Deep down, almost every-one would like to have a greater abundance of material goods. And today, Jesus warns us of the danger of this. It is not shameful to be rich. The goods of the world are made to be used. We have the right to enjoy the fruit of our honest work and use it for the well-being of the family. What we are warned against is that wealth is not everything in life. If a person places all their trust in material possessions and wellbeing, the moment a difficulty or problem arises, it is as if the world had ended. In fact, we have heard of many suicides provoked by feelings of failure and the catastrophe of the global economic crisis. The same occurs when your raise children to think they deserve everything and spoil them without limits. The moment they faced their first frustration or failure, they may collapse or seek success in places where they will only find a sense of emptiness and violence, in other words, tragedy. And this is what Jesus warned us against. It is not that in cherishing wealth we will endure catastrophes or tragedies as a punishment from God, but that confiding excessively in them can lead to unhappiness and disgrace. We see this, after all, in many soap operas where greed or the trust in wealth and power as a goal in life, in the ends leads to the person’s self-destruction. Then what does God want from us? Perhaps a better order of our priorities and values; God wants to be at the center of our heart and not material things. He wants a vision and objectives focused on Him and not money or well being. He wants people, from all circumstances of life, poor or rich, successful or not, to see Him as the provider of all goods. For Reflection If I reviewed my life over the past week, what place has concern over material things occupied and what place has God held? Lenten Guidelines Abstinence: All persons who have completed their 14th year are bound by the law of abstinence. Fast: All adults are bound by the law of fast from the beginning of their 19th year up to the beginning of their 60th year. Explanation: The law of abstinence forbids the eating of meat and foods prepared with meat or meat-products. The law of fast allows only one full meal and two lighter meals in the course of a day, and prohibits eating between meals. In the United States, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence only. Exceptions: Women who are pregnant and persons who are sick are not bound by the law of fast. Please Pray For... Those suffering due to the weather in our country.
