Psalm — Go out to all the world and tell the Good News (Psalm 117). Second Reading — Be strong and endure your trials as the “discipline” of a loving God, for it will result in the peaceful fruit of righteousness (Hebrews 12:57, 11-13). Gospel — People from east and west, north and south, recline at table in the kingdom of God (Luke 13:22-30). Lectors/Lectores Remy Bravo Seay (English) Erika Guerrero (Español) Eucharistic Ministers Tita Brodt (English) Ruben Araujo ((Español) Jubilee Year of Mercy This Jubilee Year of Mercy and Pope Francis’ ministry have renewed our understanding that the Church’s heart is open wide to all, and the heart of the gospel is God’s mercy. Flooded with God’s mercy, our hearts should overflow as channels bringing to wounded and weary hearts Jesus’ healing mercy. For Jesus warns, our own salvation is not guaranteed by the Liturgy of the Word (“you taught in our streets”) nor by the Eucharist (“we ate and drank in your company”) (Luke 13:26). People far from that banquet, “from the east and the west and from the north and the south . . . will recline at table in the kingdom of God” (13:29). Rather, showing mercy is key to obtaining mercy ourselves (Matthew 5:7). So we should never dare ask what “someone” asked Jesus, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” (Luke 13:23). The crucial question is “Will I be saved?” And Jesus’ answer is another question: “Have you shown mercy to everyone, freely, gladly, no limits, no conditions, no exceptions?” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Today’s Mass Readings ar e on Page 1154 of the hard-bound Blue Book. Some very important questions we should all be asking ourselves at St. Joseph the Worker parish: • Do I withhold from giving back to God what is rightly due God? • Is my Sunday Financial offering, which is being presented to God as “my sacrificial gift” something that is truly sacrificial and thus pleasing to God? Or am I offering God scraps or my leftovers? • Is not my God and the support of my Catholic parish church where people are being spiritually fed, nourished, renewed, reconciled and being healed by God not worthy of 2 hours of my 40 hours worth of wages? ANNOUNCEMENTS St. Joseph the Worker $8,875 is the weekly amount needed in order to properly sustain, operate and improve our historic parish church of St. Joseph the Worker. Please prayerfully consider your Sunday gift offerings, as it is your personal sacrifice that is being presented to God. Last Sunday, August 14th, we received 30.5% of our weekly goal for the support of our parish church: 8:00am Mass: $906.00 9:30am Mass: $928.46 11:00am Spanish Mass: $880.07 ======================== Total $2,714.53 “Some are consumed with avarice all the day, but the just give unsparingly” (Proverbs 21:26) FROM THE PASTOR • Is 2 hours out of 40 hours or 5% of my weekly income really just too much to give back to God in gratitude for all the blessings I receive, especially when everything we receive from God is a gift in itself? New Parish Office Hours I am pleased to announce that Gloria Maldonado, our new office secretary is ready to welcome and assist our parishioners and visitors. Gloria is perfectly bilingual both in English and Spanish. Among her accomplishments, Gloria works with the Diocese of Oakland’s important “Rachel’s Vineyard” ministry which cares for women and men with post-abortion healing. St. Joseph the Worker Parish Office Hours are from Tuesday thru Friday 9:00am to 6:00pm (closed noon to 1:00pm for lunch). Please seriously and prayerfully reconsider your Sunday offerings, as it is your personal sacrifice that is being presented to God for the support and help of His Church. St. Joseph, pray for us. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
