Dear visitors,
En representación de los habitantes de Viña del Mar y sus
autoridades, les doy la más cordial de las bienvenidas a esta
bella ciudad. Junto con darles las gracias por elegirnos como
sede para realizar su reunión, les deseo mucho éxito en los
resultados de su evento, y una encantadora estadía en nuestra
ciudad y alrededores.
On behalf of the citizens of Viña del Mar and local authorities, it
is a pleasure to welcome you to our beautiful city.
Desde hace muchos años, nos esforzamos por atender con el
máximo de profesionalismo las exigencias de ustedes,
delegados de reuniones y viajeros de incentivo que nos visitan.
Pero creemos que tanto o más importante que lo anterior, es
hacerles sentir nuestra tradicional calidez y entregarles toda la
información necesaria para que disfruten al máximo de nuestra
ciudad. Es éste el motivo por el cual hemos preparado esta

RECORDANDO NUESTRA HISTORIA
A Brief History
La historia de Viña del Mar se remonta a la época de la
llegada de los españoles a América, en el siglo XVI, cuando los
servicios bélicos de los soldados eran recompensados con la
entrega de encomiendas de indios o mercedes de tierras. Es
así como los capitanes Pedro Omepezoa y Diego García de
Villalón, reciben las tierras de lo que serían las futuras
haciendas La Viña de la Mar y Las Siete Hermanas.
The history of Viña del Mar can be traced back to the Spanish
arrival in America during the16th century, when soldiers were
given control over land and natives, for services rendered. This
is how two Spanish captains, Pedro Omepezoa and Diego
García Villalón, are granted the land that is later to become
the Haciendas “La Viña del Mar” and “Siete Hermanas” ( Seven
Sisters).
Su fundación como ciudad, sin embargo, se realiza 300 años
más tarde, en el siglo XIX, cuando en 1874, don José Francisco
Vergara Echevers, casado con una nieta de don Francisco
Alvares, acaudalado comerciante portugués que había
adquirido ambas haciendas en el año 1840, inicia el loteo de
los terrenos, dando comienzo a una próspera ciudad que se
transformaría, con el transcurso de los años, en la mayor
ciudad turística de Chile.
It is not until 300 years later that the town actually begins to
develop. In 1874, Mr José Francisco Vergara Echevers marries
the grandaughter of Mr Francisco Alvares, a wealthy
Portuguese merchant that had acquired both estates in 1840.
Mr Vergara begins to partition the land for development, giving
birth to what will later become Chile´s most important tourist
city.
Su ciudad contigua, Valparaíso, lleva el misterio en sus
orígenes, y aunque éstos también se remontan a cinco siglos
atrás, se dice que en realidad nunca fue formalmente
fundada. También la vecina ciudad de Concón, que significa
en lengua indígena “las muchas aguas”, denominada así por
la desembocadura del río Aconcagua que llega al mar en
estas tierras, registra sus primeros orígenes como el lugar donde
don Pedro de Valdivia, fundador de Santiago, instala un
astillero para la construcción del primer bergantín en Chile, con
el fin de transportar oro al viejo continente.
Viña del Mar’s adjoining city is the port of Valparaiso, a World
Heritage Site since 2003. Spanish sailors landed in Valparaiso
during the 16th century and the legend is that there is no
register of it being founded. North of Viña del Mar is the town of
Concón and its name means “many waters” as it is here that
the Aconcagua River meets the Pacific Ocean. This is where
Pedro de Valdivia who founded Santiago, our capital city, set
up a small shipyard to build the first Chilean brig whose purpose
was to transport gold back to Spain.

tradición cultural y fueron testigos de sucesos históricos
significativos en torno a la construcción social, económica y
política de nuestra nación.
Viña del Mar and its surrounding areas have rich cultural
traditions and have all played major roles in the shaping of the
country’s social, economic and political development.

Viña del Mar and its coastal route
El centro urbano de Viña del Mar está ordenado según la
orientación de los puntos cardinales, lo que facilita mucho
el desplazamiento para el visitante primerizo. Como en
toda urbe costera, le proponemos iniciar su recorrido desde
un punto ícono de nuestra ciudad: el Casino de Viña del
Mar, y de ahí hacia el borde costero y sus múltiples
atractivos...
Aventúrese a pie por la ciudad, camine desde el Casino, o
desde la Plaza Colombia contigua a éste, hasta la Avenida
Perú y observe la impresionante vista al mar con olas que
rompen en inmensas rocas, escenario frecuente para
fotógrafos y cineastas. Al final de la Avenida Perú, hacia el
norte, encontrará la popular Playa Acapulco, y la conexión
con Avenida San Martín, tradicional vía de la ciudad que
agrupa una importante cantidad de estupendos restoranes
y pubs, donde podrá degustar, en más de un lugar, de un
exquisito pisco sour chileno.
Una opción típica, y muy entretenida también, es hacer
este paseo en una “Victoria”, coches antiguos tirados por
caballos, que le transportarán a un esplendroso pasado
(acuerde precio previamente, entre US$30 y US$40).

The urban center of Viña del Mar is organized according to
the cardinal points, which makes getting around very easy,
even for a first time visitor. As in most coastal cities, we
suggest you start your tour from an easy focal point like the
Viña del Mar Casino and walk from there towards the
seaside or any other part of town.
You can set off from the Casino, or the plaza right next to it
(Plaza Colombia) towards Peru Avenue than runs parallel to
the sea. From here you can get impressive views of the
ocean and the waves breaking over the rocks on the
seafront, a favourite spot for photographers and film
makers. If you walk towards the north of this avenue you will
find the central and popular Acapulco Beach and you will
also intersect San Martín Avenue. Walking back along this
street you will find a large selection of restaurants and pubs,
and it will be good opportunity to taste a delicious Chilean
“pisco sour” and some excellent food.
A fun variation of this same route is to take a ride in a
“Victoria”, a horse-drawn carriage similar to those used in
the past and ride along the coast and through the city in
the old fashioned way (negotiate the price beforehand,
between 30 to 40 dollars).

Viña del Mar and its coastal route
Vuelva a la ruta costera en dirección al norte y llegue
hasta el Muelle Vergara, junto al Paseo San Martín. Allí
conozca sus pequeños kioscos de artesanía o
contemple el atardecer desde la Playa El Sol, donde
disfrutará también con los hermosos jardines de flores
de la zona. Cerca de este lugar, en 15 Norte con
Avenida Libertad, encontrará los principales centros
comerciales de la ciudad, que cuentan con una gran
variedad de comercio que atienden en horario
continuo.
Los puntos de interés atractivos continúan y, si quiere
recorrer completo el borde costero, le conviene tomar
un taxi colectivo o un bus en Avenida Libertad en
dirección a las playas de Reñaca, otro punto obligado
de su visita. Camino a este conocido balneario podrá
apreciar previamente el sector naval de la ciudad, la
Playa del Deporte, el Parque Costero y el Balneario
Las Salinas, donde podrá realizar caminatas, andar en
bicicleta, practicar jogging o, simplemente, podrá
relajarse disfrutando de la magnífica vista del Océano.
If you carry on north along San Martín Avenue, you will
reach the Vergara Pier and find a string of small kiosks
selling handicrafts along the way. You can watch the
sunset from the beach or stroll through the gardens on
the sea front. Only a few blocks away, on the intersection
of Av. Libertad and 15 Norte, you will find the city´s main
shopping district. Most shops in this area have extended
opening hours and do not shut at lunchtime.
If you want to continue along the coast, the route is part
of the Coastal Park all the way to Las Salinas Beach. This
is a favourite stretch for strolling, jogging, cycling or just
relaxing on the seafront and enjoying the magnificent
view. This is also where the Navy has some of its
academies.
If you don´t want to walk you can take a bus or taxicab
on Av. Libertad and get off at Las Salinas or a little
further, where you will find Reñaca beach, one of the
city´s most popular beaches during the summer season.
Finalice su ruta en Concón (a 12 km.), nominada como
la Capital Gastronómica de Chile, por sus excelentes y
típicos lugares para almorzar a orillas del mar. La ruta
tiene varios puntos atractivos donde detenerse para
ver artesanías en cobre y telares, contemplar el paisaje
desde el bello Mirador de Cochoa y avistar a los lobos
marinos.
From Reñaca, the coastal route will take you Concón (12
km.), an area that is now known as Chile´s Gastronomic
Capital. Here you will find a large selection of restaurants
and a variety of cuisines. The route not only has some
very beautiful scenery but also several attractive
viewpoints that should not be missed, particularly
Cochoa and its sea lions. You will also find copper
objects sold along the route.

Es un paseo típico que no puede perderse. A un
costado del Casino, frente a la Plaza México, cruce el
Puente Casino, sobre el Estero Marga-Marga y camine
por Avenida Marina en dirección al Castillo Wulff,
construcción estilo neo tudor que ya es una postal
clásica de nuestra ciudad y donde podrá visitar su
Salón de Exposiciones durante todo el año. Frente al
Castillo Wulff, en la parte alta del Cerro Castillo, verá el
Palacio Presidencial, residencia de descanso para los
mandatarios chilenos.
A los pies de este cerro, visite el Castillo Ross,
construido en 1912 por el destacado arquitecto
chileno Cruz Montt, y donde hoy funciona el Club
Unión Árabe con un restaurante abierto a todo
público. Diríjase después a Caleta Abarca a un
costado del Sheraton Miramar, y deténgase en el Reloj
de Flores, uno de los puntos más emblemáticos de
nuestra ciudad. Fue construido cuando la ciudad fue
sede del Mundial de Fútbol en el año 1962.
Ya en dirección a Valparaíso, le recomendamos que
aborde el Tren Merval en la Estación Miramar y disfrute
de un viaje muy bello por el borde costero que une
Viña del Mar con esta mítica ciudad, famosa por sus
leyendas. Llegue hasta la Plaza Sotomayor, estación
final del recorrido, y desde ahí pasee por el Muelle
Prat, recorra sus tiendas de souvenirs y, si el clima lo
permite, entusiásmese navegando por la Bahía.

This is a walk you should not miss. Start off from the Casino
towards the bridge. You will see the Plaza México on your
left. The bridge crosses the Marga-Marga river where you
then turn right on Marina Avenue towards the Wulff Castle, a
Neo-Tudor style building that is a classic postcard view of
our city. Here you will always be able to visit the gallery that
hosts exhibitions all year round.
Opposite the Wulff Castle on the hill facing the sea you will
see the Presidential Palace, a summer residence for Chile’s
presidents.
At the foot of the hill, you can visit the Ross Castle, built in
1912 by the prominent Chilean architect Cruz Montt. The
building is now the Arab Union Club and its restaurant is
open to the public. Continue walking towards Caleta
Abarca, the beach beside the Sheraton Hotel & Convention
Center and stop at the Flower Clock across the street, one
of the city´s distinctive attractions. The clock was built for the
1962 Football World Cup, when our city was one of the
venues.
If you want to continue your journey towards Valparaíso,
take the Merval Train at the Miramar Station and enjoy the
trip along the coast to the the legendary port of Valparaiso.
Get off at the last station, where you will find the Plaza
Sotomayor and take a walk towards the seafront and the
Prat Wharf, where you will find souvenirs and the chance to
take a boat ride in the bay, weather permitting.

Desde el Muelle Prat camine hacia la Plaza de la
Justicia, conocida por la leyenda de la peculiar
Estatua de los Tribunales. A continuación tome el
Ascenor El Peral e inicie un recorrido por los Cerros
Alegre y Concepción con sus calles empedradas, su
barrio de artistas, restaurantes y tiendas boutiques. Los
alrededores del Palacio Baburizza, el Museo Mirador
Lukas y el Café Turri, entre muchos otros, son clásicos a
la hora de conocer esta ciudad. A su regreso, bajando
por el Ascensor Concepción, camine por calle Serrano
hasta la Iglesia de La Matriz, barrio fundacional de la
ciudad. El Paseo 21 de Mayo, es otra visita muy
recomendada, donde también podrá llegar por un
pintoresco ascensor del mismo nombre a los pies del
Cerro Artillería, que le llevará a su hermoso mirador,
donde tendrá una visión única de la ciudad y podrá
también visitar el Museo Marítimo y Naval.
Para visitar la Casa Museo La Sebastiana del Poeta y
Premio Nóbel de Literatura Pablo Neruda, le
recomendamos tomar un taxi en paradero autorizado.
Para visitar la casa de Neruda en la localidad de Isla
Negra, distante a 60 minutos de Viña del Mar, se
recomienda contratar un tour en su hotel.

From the Prat Wharf walk across to the Courts of Justice
and find out the story behind the statue representing
Justice outside the court building. From there take the El
Peral cable car to begin your tour of the Cerro Alegre and
Cerro Concepción. As you leave the cable car you will
find the Baburizza Palace on your left. Walk along the
promenade and then up the hill to discover artist studios,
boutique shops, art galleries, restaurants and cafés and
some amazing views, as you carry on towards the Cerro
Concepción, where you will also find the Lukas Museum
and the Turri Café. From here you can take the
Concepción cable car to get you down the hill. Turn left
and walk to Serrano street, where you will find the La Matriz
Church, located where the first buildings of Valparaiso
were built. Continue towards the 21 de Mayo Promenade
by taking the cable car at the foot of the Cerro Artillería.
Enjoy the view from this privileged balcony above the port
and take some time to visit the Naval and Maritime
Museum.
To visit La Sebastiana, the house and museum that
belonged to Nobel Prize poet Pablo Neruda, we
recommend you take a taxi at a taxi stand. To go further
afield and visit his home by the sea at Isla Negra (1 hour
from Viña del Mar) we recommend you arrange a tour

La influencia europea en Chile dejó su impronta en Viña
del Mar, ciudad donde se combinan castillos, palacios y
parques inspirados en románticas construcciones.
European influence gave Viña del Mar its distinct atmosphere, and you
will find many buildings and parks that have been inspired in a romantic
architecture.
En el interior de la ciudad, después de cruzar la céntrica
Plaza José Francisco Vergara, hacia el sur, podrá ver la
Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, o “Parroquia
de Viña”, nombrada así en homenaje a Doña Dolores
Pérez, viuda de don Francisco Alvares, obra del
destacado arquitecto Emilio Jecquier, que alberga en su
interior hermosos vitrales germanos. Después camine
hasta la Quinta Vergara en calle Errázuriz, para conocer
este tradicional parque con árboles centenarios y visitar el
Palacio Vergara, actual edificio del Museo de Bellas Artes,
y el Anfiteatro donde se realiza cada verano el Festival
Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar (cerrado los
lunes).
In the center of the city, after crossing the José Francisco Vergara
Plaza, towards the south you will see the Parish Church Nuestra Señora
de los Dolores or “Viña Parish Church” named after Doña Dolores Pérez,
widow of Francisco Alvares. The church was built by the architect Emilio
Jecquier and has some beautiful german stained glass windows.
Continue towards the Quinta Vergara on Errázuriz street and visit this
traditional park, where you will also find the Museum of Fine Arts and the
Amphitheatre home to Viña del Mar´s International Music Festival that is
held here every summer (closed on Mondays).
De vuelta en la Plaza Vergara y cruzando el Puente
Libertad hacia el norte - pasado el Hotel O’Higgins camine por Avenida Libertad hasta el Palacio Carrasco,
ubicado entre 3 y 4 Norte, declarado Monumento
Histórico Nacional, donde actualmente funciona el Centro
Cultural y el Archivo Histórico Natural de Viña del Mar.
A sólo pasos de ahí podrá visitar y sorprenderse con el
Museo de Arqueología e Historia Natural Francisco Fonck
y su preciada colección de objetos prehispánicos y de Isla
de Pascua, incluyendo un Moai auténtico que le espera
en la entrada, y fósiles de una ballena de 25 millones de

Walk back to the Plaza and cross the Libertad bridge, past the
O’Higgins Hotel and you will find the Carrasco Palace, between 3 and 4
Norte streets. The building has been declared a Historic Monument and
it is now home to city’s Cultural Center and Historic Archive.
Only a few steps away you will find the Francisco Fonck Archaeology &
Natural History Museum with its valued collection of pre-hispanic
objects and Easter Island collection, including an authentic Moai on the
doorstep and 25 million year old whale fossils. Check the site

Desde el Museo Fonck diríjase hacia 3 Norte con calle
Quillota, y no deje de visitar el Museo Palacio Rioja, un museo
de época, en medio de un bello parque, que refleja el estilo
de vida de las antiguas familias acaudaladas.
From the Fonck Museum walk towards the intersection of 3
Norte and Quillota streets, where you will find the Rioja Palace,
an epoch Museum set in a park, a reminder of how wealthy
Viña families lived at the turn of the 19th Century.
Si lo suyo es la naturaleza, Viña del Mar lo seguirá
encantando. Ubicado a menos de 10 minutos del centro en
taxi o bus, lo espera el Jardín Botánico, un parque nacional
con más de 3.000 especies vegetales, iniciativa del fallecido
empresario salitrero y filántropo Don Pascual Baburizza.
Disfrute de un paseo inolvidable, caminando entre senderos,
viendo la laguna, sus aves y el bosque con aroma de
especies nativas, algunas extinguidas como el “Toromiro” de
Isla de Pascua; observe el palmar y el cactario, con su

If you are keen on nature, Viña del Mar has other interesting
places to visit. Only ten minutes from the center of town by
bus or taxi you will find the National Botanic Garden with over
3.000 species. The park was created by nitrate businessman
and philanthropist Mr. Pascual Baburizza. Enjoy walking
around the different paths, visit the lagoon, listen to the birds
and discover some very special native species, like the
“Toromiro” from Easter Island which is now extinct in the wild.
Don´t miss the Chilean palms near the lagoon or the
Cactarium with its collection of Chilean cactuses. You can

Otros puntos de interés en la ciudad son, la Laguna Sausalito

For the more adventurous, a trip to the La Campana National
Park (70 Kms. from Viña) is a fascinating and fun excursion.
The park, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve has over 8.000
hectares and a large diversity of species. Because of its size it
is advisable to visit with a guided tour. (You should always

and the best way to discover the ports´ nightlife is
by visiting some its traditional bars and pubs and

low area of town, there are many places worth

Libertad Avenue you will find three shopping
