finally, in art they got to draw
sketches of the different suspects based on the verbal descriptions from their
classmates. Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Sierra Blanca and are now
very excited about moving up to Year 6, after the summer.
Under 15 Boys Hockey
Our Under 15 Boys’ hockey team played against Aloha, during the month of June.
They played "5 a side" matches and drew 3-3, 2-2, 1-1 and lost one game. They then
played “11 a side”, having never played on Astroturf before and lost 2-0, which was
a very respectable result. Well done to all.
Year 12 Scuba Diving Trip
An exciting afternoon of scuba diving was enjoyed by twelve
Year 12 CAS students on Tuesday 17th June. The group
arrived at the Diving Life dive centre at Puerto Deportivo,
Marbella, to experience their very first ‘Try Dive’. The
afternoon started with students receiving a briefing from the
dive centre’s assistant instructor, our own Miss Sarah Lundy.
The students learnt about the physics of diving, the equipment
they would be using, safety procedures and hand signals
before the dive. Then they were ready to get into their dive
gear. It took the students about 30 minutes to struggle into
their wetsuits, but eventually we were ready to get their scuba
units and dive! In groups of three with Miss Sarah or the dive
centre’s instructor, Marjo, the students went to dive in the bay next to the port. First, the groups
practised using the regulator to breathe with, in the water and then were ready to begin the dive.
Together, each group dived in the bay, exploring the rocky and sandy bottom, seeing lots of colourful
fish and other aquatic life. During the dive, the students also demonstrated some essential dive skills,
which allowed them to be awarded with the SSI Try Dive certificate at the end of the afternoon. Many
of the Year 12s are now keen to continue diving by completing their Open Water dive course, this
summer, with the Diving Life dive centre, and become certified divers. Well done, Year 12!

End of Year Primary Concert
After months of hard work and practice, the primary school students
performed 12 songs, 8 of which were sung by the choir and 4 played by the
brass band. The evening was hosted at the primary school, with a 15 minute
interval where refreshments were served. The performance was thoroughly
enjoyed by all and everyone was very impressed by the talent in the room.
Thank you to Miss Janice, who had put a lot of time and effort into the
recital of these children; it all paid off when parents were on their feet and
reduced to tears of pride. The children finished by performing ‘happy’ by
Pharrell Williams with zeal and enthusiasm; showing that the students of
Swans truly are happy!
Foundation Stage Trip
This year, for the school trip, our Foundation Stage Department
returned to Casa de San Martin. Early Years went first and Reception
followed two weeks later. The children love going to this special farm
and activity centre. Safety and fun are our top priorities and that's
exactly what we get there. The children are split into groups with
monitors and they take part in lots of specially created activities for
younger children. The role play hairdressing salon at the centre is a
must for all our girls, and the boys love it too. That might have
something to do with the stylist chairs, which are enormous tractor
wheels! The children go through a natural maze, into a full size tepee
for face painting and even into a Summer kitchen, where they bake delicious biscuits to bring
home. As teachers, we love to follow the children around, taking photos and watching how confident
they are with other adults and new experiences. At the end of an academic year, school trips are
valuable to the children for their physical, social and emotional development, a very big area of the
Foundation Stage Curriculum. The children also love the experience of travelling on a coach with all
their friends. This is sometimes the first coach trip the children have had and it is fantastically exciting
for them. A School trip also marks the final few weeks left of the Summer term, a time to cherish the
children in our class before we wish them well as they move into the care of their next teacher. Have a

Castellar Zoo
On June 3rd, Year 3 went to visit the animals at Castellar Zoo. When we arrived we
saw a baby tiger, it was so cute! We had to be really careful as the tiger could bite if
you stood too close. We also got to stroke a honey bear, which was extremely
sleepy! The best thing about the trip was meeting lots and lots of different animals.
It was a fantastic day out!

Million Word Challenge
Yet again, we have proof of the benefits of reading through an example made by one of our
students. Jasmijn de Grebber, Year 8, who won the Million Word Challenge run by the library this term,
recently sat a reading age test and the results were pretty amazing. It was discovered that in just one
year, since the previous test was taken in May 2013, her reading age has shot up by an incredible four
years. She now has the reading age of an adult, thanks to all her efforts to read as much as possible. That
means she has an extremely broad vocabulary range and is able to understand challenging texts with
ease. Well done Jasmijn, and keep reading!
Year 3 Cake Sale
The Canaries did a great job providing and selling cakes for our cake sale. Many
children donated very generously and we all had a lovely playtime enjoying the
delicious cakes. They managed to raise exactly €300, which will go to the charities
supported by Swans School. Well done to everyone involved.
Fund-raising for PAD
Once again, the children at Primary have been working hard to raise funds for
charity. As is an annual tradition at Swans, the children took part in a
sponsored spell to raise money for the PAD animal shelter. It was a great
success, with a total of 4300 Euros raised. Many thanks to the children and
their parents for supporting us in this endeavour.
Year 4 visit Entrerrios Farm School
The children of Year 4 had an excellent time on their residential visit
to Entrerrios farm school. They enjoyed a long country walk,
swimming, archery, rock climbing, bread-making and planting
vegetables. However, the undoubted highlight of the visit was the
party! The children put on their best party clothes and took part in
games, quizzes and dancing. The children behaved impeccably and
were a credit to our school.
Flamenco Assembly
Last Thursday June 12th, a flamenco assembly took place at the
primary school in order to celebrate the Marbella Fair and to
honor our patron, San Bernabe. We were lucky enough to enjoy a
show by the students who attend an after school flamenco
activity and their teacher, Miss Inma. These great artists
delighted us with their fantastic dancing, making Sevillanas and
Rumba look easy. After the show, even some of our teachers also
joined in Sevillana dancing. Boys and girls came dressed in
typical Andalusian dresses, the girls in “faralaes” and the boys in
“de corto”, making the assembly a happy and colorful event.

Year 8 Madrid Trip
Over thirty year 8 students thoroughly enjoyed their four action packed
days of activities in the Spanish capital, Madrid. Whisked to the city on the
high speed AVE, the group spent time relaxing after their tough end of year
examinations by visiting the Zoo and the Warner Bros. theme park. We’re
always amazed at how our students rush to highest and fastest rides that
leave their accompanying form tutors quaking in terror. Miss. Debra (8DH),
Miss. Tara (8TJ) and Mr. Anthony (8AC) fought their fears and took to the
skies with their form groups on the terrifying Superman roller-coaster and
then joined them later in navigating the wet and wild Rapidos! What excitement there was too for our
students who were in the country´s capital at the time of the coronation of a new king, Felipe VI. The
crowds and atmosphere were second to none and the students thoroughly enjoyed the grandeur of this
prestigious event - a memory many of them will be able to share with their children and
grandchildren.
The visit also included a wide range of cultural activities including touring the splendid Royal Palace
and the world famous art galleries: The Prado and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, home
of Picasso’s famous Guernica. One of the other cultural highlights of the visit was an evening at the
theatre where the group thoroughly enjoyed the Disney spectacular ‘The Lion King’.
Year 10 Work Experience
Our Year 10 students benefit greatly from the experience they gain in these
businesses. Without their support it, would not be possible to run such a successful
project. Companies as diverse as law firms and real estate agents, to veterinary
clinics and leisure activity providers, all took part. Two students revisited their
younger days by working at our Primary School. We would like to take this
opportunity to thank all of our work experience partners for 2014.
Final Assembly
The end of year assembly at Swans School is an eagerly anticipated
highlight of the school year. It is a time to reflect on the year and to
celebrate success. Rewards are given in a range of categories; Spanish,
handwriting, French, sports, English, library and EAL. Children who
have collected the most house points are also rewarded for their efforts.
The children are also very excited to find out which team has won the
house-point competition. This year the champions are the Doves. They
collected 8106 points – a fantastic effort! Children who have collected
the most house points are also rewarded for their efforts with book
tokens. The culmination of the assembly is the trophy presentation for Year 5. These recognize the
achievements of the children throughout their time at the Primary School. Mia Sullivan was awarded the
coveted Student of the Year award. Congratulations to her and for all the other winners. We wish them
well for their future studies at Sierra Blanca.

Year 9 Paris Trip
We arrived at Paris airport at around 1pm. We collected our
bags very quickly and soon we were on the way to meet our
“parents for the week”. At least so we thought. The public
transport was on strike and the private coach couldn’t meet us.
After many phone calls and help from an airport official, we
were finally picked up and taken to Lisses, a suburb of Paris.
We were eager to meet the families that we would be staying
with. As we arrived on a Sunday, we had one night to get to
know our new “parents” and we had an early night. Each day
there was a different activity. The first day we visited the
cathedral Notre Dame, we walked all around Montmartre and
had our first experience of the metro.
The next day, we climbed the Eiffel Tower (yes we went up the stairs). It was well worth it, the view
was amazing. That day Madame Dorien took us home early in order to avoid the busy trains. We went
to the shopping mall in Evry-Courcouronnes. We could not
have gone to Paris and not see the magnificent palace of
Versailles. Here Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette came to life.
What sumptuous rooms and exquisite furniture! It was
strange to imagine that they were actually living there just
before they were murdered. We went back into Paris and
could rest our legs on a boat cruise on the Seine. Paris is
beautiful, there are so many monuments!
Madame Dorien had planned dinner in a restaurant on
Thursday night. Well, we certainly worked up an appetite. We
visited the museum Le Louvre and then we walked through
the Tuilleries to the Place de la Concorde. There we took a
ride in a tuk-tuk all along the Champs Elysées, we went
shopping and we climbed the Arc de Triomphe. The
Unknown Soldier was resting and we were fatigued!
Fortunately, we took the métro to go to the restaurant. In the
heart of the students' quarter, in one of the oldest part of Paris
(Quartier Latin) this charming restaurant catered for all our
tastes. Délicieux!
And then.... the last day..... DISNEYLAND! So much fun! The
weather was fantastic and we were free to go where we wanted! We were exhausted at the end of the
day. When we went home, we had dinner and went to bed early as the next morning we had to get up
at 3am. We said good bye to our “families” and got into the coach. Again a delay! We waited an extra
90 minutes, which we would have rather spent in our beds!!! Anyway, once on the plane, we continued
to sleep and arrived back to Malaga airport in next to no time.
Our real parents were there to pick us up. What a great time we had had! But also, it was nice to be
home. Thanks to Madame Sonia, Madame Dorien, Miss Kate, Miss Anne and Mr. Jason, who looked
after us really well. They were there for us when we needed them and did everything they could to
give us the time of our life.
Vive Paris! Vive la France!

Year 6 Trip to El Chorro
Day 1
The Entrance to School
My heart was thumping so hard that I thought it might
burst. I walked down the playground stairs looking for
my friends - they were also very, very excited…
At the Bus
I suddenly found myself waiting for the bus to start
moving. I couldn´t believe it was happening. “I have
been waiting for this trip all year!” I yelled with
excitement (disturbing my exhausted partner). We
looked like real tourists, visiting Barcelona, taking lots of
photos.
El Chorro
The first thing I did when I got to that astonishing place
was to put my new bikini on (it’s very cute). The teachers
divided us into groups; I was with: Javi, Nico, Paloma,
Marcus, Alle, Viki, Miri, Karim and Alejandro. (I can’t
remember anymore!) Then, we went to swim in the lagoon.
We had a great time; we started pushing each other into
the water. Later, we did some kayaking. I was with Neeva.
It was very cool! Don Daniel told us to put our clothes on
as we were going rock climbing: many people were very
scared.
Goodbye Lake
Our last activity was archery, where Ayman was a complete professional!
When we finished, we walked around the country side for 2 kilometers
(too much for Year 6) we passed through a long, dark cave and shouted
and screamed because all the boys were trying to scare us.
Bungalow, Sweet, Bungalow
The bungalows were great! The teachers had picked a great group of us to
go in the cabins: Laura, the untidy one; Beatriz, the key keeper; Lucia, the
sleepy one; and Allegra the tidy one.
Jubilant Gymkhana
Now I had realized why they had made lots of groups for different
activities - for the cabins, for the games, for the gymkhana. We decided to
create a group called: The Selfie Group; with Javi, Nico, Hector, Alle,
Neeva and Pablo. For the gymkhana (a type of treasure hunt in which we
needed to look for clues, to find the answers hidden in different places)
we were: Nico, Hector, Miriam, Sofia and Allegra. And…guess what? We
got 2nd place!
Night, Night, Sleep Tight
As it had been a long day we snuggled up into our sleeping bags, closed
our eyes and … Zzzzzzz!

Year 6 Trip to El Chorro (continued)
Day 2
Early Morning in our cabins
I woke up all of a sudden; Laura and Allegra were already
chatting along and secretly watching TV. What time was
it? I opened Lucia’s bag and got her 1D (One Direction)
watch. It was 03:45am! As we were too excited to sleep, we
didn’t disturb anyone and waited until 08:00am so we
could go out and play. Although we only had 2 hours of
sleep we went out and had great fun with our friends.
They called us for breakfast; we had bread, jam and Cola
Cao – it was quite good.
Morning Activities
Then, we went into our teams and they asked us to go
quickly to our cabins to put our bathing suits on: we were
going to the pool! After that, we did zip line, rifle shooting
(Aksiniya got the same score as the monitor!) and lastly we
went go-karting. The one that I most liked was the gokarts; the only problem was that I crashed my kart into a tree…a VERY hard tree!
Lunch
We had…emmm…Oh yes, now I remember: we had pasta, salad and chicken curry. It was DELICIOUS.
We always had breaks after breakfasts, lunch and dinner so we usually played ‘It’ or we took photos.
Splash, Splash & Disco Party
Pool time! After our break, we jumped into the pool as if we had never seen water. It was awesome!
Many girls sunbathed and the boys..well, they just annoyed the girls! We started a fantastic disco; the
monitor showed us some African dances. They were GREAT! We had a very good time, but we were
also so tired that the Disco did not go on long.
Day 3
Sleepy Heads Wake Up
On the last day we woke up at 7am. We then went for
breakfast, had our break, packed our suitcases and
finally we got on the bus.
Flamingo Visit
We went to the most beautiful lake I’ve ever seen. I
looked and saw flamingoes standing on the sea shore!
We had an exciting tour and bought presents in the gift
shop. After that, we went to the beach and played The
Olympic Beach Games, the sack race, tug of war and
we also went into the freezing, wavy sea…I just loved
it!
Home Again
Now I’m in the bus on our way to school; I wish all trips were as good as this one. I’m sure Year 5
children will get to have the same experience next year.

Year 7 Trip to Seville
This year’s trip to Seville was extremely fun and entertaining. We did several things such as going to Isla
Magica, visiting famous monuments and going on a boat trip on the Guadalquivir River.
On the first day we visited the Parque de María Luisa and had lunch there; next we visited the Plaza de
España and the Giralda. Finally we arrived to our four star hotel and had time to unpack in our rooms
and spend time in the pool. At around eight, we had an amazing dinner at the hotel buffet and we
watched Spain versus Chile in the football; we fought until the end!
The next day, we got up extremely early to spend the day at Isla Magica. We had a great time going on
several rides such as the Jaguar and the Ciclón. We had a
delicious lunch at El Fuerte, the restaurant. In the afternoon,
we had an ice cream of our choice (thank you to Srta. Sandra),
and then enjoyed some more rides.
The
last day, we had an exquisite breakfast at the hotel and
packed our suitcases. We went on an amazing boat trip on the
Guadalquivir River and then we sadly went on the bus back to
Marbella. We stopped at a petrol station for lunch and ate
some delicious sandwiches accompanied by some fruit and an
egg, provided to us by the hotel. We had some ice cream and
went back on the bus to school.
We had an amazing time in Seville and all the students would like to thank the teachers (Stra. Sandra,
Miss Leslie, Miss Carly and Mr. John) for taking care of us. We fully enjoyed our trip and hope that, in the
future, more trips like this are organised. Thank you!
María Moro
Hi! My name is Francesca; I am 20 years old, a student at the University of Durham and ex-student of
Swans! As I am on a modern languages course, I spend my third year on a placement and I could think
of nowhere I would rather be working than Swans. I will be working throughout August in the summer
school, and then will work as a teaching assistant in the primary school, until the end of January. I am
looking for a family to live with during my time in Marbella. I am clean and tidy, can cook for myself,
consider myself to be approachable and personable, and I would be available for any babysitting or
tutoring. Having au paired in Sevilla, last summer, I know what is expected of me and am comfortable
entering a family environment and making a positive contribution! If you are interested in having me,
please get in touch! I will be in Marbella from July 7th and would be very happy to meet you and talk
about any possible accommodation.

Year 11 Graduation
The penultimate Friday of the school year, saw the annual Graduation ceremony for our Year 11
students. The evening began with a welcome speech in both English and Spanish by the Headteacher,
Miss Catherine Davies. Further speeches were ably delivered by our guest speaker, Don Ricardo Tuzni,
and by students Ranya Leguel (in English) and César Gonzales Prados (in Spanish). The students spoke
with great confidence and maturity. Other items included a lovely musical interlude by Luca de Jonge
and Sara Benkirane and a witty ode, composed and read out by Deputy Headteacher Mr Rob
Maldonado, who was also Master of Ceremonies for the evening. The formal presentation of the sashes
was performed by the Year 11 form tutors, Miss Jo Henareh and Miss Hannah O’Rourke, and, after the
customary ‘moving of the cap tassles’, all retired to the dining hall for refreshments and a great many
photographs! We are so pleased that so many of the students are returning to study IB with us, next year.
Year 13 Graduation
Students, parents and teachers gathered on a warm May evening to celebrate the graduation of Swans’
IB Diploma Class of 2014. The evening began with a welcome speech from Headteacher, Miss Catherine
Davies, and Deputy Head, Don Miguel García. The guest speaker was graduate, Borja Dopico’s father.
There then followed emotional speeches from Head Boy and Girl, Anton Brink and Amelia Walton,
followed by “An Ode to Year 13” - an amusing anecdote/tribute penned by Deputy Head, Rob
Maldonado. After the formal presentation of the certificates and donning of the sashes by form tutors,
Miss Sarah Lundy and Miss Kay Asquith, the Class of 2014 turned their caps and soaked up the
applause. A subsequent dinner in the beautiful surroundings of the restaurant, The Courtyard Marbella,
was a perfect way to round off a lovely evening.

Junio
Otro año que termina….
Como ya termina el curso, me gustaría aprovechar la ocasión para agradecer a los
propietarios del centro, personal, alumnos/as y padres todo su apoyo por hacer que
mi andadura como directora en funciones haya sido tan placentera. Creo, y estarán de
acuerdo, que hemos tenido otro año exitoso en Swans Primaria y gran parte de esto es
debido al esfuerzo del equipo de la Junta de Dirección. El último trimestre es siempre
muy ajetreado, con una gran variedad de eventos deportivos, excursiones de uno o
varios días, conciertos, asambleas con entrega de galardones y nuestro popular
concurso de talentos. El hecho de que todo esto ocurra es testimonio del compromiso
y la dedicación de todos los implicados en el colegio. Espero que puedan relajarse y
disfrutar con sus familias durante las vacaciones de verano. Por último, les deseo unas
felices vacaciones estivales y esperamos con impaciencia el regreso de Miss Karen en
Septiembre.

Year 5 viaje a Sierra
Blanca
Graduaciones Este ha sido un año muy ajetreado, pero a la vez divertido y fructífero. Los alumnos de Key Stage 3 se lo
pasaron muy bien en sus viajes a París, Sevilla y Madrid; el Día de las Actividades fue todo un éxito, como
lo fue la graduación de Year 11. En estas fechas, sabemos que tanto los estudiantes como los padres están
deseando disfrutar de sus merecidísimas vacaciones y, aunque comprendemos la necesidad de
desconectar y de relajarse, nos gustaría recordarles la importancia de que su hijo siga aprendiendo en casa,
especialmente en lo relacionado con sus habilidades lingüísticas. Me gustaría dejar constancia de que tanto
los alumnos como los profesores que tenemos en Swans, han trabajado muy duro desde septiembre. Mi
agradecimiento a todos los que han hecho que este curso haya sido tan satisfactorio y agradable. Tengo
que hacer una mención especial a D.Miguel y a D.Rob Maldonado por garantizar el buen funcionamiento
del colegio durante mi baja por maternidad. Disfruten de las vacaciones de verano y espero verles de
nuevo a todos el lunes 8 de septiembre de 2014, a las 8.50am.

Exposición sobre Egipto
El miércoles 4 de junio Year 3 fue al Palacio de Congresos para ver una
exposición sobre el templo de Abu Simbel. Dentro había una gigantesca
réplica del templo con cuatro enormes estatuas delante. Entramos y
encontramos estatuas de Ramsés II. En la tercera estancia había dioses a
los que solían adorar. Fuera del templo había también otra exposición
de todos los demás tesoros del templo. ¡Disfrutamos mucho
aprendiendo más cosas sobre el Antiguo Egipto!

Visita a Sierra Blanca
Queremos invitar a los padres de Primaria a que visiten Swans Sierra Blanca y puedan ver nuestras

Year 5 viaje a Sierra Blanca
El mes pasado, los alumnos de Year 5 disfrutaron de una tarde llena de
emocionantes actividades para darles una idea de qué les espera en Year 6. La
tarde comenzó con alumnos de Year 6 dando una presentación y ofreciendo a
Year 5 la oportunidad de hacer preguntas sobre el año que viene. Después del
almuerzo, Miss Kate, Miss Carly y Mr. Foley planearon actividades para los
niños con el tema ¿Quién mató a Harry Potter? En
ciencias, tuvieron que probar diferentes productos
químicos para ver y averiguar quién mató a Harry
Potter. Durante su sesión de drama, los alumnos pretendieron ser estudiantes
de Hogwarts. Trabajaron en grupos para crear imágenes congeladas
vinculadas a Hogwarts y a Harry Potter. Finalmente, en arte tuvieron que
dibujar los bocetos de los diferentes sospechosos basados en las descripciones
verbales de sus compañeros. Year 5 disfrutó de su viaje a Sierra Blanca y los
alumnos ahora tienen muchas ganas de ir a Year 6 después del verano.
Hockey masculino Sub15
Nuestro equipo de hockey masculino Sub15 jugó contra Aloha. Hicieron
partidos de cinco jugadores por equipo y empataron 3-3, 2-2, 1-1, perdiendo el
último juego. Después jugaron con 11 jugadores por equipo y perdieron 2-0;
resultado muy respetable teniendo en cuenta que nunca antes habían jugado
sobre césped artificial. Bien hecho a todos.
Year 12 excursión a Diving Life
El jueves 17 de junio, doce alumnos de CAS de Year 12 disfrutaron de
una emocionante tarde de submarinismo. El grupo llegó al centro de
submarinismo Diving Life en el Puerto Deportivo de Marbella para
experimentar por primera vez este deporte. La tarde empezó con una
charla a cargo de la ayudante de la instructora del centro, nuestra Miss
Sarah Lundy. Los alumnos aprendieron sobre la física del submarinismo,
el equipo que tendrían que usar, procedimientos de seguridad y las
señales con las manos antes de sumergirse. Después estuvieron listos
para ponerse el equipo de buceo. Les llevó 30 minutos meterse en sus
trajes de neopreno, pero al final ya estaban preparados para coger los aparatos de buceo y sumergirse.
En grupos de tres con Miss Sarah o con la instructora del centro de submarinismo, Marjo, los alumnos
fueron a bucear en la bahía próxima al puerto. Primero el grupo practicó con el regulador para respirar
dentro del agua y a continuación empezaron a bucear. Juntos, cada grupo buceaba en la bahía,
explorando el rocoso fondo marino, viendo un montón de peces de colores y otros seres acuáticos.
Durante la inmersión, los estudiantes también hicieron una demostración de técnicas de submarinismo
que les permitía conseguir el certificado de SSI Try Dive. Muchos de los alumnos de Year 12 quieren
continuar con esta práctica y completar este verano el curso de Open Water en el centro Diving Life y
llegar a ser buceadores certificados. ¡Bien hecho, Year 12!

Concierto de fin de curso de Primaria
Después de meses de duro trabajo y ensayos, los alumnos del colegio de
Primaria representaron 12 canciones; el coro cantó 8 y la banda de música
tocó 4. La velada la organizó el colegio de Primaria y hubo un descanso de
15 minutos entre las actuaciones en el que se sirvieron refrescos. Todo el
mundo disfrutó y se quedaron impresionados por el talento que había. Le
damos las gracias a Miss Janice por el tiempo y el esfuerzo que ha invertido
en el recital de los niños; todo valió la pena cuando se veía a los padres de
pie, enjugándose las lágrimas de orgullo.
Terminaron su actuación interpretando con fervor y entusiasmo la canción
‘Happy’ de Pharrell Williams, demostrándonos a todos que los niños de
Swans son felices de verdad. Excursión de los alumnos de Pre-escolar
Este año, el departamento de Pre-escolar volvió a Casa de San Martín
para su excursión anual. Los alumnos de “Early Years” fueron los
primeros y “Reception”, dos semanas más tarde. A los niños les
encantó ir a esta granja y centro de actividades. La seguridad y la
diversión fueron nuestras prioridades y eso es exactamente lo que
encontramos allí. Se dividió a los niños en grupos con sus monitores y
participaron en muchas actividades creativas, especiales para niños
pequeños. El salón de belleza en el centro fue una cita obligada para
las niñas, aunque los niños disfrutaron mucho también; quizás porque
las sillas de estilista eran enormes ruedas de tractor. Los niños pasan
por un laberinto natural hasta una tienda de campaña para pintarse la cara e incluso entran en una
cocina de verano donde podían hacer deliciosas galletas para llevarse a casa. Como profesores, nos
encanta estar con los niños, hacer fotos y observar lo bien que se manejan con otros adultos y con
nuevas experiencias. Al final del curso, las excursiones escolares son muy valiosas para su desarrollo
emocional, social y físico, un aspecto muy importante del programa de Pre-escolar. A los niños también
les encanta la experiencia de viajar en autobús con todos sus amigos. Algunas veces es el primer viaje
en autobús que hacen y es muy emocionante para todos ellos. Una excursión escolar también marca las
últimas pocas semanas que quedan para el verano, un tiempo para estar con los niños antes de que les
deseemos todo lo mejor con su nuevo profesor. Que tengan un seguro y feliz verano de parte de todos
los miembros del Departamento de Pre-escolar.
Zoo de Castellar
El 3 de junio, todos los alumnos de Year 3 fuimos al zoo Castellar. Cuando
llegamos vimos a un cachorro de tigre, ¡era tan mono! Teníamos que tener mucho
cuidado porque la madre te podía morder si te acercabas demasiado. También
pudimos acariciar a un oso malayo que estaba muy adormilado. Lo mejor del
viaje fue conocer a muchos animales diferentes. ¡Fue una excursion fantástica!

El desafío del millón de palabras
Una vez más, los beneficios de la lectura han quedado demostrados a través del ejemplo de una de
nuestras estudiantes. Jasmijn de Grebber, de Year 8, ganó el Desafío del Millón de Palabras organizado
por la biblioteca este último trimestre y, recientemente, se ha sometido a una prueba para saber su nivel
de lectura. Los resultados son bastante sorprendentes ya que se ha descubierto que en solo un año,
desde que se hizo la última prueba en mayo de 2013, su nivel de lectura se ha incrementado en cuatro
años. Ahora, gracias a su esfuerzo, tiene el nivel de un adulto, lo que significa que posee un amplio
vocabulario y que se puede enfrentar con facilidad a textos complicados. Bien hecho, Jasmijn, y no dejes
de leer.
Excursión de Year 1 a la granja Entrerríos
El lunes 2 de junio, Year 1 fue a la granja escuela Entrerríos. Disfrutaron de un día
completo de actividades: hicieron pan, plantaron semillas, alimentaron a los animales y aprendieron mucho de ellos, y también participaron en un espectáculo sobre
flores y abejas. ¡Todos lo pasamos muy bien!
Recaudación de fondos para PAD
Una vez más, los niños de primaria han trabajaron mucho para recaudar fondos
para la caridad. Como es una tradición anual en Swans, los niños participaron en
una prueba de palabras patrocinadas para recaudar fondos para el refugio de animales PAD. Fue un gran éxito, con un total de 4300 euros recaudados. Muchas
gracias a los niños y a sus padres por apoyarnos en esta tarea.
Venta de pasteles de Year 3
El grupo de los Canarios hicieron un trabajo fantástico en la venta de pasteles. Muchos niños los donaron generosamente y todos lo pasamos muy bien en el recreo
disfrutando de los deliciosos pasteles. Pudieron recaudar exactamente 300 euros,
que serán destinados a organizaciones caritativas a las que ayuda el colegio Swans.
¡Bien hecho a todos los que participaron!
Asamblea Flamenca
El jueves 12 de junio se celebró en el colegio una asamblea flamenca con el objeto de festejar la Feria de
Marbella y honrar a nuestro patrón, San Bernabé. Este día tuvimos la suerte de poder disfrutar de la
actuación de las niñas que asisten a la actividad extraescolar de
flamenco, junto con su profesora la Srta. Inma. Estas grandes artistas nos
deleitaron con su buen hacer, mostrando gran soltura a la hora de bailar
sevillanas y rumbas. Al final de la actuación, algunas de nuestras
profesoras también se arrancaron por sevillanas. Los niños y niñas
vinieron vestidos con los trajes típicos andaluces, ellas de faralaes y ellos
de corto, convirtiendo la asamblea en un acto muy colorido y alegre.

Viaje de Year 8 a Madrid
Alrededor de 30 alumnos de Year 8 disfrutaron de cuatro días de
actividades en la capital de España, Madrid. Transportados a velocidad de
relámpago por el tren de alta velocidad, el AVE, el grupo pudo relajarse
durante unos días después de sus duros exámenes finales, y visitar el zoo y
el parque temático Warner Bros, donde sorprende siempre ver cómo
nuestros alumnos corren hacia las atracciones más altas y rápidas que
hacen temblar de miedo a los tutores que los acompañan. Miss. Debra
(8DH), Miss. Tara (8TJ) y Mr. Anthony (8AC) lucharon contra sus miedos y
llegaron a los cielos montados con los alumnos de su grupo en la terrorífica montaña rusa Superman.
Después se juntaron todos los grupos para navegar en los salvajes Rápidos. Qué emoción era para
nuestros alumnos el estar en la capital del país en el momento de la coronación del nuevo rey, Felipe
VI. La decoración y el ambiente en la ciudad eran inmejorables y los alumnos disfrutaron de la
grandeza de este acontecimiento tan prestigioso- un recuerdo que muchos de ellos podrán compartir
con sus hijos y sus nietos. También hubo una gran variedad de actividades culturales como una visita
al espléndido Palacio Real y a las galerías de arte más famosas del mundo: El Museo del Prado y el
Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, donde se encuentra el famoso cuadro de Picasso, Guernica. Una de las
actividades culturales destacadas fue una noche en el teatro donde disfrutaron de la espectacular
representación de “El Rey León”, de Disney.
Prácticas laborales 2014
Nuestros alumnos de Year 10 aprendieron mucho teniendo la oportunidad de
trabajar en varias empresas en la Costa del Sol. Sin su ayuda, no hubiese sido posible
llevar a cabo este fructífero proyecto. Las empresas que participaron fueron tan
diversas como firmas de abogados, agencias inmobiliarias, clínicas veterinarias o
proveedores de actividades de ocio. Dos alumnos regresaron a su niñez trabajando
en nuestro colegio de primaria. Nos gustaría provechar la oportunidad para darles
las gracias a todos nuestros colaboradores en las prácticas laborales de 2014.
Asamblea Final
La Asamblea Final del curso en Swans es un punto culminante muy esperado del
año escolar. Es un momento para reflexionar sobre el año y celebrar el éxito. Se
entregan premios en una variedad de categorías; español, literatura, francés,
deportes, inglés, biblioteca y EAL. Los niños que acumularon la mayor
puntuación de “house points” también son recompensados por sus esfuerzos.
Los niños también están muy entusiasmados por averiguar qué equipo ha
ganado el concurso de “house points”. Los campeones de este año son las
palomas. Recogieron 8106 puntos – ¡un esfuerzo fantástico! Los niños que acumularon la mayor
puntuación de “house points” también recibieron fichas de libros por su esfuerzo. La culminación de la
asamblea son los trofeos que se otorgan a los alumnos de Year 5. Estos reconocen los logros de los niños
a lo largo de su tiempo en Primaria. A Mia Sullivan se le concedió el codiciado Estudiante del Año.
Felicitaciones para ella y para todos los demás ganadores. Les deseamos lo mejor para sus futuros
estudios en Sierra Blanca.

Excursión a París
Llegamos al aeropuerto de París alrededor de la 1 de la tarde.
Recogimos el equipaje rápidamente y pronto estábamos de
camino para conocer a “nuestros padres por una semana”. Al
menos eso es lo que pensábamos. El transporte público estaba
en huelga y el autobús que habíamos contratado nunca llegó a
nuestro punto de encuentro. Después de muchas llamadas por
teléfono y la ayuda de un oficial del aeropuerto, por fin nos
recogieron y nos llevaron a Lisses, un barrio de París.
Estábamos ansiosos por conocer a las familias con las que nos
íbamos a quedar. Como llegamos el domingo, tuvimos una
noche para empezar a conocer a nuestros “padres” y después
nos fuimos a dormir pronto.
Hubo una actividad diferente cada día. El primer día visitamos la Catedral de Notre Dame, caminamos
por Montmartre y nos montamos por primera vez en el metro.
Después, el martes, subimos todas las escaleras a la Torre Eiffel. La
vista lo merecía: ¡sorprendente! Ese día Mme. Dorien nos llevó a casa
temprano para evitar la aglomeración en los trenes. Luego fuimos al
centro comercial en Evry-Courcouronnes.
No puedes ir a París y no ver el Palacio de Versalles. Ahí, Luis XVI y
María Antonieta recobran vida. ¡Qué habitaciones más suntuosas y
qué mobiliario tan exquisito! Era extraño imaginar que vivían allí
justo antes de ser asesinados. Volvimos a París y pudimos descansar
las piernas a bordo de un barco a través del Sena. París es muy bonita,
¡hay tantos monumentos!
Madame Dorien había reservado mesa en un restaurante el jueves por
la noche, menos mal porque con la caminata abrimos apetito.
Visitamos el Museo de El Louvre y después caminamos por las
Tullerías hasta la Plaza de la Concordia. Allí nos montamos en un
motocarro por los Campos Elíseos, fuimos de compras y subimos al
Arco del Triunfo. ¡El soldado desconocido estaba descansando y
nosotros fatigados! Afortunadamente, cogimos el metro para ir al
restaurante. En el corazón de la plaza de los estudiantes, en una de las
partes más antiguas de París (el barrio latino) este encantador restaurante dejó satisfechos a todos los
paladares. Délicieux!
Y después… el ultimo día… ¡DISNEYLANDIA! ¡Divertidísimo! Hacía un tiempo buenísimo y teníamos
libertad para ir a dónde quisiéramos. Al final del día estábamos agotados. Cuando llegamos a casa,
cenamos y fuimos a dormir pronto porque a la mañana siguiente nos teníamos que levantar a las 3 de
la mañana. Dijimos adiós a nuestras “familias” y nos montamos en el autobús. ¡De nuevo, vino con
retraso! Esperamos 90 minutos, ¡¡¡que muy bien podríamos haberlos pasado durmiendo!!! Bueno, una
vez en el avión seguimos durmiendo y llegamos al aeropuerto de Málaga en casi nada de tiempo.
Nuestros “padres de verdad” estaban allí para recogernos. ¡Qué bien lo hemos pasado! Pero también es
agradable estar en casa.
Gracias a Mme. Sonia, Mme. Dorien, Miss Kate, Miss Anne y Mr. Jason, que nos cuidaron muy bien.
Estaban ahí cuando los necesitábamos e hicieron todo lo posible para que nos lo pasáramos muy bien.

Excursión a El Chorro
Día 1
En la entrada del colegio
El corazón me latía con tanta fuerza que pensé que me
iba a explotar. Bajé las escaleras del patio de recreo para
buscar a mis amigos; ellos estaban también muy, muy
nerviosos…
En el autobús
De pronto me vi a mí misma esperando a que el autobús
se pusiera en marcha. No me podía creer lo que estaba
sucediendo. ¡Había estado esperando este viaje todo el
año! Grité de nerviosismo (molestando a mi compañera).
Parecíamos
turistas de verdad visitando Barcelona y tomando un montón
de fotos.
El Chorro
Lo primero que hice cuando llegué a ese lugar tan
impresionante fue ponerme mi bikini nuevo (es monísimo).
Los profesores nos dividieron en grupos; yo estaba con Javi,
Nico, Paloma, Marcus, Alle, Viki, Miri, Karim y Alejandro (no
me acuerdo del resto). Después nos fuimos a nadar al lago y lo
pasamos muy bien; nos empezamos a empujar los unos a los
otros hacia el agua. Más tarde hicimos piragüismo. Yo estaba
con Neeva. ¡Fue guay! Don Daniel
nos dijo que nos pusiéramos la ropa porque nos íbamos a escalar rocas: muchos
de los alumnos estaban muy asustados...
Adiós lago
Nuestra última actividad fue tiro con arco, en la que Ayman demostró ser todo
un profesional. Cuando terminamos, caminamos dos kilómetros por el campo
(demasiado para Year 6), pasamos por una enorme y oscura cueva, y
empezamos a gritar porque los chicos nos estaban asustando.
Bungaló, dulce bungaló
¡Los bungalós eran geniales! Los profesores eligieron los grupos para las cabinas,
y el mío era fantástico: Laura, la desordenada; Beatriz, la guarda llaves; Lucía, la
dormilona; y Allegra, la ordenada.
Yincana jubilosa
Después me di cuenta de por qué habían hecho tantos grupos; eran para las
cabinas, para los juegos, para la yincana,... Decidimos crear un grupo “el Selfie”,
con Javi, Nico, Hector, Alle, Neeva y Pablo. La yincana consistía en un tipo de
búsqueda del tesoro en el que necesitábamos buscar pistas para encontrar las
respuestas escondidas en distintos lugares, y en nuestro grupo éramos: Nico,
Hector, Miriam, Sofia y Allegra. Y… adivina qué: ¡Quedamos en segundo lugar!
Por la noche, todos a dormir
Como ha sido un día muy largo, nos acurrucamos en nuestros sacos de dormir, cerramos los ojos y…
Zzzzzzz!

Excursión a El Chorro (Días 2 y 3)
Por la mañana temprano en nuestras cabinas y las actividades de la mañana
Me desperté de repente; Laura y Allegra ya estaban charlando y viendo la televisión. ¿Qué hora era?
Abrí la mochila de Lucía y cogí su reloj de One Direction. ¡Eran
las 03:45! Como estábamos muy nerviosas para dormir, no
molestamos a nadie y esperamos hasta las 08:00am para poder
salir a jugar. Aunque solo habíamos dormido dos horas,
salimos y nos lo pasamos muy bien con nuestros amigos. Nos
llamaron para desayunar; tomamos pan con mermelada y Cola
Cao – estaba muy bueno. Después, nos unimos a nuestros
equipos y nos dijeron que fuésemos a nuestras cabinas a
ponernos los bañadores: ¡Nos íbamos a la piscina! Después de
bañarnos, fuimos a hacer tirolina, disparo con rifle (¡Aksiniya
obtuvo la misma puntuación que el monitor!) y finalmente nos
fuimos a hacer karting; fue lo que más me gustó, aunque el
problema fue que estrellé mi coche contra un árbol … ¡un árbol
muy duro!
El almuerzo
Tomamos…. emmm…Ah, sí, ya me acuerdo; tomamos pasta, ensalada y pollo al curry. Estaba
DELICIOSO. Después de los desayunos, almuerzos y cenas, teníamos siempre un descanso por lo que
aprovechábamos para jugar al pilla pilla o tomábamos fotos.
Salpicar, salpicar
¡Hora de bañarse en la piscina! Después del descanso, nos tirábamos a la piscina como si nunca antes
hubiésemos visto el agua. ¡Fue impresionante! Muchas chicas tomaban el sol y los chicos… bueno,
molestaban a las chicas.
Fiesta
Empezamos a bailar; el monitor nos enseñó algunos bailes africanos. ¡Eran fantásticos! Nos lo pasamos
muy bien, pero estábamos tan cansados que la discoteca no
duró mucho.
¡Arriba, dormilones!
El último día nos despertamos a las 7 de la mañana. Fuimos a
desayunar, nos tomamos un descanso, hicimos las maletas y
por último nos montamos en el autobús.
Los flamencos
Después del viaje, fuimos a un bonito lago que nunca antes
había visto. Miré atentamente y pude observar a muchos
flamencos en la orilla. Tuvimos una visita muy interesante
por el lugar y después compramos regalos en la tienda.
Luego fuimos a la playa y jugamos a Los Juegos Olímpicos de Playa, a la carrera de sacos, tiro de cuerda
y también nos metimos en el mar que estaba helado y tenía muchas olas… ¡me encantó!
En casa de nuevo
Ahora estoy en el autobús de vuelta al colegio; ojalá todos los viajes sean tan divertidos como éste. Estoy
segura de que los niños de Year 5 querrán vivir la misma experiencia el próximo año.

Excursión a Sevilla Y7
La excursión a Sevilla de este año ha sido extremadamente divertida y
entretenida. Hemos hecho varias cosas: visitar famosos monumentos,
disfrutar de una excursión en barco por el Río Guadalquivir y, lo mejor
de todo, ir a Isla Mágica.
El primer día, estuvimos en el Parque de María Luisa y comimos allí.
Después, visitamos la Plaza de España y la Giralda. Finalmente,
llegamos al hotel y tuvimos tiempo para deshacer la maleta y disfrutar
de la piscina. Por la noche, cenamos en el buffet del hotel y vimos el partido de España contra Chile;
¡luchamos hasta el final!
Al día siguiente, nos levantamos muy temprano para disfrutar al máximo de nuestro día en Isla Mágica.
Desayunamos en el hotel y nos fuimos en autobús. Nos lo pasamos estupendamente; nos montamos en
muchas atracciones como el Jaguar y la Anaconda, comimos muy bien en el restaurante El Fuerte y
tomamos unos helados (gracias a Srta. Sandra). Volvimos al hotel a las 6:30. ¡Un día estupendo! El último
día, nos levantamos temprano, fuimos a desayunar y tuvimos que hacer las maletas. Después,
disfrutamos de una excursión en barco por el Río Guadalquivir; ¡fue genial! Finalmente, nos montamos en
el autobús de vuelta a Marbella. Paramos a comer bocadillos, huevos y fruta en el camino. Tomamos
helado, nos volvimos a montar en el autobús, y regresamos a casa. ¡Nos lo habíamos pasado genial en
estos últimos días! Todos los alumnos de Y7 les agradecen a todos los profesores que hayan ayudado a
organizar esta fantástica excursión y, en especial a Srta. Sandra, Mr. John, Miss Leslie y Miss Carly por
acompañarnos y cuidar de nosotros. Esperamos que organicen muchas más excursiones tan divertidas
como ésta. ¡Muchísimas gracias!
María Moro
¡Hola! Mi nombre es Francesca y tengo 20 años. Actualmente estoy estudiando en la Universidad de
Durham y soy ex-alumna de Swans. Llevo 3 años en el extranjero realizando una carrera universitaria en
lenguas modernas y no podría pensar en otro sitio donde me gustaría trabajar más que en Swans. Voy a
trabajar durante el mes de agosto en el colegio de verano y posteriormente trabajaré como asistente de
profesora en primaria, hasta finales de enero. Estoy buscando una familia con la que vivir, durante el
tiempo que voy a estar en Marbella.
Soy una persona limpia y ordenada, puedo cocinar, me considero cercana y agradable, y estoy
disponible para cuidar niños o para ayudarlos con las asignaturas del colegio. El pasado verano trabajé
como “Au pair” en Sevilla por lo que sé lo que pueden necesitar de mí, siendo un agrado unirme al
ambiente familiar y contribuir positivamente.
Si están interesados en acogerme en su hogar, por favor pónganse en contacto conmigo. Estaré en
Marbella a partir del 7 de julio y estaría encantada de poder conocerles y charlar al respecto.

Visita de Year 4 a la Granja Escuela Entrerríos
Los alumnos de Year 4 visitaron la Granja Escuela Entrerríos y lo pasaron
muy bien en esta excursión. Disfrutaron dando un paseo largo por el campo,
nadando, tirando con arco, escalando en roca, elaborando pan y plantando
hortalizas. ¡Sin embargo, el indudable punto culminante de la visita fue la
fiesta! Los niños se vistieron con su mejor ropa de fiesta y participaron en los
juegos, concursos y bailes. Los niños se comportaron impecablemente y
fueron un orgullo para nuestro colegio.

Graduación de Year 11
El penúltimo viernes del curso asistimos a la ceremonia anual de graduación de nuestros alumnos de
Year 11. La velada comenzó con un discurso de bienvenida, en inglés y en español, a cargo de la
directora Miss Catherine Davies. Se pronunciaron otros discursos en la ceremonia, uno de nuestro
orador invitado, Don Ricardo Tuzni, y otros de dos estudiantes, Ranya Leguel (en inglés) y César
González Prados (en español), que hablaron con gran seguridad y madurez. Otras secciones de la velada
incluyeron un interludio musical a cargo de Luca de Jonge y Sara Benkirane y una ingeniosa oda,

La entrega formal de las bandas corrió a cargo de las tutoras de Year 11, Miss Jo Henareh y Miss Hannah
O’Rourke, y después del tradicional movimiento de borlas de los birretes de graduación, nos dirigimos al
comedor para tomar unos refrescos y hacer muchas fotos. Nos sentimos muy felices de que muchos
alumnos vuelvan a Swans el próximo curso para comenzar sus estudios de Bachillerato Internacional.
Graduación de Year 13
Alumnos, padres y profesores se reunieron en una cálida tarde de mayo para celebrar la graduación de
los alumnos del Programa Diploma de Bachillerato Internacional de Swans 2014. La ceremonia comenzó
con un discurso de bienvenida a cargo de nuestra directora, Miss Catherine Davies, y el subdirector, Don
Miguel García. El orador invitado fue el padre de nuestro recién graduado Borja Dopico. Después le
siguieron discursos muy emotivos de nuestros delegados Anton Brink y Amelia Walton, y “Una oda a
Year 13”, un homenaje escrito cargado de anécdotas divertidas, compuesta por nuestro subdirector Rob
Maldonado. Después de las presentaciones formales de los certificados y la entrega de bandas a manos
de las tutoras, Miss Sarah Lundy y Miss Kay Asquith, la Clase de 2014 dio la vuelta a las borlas de sus
birretes y estalló el aplauso. La consiguiente cena en los hermosos alrededores del restaurante The
Courtyard Marbella, fue la forma perfecta de acabar una velada encantadora.
