Prescott Newsletter • A Literature and Writing Magnet Cluster School. 2009 Golden Apple Award Winner. • 2010 Winner of Area 6 DRIVE Teacher Award. • 2010 Winner of the Academic Improvement Award of the Illinois Honor Schools • Mr, Erin Roche Principal March 23, 2012 Amanda Maisch Assistant Principal Dear Prescott students and families, One of our roles-as both parents and teachers-is to create intellectually challenging learning for students. This includes teaching and developing important 21st Century skills such as generating questions, making observations, analyzing data, collaborating with a team and drawing conclusions based on evidence. Our 6-Sth grade students are currently immersed in a partnership with the Lincoln Park Zoo designed to develop these skills, while learning about animals and their behavior. Math and Science Teacher Ms. Brennan and the 6-Sth grade students are working closely with the Lincoln Park Zoo (LPZ) on a project called, "The Young Researchers Collaborative." Local School Council 2010-12 Jennifer Lister, Parent Representative LSC Chair Lisa SI. Marie, Parent Representative LSC Vice Chair Kimberly Gow, Teacher Representative LSC Secretary A few weeks ago, students visited the zoo to be trained by zoo staff on data collection techniques used in the field to study animal behavior. While at the zoo, students practiced their data collection skills by observing a variety of zoo animals. As part of this partnership, LPZ staff member Ms. Becky then visited the classroom to help students develop their own research questions, comparing the behavior of a zoo animal to the behavior of an urban animal that students see in their communities. Just this week, students returned to LPZ to observe their zoo animals and have now begun to analyze their data, looking for patterns that will illuminate answers to their research questions. It's just as real scientists do! Paul Carey, Parent Representative Claudia Marmolejo, Parent Representative Eric Marcus, Parent Representative The following • Which • Which • Which Veronica Vides, Parent Representative Amanda Kirshner, Teacher Representative are examples of some of our students' research questions: animal is more social, a squirrel or a dwarf mongoose? animal is more inactive, a pigeon or a vulture? animal spends more time feeding, a squirrel or a gorilla? On April 26th, 15-20 of our students will present their findings to LPZ scientists and other "Young Researchers" at the annual, "Lincoln Park Zoo Young Researchers Collaborative Science Celebration." Tracy Roemer, Community Representative Jeff Hlavacek, Community Representative At the April Ifl= Parent-Teacher Conferences, I encourage you to talk with your child(ren)'s teacher(s) about other intellectually challenging activities, projects, and discussions in which your daughter or son participates. During the Spring Intersession, you can help to deepen their 21 st Century skills by asking questions, reading, and talk about important topics that have many different interpretations and viewpoints. The new calendar will increase the number of full weeks in our school year, which will enhance our efforts to boost student achievement. By adding 30 percent more full weeks and 10 additional student attendance days, we also anticipate parents will be able to more easily plan their work and child-care schedules. Currently, nearly half of the Track R student calendar school weeks (18 of 38) have at least one day off, and more than 40 percent of the Track E student calendar is made up of partial weeks (16 of 38). By creating nine more full weeks for Track R schools and seven more full weeks for Track E schools, the new calendar will better serve the needs of students and families. Our goals are to provide greater continuity for student learning throughout the year and to ease the stress associated with haphazard scheduling the current calendar places on families. In developing this student-focused calendar, we worked with and sought feedback from our principals, the Full Day Advisory Committee and nearly 600 teachers throughout the District through the VIVA project. Full School Day Advisory Committee members, including parents, education experts, principals, elected officials and community and faith leaders, supported creating more full weeks of school, as well as, adding 10 student attendance days to the calendar to increase student learning time in the classroom. Principals and teachers supported the full-week schedule, as well as, strategically placed professional development days to ensure adequate time for teachers to plan for instruction and collaborate with one another. Changes to both Track R and Track E schools include: • 10 additional days of student attendance for a total of 180 days. • More full, five-day weeks, going from 20 to 29 weeks for Track R and from 22 to 29 weeks for Track E. Benefit: Provides less interruption to instruction and more consistency in scheduling for parents. • Reducing holidays from 10 to eight, changing Columbus and Pulaski Days from holidays to student attendance days. Benefit: Helps to accommodate the extra days without encroaching • Conversion of report card pick-up days to student attendance days. Students will now attend school on these days. Benefit: Helps to accommodate the extra days without encroaching on the into the summer break. summer break while also allowing parents the opportunity to meet with teachers and discuss their children's performance. Educate, Inspire, Transform Specific features of the Track E calendar include: • The school year will begin on Monday, Aug. 13,2012, and end on Monday, June 17, 2013.
