- Mt 13, 2930

He replied, 'No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot
the wheat along with them. Let them grow together until
harvest; then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters,
"First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but
gather the wheat into my barn." ' " - Mt 13:29-30

“¿Puedes distinguir entre un santo y un
pecador?”
¿Puedes distinguir?
Pongamos atención a nuestro jardín, mantenerlo limpio y sano.

“Can you tell a saint from a sinner?”
Can you tell the difference? Reading the lives of the
Saints, a number of them moved from one category to
the other. Pulling weeds in our own garden = yes.
Pulling weeds in our parish, in our neighborhood, in
Congress or the White House, in other parts of the
world = no. That task belongs to God’s Spirit.
Saint Augustine applied this Sunday’s parable to
the church. We are certainly a “mixed bag” …there is good
and evil here too. Wouldn’t it be better off without the halfhearted and those who believe they are “more Catholic than
the Pope”? Appearances can be deceiving. A quite a few
“good plants” were pulled because someone thought that they
were ‘weeds’.
God wants the church to be holy, but the judgment of
souls also belongs to Him. As St. Paul reminds us, God is
“the one who searches hearts”. This is where we also return
to the First Reading from the Book of Wisdom …we might
all do well to return to this reading, and take it to heart…
“..your mastery over all things makes you lenient to all.” “…
those who are just must be kind.” Let’s all work on our own
gardens, keeping them clean and healthy; and our Church that
is a “mixed-bag?” …that includes us, and we are still growing, and we have also been wheat and weeds at different
times. Let’s try and be yeast, or a mustard seed!

GENEROSITY
The leftovers are at the end, it’s not what the people got after
Jesus and disciples ate. Overabundance is the effect of generosity, not its instrument. Do you need time to think about that last
sentence? It’s saying that generosity does not rely on having a
lot to give. It is not so generous to give when you have excess.
You can give from scarcity and amazingly and miraculously, the
effect is always overabundance. What merit or virtue is there in
giving from what is left over? How many times have we wondered if there will be enough food to feed all the folks who have
come to the table, and in the end there are always leftovers.
And, this is what we celebrate in the Eucharist: the abundance
of life that we receive in the Eucharist, the Body of Christ, is the
result of the generosity of the total surrender of Christ.
What you begin with is sufficient … generosity will multiply
it and give it life. It can begin with compassion, your company, a
smile, courage, a word of encouragement, giving time, and listening to others. This bread always multiplies in life.
